April 15, 1936 ~ July 29, 2010

Pearl P. Palmer, age 74 a life long resident of Butler, Pennsylvania died Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 12:55 a.m. in the Sunnyview Home and Rehabilitation Center.

Born April 15, 1936 in Butler, Pennsylvania she was the daughter of the late Clarence Weitzel and Pearl Daniels Weitzel.

Mrs. Palmer was a Presbyterian by faith. She was care giver taking many people into her home. Mrs. Palmer enjoyed arts and crafts, music, bingo and camping.

Mrs. Palmer is survived by one son, Darrell Elliott and his wife Jeanie of Butler, Pennsylvania, two step grandchildren, Jared K. Kaib of Maryland and Shannon J. Kaib of Butler, Pennsylvania, one step great grandchild Amelia Kaib; two brothers, Darrell Weitzel and his wife Sandy of East Brady, Pennsylvania, and Sonny Weitzel and his wife Yvonne of Little Rock, Arkansas; one sister Nancy McDowell and her husband, William of Butler, Pennsylvania, nine nieces and nine nephews.

There will be no public visitation.

Private memorial services will be held.

Phylis Ellis Raisley

January 9, 1917 ~ July 24, 2010

Phylis Ellis Raisley Age 93 of St. John Specialty Care Center formerly of Butler passed away Saturday July 24, 2010 at 8:55 P.M.

Mrs. Raisley was born in Stratford, Ontario, Canada on January 9, 1917.

Phylis came to Butler as a young woman. She was employed by the Butler Eagle for several years, later she became a member of the clerical staff at BCC until her retirement. She was an active volunteer for many years and a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Bakerstown, Pennsylvania.

Surviving are three sons, David of Summerville, South Carolina, Mark of Prescott, Arizona, and Douglas of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania and also six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a sister in Canada.

She was marriage to Donald L. Raisley who died in 1965.

Friends and family of Phylis E. Raisley will be received at the THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME INC.124 EAST NORTH ST. BUTLER, A 16001 on Tuesday July 27, 2010 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.

Funeral services will follow at 8:00 P.M. with the Rev. Robert C. Huber of North Street Christian Church officiating.

In lieu of Flowers the family suggests memorials gifts to the Richland Center Library, 4015 Dickey Road, Gibsonia, Pennsylvania 15044.

Helen Maxine Ray

May 8, 1928 ~ July 14, 2010

Helen Maxine Ray, age 82 of Butler, Pennsylvania, formerly of East Butler, died July 14, 2010 at 9:35 a.m. at her residence.

Born May 8, 1928 in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Everett Whitmire and Dorothy Virginia Benton Whitmire.

Mrs. Ray was a member of North Main Street Church of God and a member of the Keenagers Sunday School class. She was a homemaker and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Ray was an accomplished seamstress. She was also a lifetime member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union of East Butler.

Mrs. Ray is survived by her husband George Ray whom she marriage on August 8, 1951, and also by two sons, Kevin and his wife Cheryl Ray of Butler, Pennsylvania, and Rodney and his wife Tracey Ray of Butler, Pennsylvania, two daughters, Patty and her husband Tom Thompson of Butler, Pennsylvania, and Kathy Burtner of Butler, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Travis Burtner, Todd Burtner, Tiffany Wilson, Tyler Ray, Kelsey Ray, Jacob Ray, and Danielle Hite, one brother, Donald Whitmire of Cross Lanes, West Virginia, one sister, Betty Peters of Butler, Pennsylvania, one sister-in law Inez Whitmire of Cross Lane, West Virginia and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ray was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela M. Ray, one grandchild, Dacia M. Ray, and one brother Glenn Whitmire.

Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Friday, July 16, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Dr. David West of Graceway Community Church officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park .

Mary Elizabeth McKinnis

July 23, 1916 ~ July 10, 2010

Mary Elizabeth McKinnis, 94, of Oertel Care Center (Concordia Ministries), Cabot, Pennsylvania, passed away July 10, 2010.

Mrs. McKinnis was born July 23, 1916 to the late William B. and Pearl E. Lindsey.

Mrs. McKinnis received her bachelors degree June 1934 from Slippery Rock State Teachers College and her masters from The University of Pittsburgh in 1935. She began her 36 year teaching career at Prospect, then moved to Butler High School where she taught Latin. Most of her career was spent teaching 4th grade at Summit Elementary School. Mrs. McKinnis retired from teaching in 1984. Mrs. McKinnis was a member of Bartramian Audubon Society, a former member of Sing Hosanna Cantata Choir, Poetry Club, Pennsylvania State Educators Association, and the Retired Teachers Club. She was an active member of Summit Presbyterian Church always helping and encouraging family and others. Mrs. McKinnis enjoyed music and traveling, including the Holy Land, Alaska, and Hawaii.

Mrs. McKinnis is survived by three sons, David L. of Butler, William W. of Butler, and John R. of North Washington; four grandchildren, Melissa, Jesse, Ann, and Libby; one great granddaughter, Amanda.

Mary was marriage on August 14, 1943 to the Russell C. McKinnis who passed away June 24, 1980. Mrs. McKinnis was also preceded in death by 1 brother and one niece.

Friends will be received at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home Inc. 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 from 7-9 p.m.

Private funeral service will be held. Interment will take place in Summit Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Summit Presbyterian Church, 181 Caldwell Drive, Butler, PA 16002 or Concordia Lutheran Ministries, 134 Marwood Road, Cabot, PA 16023.

Edward Hepe

January 15, 1923 ~ July 2, 2010

Edward Hepe, age 87 of Concordia at the Orchard formerly of Bartley Avenue, Butler, passed away Friday evening July 2, 2010 in the Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born in Bellaire, Ohio on January 15, 1923. He was the son of the late Edward Hepe and Dorothy Miller Hepe.

Mr. Hepe excelled at three sports during his days at Ohio's Bellaire High School, where he earned eight letters in football, baseball and track. Ed won four individual events at an Ohio District Meet in 1942, a feat that has not been equaled to date.

Ed became a combat-decorated World War II Veteran and after military service entered Slippery Rock State College as a 29 year old freshman, marriage with two young daughters.

As a football player, he set two single game records for Slippery Rock, a 90 yard touchdown return and 142 yards in punt returns. Playing sports and working a full time job on the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift at a strip mine, he earned his undergraduate degree in three years.

His reputation as a basketball official led to his first coaching job at McDonald High School in 1955 where he guided his team to a 99-22 record. In 1959, McDonald became part of the Fort Cherry High School merger and he became the school's basketball coach. He led his team to six consecutive section titles and was named Coach of the Year each of those seasons. His teams also won 65 straight Class B League Games.

The highlight of his coaching career came in 1961 as Fort Cherry won the WPIAL and PIAA Class B Basketball Championships, the first high school in Washington County to win a PIAA Basketball Championship.

Ed was also the first basketball coach in Washington County to be named Class B WPIAL and PIAA Coach-of-the-Year.

Ed's high school coaching career ended at Butler High School where he won several section titles. His overall record was 223-83 for an amazing winning percentage of .729.

As Athletic Director at Butler, he was instrumental in developing the Butler Track Invitational, building it from three to four teams to 25 to 35 teams. It has become one of the most prestigious track events in Western Pennsylvania.

Ed was inducted into the Butler Sports Hall of Fame in 1985, the Slippery Rock University Sports Hall of Fame in 1987, and in 2003 to the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame.

He was marriage to Mary Lape Hepe on June 12, 1942, she preceded him in death on November 25, 1998.

He is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Warren( Carolyn) of Hendrix of Champagne, Illinois and Mrs. John (Nancy) Daller of Murrysville, Pennsylvania, five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; one brother Jack Hepe of Burlingame, California, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by three brothers.

Friends and family of Edward Hepe will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler. Pennsylvania on Tuesday July 6, 2010 from 2-4 & 7-9 P.M.

Funeral services will be from the funeral home on Wednesday July 7, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Burial Estates, Mt. Chestnut, Pennsylvania.

Catherine M. Jack

June 6, 1929 ~ July 2, 2010

Catherine M. Jack, age 81 of Stonehouse Drive, Renfrew, Pennsylvania died Friday, July 2, 2010 at 1:15 a.m. in the Sugar Creek Rest in Worthington, Pennsylvania .

Born Thursday, June 6, 1929 in Butler Pennsylvania she was the daughter of the late Carl Cooper and Irene D. Ferne .

Mrs. Jack was a waitress in several Butler area restaurants including Roxy's Diner. She also had been employed at Zayre's Department store. She was a member of Covenant Life Church in Butler.

Mrs. Jack is survived by her husband, Walter M. Jack whom she marriage on February 6, 1960, two sons, Gerald Hughes and his wife Laurel of Mars, Pennsylvania and Eugene Jack of Florida; two daughters, Elaine McClure and her husband James of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Susan Beck and her husband Franklin of Connoquensessing, Pennsylvania; ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews; brother, David Fennell and his wife Nancy; three sisters, Dorothy Green and her husband James, Joyce Sasse and her husband Francis, Anna Curtis and her husband William all of Butler, Pennsylvania.

Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Dean Addams of Covenant Life Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Burial Estates.
