Paul R. Meier, age 79 of Butler, Pennsylvania, died Monday, July 5, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. at the Sugar Creek Rest in Worthington, Pennsylvania.
Born August 21, 1930 in Butler, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Frank A. Meier and Alma Brucker Meier.
Mr. Meier attended Oak Hills Christian Church. He worked as a state journeyman- tool and die maker. In his earlier years, he worked for Butler Stamping. Then he was the owner and operator of Meier Stamping Works in Butler. Mr. Meier was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the Butler City Hunting and Fishing Club.
Mr. Meier is survived by one brother, Ralph H. and his wife Sophie Meier of Butler, Pennsylvania, and one sister Alberta M. Hindman of North Washington, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Meier was preceded in death by his wife Delores Maxine Meier who passed away on April 2, 2003 and also by one sister and three brothers.
Friends of Paul R. Meier may attend a graveside service on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Summit Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Reverend Phillip Conyers, Jr. of Oak Hills Christian Church officiating. There is no visitation.

Melvin (Mel) A. Crotzer

Melvin (Mel) A. Crotzer, age 93, of Butler, Pennsylvania, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. in the Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born February 15, 1917 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Floyd Lincoln Crotzer and Lottie Heitzenrater Crotzer.
Mr. Crotzer graduated from Punxsutawney High School in 1935.. He worked in the tractor repair department at Butler Armco Steel retiring in 1979 after 43 years. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Crotzer enjoyed hunting, watching and listening to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a member of the Valencia United Methodist Church in Valencia, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Crotzer is survived by one son, Richard and his wife Ruth Crotzer of Butler, Pennsylvania, three daughters, Judith and her husband Stephen Pavlosky of Lenox, Massachusetts, Frances and her husband David Michael of Butler, Pennsylvania and Barbara Rikal of Butler, Pennsylvania, ten grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and one great great grandson.
Mr. Crotzer was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Jane (Fetterman) Crotzer who passed away April 5, 1996. Also proceeded in death by one brother and one sister.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Friday, July 9, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Services will be held at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home on Friday, July 9, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Bob Martin of Valencia United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Burial Estates.

Rose K. Hall

Rose K. Hall, age 81 of Butler, Pennsylvania, beloved mother, wife and friend passed away 10:00 p.m. on July 7, 2010 in the U.P.M.C. Presbyterian Hospital after a brief illness.
Born August 16, 1928 in Bellevue, Pennsylvania she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Kurtz and Gertrude Emsminger Kutz.
After graduating from Bellevue High School in 1946, she went to business school and then worked in New Castle, Pennsylvania where she met the love of her life, Dr. C. Kenneth Hall, who she marriage on June 23, 1956. While her children were small, she worked as a part-time teacher's aide at Center Avenue Elementary School and Clarence C. Brown Special School. As her children grew older, she took a full-time job at Domestic Relations of Butler County, where she worked for 17 years, retiring in 1993. When restlessness overtook her, she worked as a part-time receptionist for the office of Attorney Gwilym A. Price for several years before finally retiring for good. Despite having severe rheumatoid arthritis, she never lost her sense of humor. In her later years, she kept busy with various volunteer work. She was a member of the Family Selection Committee of Habitat for Humanity's Butler Chapter, a tutor for BC3's Adult Literacy Program; a 40-year member of the Meadowood Bridge Club; a volunteer morning caller for Concordia Telecargivers and an active member of the Hill United Presbyterian Church and the Joann Griffith Circle.
Mrs. Hall is survived by one daughter, Carole S. Hall of Butler, Pennsylvania, one son, Roger A. Hall of Chicora, Pennsylvania, one sister Elinor Phillippi of San Antonio, Texas and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. C. Kenneth Hall who passed away on October 15, 2004 and also by one sister, Margy Campbell .
The family will receive friends at the Thompson-Miller, Funeral Home, 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania 16001 on Monday, July 12, 2010 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorial services will be held at the Hill United Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Clark Sawyer of Hill United Presbyterian Church officiating.

Ida Marie Mozick, age 90 of Autumn Grove Care Center Harrisville, Pennsylvania, formerly of Franklin Street, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Friday, July 30, 2010 at 12:22 a.m. in the Autumn Grove Care Center .
Born June 21, 1920 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania she was the daughter of the late Christopher A. Kerner and Ida A. Brun Kerner.
Mrs. Mozick was a member of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church. She graduated from Westinghouse High School in 1940.
Mrs. Mozick is survived by one son, Donald Raymond and his wife Pamela Ann Mozick of Middleburg, Florida, two grandchildren, Christopher Mozick and Melissa Mozick Mulkey of Jacksonville, Florida; five great grandchildren; and one brother John Joseph Kerner of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania .
Mrs. Mozick was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Peters Cemetery.
E. Bertrum Shaffer

E. Bertrum Shaffer, age 95 of Butler, Pennsylvania, died July 30, 2010 at 9:55 a.m. in the The Visiting Nurses Association Inpatient Hospice in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Born December 29, 1914 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Edmund Shaffer and the late Eleanor Pastorius.
A 1938 graduate of Edinboro State College, with a major in Art Education, he later received his Master's degree in education, and certification in secondary school administration from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition he did graduate work at the University of Colorado, Carnegie Mellon University, and Pennsylvania State University.
He started his teaching career at Leetsdale, Pennsylvania in 1938 as an art instructor. His career in Education was interrupted when he entered the Armed Services in June, 1942. He served in the European Theater as a master sergeant, 319th Infantry, 80th Division, and was awarded a Bronze Star. In 1947, he came to the Butler Area School District, as an art instructor later to be named director of adult Education, followed by assistant principal for student affairs, and finally assistant principal for curriculum and supervision. In 1966, Mr. Shaffer was invited by Dr. James Lawson, the first president of Butler County Community College, to assist in establishing the college. During his tenure at the college as academic dean, he served as acting president on two occasions.
Mr. Shaffer retired from the college in 1976, having completed 36 1/2 years of service to education. He was subsequently honored by the designation "Professor Emeritus" and was presented with a plaque for his years of dedicated service to the Butler County Community College.
Mr. Shaffer was a member of the Covenant United Presbyterian Church of Butler, where he served many years as a Deacon and as an Elder.
Mr. Shaffer was also a member of Masonic Victory Lodge #694 F&AM, the New Castle Scottish Rite, and Syria Temple of Pittsburgh. He was a member of Delta Phi Delta, National Honorary Art Fraternity, and of Phi Delta Kappa, Nation Honorary Education Fraternity under whose auspices he and his wife had an opportunity to spend three weeks in Russia, visiting schools and universities. He was also a member of the NEA, the PSEA, the Butler County Chapter of Retired School Employees and a life member of the National Retired Teachers Association and of the Pennsylvania Retired School Employees.
Mr. Shaffer is survived by a number of nieces and nephews; and the many friends and caregivers who took care of him.
Mr. Shaffer was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie and his second wife, Esther J. Shaffer and who passed away February 5, 2003.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Sunday, August 1, 2010 from 1 to 2 p.m.
Services will be held at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home Inc on Sunday, August 1, 2040 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Dr. James E. Swanson of Covenant United Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow in North Side Cemetery.
Carmon Benford Newell, Jr.

Carmon Benford Newell, Jr, age 79 of Meridian Road Butler, Pennsylvania, died Monday, August 16, 2010 at 12:55 p.m. in the Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born March 14, 1931 in Portsmouth, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Carmon B. Newell, Sr. and Martha Bergman Newell.
Mr. Newell attended Franklin Jr. High School, Liberty High School and Penn State University, and later earned a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement and valor in action during his service as a Army sergeant during the Korean War. He marriage August 1954 and lived in Freemansburg for a time while working toward his master degree in labor economics at Lafayette College. In 1957, he moved his wife and their two small sons to Denville, New Jersey, where he worked as a staff representative in the Steelworker's Newark union office. Three years later, he was assigned to work as a district technician for the union in Pittsburgh and eventually took a position with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. He later became the chief mediator. He was a model railroad enthusiast and an enthusiastic racquetball player at the Butler Athletic Club. He was a avid gardener and was bestowed the honor of Kentucky Colonel.
Mr. Newell is survived by his wife, Joan Morrill Newell whom he marriage on August 7, 1954. Also survived by two sons, Todd Nelson Newell, Sr. of California, Maryland, and Timothy Carmon Newell of Wooster, Massachusetts, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three sisters, Judith Laska of Cleveland, Ohio, Mary Newell of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Patricia Barbash of State College, Pennsylvania and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be no public visitation or funeral service. Private Entombment will take place in the Chapel of Devotion Mausoleum in Butler County Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The Rainbow Animal Refuge, P.O. Box 145, Lyndora, PA 16045.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
