James William "Bill" McKay, age 93 of Butler, Pennsylvania, left a large hole in the lives of those who knew him when he passed away on September 19, 2010.
Born December 10, 1916 in Washington, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Rexford L. McKay and Margaret Minor McKay.
Dr. McKay was a 1938 graduate of Waynesburg College with Bachelor's Degrees in English and Latin. He earned his Master's Degree in Literature in 1948 and his Doctorate Degree in 1968, both from the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. McKay was a lifelong educator whose career spanned seven decades. His journey began as a teacher at Trinity High School in 1938. He left to serve with the U.S. Army in England, France, and Germany during World War II. After returning from the war, he taught at Slippery Rock High School, before becoming a Professor of English and Secondary Education at Slippery Rock University, a position he held from 1947 until 1982. He retired after 35 years at SRU, during which he was Department Chairperson of Secondary Education and named Teacher Laureate by his students. He was the first treasurer of the college credit union, which he was instrumental in organizing, and a charter member of the Pennsylvania Faculty Association, a forerunner of the Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties. Following his time at SRU, Dr. McKay found retirement unsatisfying; he refused to not teach, and the following year he joined the faculty of Butler County Community College, where he taught until 1991.
Aside from teaching, Dr. McKay loved his family, friends, traveling, and playing and watching sports. He was the oldest living member of St. Andrews United Presbyterian Church in Butler, where he served as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, and liturgist.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Mary Agnes Good McKay, whom he marriage on March 21, 1970; his two sons, Timothy McKay of Mosely, Virginia, and Jonathan McKay and his wife Natalie of Butler; two daughters, Maureen Stephen of Belle Vernon, and Susan Ostapchenko and her husband Mike of McKees Rocks; two daughters-in-law, Diana McKay of Pittsburgh, and Angela McKay of Rice, Virginia; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Dr. McKay was preceded in death by a son, James William McKay III; a sister, Sarah McKay Wright; and a son-in-law, Scott Stephen.
Friends will be received at the Memorial Room at Saint Andrews United Presbyterian Church, 201 East Jefferson Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, September 21, 2010 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday, September 22, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the St. Andrews United Presbyterian Church, 201 East Jefferson Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Thursday, September 23, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Merry H. Meloy officiating. Private interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Claridge, Pennsylvania.

Audrey M. Kirsopp

Audrey M. Kirsopp, age 86 of Kissimmee, Florida formerly of Prospect, Pennsylvania, died Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 6:50 p.m. in the Palms at Park Place in Kissimmee, Florida.
Born September 6, 1924 in Stowe Township, McKees Rocks she was the daughter of the late Cochran Lewis Kreps and Isabel Mae (Perret) Kreps.
Mrs. Kirsopp was a member of Community Alliance Church in Butler. She worked as a secretary-bookkeeper at Neville Chemical Company and Kirsopp Body Shop for 25 years, retiring September 1986. Mrs. Kirsopp enjoyed reading, traveling, and playing the organ.
Mrs. Kirsopp is survived by one son, John Leroy and his wife, Gale Theresa Kirsopp, Jr. of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania; one daughter, Nancy Lynn and her husband Donald L. Coulombe of Prospect, Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, Richard C. Adams, Jr., Melissa J. Adams, Michael J. Kirsopp, Lori M. Kirsopp, Jeremy Coulmobe, Jayme Coulombe; four great-grandchildren, Nathan, Jacob, Zackary, and Kaden; eight nieces, and ten nephews.
Mrs. Kirsopp was preceded in death by her husband, John Leroy Kirsopp whom she marriage on November 16, 1943 and passed away on February 1, 1988 and also by one daughter, Carol Ann Adams, one sister and three brothers.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Friday, September 24, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Dennis L. Krajacic of Community Alliance Church officiating. Interment will follow in Jefferson Memorial Park.
Stella M. Warren

Stella M. Warren, age 82 of South Sixth Avenue died suddenly in the emergency room of Butler Memorial Hospital at 4:05 p.m. Saturday, September 18, 2010.
Born July 7, 1928 in Butler, Pennsylvania she was the last surviving family member of the late Joseph J and Mary (Chuba) Kuciak.
She retired in 1991 from the Butler School District's Food Service Department.
Stella is survived by a son, Jack Warren, Jr. and his companion, Mary Stauffer, both of Chicora; two daughters, both of Butler, Mrs. Paula Barto and her husband Douglas and Mrs. Kathleen Prementine and her husband Robert, six grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Stella was preceded in death by her husband, Jack C. Warren, Sr. who died November 20, 2007; six brothers and two sisters.
Private visitation and services were held at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.

Gladys M. Nelson Williamson Andres

Gladys M. Nelson Williamson Andres, age 84 of Butler, beloved wife, mother, sister and friend died Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 11:40 a.m. in the Good Samaritan Hospice at Concordia.
She worked for Penney's for 13 years and then at PARC as a supervisor for 20 years. She was a member of North Main Street of God where she also taught Sunday School. She volunteered with Meals-On-Wheels. She generously gave to many, often anonymously, and was loved for her great sense of humor. Her family was her life.
She will be missed by her husband, John Andres, her daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Dennis Slamon, Kay and Matt Warheit, Jymie and Ike Kelly, and her step-family, Ken and Lynn Andres and Rosemarie Hancock. She will also be missed by her sister, Marian Tritsch and brother, Jimmy Nelson, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was grandma and great-grandma to twelve children who dearly loved her.

Marcella Z. Patterson, age 96, of Concordia Lutheran Ministries, Cabot, Pennsylvania, formerly of Penn Township, died Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Hospice Unit at Concordia.
Born April 19, 1914 in West Monterey, Pennsylvania she was the daughter of the late John Overheim and the late Ora Buzard Overheim.
Mrs. Patterson was a homemaker and a member of North Street Christian Church, Butler, Pennsylvania. She was also a former member of the Penn Township Women's Club.
Mrs. Patterson is survived by one son, Donald M. and his wife Mary Ann Patterson of Butler, Pennsylvania; one daughter, Ruth Ann and her husband Richard Horam of Cut & Shoot, Texas; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Patterson was preceeded in death by her husband, John R. Patterson, who passed away on June 21, 1997, one grandson and two sisters and one brother.

Gladys Elba Blain

Gladys Elba Blain of Butler, Pennsylvania, was 90 years old when she entered Gods loving hands on Sunday, September 5, 2010 at 12:34 p.m. at Good Samaritan Hospice Unit at Concordia.
She lived in Butler, Pennsylvania her entire life. Mrs. Blain was born on December 15, 1919 to the late Fredrick William Holfman and Elba Luther Holfman.
Gladys was a well-known agent for National Grange Insurance. She also worked for many years making food on the fair circuit for Ernie Taylor's Chicken Bar-B-Que.
Gladys enjoyed entertaining friends, playing cards, traveling, and spending time with her family. Mrs. Blain loved supporting her grandchildren in their music and drama activities.
Gladys was a lifelong member of the Jefferson Grange #1373 and National Grange. Mrs. Blain was awarded Granger of the Year, and served as State Deputy with her husband, John. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of America, and also attended Graceway Community Church.
Mrs. Blain is survived by her daughter, Roberta "Bobbie" Taylor and her husband Ernest Taylor; five grandchildren, Amy (Patrick) Parker, Beth (Michael) Ackelson, Holly (Darrin) Mead, Shawn Taylor and Jenny Taylor. She will be greatly missed by her nine great grandchildren, Cozette, Stetson, Mackenzie, and Rosie Mead, Lyric, Brendan, and Trevor Ackelson, Andre Parker and Olivia Taylor; two sister-in-laws, Mrs. Velma Blain of Butler and Mrs. Mary Holfman of East Butler, Pennsylvania; lifelong friends, Della Jones, Mabel Bartmas, Sarah Braden, Albert (Nettie) Martsolf, and Rick (Ev) Gallagher.
She was preceded in death by her husband John Milton Blain on May 27, 1958; her parents, and two brothers Ralph and Fredrick Holfman.

Bernice Margaret Gross
June 6, 1926 - September 4, 2010
Bernice Margaret Gross, age 84, of Ontario, Ohio, formerly of Country Club Road in Butler, Pennsylvania, passed away on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 11:30 p.m. at her daughter's home, where she had resided for the last nine years.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 6, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Benedict Wilhem Miller and Margaret Ruth Heckler Miller.
Mrs. Gross was a graduate of Crafton High School. She was a homemaker and a member of Nixon United Methodist Church. When she was living in Butler, she was very active in many activities at her church.
Mrs. Gross was marriage to Jacob C. Gross on September 1, 1948 and he preceded her in death on June 26, 1989.
Bernice is survived by one daughter, Debra Cornell and her husband, Terry, of Ontario, Ohio; one grandson, Cory Grist also of Ontario, Ohio; one sister, Beatrice Matthews of London, Ohio; and by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Donald M. Miller and one sister, Louise Hughes.

Hall, former pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will be in the Brownsdale Cemetery, Penn Township, Pennsylvania.

Philip Robert Nast, MD

Philip Robert Nast, MD, known to his family and friends as "Bob", succumbed to a cardiac arrest at his residence in Ripon, CA on September 1, 2010.
Born to the late Sigmund and Bessie (nee Braude) Nast, he was also a nephew to the late Dr. Max Nast of Butler, Pennsylvania.
He graduated from Butler High School in 1946. He graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in 1950 with honors including the Chi Epsilon Mu Chemistry Award, Phi Beta Kappa Award, and the Pi Lambda Phi Honor Society.
Dr. Nast graduated from Cornell Medical School in 1954, and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. He completed a one-year internship with Bryn Mawr Hospital and then he was drafted into the US Army in 1955 as a Captain. He served in active duty for two years until 1957, but remained in the US Army Reserves until 1963.
After completing his residency in Internal Medicine at Bryn Mawr Hospital in 1960, and his residency in Gastroenterology at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1963, and then he went into private practice at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
Dr. Nast founded Bryn Mawr Medical Specialists Association in 1969. Known for his intelligent wit, sense of humor, and excellent bedside manner, he served his patients, his community, and the Bryn Mawr Hospital until he retired in 1999.
Dr. Nast is survived by his three children, Sheryl Metcalf Blankers and her husband, Bruce, and Jennifer Nast, and David Nast; three grandchildren, Michael, Matthew and Daniel Metcalf; his former spouse, Diane, two nieces and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Faye Meyers.
Graveside services will be held on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the B'nai Abraham Cemetery in Butler, Pennsylvania.
A memorial service will be held in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. This will be determined at a later date.
