C. Edward Maphis, 92, of 111 South Cliff St., died at 1:46 p.m. Thursday at his residence.
Born May 17, 1909, in Girard, Ohio, he was the son of Charles Edward and Blanche Smith Maphis.
A 1927 graduate of Girard High School, Mr. Maphis was an inspector for the Navy at Dravosburg during World War II.
Mr. Maphis was employed as a welder at Butler Armco, now AK Steel, until his retirement on May 31, 1974.
He was a member of the Victory Lodge F & AM, No. 694 for more than 50 years. He also was a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of New Castle and of the Syria Temple of Pittsburgh.
Mr. Maphis was a member of Summit United Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by two sons, John E. Maphis of Brook Park, Ohio, and Charles Edward Maphis, Jr. of Painesville, Ohio. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
His wife, Esther Lucille Huppe Maphis, who died July 4, 1996, preceded Mr. Maphis in death.

The officers and members of Victory Lodge F & AM No. 694 will conduct memorial services at the funeral home at 6:45 p.m. Sunday.
David R. White
David R. White, 81, of Oakland Township died at 1:50 a.m. today at the Butler Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Born May 15, 1920, in Knox, he was the son of Basil and Pearl Lapsley White.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II.
He was retired from the former Pullman-Standard Co.
He is survived by a daughter, Patricia White of Butler; two sons, David White and Howard White, both of Butler; two sisters, Pearl Best and Sheba McCall, both of Knox; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Hottel White, who died Oct. 5, 1994. Also preceding him in death were two brothers.

Rev. Howard Weyand
The Rev. Howard Weyand, 77, of 409 S. Main St., Harrisville, died at 3:50 p.m. Sunday at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born March 22, 1924, in Jersey City, N.J., he was a son of George and Margaret Vandermark Weyand.
Rev. Weyand was a missionary with the Evangelical Baptist Missions, where he worked with his wife, Betty, for 39 years in Martinique, West Indies. They also did missionary work in France.
He started his missionary work with the American Mission for Opening and Closing of Churches in Folsomdale, N.Y., for three years, starting in 1950.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Grove City.
He was a graduate of Valley Central High School in Utica, N.Y., the Utica School of Commerce, and Moody Bible Institute of Chicago.
He is survived by his wife, whom he married Aug. 30, 1946.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Timothy (Holly) Sutton of Middleburg, N.Y., and Heather Harper of Pensacola, Fla.; a son, Bradley Weyand of Newman, Ga.; three sisters: Katherine Treible of Greencastle, Ind.; Barbara Kucza of Danbury, Conn.; and Joan Bush of Matamoras, Pa.; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Florence L. Weber
Florence L. Weber, 85, of Cranberry Township, formerly of Baden, died Sunday at St. Francis Nursing Center North, Cranberry Township.
Born Aug, 1, 1915, in Sewickley, she was the daughter of Harry and Helen Lulkovitz Shivley.
She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Baden.
Surviving are five sons, Dale Weber of Sewickley, Dave Weber of Houston, Texas, Jack Weber of Zelienople and W. Arthur and Jamie Weber, both of Cranberry Township; and a daughter, Nancy Louise Kumpf of Sewickley. Also surviving are a sister, Betty Ankowski of Harmony Township, Beaver County; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo D. Weber, who died in 1964; a brother; and a sister.
WEBER - Friends of Florence L. Weber, who died Sunday, May 20, 2001, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at JOHN SYKA FUNERAL HOME, 833 Kennedy Drive, Ambridge. A service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Catholic Church, Baden. The Rev. Mauro Camels, pastor of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church of Ellwood City, and the Rev. Joseph Dascenzo, church pastor, officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery , Freedom, Beaver County.
A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mary L. Snyder
Mary L. Snyder, 88, of Glenford Drive, Chicora, and formerly of Petrolia, died at 1:15 a.m. Sunday at the Chicora Medical Center following a lingering illness.
Born Aug. 13, 1912, in Bradys Bend Township, Armstrong County, she was the daughter of Michel and Mary Bernard Zeitler.
She was a member of the Karns City United Methodist Church and a graduate of Midland High School.
She had worked as a waitress at the Narrows Restaurant near East Brady, and at the East Brady Woolen Hill.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Mary Kathryn) Shakley of Chicora and Mrs. Charles (JoAnn Louise) Wigton Jr. of Florissant, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Snyder, who died Sept. 25, 1979, and whom she married Oct. 12, 1935.
Two daughters, two brothers and six sisters also preceded her in death.

Joseph Robert Scott Jr.
Joseph Robert Scott Jr., 47, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Zelienople, died Thursday at Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas.
He was born June 4, 1953.
Mr. Scott was a broker/salesman/property manager for Century 21 Advantage Gold in Las Vegas.
He is survived by a son, Nathan Scott of Las Vegas; his mother, Lillian E. Rainy Scott of Mars; a sister, Mrs. Bruce (Linda) Beckey of Zelienople; and two nieces.
His father, Joseph R. Scott Sr., preceded him in death.

Robert J. Sauers
Robert J. Sauers, 79, of Mars died Sunday at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Born Feb. 8, 1922, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of George and Theresa Betzold Sauers.
He was a retired chemical worker for Mine Safety and Appliance Co. in Callery. He also was a freelance photographer.
He was a member and Eucharistic Minister at St. Kilian Roman Catholic Church in Mars.
He is survived by his wife, June Gensimore Sauers, whom he married May 30, 1944; a daughter, Patricia Sauers of Pittsburgh; three sons: Robert Sauers Jr. of Gibsonia, and Joseph and William Sauers, both of Cranberry Township; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son and three brothers.

Paul Payung, landscape service owner
Paul Payung, 95, of Meridian died Sunday at his home after an illness.
Born Dec. 6, 1905, in Breslau, Germany, he was the son of Friedrich and Ida Kuemmel Pajung.
He owned and operated Payung’s Landscape Service and Nursery in Meridian from 1943 until his death and specialized in landscape design, rock gardens and bonsai trees.
While in Germany, his neighbor and best friend was Baron von Richthofen, better known as the Red Baron, the World War I flying ace.
He helped his parents on their horse farm, where they raised horses for Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany. When Czar Nicholas Romanov visited Breslau, Czarina Alexandra visited the farm, and Payung spent the day visiting with the czarina and playing with her children.
He attended two years of the Lutheran seminary while in Germany.
At 21, he emigrated to the United States. He lived with his aunt and uncle in New Jersey and worked for the Campbell Soup Co.
He attended the Wanamaker Institute for English and then attended Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, where he earned a degree in landscape architecture and design.
In 1928, he earned his wings and received his pilot license from the American School of Aviation in Chicago and built his own airplane.
He also had the honor of standing next to first lady Eleanor Roosevelt at the christening of the USS Saratoga; and while living in Philadelphia, he was the head landscaper for the Strauss family estate.
Mr. Payung moved to Western Pennsylvania in 1935, and was the general manager at Freelands Nursery in Bakerstown and assisted in the design of Point State Park and its fountain in Pittsburgh.
He was active in the Boy Scouts and was leader of Pack 19, Troop 19 and Explorer Post 19 in Meridian. He received the Boy Scout Distinguished Service Award and was a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. He also was a registered member of the Girl Scouts and assisted his wife with Girl Scout activities.
He was a life member of the Meridian Volunteer Fire Company.
He was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church of Meridian, formerly St. Conrad Church, where he served on the church council. He also was a member of the St. Conrad Holy Name Society, a longtime member of St. Conrad Church Choir and had taught First Communion for years. He also decorated the church’s altar for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
He was a former member of the Butler High Band Parents and a member of the Western Pennsylvania Rock Garden Society.
Surviving are a son, Gordon L. Payung of Meridian; a daughter, Mrs. Norman (Trena Ann) Henthorn of Connoquenessing; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Also surviving are cousins, nephews and grandnephews in Germany.
His wife, Helen Schnur Payung, a native of Herman, whom he married June 23, 1934, at St. Mary Church in Herman, died March 25,1991. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister, and a great-grandson.
PAYUNG - Friends of Paul Payung, who died Sunday, May 20, 2001, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME, 201 E. Cunningham St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church, Meridian. Entombment will be at Calvary Mausoleum.

Nicholas R. Whoolery Sr.
Nicholas R. Whoolery Sr., 77, of Pinellas Park, Fla., died Friday, May 11, 2001, at his son’s home in Azle, Texas, after a long illness.
He was born in Allenport, Washington County.
Mr. Whoolery moved to Pinellas Park from Dublin, Ga., in 1966 and retired as an administrative assistant at the Bay Pines Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Florida. Following his retirement, he was a night auditor for LaQuinta Inns in St. Petersburg. Fla.
He was a member of the Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Gulfport, Fla.
He served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Whoolery; four sons, Nicholas R. Whoolery Jr. of Cave Junction, Ore., Ronald L, Whoolery of Catawba, S.C., Wendel J. Whoolery of Pinellas Park, Fla., and William J. Whoolery of Azle; and two daughters, Colleen F. Halderman of Henderson, N.C., and Jean M. Marshall of Homestead, Fla. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
