Anna L. Mortimer, age 97 of Lowie House, Butler, Pennsylvania, formerly of South Trail and the Arbor Apartments, died Friday, February 29, 2008 at 6:10 p.m. in the Lowrie House.
Born January 1, 1911 in Brady's Bend, Pennsylvania she was the daughter of the late Michael DeCorte and the late Lucy Wolcott.
Mrs. Mortimer was a homemaker and catholic by faith.
Mrs. Mortimer is survived by one son, Howard J. Mortimer of Cabot, Pennsylvania; one daughter, Mrs. Converse (Mildred) Branscome of New Castle, Pennsylvania; seven granddaughters, fourteen great-grandchildren, and by a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Mortimer was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Francis Mortimer who passed away on November 30, 1994 and also by five sisters and eight brothers.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Thursday, March 6, 2008 from 9 to 11 a.m.
A Blessing service will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Brady's Bend.
Rachel E. Pierce
July 8, 1917 - February 29, 2008
Rachel Elizabeth Pierce, age 90, formerly of Brownsdale Road, Butler, died Friday, February 29, 2008 at 10:20 a.m. in the Sunnyview Home.
Born July 8, 1917 in Banks Township, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Walter L. and Jennie Spiece Pierce.
Miss Pierce worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for Butler School District and for the Presbytery in Pittsburgh. She was a member of the Hill United Presbyterian Church She was a member of the Willing Workers and of the Tuesday AM Bible Study at her church. Miss Pierce was a member of the Business and Professional Women and of the Circle of Presbyterian Women. Her other interests were furthering her religion, reading, making plastic canvas crafts and knitting bandages for her church charities. She was a missionary to Egypt for the Presbyterian Church.
Miss Pierce is survived by by four nieces, Judith Tyson of Butler, Pennsylvania, Carol Eichenlaub of Cabot, Pennsylvania, Sarah (Sally) Weir of Canfield, Ohio, and Janice Metkin of Couer d'Alene, Idaho; one nephew, James Keasey of Zelienople, Pennsylvania; and seven great-nieces, one great-nephew, two great-great-nephews, and by one great-great-niece.
One sister, Kathryn Keasey, preceded Miss Pierce in death.
There will be no visitation.
Memorial services will be held at the Hill United Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend John Porter, her church's pastor, officiating.

Clair R. Hinkle
June 25, 1921 - February 29, 2008
Clair R. Hinkle, age 86 formerly of Spruce Street, Butler, Pennsylvania, died Friday, February 29, 2008 at 2:49 a.m. in the Arbors at Delaware, Delaware, Ohio.
Born Saturday, June 25, 1921 in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Leonard Hinkle and the late Etta Daniels Hinkle.
Mr. Hinkle was a member of Hill United Presbyterian Church. He was a furnace tender for Butler Armco for 37 years. Mr. Hinkle was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II and a member of V.F.W. Post # 249.
Mr. Hinkle is survived by three sons, Thomas Hinkle of Delaware, Ohio, Ronald Hinkle, and Joseph Hinkle both of Albuquerque, New Mexico; by seven grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Davis of Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Dorothy Schmidt of West Middlesex, Pennsylvania and by a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hinkle was marriage to Armida Tosi on August 24, 1942 and she preceded him in death on November 30, 1990. In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by four brothers.
Private funeral services will be held. Interment will be in Greenlawn Burial Estates.

Evelyn M. Elwood
October 26, 1915 - February 28, 2008
Evelyn M. Elwood, a long-time resident of Charles Drive in Butler Township, died Thursday, February 28, 2008 at 4:55 a.m. at Baptist Homes in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she had been under care following a partially paralyzing stroke in May, 2007.
Born October 26, 1915 as Evelyn Marguerite Lehner and a native of East Brady, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Elwood was a pioneer in opening commercial food sales positions in Pittsburgh to women and rose to become "Miss Town Talk" and supervise Braun Baking Company's bread division's regional marketing staff and product demonstrations.
Following her marriage to Glenn E. Elwood of Apollo, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Elwood relocated to New Jersey and became a homemaker and community volunteer, serving, among other positions, as a member of the Ewing Township Board of Zoning Appeals.
Upon settling in Butler in 1955, Mrs. Elwood became active in Trinity Presbyterian Church where she was elected to the Board of Deacons and also served as a member of the Building Committee.
An avid bridge player and competitor, Mrs. Elwood was also an accomplished seamstress and needle worker and enjoyed cooking, travel, theatre and concerts.
Mrs. Elwood is survived by a son, William E. Elwood of Alexandria, Virginia; a daughter, Betty Elwood Roessler of Crafton, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and eight nieces and nephews.
Friends and family will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Friday, March 7, 2008 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Private services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc. with Reverend Jeff Harris of Trinity Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.

Kenneth M. Walker
March 1, 1931 - February 18, 2008
Kenneth M. Walker, age 76 of Renfrew, Pennsylvania, died Monday, February 18, 2008 at 1:24 p.m. in the Good Samaritan Hospice at Concordia.
Born March 1, 1931 in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Delphin Walker and the late Mary Weaver Walker.
Mr. Walker was a retired coal miner for Bethlehem Steel with Union Local 4963. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in Korean War. Mr. Walker was also a member of the United Mine Workers Association, a member of the Happy Hunters Club and was an avid gardener and sportsman.
Mr. Walker is survived by his daughter and her husband, Lisa Clark and Sam Snyder of Butler, Pennsylvania; granddaughter, Brittany Rose Clark; step-daughter, Beth Ann Deless of Butler, Pennsylvania; step-grandsons, Chad and Shane Snyder; brother, Wilbur Alfred Walker of Ohio; two sisters, Ruby Libscomb of Butler, Pennsylvania, and Della Curzi of Butler, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Walker was preceded in death by one sister, one brother and two infant brothers.
There will be no public visitation and services. Arrangements are being handled by Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania.

James "Jim" Johnston
June 15, 1923 - February 18, 2008
James "Jim" Howard Johnston, age 84 of White Oak Drive, Renfrew, Pennsylvania, died Monday, February 18, 2008 at 2:40 a.m. in the St. John's Specialty Care Center, Mars, Pennsylvania.
Born June 15, 1923 in Connoquenessing, Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Melvin Edward Johnston and the late Edna Pearl McKinnis Johnston.
Mr. Johnston was a welder at Armco for 32 years. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. Mr. Johnston was a graduate of Butler High School, class of 1941. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid outdoorsman.
Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marcella Grace Sarver Johnston whom he marriage on July 16, 1943, and by his son, Timothy J. Johnston and his wife Susan of Renfrew; two daughters, Sherrill Cashdollar and her husband Paul of Butler, Martha Robb and her husband Robert of Finleyville; six grandchildren, Phillip Robb of California, Gayle Robb of Brighton Heights, Christopher Cashdollar of Havertown, Beth Cashdollar of Philadelphia, Sarah Johnston of Pittsburgh, Molly Johnston of Renfrew; three great-grandchildren, James and Levi Robb, and Zoey Cashdollar, two sisters, Betty Gregory and her husband Tom of Renfrew, Dorothy Farner of Connoquenessing; and by a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Johnston.
Friends will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the St. John's Lutheran Church on Thursday, February 21, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Gary Brown of St. John's Lutheran Church and Reverend David Gerhardt of Trinity Emanuel Lutheran Church, Rochester, New York officiating. Interment will follow in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
