Roy K. Fowler

January 29, 1914 - May 23, 2004

Roy K. Fowler, 90 of Marigold Lane, Slippery Rock, died Sunday, May 23, 2004 in Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born January 29, 1914 in Richmond, Virginia, he was the son of Wilmer Fowler and Mary Cunningham.

Mr. Fowler worked for 47 years for G. C. Murphy Co. starting as a stock boy working up to district manager of 17 stores in the Indianapolis, Indiana area. He was Presbyterian. He was an avid fisherman and golfer in the Michigan and Florida areas. He was a member of #694 Victory Lodge F. & A. M., A.A.S.R. (Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite) Valley of New Castle, Syria Temple of Pittsburgh, Life member of Butler Lions Club, Moose, Elks, Butler Cubs Association, United Commercial Travelers of America, Butler Council No. 465 and life member of the Butler City Hunting and Fishing Club. He was president at the time of the purchase of current land and established the club at the East Butler location.

Mr. Fowler is survived by three sons and their wives, Roy K. and Theresa Fowler, Jr. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, William R. and Linda Fowler of Charleston, South Carolina, Robert L. and Gean Fowler of Butler, Pennsylvania, two daughters, Mrs. James (Joanne) Glasgow of Butler, Pennsylvania, Daughter, Judy Jones of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, Fourteen Grandchildren, Donald Glasgow, Sharon Perschke, Joy Bernhard, Pamela Drovillard, Kathy Scarpaci, Roy K. Fowler, III, Jeffrey Fowler, Dr. Ryan Fowler, Christene Cameron, Dr. Todd Fowler, Randy Fowler, Kim Fowler, Michelle Jones, and Danny Jones, Fifteen Great-Grandchildren, Claire Drovillard, Dana Drovillard, Matthew Wright, Michael Scarpaci, Wyatt Fowler, Eliza Fowler, Hannah Fowler, Jack Fowler, Phil Glasgow, Corey Glasgow, Dawn Glasgow, Gretchen Perschke, Kyle Perschke, Kamryn Bernhard and Mikayla Bernhard, three sisters, Margaret Schramm of Columbus, Ohio, Alma Mucy of Bellvernon, Pennsylvania, and Leatrice Downer, of Port Saint Lucie, Florida.

Mr. Fowler was preceded in death by his wife, F. Elizabeth Fowler, after 62 years of marriage. She passed away on August 10, 1996 and by three brothers and two sisters.

Friends will be received at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, PA, on Thursday, May 27, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., Friday, May 28, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend J. David Panther of First United Methodist Church officiating.

Hugh James Stratton

December 16, 1917 - May 22, 2004

Hugh James Stratton, age 86, formerly of Beechwood Boulevard, Butler, Pennsylvania passed away Saturday, May 22, 2004 at 10:10 A.M. at Worthington at Adams Memory Care Center in Adams Township under the loving care of their staff and that of Albert Gallatin Hospice.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 16, 1917, He was the son of the late Milo and Edna MacMurray Stratton.

Mr. Stratton was a 1935 graduate of Schenley High School, he marriage Mary Doran on June 28, 1940, he was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving in the Philippines during World War II as a Staff Sergeant. Mr. Stratton was a 1949 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in metallurgical engineering. He retired April 30, 1982 as the manager of Armco Butler Works after 33 years of service. He was a member of Hill United Presbyterian Church where he served as a trustee and as a member of session. Mr. Stratton was a former board member for the Butler Memorial Hospital, the Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, the YWCA and YMCA, and the Visiting Nurses Association. In 1981 he was the recipient of the Butler Chamber of Commerce's Man of the Year, Distinguished Service Award. He was very active with the Boy Scouts of America and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of the American Legion and Butler Lodge # 272 F. & A.M. Loraine Commandry of Knights Templar. He was very active with the United Way in Butler and was a great supporter of many community charities and civic foundations. He was involved in the formation of The Visiting Nurses Association. He was a member of Armco Park and Country Club, and the Esquire Club.

Mr. Stratton was preceded in death by his wife Mary Doran Stratton on September 24, 1998, and one infant son.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Eleanor) Weber and Mrs. Scott (Elaine) Tebay both of Butler, Pennsylvania and by four grandchildren and three nieces and nephews.

Friends and family of Hugh James Stratton will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania 16001 on Monday, May 24 from 7 to 9 P.M. and on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Funeral Services will be from the Hill United Presbyterian Church, 501 Second Street, Butler, Pennsylvania 16001 on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. with the Reverend Clark Sawyer and Reverend John Porter of The Hill United Presbyterian Church Officiating. Interment will follow in the North Side Cemetery Butler, Pennsylvania

Albert R. "Dick" McKnight

December 20, 1927 - May 20, 2004

Albert R. "Dick" McKnight, Sr, 76 of Evans City, Pennsylvania, died Thursday, May 20, 2004 at 7:45 p.m. in Butler Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Butler, Pennsylvania..

Born December 20, 1927 in Whitestown, PA, he was the son of Donald A. McKnight Sr. and Pearl A. Garvin.

Mr. McKnight owned and operated the Dick McKnight Garage in Connoquenessing Borough for twenty-five years. He transported and set-up mobile homes under the
firm name of Mobile Home Transporting, Inc. from which he retired after thirty years.
He was a Marine Corp veteran and served two terms, one from 1945 to 1949, the other from 1949 to 1952.
Mr. McKnight was mayor of Connoquenessing, Pennsylvania for at least 17 years. He was very active in the Connoquenessing Volunteer Fire Department for many years. At one time he was active in Boys Scouts of America and he was a Boy Scout Cub Master for a few years. He was a life member of the VFW. He enjoyed hunting, boating, and gardening.
He loved to attend the car races.

Surviving are three sons, A. R. "Rick" McKnight, Jr., Patrick McKnight and Michael McKnight, three daughters, Mrs. Loretta "Lori" Hershey, Mrs. William (Catherine) McGee, and Michele McKnight, fourteen grandchildren: Richard Nolan, Kaila, A. R. III (called "Trey") and Brandon McKnight; Patrick Roth (known as Little Pat), Amanda, Sarah, Michelle and Maggie McKnight; Jacob, and Rachael Hershey; and William, John and Matthew McGee, two sisters, Mrs. Clarence (Eleanor) Andre and Mrs. George (Edith) Snyder, three brothers, Fred McKnight, Ralph McKnight, and James McKnight, his former wife, Glee C. McKnight, and many nieces.

Preceding him in death were his four brothers and two sisters.

Friends will be received at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, PA, Saturday May 22, 2004 from 7 to 9 and Sunday May 23, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.

Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., Monday May 24, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. David Maitland of First Baptist Church officiating.

Interment will follow in Greenlawn Burial Estates.

Edna Spangler

July 13, 1921 - May 19, 2004

Edna Spangler, 82 of Shannon Road, Renfrew, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at 10:26 p.m. at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Born July 13, 1921 in Butler, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Lawrence Young and Mary Texter.

Mrs. Spangler was a homemaker. She was a member of White Oak Springs Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Tanglewood Senior Center, BUCOS and Coachman's Camping Club. She enjoyed her grandchildren, camping, traveling, and painting.

Mrs. Spangler is survived by five sons, Donald and Nonie Spangler of Butler, Pennsylvania, William and Deanna Spangler of Butler, Pennsylvania, Ronald and Becky Spangler of Prospect, Pennsylvania, Larry and Debbie Spangler of Renfrew, Pennsylvania, David Spangler of Renfrew, Pennsylvania, two daughters, Mrs. Roger (Linda) Davis of Monroe, North Carolina, Mrs. Dennis (Nancy) Lynn of Renfrew, Pennsylvania, two sisters, Mrs. Erma Mesner, Michigan, Mrs. Grace Hempfling of Butler, Pennsylvania, twelve grandchildren, two step grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Spangler was preceded in death by her husband Bennett H. Spangler, whom she marriage on November 7, 1942 and he passed away on September 27, 1982, by one brother and one sister.

Friends will be received at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, PA, on Friday, May 21, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m..

Services will be held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., Saturday, May 22, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Lee Dreyer officiating. Interment will follow in Butler County Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John's Specalty Care Center, 500 Wittenberg Way, Mars, Pennsylvania 16046.

David M. Freehling, Sr.

June 28, 1926 - May 18, 2004

David M. Freehling Sr., age 77 of Holyoke Road, Butler, Pennsylvania passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at 6:55 P.M. in the Fairhaven Rehabilitation Center in Upper Sandusky, Ohio.

Born in Butler, Pennsylvania on June 28, 1926, he was the son of the late Alvin Freehling and Helen Meeker Freehling. Mr. Freehling was a member of The First Baptist Church in Butler, The Berean Sunday School Class of the church and had been a former Sunday School teacher at the church. He was retired from IBM where he served as a technician for thirty-five years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.

Mr. Freehling is survived by three sons, David M. Freehling Jr. of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, Dale T. Freehling of Renfrew, Pennsylvania and Daniel B. Freehling of Butler, Pennsylvania, two daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Donna M.) Moore of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and Mrs. Dixie Freehling of East Brady, Pennsylvania, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Floyd (Rhoda) Huber of Butler, Pennsylvania and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Freehling was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy E. Stewart Freehling on September 14, 1987, and by two sons.

Friends and family of David M. Freehling will be received at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, Pennsylvania 16001 from 7 to 9 P.M., Thursday, May 20, 2004 and 2 to 4 and 7- to 9 P.M. Friday, May 21, 2004. Funeral services will be from the funeral home on Saturday, May 22, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. David Maitland of The First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in The Greenlawn Burial Estates, Mount Chestnut, Pennsylvania.

Dolores A. Huey

August 2, 1932 - May 17, 2004

Dolores A. Huey, 73 of Allison Park, died Monday, May 17, 2004 at 1:22 a.m. in U.P.M.C. Passavant Hospital.

Born August 2, 1930 in Butler, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of F. Dwight Simpson and Amber Powell.

Mrs. Huey was a registered industrial nurse and she previously was employed as an operating room nurse for Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and for Butler Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Huey also worked for Armco Steel, H.J. Heinz, Penn Central and Shiffler Division of U.S. Steel. She was a member of Parkwood United Presbyterian Church, Allison Park, Pennsylvania and she was a member of her church choir. She is an alumnus of Butler High School, class of 1947, where she was the salutatorian of her class. She was also an alumnus of Allegheny General Hospital School of Nursing class of 1950. She was a member of Southwestern Pennsylvania Occupational Health Nurses Association.

Surviving are her husband James R. Huey, a son, Neil S. Huey of Ross Township, Pennsylvania, three grandchildren and two nieces.

Preceding her in death were her one son and one brother.

There were no public visitation and private funeral services were held at the Thompson - Miller Funeral Home, Inc., Thursday, May 20, 2004. Interment was in Summit United Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
