Arthur J. Reese

Arthur J. "Art" Reese, 72, of 401 North St., Jim Thorpe, died Monday in Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton. He was the husband of Loretta (Youngkin) Reese. They were married 54 years last month.

He was a fireman at the Carbon County Courthouse, Jim Thorpe, for 12 years before retiring in 1987. Before that he was a truck driver and delivered coal for the former Neast & Company, Jim Thorpe.

Born in Tamaqua, he was a son of the late Arthur and Myrtle (Draper) Reese.

He was a member of Christ United Church of Christ, Jim Thorpe.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served with the 47th Tank Division in northern France, central Europe and Germany, where he received the Purple Heart.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Arthur W. and Randy L., both of Jim Thorpe; a sister, Betty, wife of Paul Bresslin of Pittsburgh; a brother, the Rev. Donald Reese of Lake Hauto; four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, William.

The Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Clara L. Waring

Mrs. Clara L. Waring, 92, of 85 Maple Drive, Palmerton, died Friday in Friends Hall, West Chester, Chester County. She was the wife of the late Robert K. Waring.

Born in Indian, Indiana County, she was a daughter of the late Leroy and Leah (Robinson) Lane.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Palmerton.

She was a member of the library board and hospital auxiliary, both of Palmerton, where she received a pin for 1,000 hours of hospital service in 1985; and was a volunteer for the Red Cross Bloodmobile.

Surviving are two sons, Robert K. of Downingtown, Chester County, and David L. of Portland, Ore.; a brother, Malcolm of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Leah Staley of Cambridge, Md., and Nancy Hebb of Baltimore; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The Cremation Society of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mary Z. McGroarty

Mrs. Mary Z. McGroarty, 86, of 201 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, died Monday in Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale. She was the widow of John McGroarty, who died in 1941.

She was employed by the former Atlas Powder Company, Reynolds, Tamaqua R.1, before retiring.

Born in Tamaqua, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Helen (Gazdik) Zupko.

She was a member of St. Jerome's Catholic Church and Senior Citizens, both of Tamaqua.

Surviving are a son, Tony of Paducah, Ky.; a sister, Mrs. Helen Daderko of Tamaqua; and two brothers, Arthur Revak of McAdoo and Michael Zupko of Tamaqua.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, John Zupko, Andy Revak and Walter Revak; and three sisters, Anna Fauzio, Margaret Bitner and Joan Deavor.

The Roche Funeral Home, 237 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.

Burd services

Funeral services of Charles "Kazook" Burd, 78, of 166 Dodson St., Mary D, who died Monday morning in his home, will be held on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the Roche Funeral Home, 237 E. Broad St., Tamaqua.

Born in MaryD, he was a son of the late Charles P. and Annie (Walakunis) Barkurtis.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and was a member of the crew that was responsible for arming the "Enola Gay".

He was a lifetime member of the West Penn Rod & Gun Club.

The Roche Funeral Home, 237 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.

Among the survivors of Richard M. "Richie" Ahner Jr., 31, of 2129 Long Run Road, Franklin Township, Lehighton, is his paternal grandfather, Willard A. Ahner Sr.

Moravek survivors
Mrs. Albina "Alice" Moravek, 87, of 33 E. Berea Ave., Summit Hill, who died Saturday, was also preceded in death by three brothers, John, Joseph and Stephen. Their names was inadvertently omitted from yesterday's obituary.

Henry A. Petritsch

Henry A. "Hen" Petritsch, 82, of 540 E. Elm St., Tamaqua, died this morning in Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton. He was the husband of Mary E. (Stidham) Petritsch.

Prior to retiring, he had been employed as a truck driver at the former Schaefer Brewery, Fogelsville.

Born in Hazleton, he was a son of the late John and Mary (Pjuko) Petritsch.

Petritsch was a member of St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church, Tamaqua.

Surviving with his wife are a son, Henry E. Petritsch Jr. of New Ringgold R.2; a daughter, Rose Marie Epler of Tamaqua; three sisters, Ernestine Petritsch of New Jersey, Mrs. Henrietta Matuskiewitz of Bethel, and Mrs. Valerie Pupko of Grier City; one brother, Fred Petritsch of Mahanoy City; six grandchildren and six-great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Francis, Jacob and Ernest Petritsch.

The Jon M. Zizelmann Funeral Home, 500 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.

June 18, 1997

Joseph Nierer Jr.

Joseph Nierer Jr., 81, of 4191 Cashew Drive, Walnutport, died Tuesday in his home. He was the husband of Winifred A.J. (Gable) Nierer.

He was a maintenance man at the former Dieters Foundry, Cherryville, for 43 years before retiring in 1977.

Born in Coplay, he was a son of the late Joseph Sr. and Rose (Neubaurer) Nierer.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Indianland, Cherryville.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Joseph F. of Walnutport, and John J. of Delps; a daughter, Jeanette, wife of Richard Beltz of Walnutport; brother Edward of Slatington; six sisters, Mrs. Robert (Rose) Henke of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Henry (Anna) Flowers and Mrs. Margaret Parry, both of Walnutport, Mrs. Helen Williams of Virginia Beach, Va., Caroline of Allentown and Mrs. Joseph (Josephine) Gasper of Bethlehem; and six grandchildren.

Lawrence K. Fluck

Lawrence K. Fluck, 82, of Palmer Township, died Monday in the Easton Hospital. He was the husband of Catherine A. (Brower) Fluck, who died in 1993.

He was a member and employee of Steamfitters Union Local 450, Philadelphia, for more than 25 years before retiring.

Born in Hellertown, he was a son of the late Eugene and Eleanor (Koffel) Fluck.

He was a former member of the Order of Fleas, Easton.

Surviving is a son, Larry R. of Palmer Township; three brothers, Elbert and Harold, both of Kunkletown, and Bruce of Columbus, Ohio; and a granddaughter.

Mrs. Warren C. Blose

Mrs. Pauline A. Blose, 77, of Mountain View Mobile Park, Walnutport, formerly o 362 W. Church St., Slatington, died Tuesday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. She was the wife of Warren C. Blose. They were married 58 years last October.

She was a screen printer at the former Fashion Prints, Catasauqua, for 18 years before retiring in 1974.

Born in Parryville, she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Stella (Smith) Youse.

She was a member of Union United Church of Christ, Neffs.

Surviving with her husband are three daughters, Patricia A., wife of Richard W. Serfass of Walnutport, Barbara J., wife of David A. Rauch of New Tripoli, and Donna M., wife of Donald C. Bowers of Kunkletown; a brother, Curtis of Parryville; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Robert L. Burger

Robert L. Burger, 53, of Kunkletown R.5, died Monday in Effort. He was the husband of Anna (Fehr) Burger. They had been married 32 years. He was pronounced dead at the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, after being involved in an accident at the intersection of SR3007 and SR3016 in Chestnuthill Township.

He was a heavy equipment operator for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 542, Norristown, since 1985. He was also a certified welder.

Born in Kresgeville, he was the son of the late William E. and Julie (Serfass) Burger.

A decorated chief warrant officer in the U.S. Army, having served two tours of duty in Vietnam, he retired from the service in 1983.

He was a graduate of U.C.L.A. with a degree in criminal justice.

He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Gilbert; the V.F.W. Memorial Post 5588 of Kunkletown; a lifetime member of the NRA; and a member of the Palmerton Rod and Gun Club.

Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Kimberly, wife of Jeffrey Borger of Kunkletown, and Cindy Kidd of Tacoma, Wash.; a son, Mark of Marshall Creek; five brothers, William, Harry, Stanley and Roger, all of Kunkletown, and Henry of Palmerton; seven sisters, Elmira Miller, Lillian Dorshimer, Sue Beers, Rose Smith, all of Kunkletown, Ida Kresge of Gilbert, Sadie Smith of Effort and Mabel Bonser of Stroudsburg R.6; and two grandsons.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Colin R. in 1987.

The Donald N. Gower Funeral Home Inc., Rte. 209, Gilbert, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Anna Forte

Mrs. Anna Forte, 84, of Buck Mountain, Barnesville, died Tuesday at home. She was the widow of Nicholas Forte, who died in 1995.

She worked for the former City Shirt Factory, Mahanoy City, and prior to that worked several years as a domestic care giver in White Plains, N.Y.

Born in Buck Mountain, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Pauline (Lenowitz) Muscavage.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mahanoy City.

Surviving are two sons, Robert, at home, and Nicholas of Northampton; a daughter, Carol Forte Rufus of Media; a brother, Edward of Mt. Laurel, N.J.; three sisters, Constance Pappalardo of White Plains, Helen Andrusichen of Coaldale, and Grace Kelly of Glendora, Calif.; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, John and Peter; and two sisters, Mary Faust and Justine Maher.

The Louis Truskowsky Funeral Home, 300 W. Center St., Mahanoy City, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Leroy Kaiser

Mrs. Joan L. Kaiser, 66, of Delaware Water Gap, died Tuesday at home. She was the wife of Leroy Kaiser. They were married for 48 years.

She was postmaster for Delaware Water Gap until retiring in 1994. Prior to that she worked at the main and philatelic windows of the Stroudsburg Post Office from 1980-87.

Born in Stroudsburg, she was a daughter of the late Thomas an Iona (Sebring) Hauser.

She was a member and deacon of the Presbyterian Church of Mountain, Delaware Water Gap, and participated in the ladies group.

She was active in the Girl Scouts and a member of the Delaware Water Gap Fire Company 28th Division Auxiliary and Stroudsburg Parent-Teacher Association.

Surviving with her husband are two daughters, Roxanne Kaiser-Antonowich of Delaware Water Gap, and Gwendolyn Mason of Saylorsburg; a sister, Virginia Boushell of Stroudsburg; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Theodore Horoshak

Theodore Horoshak, 84, of 26 E. Abbott St., Lansford, died Tuesday in Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale. He was the husband of Mary (Maholick) Horoshak.

Prior to retiring, he had been employed as a maitre d' in New York City hotels.

Born in Shamokin, he was a son of the late Simon and Anna (Telpash) Horoshak.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army.

The deceased was a 1931 graduate of Shamokin High School.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, is a son, Theodore of New York City, N.Y.

He was also preceded in death by a son, William.

The Holmes-Griffiths Funeral Home, 200 E. Bertsch St., Lansford, is in charge of arrangements.
