James A. Owens
James A. Owens, 55, of 11 Mast Road, Oley, Berks County, died Friday in the Hershey Medical Center, Hershey. He was the husband of Mary Ann (Henrich) Owens. They observed their seventh wedding anniversary in May.
He worked at Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., Trexlertown, for the past 30 years.
Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late William and Pearl (Storey) Owens.
He was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dryville.
Owens was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Surviving in addition to his widow are a son Scott of Allentown; three daughters, Patricia and Lisa, wife of Nelson Diaz, both of Allentown, and Tina Klein of Bethlehem; two brothers, William of Newark, Del., and Jeffrey of Kutztown; four sisters, Mrs. Sandra Cleaver of Emmaus, Sharon, wife of Forrest Gruber of Orefield, Shirley, wife of Ronald Kunkle of Germansville, and Sonja Moore of Lehighton; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Fiorini of Shillington, Berks County, and Pamela, wife of Michael Ulicny of Valley View, Schuylkill County; and 10 grandchildren.
Stephen R. Trudich
Stephen R. Trudich, 48, of 418 Reilly Ave., Tamaqua, died Friday in the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, Montour County, where he was a patient since July 2, when he was transferred from the Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale.
He was a laborer for the Fairmont Steel Foundry, Hamburg, since 1985.
Born in West Penn Township, he was a son of Franklin W. and Florence A. (Hill) Snyder of Tamaqua.
The deceased was of the Protestant faith.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a daughter, Sheila M. of Mahanoy City; two stepsons, Charles W. Smith of White Bear, Summit Hill, and Thomas P. Smith of Coaldale; and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Mary J. Billy
Mrs. Mary J. Billy, 90, of 2478 Man St., Northampton, died Saturday in the Mahoning Valley Nursing and Convalescent Center, Mahoning Township. She was the wife of the late Rev. J. Albert Billy.
Born in Lansford, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Susana (Mudroch) Jonas.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Evangelical Slovak Lutheran Church, Northampton, where she was a past vice president, a member of the choir, a Sunday school teacher and a past president of the Mary and Martha Ladies Aid Society.
During World War II, she was a volunteer with the Northampton Visiting Nurses Association and the Aviators of what is now the Lehigh Valley International Airport.
Mrs. Billy was a past secretary, corresponding secretary and board member of the Northampton Business and Professional Women's Club.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Ann, wife of Dr. Marvin C.G. Snyder of Lehighton, and Caroline T.B., wife of Alan M. Henion of Jacksonville, Fla.; four sons, J. Albert of Twinsburg, Ohio, Paul G. of Newark, Del., Milan L. of Northampton and Jan K. of Cherryville; a sister, Mrs. Anna Surochak of Lansford; 23 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
Samuel A. Smith
Samuel A. Smith, 70, of 75 Getz Dawl Road, Palmerton R.2, died Friday in the St. Luke Hospital, Fountain Hill, Bethlehem. He was the husband of Fern (Beers) Smith. They observed their 47th wedding anniversary last month.
He was a mechanic for the S.P. Marcaro Trucking Company, Souderton, before retiring.
Born in Kunkletown, he was a son of the late Asher and Bertha (Kuehner) Smith.
He was a member of Jerusalem Lutheran Church, Trachsville.
Smith was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was a life member and past president of the Towamensing Township Volunteer Fire Company.
Surviving in addition to his widow are three sons, Michael of Roseville, Mich., Samuel E. of Seemsville and Jeremy of Palmerton; three daughters, Kathy, wife of Norman Engle of Bowmanstown, and Barbara, wife of Philip Scherer, and Belinda, wife of Michael J. Taschler, both of Palmerton; three brothers, Clarence in Florida, Roy of Kunkletown and Clark of Effort; and 16 grandchildren.

John C. Fertally Jr.
John C. Fertally Jr., 85, of 66 Spring St., Weatherly, died Saturday in his home. He was the husband of Helen E. (Tupy) Fertally. They observed their 64th wedding anniversary last month.
A member of the United Trainworkers Union, he was a trainman and conductor for the Lehigh Valley Railroad, now Conrail, for 50 years before retiring in 1976. He also operated a sporting goods store in Weatherly, where he sold flies he tied and designed.
Born in Weatherly, he was a son of the late John Sr. and Anna Veronica (Fadden) Fertally.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Weatherly.
Fertally was a member and director of the Silver Ridge Hunting Club, Weatherly, and a member of the Hazleton Moose Lodge.
Surviving in addition to his widow are a son Francis of Tamaqua; three daughters, Monica Teprovich of Quakake, Susan of Miami, Fla., and Becky Vasinda of Hazleton; a brother William of Woodbridge, N.J.; two sisters, Anna T., RN, and Agnes Simkovich, both of Weatherly; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a son, John III; and four sisters, Margaret, Anna Mae and Helen Fertally and Mary Schmeer.

Stanley H. Heitz
Stanley H. Heitz, 87, of 406 E. Washington St., Slatington, died Saturday in ManorCare Health Services, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Frances M. Heitz.
He was a laborer for the U.S. Gauge Division of Ametek, Inc., Sellersville, for over 31 years before retiring in 1975.
Born in Finland Township, Bucks County, he was a son of the late Lewis H. and Alice (Grant) Heitz.
He was of the Lutheran faith.
Surviving in addition to his widow are a stepson, Roy Miller Jr. of Perkasie; a stepdaughter, Nancey V. Person of Aquashicola; seven step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Dennis P. Mahoney
Mrs. Carol Mahoney, 57, of Long Pond, formerly of Brooklyn, N.Y., died Friday in her home. She was the wife of Dennis P. Mahoney.
She was an operator for the New York Telephone Company for 32 years and was a member of its Pioneers.
Born in Brooklyn, she was a daughter of the late David and Alice Cohen.
She attended Christ the King Catholic Church, Blakeslee.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Lisa Godino of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, Michael Movelli of Brooklyn; two sisters, Pearl of Brooklyn and Lorraine Diaz of Chicago, Ill.; two granddaughters, nieces and nephews.
Nellie V. Diefenderfer
Nellie V. Diefenderfer, 102, of 233 Iron St., Lehighton, died Saturday in her home.
A concert pianist and music educator, she taught music at the Diefenderfer School of Music and Arts, Lehighton, which she owned and operated for 58 years before retiring in 1975. Previously, she was director of Music at the Bucks County Montessori School and a faculty member at Combs College of Music and Hamilton School of Music, both in Philadelphia; the Studio Club, New York City, N.Y.; and Cedar Crest College, Allentown.
Also a soloist with symphony orchestras, she played at the Studio Club, Carnegie Hall, Alberto Jonas Artist Club and Herbert Wilbur Greene's Studios.
She graduated in 1917 from Combs College of Music as a concert pianist with a degree in piano pedagogy. She studied at New York University and the University of Pennsylvania, where she received a degree in music theory.
The deceased also studied piano at Leipzig Conservatory in Germany and with piano virtuoso Alberto Jonas in New York City. She studied dramatics at the National School of Dramatic Art, Philadelphia, and American Academy, New York City, and ballet technique and dancing in Philadelphia and New York.
She attended numerous master music seminars all over the world from 1956-74.
Born in Lehighton, she was a daughter of the late Howard A. and Elmira (Rehrig) Diefenderfer.
She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Lehighton.
Surviving are a niece and a nephew.

Mrs. Edward C. Reabold
Mrs. Sarah E. Reabold, 77, of 3 E. Chipmunk Trail, Jim Thorpe, died Friday evening in the Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton. She was the wife of Edward C. Reabold. They observed their 57th wedding anniversary on Feb. 17.
She was a retired sewing machine operator, and last worked as a floor lady for the former Kathy-Ann Sportswear, Jim Thorpe. She and her husband had recently been working for Snyder's Florists, Jim Thorpe, which is owned by her daughter and son-in-law, Roxanne and August Long of Jim Thorpe.
Born in Summit Hill, she was a daughter of the late George and Kathryn (Fredericks) Lager.
She was a member of the Episcopal Parish of St. Mark and St. John, Jim Thorpe.
Mrs. Reabold belonged to the Ladies Society of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen.
Surviving in addition to her husband and daughter are two others daughters, Kathryn, wife of Charles Albeck of Allentown, and Marlene, wife of Thomas Diehm, also of Jim Thorpe; a brother George of Jim Thorpe; a sister Doris, wife of Donald Boehrer of Allentown; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Edward "Ned," and a brother Ralph.

Thomas J. Dillon, 81, of 212 Market St., Tamaqua, who died suddenly on Friday in his home, was also preceded in death by a brother Eugene.
Mrs. Henry Sharman
Mrs. Edna M. Flicker Sharman, 68, and her husband Henry, of 1 Aspen Ave., South Heidelberg Township, died Wednesday night after the single-engine Piper Cherokee aircraft in which they were passengers crashed into Penobscot Bay off Maine.
Also killed in the crash were her sister and brother-in-law, Beryl and Douglas Reed of Waterville, Me.
Mrs. Sharman was preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene W. Flicker, who died on March 18, 1972. The couple formerly resided in Lehighton.
For 15 years, Mrs. Sharman was employed as a tour escort for Roamer Tours and Travel, Reading and Wyomissing, retiring in 1990.
Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late George F. and Frances (Benstead) Evans.
She was a member of Calvary United Church of Christ, Reading.
She was a 1947 graduate of Mount Penn High School.
Surviving are a son, Jeffrey Flicker of Silver Spring, Md.; a daughter Judy, wife of Paul Curran of Springfield, Va.; two stepsons, Henry R. Jr. of Sinking Spring and John S. of South Heidelberg Township; a stepdaughter, Wendy Sharman of Wyomissing; four grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
James E. Gombert Sr.
James E. Gombert Sr., 77, of 1002 Mill Road, Lehighton, died Saturday in the Sacred Heart Hospital, Allentown. He was the husband of the late Rose M. (Broney) Gombert.
He owned and operated a general store in Mahoning Valley, Lehighton, for more than 30 years before retiring.
Born in Mahoning Township, he was a son of the late Adam and Anna (Smith) Gombert.
He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Mahoning Valley.
Gombert was a staff sergeant in the Army during World War II, having served in Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was a recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with four Bronze stars.
He was a founder of the Mahoning Valley Ambulance Association; a charter member of the Mahoning Valley Fire Company; a life member of V.F.W. Post 5069, West Penn Township; and a member of American Legion Post 314, Lehighton, and the East Penn Sporting Club.
Surviving are a son, James E. Jr. of Macungie; a daughter Kay, wife of Guy F. Zern III of Mahoning Valley; and twin granddaughters.

Francis C. Henninger, 66, of East Greenville, formerly of Germansville, died Sunday in the home of his son, Gene C. of East Greenville.
The deceased was the husband of the late Perma T. (Kunkel) Henninger.
He worked in the housekeeping department of Cedarbrook, South Whitehall Township, for 15 years before retiring in 1995.
Born in Summit Hill, he was a son of the late Frank and Pearl (Kistler) Henninger.
He was a member of the New Life Lutheran Church, New Tripoli.

Mrs. Lisa Ann Muthard, 37, of Zionsville, died Saturday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. She was the wife of Donald K. Muthard. They observed their 15th wedding anniversary last month.
She was a billing supervisor at the Heart Care Group, formerly Cardiovascular Associates, Allentown, for 19 years.
Born in Allentown, she was a daughter of George W. Harper of Emmaus and the late Phyllis (Kusse) Harper, and a stepdaughter of Erika (Weith) Harper, also of Emmaus.
The deceased was a member of Western Salisbury Jerusalem Lutheran Church, Salisbury Township.

Stephen P. Stone, 85, of 217-1/2 W. Kline Ave., Lansford, died Sunday in the Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale. He was the husband of the late Susan E. (Kitchko) Stone.
He was a meat manager for the former A & P Store, Tamaqua, and other stores, for many years before retiring.
Born in Lansford, he was a son of the late Andrew and Mary (Regena) Stone.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Lansford.
Surviving are two sons, David of Bethlehem and Stephen Jr. of Schenectady, N.Y.; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by seven brothers, John, Andrew, George, Joseph, Frank, Edward and Peter; and two sisters, Mary Jukubco and Anna Stone.

She was an engraver for J.A. Rinehart & Company, Canadensis, for 17 years.
Born in Price Township, she was a daughter of the late Peter T. and Hettie Jane (Smith) VanWhy.
She was a member of the Moravian Church of Canadensis.
Surviving are five daughters, Donna Marie Campbell of Morristown, N.J., Rae Ronger of Mountainhome, Hettie Bixler of Canadensis and Letty Neison and Clara Fellows, both of Cresco; two sons, Clark D. Smith and Samuel L. Jones, both of Cresco; two brothers, Clyde of Cresco and Robert of Mount Pocono; 21 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Elsie V. Snyder
Mrs. Elsie V. Snyder, 94, of the Phoebe Home, Allentown, died Saturday in the home. She was the widow of Harvey E.D. Snyder.
Born in Egypt, she was a daughter of the late Irvin and Mary E. (Frantz) Guth.
She was a member of the Egypt United Church of Christ, Whitehall Township, and the Phoebe Home Auxiliary, Allentown.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Marion Butz of Coplay, Hilda, wife of Clark Gower of Whitehall, and Annetta, wife of James Geiger of Lady Lake, Fla.; two sons, Ray G. of Coopersburg and Lee S. of Walnutport; 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. William A. Kline
Mrs. Edna H. Kline, 76, of Zionsville, died Sunday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. She was the wife of William A. Kline. They observed their 57th wedding anniversary in February.
She was a sewing machine operator for the Collegeville Flag Company, formerly of Zionsville, for many years before retiring.
Born in Hosensack Schuylkill County, she was a daughter of the late Howard J. and Alice (Freyer) Hillegass.
She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Old Zionsville.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Kenneth G. of Alburtis; a daughter, Mary Ann, wife of Robert Kohler of Pennsburg; a brother Lloyd of Red Hill; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Floyd F. Krock
Floyd F. Krock, 80, of 246 Willow Road, Walnutport, died Thursday in ManorCare Health Services, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Helen G. (Eberts) Krock. They observed their 57th wedding anniversary in December.
He worked for what is now Essroc, Nazareth, for 17 years before retiring in 1979, and previously had been employed by H.S. Campbell, Inc., Bethlehem, for many years. During World War II, he worked for the Bethlehem Steel Corporation.
Born in Upper Nazareth Township, he was a son of the late Daniel J. and Eva S. (Rapp) Krock.
He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Laurys Station, and the American Association of Retired Persons, Kreidersville.
Surviving in addition to his widow are a son, Daniel E. of Wind Gap; five daughters, Barbara, wife of Richard Roth of Sheppton, Schuylkill County, Shirley, wife of Sherwood Keenhold of Moorestown, Dorothea, wife of David Werner of Ackermanville, Sherry, wife of David Lambert of Palmerton, and Patricia of Bethlehem; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a son Ernest.
Jay A. Kleinsmith Sr.
Jay A. Kleinsmith Sr., 67, of 8005 Nancy Lane, Ellenton, Fla., formerly of Norristown, died Wednesday in his home. He was the husband of Marie R. Kleinsmith.
He was an instructor for the Central Montgomery County Vocational-Technical School, Norristown, before retiring.
Born in Allentown, he was a son of Mrs. Myrtle Weaver of Charleston, W. Va.
He was a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of the USS Satyr Association, American Legion Post 309, Palmetto, Fla., and the Chapel of the Four Chaplains, Philadelphia.
Kleinsmith was of the Lutheran faith.
He belonged to the Point Loma Masonic Lodge No. 620, San Diego, Calif., and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Norristown.
Surviving in addition to his widow and mother are three daughters, Terri Lynn Kilrain of Ephrata and Sheree Lynn Shoemaker of New Providence, both in Lancaster County, and Gina Dragano of Ellenton; a son, Jay Arthur Jr. of Reinholds, Lancaster County; a sister, Wilma Lease of Mertztown; two brothers, David Crone of Slatington and David Weaver of Martinsburg, W. Va.; and seven grandchildren.
Mrs. Joseph L. Makuch
Mrs. Gertrude Makuch, 50, of 89 N. Lehigh Gorge Drive, Weatherly R.2, died Thursday in the Hazleton General Hospital. She was the wife of Joseph L. Makuch. They observed their 30th wedding anniversary last Monday.
She was a certified pharmacy technician and assistant manager of the Weatherly Area Community Pharmacy, where she worked for the past 14 years.
Born in Bethlehem, she was a daughter of the late George and Gertrude (Neidlinger) Sherman, and a foster daughter of the late Henry and Ethne (Neidlinger) Wagner.
She was a member of St. Peter Episcopal Church, Hazleton; the American Legion Post 360 Auxiliary, Weatherly; and the Friends of the National Park, Gettysburg.
The deceased was a 4-H leader in Laurytown, rural Weatherly, for many years.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Michele, wife of Stanley Leininger III of Weatherly, and Karen Makuch-Supon of Hazleton; three brothers, George of Mahanoy City, Edward of Bethlehem and Frank of Allentown; five sisters, Ruth, wife of Ronald Danishefsky of Allentown, Joan, wife of Robert Kressley of New Tripoli, Carol, wife of Monroe Breidigan of Schuylkill Haven, Althea Ebert of Pottsville and Marie Sherman-Abromitis of Elkton, Md.; and nieces and nephews.
George J. Setzer
George J. Setzer, 83, of Saylorsburg R.1, died Friday in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Harold Fluck of Saylorsburg R.1, with whom he resided for the past two weeks.
The deceased was the husband of Erma (Fordner) Setzer, who died in 1993.
He was an engineer with the Jersey Central Railroad for 33 years before retiring in 1975.
Born in Saylorsburg, he was a son of the late Elijah and Ida (Longacre) Setzer.
He was the oldest member of the Interdenominational Church of Clearfield, Wind Gap, where he was a former trustee.
Surviving in addition to his daughter are a son Elton of Stroudsburg; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter Linda.
Walter E. Fetherolf
Walter E. Fetherolf, 71, of New Tripoli, died Thursday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Ruth I. (Dorshimer) Fetherolf. They observed their 46th wedding anniversary last December.
He was a supervisor for the former Hess's, later the Bon Ton department store, Allentown, for 25 years before retiring in 1990.
Born in Jacksonville, he was a son of the late Edwin and Annie (Krick) Fetherolf.
He was a member of the New Life Lutheran Church, New Tripoli.
Fetherold was an Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving in addition to his widow are three daughters, Wanda L., at home, Lori A., wife of Roland Lenhart of New Tripoli, and Melanie R., wife of Eric Lynn of Northampton; three sisters, Marion Bond of Kempton, Mae, wife of Julian Michels of Hendersonville, N.C., and Dorothy, wife of Geoffrey Fosbrook of Bowmanstown; and four grandchildren.
Stephen V. Tomasovich
Stephen V. Tomasovich, 58, of 50 Bull Run St., Coaldale, died Saturday in the home of his sister, Amelia Matrician of West Easton.
He was an administrative technician for the U.S. government in the Philadelphia area, and was also a clerk at Nicholas and Smith Trains, Philadelphia.
Born in Coaldale, he was a son of the late Stephen and Mary (Malick) Tomasovich.
A 1956 graduate of the former Coaldale High School, he was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Tomasovich was a member of SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church and the American Legion Post, both of Coaldale.
His sister is his only survivor.

Paul Martinec
Paul Martinec, 69, of 504 W. Water St., Coaldale, died Friday in the Graduate Hospital, Philadelphia, where he was a patient for a month.
He was an office worker for the U.S. government in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
Born in Coaldale, he was a son of the late Stephen and Eloysia (Hlavka) Martinec.
A 1945 graduate of the former Coaldale High School, he was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church and the American Legion and V.F.W. posts, all of Coaldale; and Elks Lodge No. 592, Tamaqua.
Surviving are two brothers, John of Hatboro, Montgomery County, and Joseph of Harrisburg; four sisters, Helen Hand and her twin, Helene Melnick, both of Harrisburg, Anne Ryan in New Jersey and Margaret Lewandowski of Houston, Tex.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a brother Stephen; and two sisters, Rose and Mary.

Michael (Turcmonovich) Turks, 74, of 720 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, died Sunday in his home. He was the husband of the late Isabelle (Witcofsky) Turks.
Prior to retiring in 1989, he had been employed by Bethlehem Mines. He also owned and operated TV Funnel Cakes and previously worked for the Home Life Insurance Company, Tamaqua, as an agent.
Born in Lansford, he was a son of the late Wash and Mary (Pregano) Turcmonovich.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army's 87th Infantry, participating in The Battle of the Bulge.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Lansford. A 1940 graduate of the former Lansford High School, he was also a member of the East End Fire Company, Tamaqua; the Panther Valley Golden Agers; Second Mountain Gun Club, Orwigsburg; Tamaqua and Shanandoah Senior Citizens; and was a past secretary of the Tamaqua Volunteer Firemen's Relief organization.
He is survived by a son, Michael G. Turks of Belaire, Md.; a daughter, Carol, wife of Blase Marchetti of Tamaqua; a brother, John Turcmonovich of Lansford; a sister, Mrs. Victor (Mary T.) Pituch of Lansford; and three grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Wishousky.
The E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.
