Harry D. Shiffer
Harry D. Shiffer, 81, of Kresgeville, died Wednesday in the Palmerton Hospital. He was the husband of the late Ruth Emily (Unangst) Shiffer.
He was an engineer for the Philadelphia, Bethlehem and New England Railroad, a subsidiary of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation, for many years before retiring.
Born in Moore Township, he was a son of the late Oscar D. and Savannah M. (Schlegel) Shiffer.
He was a member St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Bethlehem.
Shiffer was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Palmerton Rod and Gun Club.
Surviving are three sons, Harry D. Jr. of Hamburg, Daniel B. of Merrimack, N.H., and Kenneth L. of Kunkletown; a brother Norman of Bath; a sister Mary, wife of Ralph Ervin of Walnutport; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Peter Zahorodny
Peter Zahorodny, 79, of 230 Broadview Drive, Jim Thorpe, died Wednesday evening in the Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton. He was the husband of the late Mary (Rosko) Zahorodny, who died on Feb. 9, 1991.
He worked for the Hoffman-LaRoche Pharmaceutical Company, Nutley, N.J., until retiring.
Born in Northampton, he was a son of the late Paul and Tessie (Kazmirik) Zahorodny.
He was a member of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church, Palmerton.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda Humphrey of Phillips, Maine, Arlene Pisarski of Plover, Wis., and Patricia, wife of James Schafer of Jim Thorpe; a brother John of Taylor, S.C.; two sisters, Anna of Manhattan, N.Y., and Helen Dubensky of Massapequa Park, N.Y.; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Clara M. Handwerk
Clara M. Handwerk, 74, formerly of Allentown, died Thursday in Cedarbrook, South Whitehall Township.
Born in Berlinsville, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Sabina (Kunkle) Handwerk.
Surviving are a son, Leon M. Wetzel of Bath; a sister, Evelyn Hebelka of Allentown; and eight grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Larry C. Wetzel.
John J. Keating
John J. "Jack" Keating, 77, of Pleasant View Lake, Brodheadsville, died Thursday in the Palmerton Hospital. He was the husband of June (Finley) Keating. They observed their 56th wedding anniversary last November.
He was a wholesale inventory manager for Kelly Car and Truck Center, Emmaus, and previously had worked for Motor Twins Ford, Wilkes-Barre; Community Buick, Kingston; and the Ertley dealership, formerly of Kingston.
Born in Edwardsville, Luzerne County, he was a son of the late James and Cecelia (Barowski) Keating.
He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Brodheadsville.
Surviving in addition to his widow are two sons, Patrick of Bethlehem and Mark of Lake Arrowhead, Waluska, Ga.; a brother James of Folcroft, Delaware County; two sisters, Mary of Edwardsville and Carol of Lyndhurst, N.J.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a son Christopher.
Mary Catherine Kern
Mary Catherine Kern, 58, of 430 E. Bertsch St., Lansford, died Thursday in her home.
She was a registered nurse and supervisor at the St. Joseph Hospital, Philadelphia, where she graduated from its nursing school.
Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Mary F. (O'Donnell) Kern.
She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Lansford.
Surviving are a brother Paul of Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County; a niece and a nephew.

Eugene C. Abbott
Eugene C. Abbott, 66, of 974 Engler Road, Plainfield Township, died Thursday in his home. He was the husband of Linda J. (Uhler) Abbott. They observed their 42nd wedding anniversary last October.
He was a chemical operator for the former J.T. Baker Chemical Company, now Mallenkrodt Chemical Company, Phillipsburg, N.J., for 42 years before retiring.
Born in Columbia, Lancaster County, he was a son of the late James F. and Ruth (Collins) Abbott.
He was a medic in the Army during the Korean Conflict.
Surviving in addition to his widow are two sons, Eugene D. and Michael K., both of Plainfield Township; a daughter, Thelma Jeanne, wife of Thomas Balliet of Palmerton; a brother, James C. of Conway, S.C.; and a granddaughter.
Edward M. Cauley
Edward M. Cauley, 95, of Delano, died Thursday in the Manor Care Convalescent Center, Sinking Spring, Berks County. He was the husband of the late Minnie (Faust) Cauley, who died Dec. 13, 1969.
Prior to retiring, he was a machinist for the Lehigh Valley Railroad.
Born in Delano, he was a son of the late William and Bridget (Purcell) Cauley.
He was a member of St. Canicus Catholic Church, Mahanoy City, the Knights of Columbus and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, and a life member of the Delano Fire Company.
Surviving are a daughter Joan, wife of William Guistwite of West Lawn, Berks County; a brother Vincent of Delano; two grandchildren, a great-grandchild and nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by four brothers, James, John, Joseph and Thomas; and three sisters, Katheryn, Julie and Ellen.

George E. Bunk
George E. Bunk, 62, of 229 First St., Weatherly, died Thursday morning in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Joanne (Caplo) Bunk.
He worked as an executive steward at the Mountain Laurel Resort, White Haven, retiring in 1994.
Born in West Hazleton, he was a son of the late George and Lottie (Wojciechowski) Bunk.
He was a 1952 graduate of West Hazleton High School and was affiliated with Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Nesquehoning, and Salem United Church of Christ, Weatherly.
Bunk was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Froce, retiring with the rank of technical sergeant. He saw service in Vietnam.
He was a member of the Conyngham V.F.W., Luzerne County.
Surviving in addition to his widow are a son Stephen of Bath, England; two stepsons, Daniel Buglio of Beaver Meadows and Brian Buglio of Weatherly; two stepdaughters, Jennifer, wife of Timothy Harkins of Weatherly, and Candace, wife of Aaron Hoppes of Hamburg; four sisters, Mania Bobeck of West Hazleton, Mrs. Robert (Florence) Nause of Sugarloaf, Mrs. James (Patricia) Lencalis of Orange and Mrs. Gary (Loretta) Shoepe of Sugarloaf, Luzerne County; a grandson and nieces and nephews.
