Born Dec. 6, 1946, in Mechanicsburg, he was a son of Clara Dyarman Baker of Mechanicsburg and the late Elmer Edgar Baker.
A 1964 graduate of Boiling Springs High School and a 1972 graduate of Penn State University, Mr. Baker attended graduate school at the University of Georgia.
He was a musican for 23 years and was the house musician-entertainer at Allenberry Carriage Room, Boiling Springs, for 19 years. He also was an auditor for South Middleton Township.
He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Carlisle and Penn State University Alumni Club.
In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife of 18 years, Elizabeth J. Owens Baker; four daughters, Kelley D. Heinlen of Carlisle, Dawn E. Bischoff of Manahawkin, N.J., Jennifer L. Dugan of Washington, D.C., and Rebecca L. Hand of Philadelphia; two brothers, James N. of Boiling Springs and Robert E. of San Francisco, Calif.; one sister, Cecilia M. Viti of Mechanicsburg; five grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin E. Baker.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Patrick Shrine Church, 140 E. Pomfret St., Carlisle. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, North Middleton Township, at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing or visitation.

James S. Conklin of 122 Strayer Drive, Carlisle, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 1997, in Carlisle Hospital.
He was a retired teacher from Carlisle Area School District and retired as a colonel from the U.S. Army in 1970.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Carlisle Exchange Club, Fraternal Order of Elks, Veterans of Vietnam War, Reserve Officers Association and other service organizations.
He served in World War II, the Korean War and served two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts and served in the First Cavalry Division when it was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation.
He graduated second in his class at Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth and served on the staff of the Army War College in Carlisle when he retired.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth D. Cauley Conklin; a daughter, Lynn Conklin Power; a son, James T.; a brother, John; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia.
Services of requiem eucharist will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in St. John's Church, on the Square, Carlisle, with the Rev. Dr. Mark A. Scheneman and the Rev. Marcia Wilkinson officiating. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery, Carlisle.
Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Services for Sarah Anna Margaret Sheaffer, 88, formerly of 217 E. Orange St., Shippensburg, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, 112 W. King St., Shippensburg.
She died Friday, Aug. 22, 1997, in Shippensburg Health Care Center.
Born Aug. 29, 1908, in Southampton Township, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Edward and Tressie Varner Sheaffer.
Mrs. Sheaffer was retired from the former Valley Baking Co., Shippensburg.
She was a member of Prince Street United Brethren Church and had attended the Sunshine Sunday School, Shippensburg, for many years.
Surviving are her daughter, Ruth V. Barnett of Shippensburg; three grandchildren, Richard E. Barnett of Stoughton, Wis., and Syvilla A. Barnett and Edward L. Sheaffer, both of Shippensburg; four great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
The Rev. Garry L. Culler will officiate at Tuesday's service. Burial will be in Cleversburg Cemetery, Southampton Township.

Services for Merle E. "Smitty" Smith Sr., 61, of 53 Marilyn Drive, North Middleton Township, will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle.
He died Friday, Aug. 22, 1997, in Carlisle Hospital.
Born Feb. 10, 1936, in Carlisle, he was a son of the late Irvin and Sarah Moyer Smith.
A 1954 graduate of Carlisle High School, Mr. Smith retired in 1996 from the Mechanicsburg Mens' Club.
He was a member of Mechanicsburg Mens' Club, Carlisle Eagles Club and White Circle Club of Carlisle. He also was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife, Beverly A. Bugosh Smith; two sons, Merle E. Jr. of Middleburg and Steve A. of Newville; two daughters, Debra M. Maclay of Carlisle and Tammy J. Mislyan of Shermans Dale; a stepson, Michael R. Smitley of Port Orchard, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Mary Ann Durain of Carlisle; a brother, Michael of Newville; a sister, Helen Steinour of Carlisle; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Edward E. Dyche will officiate at Tuesday's service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Born Sept. 10, 1919 in Marion, he was a son of the late Bruce and Blanche Barnhart Etter.
Mr. Etter was a plumber at Carlisle Barracks, retiring in 1975.

Daron J. Jacoby, 18, of 2360 Biglerville Road, Gettysburg, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 1997 as a result of an automobile accident.
Born April 27, 1970 in Gettysburg, he was a son of Donald L. and Sharon N. Smith Jacoby.
He attended Biglerville High School and was an employee of Jacoby's Furniture Shop, Gettysburg.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Dana J. of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Claudia M. of Tampa, Fla.; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith of Aspers and his paternal grandmother, Bonnie Lee Jacoby of Gettysburg.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Ann Byers.
