Private funeral services for Charles V. Barnhart, 83, of 120 Orchard Ave., Chambersburg, will be held at the convenience of the family.
He died Friday, Oct. 31, 1997 at Hershey Medical Center.
Born Oct. 30, 1914 in Ringgold, Md, he was a son of the late Charles F. and Mabel J. Gardenhour Barnhart. He was retired as an owner and operator of restaurants in Hanover and Chambersburg.
Mr. Barnhart was a member of the Marine Corps League of Hume, McNeal Byers AmVets Post 224, and Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 48 of Chambersburg.
Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Hampton of Fayetteville and Cathy Jo Chaney of Chambersburg; four sisters, Madeline Smiley, Thelma Hummer and Armatha Haugh of Waynesboro and Betty Carbaugh of New Franklin; a brother, Elwood of Waynesboro; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, one daughter, six brothers and two sisters.
There will be no public viewing. Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.
The family requests omission of flowers. Memorial contributions can be made to Chambersburg Hospital for Life Line Services, 112 N. 7th St., Chambersburg 17201.

Herbert E. Griest, 82, of 999 Upper Bermudian Road, Gardners, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997 at Whispering Pines Assisted Living Center, York Springs.
Born Aug. 13, 1915 in Huntington Township, Adams County, he was a son of the late Christian F. and Edna Fanus Griest and the widower of the former Janet E. Beam, who died in 1994.
Mr. Griest was engaged in general farming his entire life.
He was a member of Upper Bermudian Lutheran Church, Gardners, and a former Sunday school teacher for many years. He was also a member of the Pennsylvania Farmers Association and the Williams Grove Steam Engines Association.
He is survived by a son, Alvin H. of Gardners; eight sisters, Violet Brand, Romaine Weidner, Dorothy Bream and Hilda Miller of Gardners, Evelyn Eichelberger and Velma Pentz of York Springs, Joan Bream of Carlisle and Carolyn Griest of Laurelton; three brothers, Amos of Dover, Melvin A. of Gardners and Lester of Mt. Holly Springs; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda M. Kerrigan.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Dugan Funeral Home, 111 S. Main St., Bendersville, with the Rev. Kenneth G. Swick officiating. Interment will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, York Springs.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Alma Doris Kauffman, 81, of Carlisle, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997 in Sarah A. Todd Nursing Home, Carlisle.
Born Feb. 11, 1916 in Greencastle, she was a daughter of the late Susan Wengert Stockslager and the widow of Easton Kauffman, who died Dec. 13, 1982.
Mrs. Kauffman was a housewife.
Surviving are two sons, Glenn E. of Carlisle and Harold E. of Duncannon; two daughters, Doris M. Garman of Carlisle and Donna Hurley of Bloserville; two brothers, John Stockslager of Mercersburg and Alvey Stockslager of Fayetteville; a sister, Hazel Wiles of Carlisle; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Egger Funeral Home, Newville, is handling arrangements.
Memorial contributions can be made to Sarah A. Todd Nursing Home, 1000 W. South St., Carlisle 17013.

Funeral services for George L. "Buzz" Hepfer, 60, of 1577 Streamside Drive, Chambersburg, will be held Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.
He died Saturday, Nov. 1, 1997 in Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Feb. 23, 1937 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Frederick J. and Nettie F. Custer Hepfer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Hepfer retired from Chambersburg School System in 1981, where he was a custodial worker. He was a member of Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46 of Chambersburg.
He is survived by his wife, Freda R. Craig Hepfer of Chambersburg; two daughters, Genice R. and Georgia L. Hepfer, both of Chambersburg; five brothers, Lester of Waynesboro, Robert J., John and Joseph F. of Chambersburg and Samuel of Fawn Grove; five sisters, Florence Tice of St. Thomas, Rosie France of Carlisle, Ruth Weisgarber of Chambersburg, Violet Vanderau of Waynesboro and Dorothy Kennedy of Shippensburg.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
Pastor Lee Gehman will officiate at Tuesday's services. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Shippensburg.
Friends may call from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Military services at graveside will be conducted by members of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Chambersburg.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg 17201.

Robert H. Kohr, 59, of 101 Mountain Lane, Silver Spring Township, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997 in his home.
Born July 9, 1938 in Mechanicsburg, he was a son of the late Edward H. and Ruth S. Forney Kohr.
Mr. Kohr was employed by Kint Corp. of Harrisburg.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Silver Spring Township; Carlisle Fish and Game Association; Overview Anglers Association; New Cumberland Fishing and Boating Association; and National Rifle Association.
Surviving are his wife, Doris E. Hopkins Kohr; three daughters, Robin L. Kramer of New Cumberland, Denise S. Lukoskie of Mechanicsburg and Victoria A. Graft of Jonestown; a brother, Gordon W. of Enola; and three grandsons.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg, with the Rev. Eric N. Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Stone Church Cemetery, Silver Spring Township.
There will be no viewing; however, friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m Thursday at the funeral home.

Services for Natale J. "Nat" Carbone Sr., 68, of 3737 Spring Road, Middlesex Township, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle.
He died Saturday, Nov. 1, 1997 in Hershey Medical Center.
Born Dec. 2, 1928 in Red Bank, N.J., he was a son of Mary Lucia Carbone of Red Bank.
A retired auto mechanic for Rohrer Bus Service in Duncannon, Mr. Carbone was later employed by the Flying J of Carlisle.
In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife, Tenial Hunt Carbone; two sons, Richard of Lakewood, N.J. and Brian at home; three daughters, Susan Arnold of Florida, Patricia Honrath of Red Bank, N.J. and Ashley at home; two brothers, Lester of Red Bank, N.J. and Charles of Colorado; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
The Rev. Tom Willard will officiate at Wednesday's service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Services for Charlotte W. Strausbaugh, 96, of 2345 Cold Spring Road, Orrtanna, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. John Lutheran Church, Fairfield.
She died Saturday, Nov. 1, 1997 in her home.
Born March 27, 1901 in Fairfield, she was a daughter of the late Bryant and Annie Benchoff Wortz and the widow of Dwight L. Strausbaugh, who died in 1957.
Mrs. Strausbaugh and her husband owned and operated Strausbaugh Orchards in Orrtanna for 75 years.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and its Women's Auxiliary. She was a former member of GAR Auxiliary.
She and her husband were married at the Pennsylvania Monument on the Gettysburg Battlefield in 1922.
Surviving are her daughter, Kathleen S. Fitz of Orrtanna; a son, Dwight L. Jr. of Gettysburg; a brother, Ellis R. Wortz of Fayetteville; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The Rev. John K. Burk will officiate at Wednesday's service. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Funeral services for Arthur L. Bigler, 79, of 248 E. Orange St., Shippensburg, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, 112 W. King St., Shippensburg.
He died Saturday, Nov. 1, 1997 in his home.
Born Feb. 10, 1918 in Shippensburg, a son of the late Roy O. and Sarah Ellen Zeigler Bigler, he was a 1936 graduate of Shippensburg High School and for several years had worked at the former Reeder Brothers and Miller-Reed Dairies in Shippensburg.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy and following his discharge was employed at Letterkenny Army Depot.
In 1948, he became the owner and operator of Bigler's Grocery Store on the corner of East Orange and South Washington streets in Shippensburg, where he continued until his retirement in 1984.
Mr. Bigler was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church, AARP and the Minnequa Social Club. He was a lifetime member of Oscar Hykes Post 223 American Legion, Durff-Kuhn Post 6168 VFW, Hub City Social Club and the Cumberland Valley Hose Company, all of Shippensburg, Elks Lodge 600 and Loyal Order of the Moose 842, both of Chambersburg.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, M. Louise Etter Bigler; a son, Robert A. of Marion; two daughters, Cindy L. Hershey and Suzann Rhoades, both of Shippensburg; a sister, Janet Fuller of Shippensburg; four brothers, Leon M., Gordon M., Glenn "Jack" and Jerry A., all of Shippensburg; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Bonnie B. Hoffman will officiate at Wednesday's services. Friends will be received Tuesday from 7 until 9 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Etter-Salem Cemetery, Greene Township, where military graveside services will be conducted by the Shippensburg Veteran's Council.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Lutheran Church, 34 E. Orange St., Shippensburg 17257.
