Mildred A. Myers, 62, of Brownsville, Pa., passed away Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at her home.
Surviving are her husband, Harold J. Myers; children, Jos-eph Myers and wife, Stephanie of Grindstone, James Myers at home, Diane Myers of Browns-ville, Kimberly Myers and husband, Raymond Taylor of Brownsville, Barbara Vance of Searights, Donna Myers and her husband, Dennis Garett of New Salem, and Judy Myers and husband, Tim Vernon of Isabelle; 15 grandchildren; and sisters, Dor-othy Butala of Knox, Ind., Etta Ruth Samol of Penncraft, Carolyn Taylor of New Jersey, Audrey Taylor of Indiana, Lorraine Strolo of New Jersey, Marlene Stuchal of New Jersey, Mary Catherine Obrocta of Cleveland, Ohio, and Janet Meyer of Orange, N.J.
Funeral services will be private for the convenience of the family, and are being handled by the Robert T. Kish Funeral Home Inc., Legion Street, Republic.
Marie Persin
Marie Persin, 88, of Bentleyville, Pa., died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, in Washington Hospital.
Marie was a 1931 graduate of Bentleyville High School.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Gavazzi of Cokeburg, Pa.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Milton Saniga and Erwin Saniga, both of Bentleyville; and two sisters, Estelle Smith of Glencove, N.Y., and Irene Napsha of Pittsburgh.
Friends will be received in the Greenlee Funeral Home, 619 Main St., Bentleyville, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Friday at 10 a.m., the hour of service.
Friar Joseph L. Portasik OFM
Friar Joseph L. Portasik OFM, 77, a member of St. Anthony Friary, Uniontown, Pa., died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, in Uniontown Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
He was born Oct. 21, 1924, in Ford City, Pa., son of the late Frank Portasik and Mary Lalis; and nephew of the late Friar Florian Lalis OFM.
Upon completing his elementary education at Holy Trinity School in Ford City and his high school in Sturtevant, Wis., where he earned his B.A. degree, he entered the Franciscan Order in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Aug. 15, 1942. A year later, he made his simple profession, which was followed three years later by solemn vows
Friar Joseph pursued his college and philosophy studies at St. Francis Seminary, Burlington, Wis., where he earned his B.A. degree. He then completed his theological studies at Our Lady of Lourdes Seminary, Cedar Lake, Ind., and Our Lady of Angels Seminary, Green Bay, Wis. He was ordained by Bishop Stanislaus Bona in St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, Green Bay, Wis., on May 19, 1951. During the 1970’s, he pursued graduate studies at Villanova University, where he was awarded an M.A., in Secondary School Science.
During his five decades as a friar-priest, his ministries were varied. He served as parochial vicar in the Greensburg Diocese, taught at Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown, Ohio, edited the Leaflets of St. Francis, an English edition of the Vice Province or the Most Holy Savior. He became well known as a bi-lingual missionary for retreats and missions in Slovak parishes. He obtained bi-ritual faculties and also served the faithful of the Byzantine rite.
He is a fourth degree Knight of Columbus, and a member of three Slovak Fraternals, i.e., The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, the men’s Jednota, and the Slovak Catholic Sokol. From 1984 to 1987, he served as National Chaplain of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association.
Friar Joseph is survived by two brothers, Friar Richard A. Portasik OFM of Uniontown, Pa., and Dr. John Portasik of Alexandria, Va.; an uncle, Joseph Lalish of Ford City, Pa.; nieces, Lee Ann Woods and husband, James of Burke, Va., Dr. Laura M. Shymansky and husband, Dr. J. Stephen Shymansky, and Linda S. Portasik Esquire of Marietta, Ga.; and three grandnephews and a grandniece.
Friends will be received in the HAKY FUNERAL HOMES INC., A Dignity Memorial Provider, 139 West Fayette St., Uniontown, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The body will be transferred to St. Joseph Church in Uniontown, Pa., on Saturday at 10 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Franciscan plot in North Catholic Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, donations in the name of Friar Joseph may be made to St. Anthony Friary, 115 Oakland Ave., Uniontown, Pa.
The Secular Franciscans will gather on Friday at 3 p.m. The Knights of Columbus will hold services on Friday at 7 p.m. A Wake Service will take place in the evening at 8 p.m.
John D. Rough
John Duane Rough, 78, of Dawson, Pa., died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at 9:50 p.m., in Hempfield Manor, Greensburg, Pa.
He was born Nov. 22, 1922, at Layton, Pa., son of the late Oliver and Marie Forsythe Rough.
Duane was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Marines.
He was a former vice president of the Old Time Fiddlers, and a member of the Irishtown Sportsman Association of Dunbar.
He was also an avid hunter.
Surviving are his wife, Olive M. Little Rough; two sons, David D. Rough and wife, Amanda and daughter, Michaela of Dawson, and Dennis E. Rough and wife, Vicki and son, Nicholas and daughter, Rachel of Greensburg; two daughters, Janet Morris Petrosky and husband, Ron of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Marie Morris Winterhalter and husband, Riney Sr., of Dawson; grandchildren, Riney Winterhalter Jr., and wife, Terri, daughter, Megan and son, Riney of Maryland, Erik Winterhalter and wife, Christine of Virginia, Joni Petrosky D’Ambrosio and husband, John of North Versailles, and Lori Petrosky Egan and husband, Mike of Florida.
Friends will be received in the BLAIR-LOWTHER FUNERAL HOME INC., 106 East Independence St., Perryopolis, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Friday until 1 p.m., the hour of service, with Rich Schimansky officiating, and the Rev. Herbert Peterson co-officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Washington Cemetery, Perryopolis, Pa. Graveside military rites will be accorded by the U.S. Marines.
Martha L. Shiner
Martha Louise (Mattish) Shiner, 80, of Pierpont, Ohio, formerly of Uniontown, Pa., died on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Warren, Ohio.
She was born July 23, 1921, in Trotter, Pa., the daughter of the late John C. and Mary Mattish.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter A. Shiner Sr., on Oct. 7, 1988; and a brother, Frank Mattish.
She was a former member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Uniontown, and many catholic organizations in the area. She was employed at Leece-Neville Company, who manufactured motors.
She is survived by four children, John A. Shiner Jr., and wife, Deborah of Fairview Park,, Ohio, Lorraine Ritchie and husband, Jerome of Sheffield Lake, Ohio, and Allen Shiner and Walter A. Shiner Jr., both of Pierpont, Ohio; and four grandchildren, John and Robert Shiner and Matthew and Michael Ritchie.
Friends will be received at the HAKY FUNERAL HOMES INC., 139 West Fayette St., Uniontown, Pa., A Dignity Memorial Provider, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Friday until 10:30 a.m., when a prayer service will be held, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Uniontown. Interment to follow in St. John Evangelical Cemetery, Brookvale, Pa.
Catherine Allen
Catherine Hagerty Allen, born Dec. 2, 1919, died on Dec. 10, 2001, in Springfield, Mo.
She was the daughter of the late Grove and Mabel Hagerty.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert S. Allen; and a brother, Robert Hagerty.
Catherine Allen is survived by her daughters, JoAnne Witherspoon and Kathy Allen of Springfield, and Judith Allen of Houston, Texas; one brother, Dr. Fred Hagerty and wife, Ann of York, Pa.; and a sister, Dorothy Hagerty of Uniontown.
Catherine was the owner of Allen Filters of Springfield, Mo., and a long-time member of First & Calvary Presbyterian Church.

Leonard E. Ball
Leonard E. Ball, 77, of Beallsville Road, Fredericktown, Pa., died unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at 7:30 p.m., in the emergency room of the Brownsville General Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Florence JoAnn Matz Ball; one son, Leonard E. Ball Jr., of Scranton, Pa.; four daughters, Diane Luku-lich of Denbo, Pa., Marguerite Pacheco and Linda Vasquez, both of Spraggs, Pa., and Barbara Gibson of Lot, France; 15 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Rocky Lynn Matz of Red Hall, Ohio, and Ronald Lee Matz of Ashland, Ohio; one sister, Nora Cetrone of Brick, N.J.; one brother, Paul Ball of Selena, Utah; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received in the Greenlee Funeral Home, Crawford Road at Banks Street, Fredericktown Hill, Fredericktown, Pa., on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Saturday until 1 p.m., the hour of service.

Marvin L. Bittinger, 56, of Bobtown, Pa., died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at home.

Allen D. Blough
Allen D. Blough, 79, of Jefferson, Pa., died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, in Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
He was a retired coal miner from Robena Mine.
Surviving are his wife, Wilma Statler Blough, whom he married on Aug. 26, 1950; a daughter, Kathy Blough-Hann of Princeton, N.J.; a son, Bruce Blough of Lindenhurst, Ill.; three grandchildren; and a brother, Isaac Blough of Suffolk, Va.
Friends will be received in the Behm Funeral Home Inc., 1477 Jefferson Rd., Jefferson, Pa., on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at 11 a.m.
Mattie O. Brady
Mattie Olive Brady, 86, of Lorain, Ohio, and formerly of New Geneva, Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, in the Community Health Partners Hospital in Lorain.
She was born in Terra Alta, W.Va., on May 5, 1915, a daughter of the late Alva and Elvada Wolfe Bolyard.
She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Morgantown.
Surviving are four children, Patricia Savina of Elyria, Ohio, Pamela McDonald of Sandy Lake, Pa., Edward Brady of Norfolk, Va., and Robert Brady of Warren, Ohio; ten grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward L. Brady in 1983; a daughter, Rita Elaine Brady; a brother, Farris Bolyard; and a sister, Lelah Speelman Riggen.
Friends will be received in the RICHARD R. HEROD FUNERAL HOME, Point Marion, on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon, the hour of service, with the Rev. Steve Gocking officiating. Interment follows in Greendale Cemetery, Masontown, Pa.
Sandra L. Cooper
Sandra Lee Cooper, 60, of Connellsville, Pa., passed away Monday, Dec. 10, 2001.
Sandra died in the comfort of her home after a terrible struggle with cancer.
She was born in Connellsville, on May 9, 1941, the daughter of Leroy Cooper and Margaret Bailor Cooper.
Sandy was employed by Anchor Glass as a selector for 42 years and was looking forward to retirement. She was a member of the Wildflowers Herb Club and the DAV Auxiliary, Florida Unit No. 93.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Charles and Hazel Lowry Cooper and William and Hedwiga "Sadie" Matykie-wicz Bailor (Bialkowski); her father, Leroy Cooper, formerly of Dunbar, Pa., in 1990; her mother, Margaret Bailor of Connellsville, in 1984; her stepmother, Evelyn Cooper of Largo, Fla., in November of this year; and her brother, Ronald Cooper of Connellsville, in 1994.
Sandra is survived by her daughter, Angela Cooper of Connellsville and several nephews; and some very special friends, co-workers and neighbors. She will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by us.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the BURHANS-CROUSE FUNERAL HOME, 28 Connellsville St., Dunbar, Pa. In keeping with Sandy’s wishes, there will be no public viewing and interment will be private in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Dunbar.
Instead of flowers, donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or the American Cancer Society. If you wish to do more, do something special for someone you know, in Sandy’s memory.
