James J. Reed
James J. Reed, 70, of Uniontown, Pa., passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2001 in Uniontown Hospital.
He was born August 3, 1930 in Dunbar, Pa., a son of Mary Catherine Miller Reed of Connellsville and the late James B. Reed.
He was a former supervisor of Fayette County Children and Youth Services and recently retired as director of Fayette County Services to Senior Citizens.
He was a member of the Franklin Memorial United Methodist Church in Dunbar, and for the past 14 years, he has been attending the Calvary United Methodist Church of Uniontown where he served as an usher.
He graduated from Connellsville High School in 1948 and Indiana State Teachers College in 1957 with a BS Degree in Business Administration, and West Virginia University with a Master’s Degree in Social Work in 1965.
He served in the United States Navy.
A 50-year member of the American Legion Post 146 of Dunbar, he was also a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 47, Laurel Lodge 651 F&AM, of which he was named ‘Mason of the Year’ in 1988, Uniontown Lodge of Perfection, Pittsburgh Consistory Syria Shrine in Pittsburgh. In 1994, he was one of 17 Scottish Rite Masons in Pennsylvania to receive the "Meritorious Service Award".
He was advisor of Fayette Chapter Order of DeMolay in 1993; named Advisor of the Year in Pennsylvania; received the ‘Guild of The Leather Apron’; and previously he had received the highest honor an adult can receive from the Order of DeMoly, ‘The Honorary Legion of Honor Award’. He was also a member of Uniontown Chapter 263 Order of Eastern Star, BPO Elks 370, and former member and past president of the Uniontown Lions Club where he was named Lion of the Year 1971-’72, and the Uniontown Jaycees.
In 1986, he was honored by the Herald-Standard as one of five to receive the Good Neighbor Award.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary L. Tate Reed; two sons, James W. and wife Tina, and Robert E. and wife Julie of Uniontown; one daughter, Kathy Lynne and husband Dr. Anthony Marano of Lexington, Ky.; seven grandchildren: Robbie, Joshua, Danielle, Ryan, and Kelsey Reed, and Alyssa and Nicholas Marano; and one sister, Anna C. ‘Kitty’ Reed-Strawn and husband George Robert Strawn of Connellsville.
Friends will be received in the JAMES D. BARNETT FUNERAL HOME, 196 West Main St., Uniontown, Pa., today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 9 p.m. and in Calvary United Methodist Church, Clark St., Uniontown on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001 from 10 until 11 a.m., the hour of service with Rev. Thomas Whitehead officiating. Interment, Green Ridge Memorial Park, Connellsville.
Elks 370 service will be held today.
O.E.S. 263 service will be held on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by Laurel Lodge 651 at 7:30 p.m.

Laura B. Santmyer
Laura B. "Sis" Santmyer, 78, of Scottdale, Pa., passed away suddenly, Tuesday afternoon, February 7, 2001 at her residence.
She was once employed at Anchor Hocking Glass in South Connellsville and had worked as a cook for the former Chris’ Restaurant in Scottdale.
Sis is survived by her four daughters: Joyce M. Carnes and husband Albert of Mount Pleasant, Linda F. Bennett and husband Mark of Littleton, Colo., Karen S. Knopsnider and husband Domer of Ruffsdale R.D.2, and Melody L. Overly of Scottdale; her son, Ronald L. Santmyer of Scottdale; 24 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; three sisters: June Grabiak of Scottdale, Marie Cramer of Scottdale, and Betty Lou McIntire of Riverside, Calif; a brother, Rev. Francis Culler of Point Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Robert B. Ferguson Funeral Home, 105 Spring Street, Scottdale today from 7 to 9 p.m.; Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.; and on Saturday at 11 a.m., the hour of service.
Isaiah C. Thomas
Isaiah Charles Thomas, infant son of Barry B. Thomas and Ramona L. Benford Thomas, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2001 in his home.
He was born Feb. 4, 2001 in the Uniontown Hospital.
In addition to his loving parents, Isaiah was survived by the following brothers and sisters: B. Bryan Thomas of Hopwood, Carol L. Thomas, Jon Thomas, Jennifer Thomas, Kenny Thomas, Rachel Thomas, David Thomas, Catherine Thomas, Jaclyn Thomas, and Lillian Thomas; grandparents: Ida L. Thomas, and Dr. and Mrs. Edward Benford, all of Uniontown; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Isaiah was preceded in death by his grandfather, Charles E. Thomas Sr.; uncles: E. Matthew Benford and Daniel R. Thomas.
He was a member of St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church.
Visitation for the family is private.
The family will receive friends on Friday, Feb. 9, 2001 from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church when a Mass of Christian Burial will be held with Rev. Fr. William J. Kiel as celebrant. Interment, Holy Trinity Cemetery, Connellsville.

Margaret Stuck Abel
Margaret P. Stuck Abel, 80, of Perryopolis, Pa., died Saturday, February 26, 2000, at 11 p.m. in Uniontown Hospital.
She was born September 8, 1919, in Perryopolis, Pa., daughter of Nathaniel Stuck and Florence McKee Stuck.
Margaret was a member of Perryopolis United Methodist Church, member and past President of V.F.W. Goldstar Post 7023 Ladies Auxiliary and the Mon-Valley CB Club.
A son, James David Abel, and her parents are deceased.
She is survived by her husband, Russell E. Abel; one son, Larry ``Doug'' Abel and wife, Barbara, of Perryopolis, Pa.; two grandsons: Matthew Abel and Greg Abel both at home; two brothers and two sisters: Dale Stuck and wife, Louise, of Connellsville, Pa., Dean Stuck and wife, Louise, of Sugar Land, Texas, Mrs. Ina Lynn of Lima, Ohio, and Mrs. Bertha Pappas of Connellsville, Pa.

Helen Chuey
Helen Chuey, 87, of Brownsville, Pa., died Saturday, February 26, 2000, in Buchanan Commons, Grove City, Pa.
She was born February 16, 1913, in Royal, Pa., daughter of Michael Chuey and Anna Shefchick Chuey.
Three brothers, Michael, John, and Frank Chuey, three sisters, Mary, Anna, Kathryn, and her parents are deceased.
She is survived by a brother, Joseph Chuey of Monaca, Pa.; sister-in-law, Charlotte Chuey of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received in the SKIRPAN FUNERAL HOME, 135 Park St., Brownsville, Pa., today from 6 to 9 p.m. where a Prayer Service will be held Tuesday, February 29, at 9:30 a.m.
A Funeral Mass follows at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Brownsville.
Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill, Pa.
Helen Jenkins Griffith
Helen Maynard Jenkins Griffith, 70, of Masontown, Pa., passed away Saturday, February 26, 2000, in Uniontown Hospital.
She is survived by three children: Rikki Jenkins of Pittsburgh, Pa., Michele Jenkins of Cape Canaveral, Fla., and Orel Jenkins of Orlando, Fla.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Edith Coffman of McClellandtown, Pa.; brothers: Charles Maynard of Granada Hills, Calif., James Maynard of Cleveland, Ohio, and George Maynard of Parma, Ohio.
Arrangements will be announced by the H. David McElroy Funeral Home, corner of Main and Blaine streets, McClellandtown.
James A. Hayden Sr.
James A. Hayden Sr., 72, of Farmington, Pa., passed away Friday, February 25, 2000, in Uniontown Hospital.
He was born June 30, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pa., son of Floyd B. Hayden Sr. and Anna Brown Hayden.
Mr. Hayden was a member of Farmington Bethel Church of The Brethren.
He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict who served with the United States Navy.
Predeceased by his wife, Clara L. Myers Hayden, a sister, Dorothy Tvardy, and his parents.
Surviving are four sons: James Hayden and wife, Gina, David L. Hayden, Richard Hayden and wife, Katherine, and Harold Hayden and wife, Vicki, all of Farmington; nine grandchildren: Richie Hayden who lived with him, James Hayden III, Michael R. Hayden, Daniel and Heather, Scott A. Hayden, Johnny L. Hayden, Bradley L. Hayden and Christopher Hayden; two great-grandsons: Michael R. Hayden Jr. and Joshua T. Hayden; two brothers both of Markleysburg: Floyd B. Hayden Jr. and wife, Charlotte, and Jack Hayden; and sisters: Nancy Dugger and husband, Melvin, of Dresden, Tennessee, and Patricia Bing and husband, Richard, of Burke, Virginia.
Friends were received Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and will be received in the DONALD R. CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME OF FARMINGTON, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Visitation continues Tuesday, February 29, in Farmington Bethel Church of The Brethren from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Services will begin at 11 a.m. with the Rev. A. Harrison Smith officiating.
Interment follows in the church Cemetery.
Agatha Brown Hynes
Agatha B. (Brennan) Brown Hynes, 92, of Lynnwood, Belle Vernon, Pa., who was born in Midland, Md., died Sunday, February 27, 2000, in Westmoreland Manor.
She is survived by her son, Clair Brown and his wife, Mildred, of Lynnwood, Belle Vernon; two grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Anna Drotos Kurtz
Anna Kallis Drotos Kurtz, 82, of Marianna, Pa., died Saturday, February 26, 2000, at 3:50 p.m. in the home of her daughter, Alice Wardman, of Low Hill, Brownsville.
She was born July 2, 1917, in Vestaburg, Pa., daughter of Pete Kallis and Mary Gertez Kallis Bubnar.
She was a member of The Parish of St. Oliver Plunkett and a retired cafeteria worker from Beth-Center School District.
Her first husband, John Drotos, died in October 1967. Her second husband, Donald Kurtz, died in April 1991. Her parents are also deceased.
She is survived by two daughters, Alice Drotos Wardman and her husband, John Wardman, of Low Hill, Brownsville, Pa., and Janet Drotos Kinder of Edison, New Jersey; four grandchildren: David Wardman and his wife, Pam, of Vestaburg, Jeanette Acevedo and her husband, Bill, of West Keansburg, New Jersey, Jeffrey Kinder and his wife, Donna, of Piscataway, New Jersey, and Tammy Scrip and her husband, John, of Elco, Pa.; one great-grandson, Adam Wardman of Vestaburg; one sister, Emily Kallis Stotka of Low Hill, Brownsville; one brother, Thomas Kallis of Seville, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received in the GREENLEE FUNERAL HOME, Fredericktown Hill, 42 Bank St., Fredericktown, Pa., today from 2 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, February 29, until 10:30 a.m. when a Blessing Service will be held.
A Mass of Christian Burial follows at 11 a.m. in The Parish of St. Oliver Plunkett, St. Michael Archangel Church, Fredericktown, Pa., with Rev. Fr. Edward S. Litavec as Celebrant.
Interment will follow in Fredericktown Cemetery.
