Joseph M. Sofranko
Joseph M. Sofranko, 85, of Uniontown, Pa. died Wednesday, February 23, 2000 in the Uniontown Hospital.
He was born Jan. 2, 1915 in Star Junction, Pa., son of the late Jacob and Anna (Jankura) Sofranko.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Richard Sofranko; sisters, Ann Sofranko and Mary Rathway; and a brother-in-law, Vincent Crofcheck.
Mr. Sofranko was a member of St. Marys (Nativity) Roman Catholic Church.
He retired as Chief Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force after 25 years of service, active and reserve. He served during World War II in French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily and England. He was captured June 7, 1944 after being shot down on re-supply to the 82nd Airborne and crash landed over St. Mere Eglese. His legs were injured and he was separated from the rest of his crew. He remained a prisoner of war until May 1, 1945 when he was liberated by the Russians. He was awarded three Air Medals, The Purple Heart and four Campaign Stars. On Memorial Day, 1996, the Hopwood Post Office presented him a plaque to commemorate the new Pow/Mia stamp.
Additionally, he retired in 1971 from the Uniontown Post Office as a letter carrier after 30 years of service and was issued a Certificate of Award from the Post Office Department.
He was a member of V.F.W. Post 47, Amvets Post 103, Catholic War Veterans Post 1669, The Uniontown Amateur Radio Club, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Ann Dennis Sofranko; son, William H. David and wife Phyllis of Uniontown; two grandchildren: Michele David of Masontown and Joseph David of Uniontown; one brother and two sisters: John Sofranko and wife Marjorie of Akron, Ohio, Margaret Crofcheck of Uniontown and Helen Emricko and husband John of Perryopolis. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Joseph Rathway of Perryopolis; sister-in-law, Cecelia Sofranko of Uniontown; and many special nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received in THE HAKY FUNERAL HOMES INC, 139 West Fayette St., Uniontown on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 27, 2000 until 10:30 a.m. when a Blessing Service will be held followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Mary Nativity R.C. Church.
Internment will follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by Amvets Post 103.
Parish Wake Service, 8 p.m. Friday.
Catholic War Veterans Post 1669 will conduct services.
The Catholic War Veterans will conduct services Friday at 7 p.m.

Carol S. Springer
Carol Spragg Springer, 81, of Waynesburg, Pa. died Wednesday, February 23, 2000 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, w.Va.
She worked as a substitute teacher in Wilmington, Del. and for 16 years at the Lobby Shop at Green County Memorial Hospital.
Surviving are her husband R.B. "Buck" Springer; two sons, James B. Springer and his wife Lenora of Honolulu, Hawaii and Carl M. Springer and his wife Sripapa of Bangkok, Thailand; and two grandchildren, Bryan Li Springer and Karolin Springer.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at the Behm Funeral Home Inc. 182 W. High St., Waynesburg and on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000 at 1:45, the hour of service.

Charles S. Storey
Charles S. Storey, 85, of Scottdale, Pa., passed away Tuesday evening, Feb. 22, 2000 in Harmon House Convalescent Center, Mount Pleasant.
Charles retired as Assistant Post Master with the Scottdale Post Office on July 1, 1972 after 31 years of service with the US Postal Service.
Surviving are a son, Charles H. Storey and his wife Diane of Westport, Conn.; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Family and friends will be received at the Robert B. Ferguson Funeral Home, 105 Spring St., Scottdale today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 1 to 2 p.m., the hour of service.

Clara B. Tressler
Clara B. Tressler, 73, of Lemont Furnace, Pa., formerly of Dunbar R.D.2, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000 in Highlands Hospital, Connellsville.
She was born May 2, 1926 in Dunbar, Pa., a daughter of the late Benjamin and Clara Hite Jolliffe.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lester C. Tressler in 1993; one daughter, Charlene Tressler; one sister, Evelyn Garletts; and one brother, Raymond Jolliffe.
Mrs. Tressler was formerly employed at Pechins in Dunbar for several years.
She is survived by one son, Curtis L. Tressler and his wife Sheila of Boswell; three daughters, Darlene J. Landman and her husband Wendell R. Sr. of Lemont Furnace, Marlene Cole and her husband John of Mill Run and Arlene Leonard and her husband George of Dunbar; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and one brother, Donald Jolliffe and his wife Josephine of Dunbar.
Graveside Committal Services wil be held on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. in the Franklin Cemetery, Dunbar with Rev. Fred Booher officiating.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Community Bible Church with Rev. Booher officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Community Bible Church in memory of Mrs. Tressler.
All arrangements are under the direction of the BROOKS FUNERAL HOME INC., 111 E. Green Street, Connellsville.

Ethel L. Weller
Ethel L. Sybert Weller, 85, of Uniontown, Pa., passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2000 in Uniontown Hospital.
She was born Sept. 13, 1914 in Acosta, Pa., daughter of the late Ulysses G. and Emma Tuttle Sybert.
She was a member of the Great Bethel Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class.
A graduate of Uniontown High School, she was a floor walker for G.C. Murphy Company for 42 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert E. Weller; two brothers: James O. and Clarence A. Sybert; and a sister, Margaret J. Myers on March 10, 1989.
She is survived by a son, Albert E. Weller of Laporte, Texas; a niece, Mrs. John W. (Sharon) Skovira of Uniontown; nieces and nephews: Dan and Eric Skovira of Uniontown, Michael W. Porterfield and Cherie A. Watkins of Texas.
Friends will be received in the JAMES D. BARNETT FUNERAL HOME, 196 West Main St., Uniontown, Pa. today from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000 until 11 a.m., the hour of service with Rev. Michael Hall officiating.
Interment in Sylvan Heights Cemetery.

Adelaide L. Wolfe
Adelaide L. McCartney Wolfe, 88, of Ohiopyle, Pa., went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on Monday, February 21, 2000, from the Uniontown Hospital.
She was born January 15, 1912, in Farmington, Pa., to Albert McCartney and Lauretta Kunkle McCartney.
Adeline was a very active member of the Ohiopyle United Methodist Church since September 2, 1927, where she served in various offices including treasurer, the position she held until January of 2000. She was a member of the Mountain Citizens Action Group and the Ohiopyle Grange 133. Her beloved husband, David A. Wolfe, died in 1961. Also deceased are her parents and two brothers, Robert "Bob" McCartney and James "Jim" McCartney.
Surviving are three brothers: Albert "Wayne" McCartney and wife, Arlene, of Lakeland, Florida, Walter McCartney of Hudson, Ohio, J. Sturgean "Doc" McCartney and wife, Betty, of Richmond Heights, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received in the DONALD R. CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME OF FARMINGTON, Pa., on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Visitation continues Saturday, February 26, in Ohiopyle United Methodist Church from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., the hour of the service with the Rev. Thomas Bonomo, her Pastor, officiating.
Interment will follow in Sansom Chapel Cemetery, Farmington.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Ohiopyle United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 124, Ohiopyle, PA 15470.

Mabel E. Blackstone
Mabel E. Blackstone, 87, of Connellsville died Wednesday in LaFayette Manor Personal Care Home, Uniontown.
She is survived by a son, Robert E. Blackstone of Youngstown, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Carolyn E.) Miller of Connellsville and Shirley A. Welling of Connellsville; one brother, Walter Shallenberger of Connellsville; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Vito C. Martucci Funeral Home, 123 S. First St., West Side, Connellsville today from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 pm. and Saturday until 11 a.m.

Francis Andrew Chuey
Francis Andrew Chuey, 71, of Uniontown, Pa., died Monday, February 28, 2000 in the VA Medical Center, Aspinwall, Pa.
He was born Sept. 8, 1928 in Uledi, Pa., son of the late Michael P. and Anna C. (Baran) Chuey Sr.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters: Steve, John, Andrew and Michael Chuey Jr., and Mary Mouser and Anna Manyak.
Francis was a member of St. Mary (Nativity) Roman Catholic Church, was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean war, and was a printer for magazine publications.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy A. (Solly) Chuey; two sons, Robert Chuey of Lansing, Mich., David Chuey and wife Patricia of Brunswick, Md.; and three sisters, Margaret Kuchno of Baily Crossroads, Va., Josephine Hawkins of Manassas, Va. and Matilda Mack of Arlington, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Private visitation was held for the family Thursday in THE HAKY FUNERAL HOMES INC, 139 W. Fayette Street, Uniontown.
The family will receive friends today until 10:30 a.m. when a Prayer Service will be held followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Therese R.C. Church.
Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery where military honors will be accorded.
