Gilbert Begay
Services for Gilbert Begay, 39, were held on Friday, January 16, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the Whitecone United Methodist Church, Whitecone, AZ, with Pastor Guy B. Nez Jr., ofÞciating. Interment was at the family plot in White Cone, AZ.
Gilbert was born in Shiprock, NM on April 22,1964. He passed away on January 11, 2004 in Polacca, AZ. He is survived by his wife, Karen Joy Nez; sons, Roman Begay, Romon Begay, Romondo Begay and Rolando Begay; mother, Pauline Tso Begay; siblings, Thomas Begay Sr., Daisy Nez, Anita Nez, Dale Begay, Wayne Begay and Raymond Begay; many uncles, aunts, cousins, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
Arrangements under the care of Greer’s Mortuary of Winslow.

Josephine C. Brehm
Josephine C. Brehm, 88, died Wednesday, January 14 at her home in Winslow. Josephine moved to Winslow in 1946 with her husband, Paul Sr. for reasons of his health. She served as a secretary for attorney, John Clark and also served as a secretary for the court system doing shorthand court reporting.
Josephine was preceded in death by her husband who died in 1977. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Tina Brehm, of Mobile, Alabama; two granddaughters and their husbands, Julia and Robert Lacy, of Houston, Texas, and Laura and Carl Thomas of Stillwater, Oklahoma; one great grandson, Cameron Meyer, also of Stillwater; and a special friend and caregiver, Irene Archibeque.
A service of remembrance will take, place in the chapel at the Norvel Owens Mortuary, 1505 W. Third St., Winslow, Arizona on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. with burial to follow at Desert View Cemetery in Winslow.
Arrangements are under the direction of Norvel Owens Mortuary.

James C. Burrage
Funeral Services for James C. Burrage, 72, were held Saturday, January 24, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the Winslow Elks Lodge #536 located at 315 W. Third St., Winslow, AZ. A visitation will be held Friday, January 23, 2004 from 5-7 p.m. at Greer’s Mortuary Chapel located at 316 W. Second St., Winslow. Graveside services and interment will take place at Williams Community Cemetery on Saturday, January 24, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. in Williams, AZ.
James was born on August 19, 1931 in McNary, AZ to Douglas Hammett and Thelma Lee Burrage. He passed away surrounded by his loving family on January 18, 2004 in Albuquerque, NM from complications of surgery. He loved playing his guitars, ranching and being around lots of family and friends. He was a Korean War Veteran and worked for many years for the A.T. & S.F. Railroad before his retirement.
He is survived by his children, Patricia (Robert) Kent of Winslow, Linda (David “Deke”) Moore of Corrales, NM, Sandra Burrage of Rio Rancho, NM, James (Antoinette) Burrage of Winslow, and Robert (Sheryl) Burrage of Gilbert; brothers, O.L. “Buster” (Louise) Burrage, Charles Burrage, and Cecil (Donna) Burrage; sisters, Joyce Sullivant and Alice (Danny) Schnell; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and his former wife of 33 years, Darlene. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Douglas and Geether; and his sister, Francis White.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to your favorite charity.

Edna Irene Howeth
Funeral Services for Edna Irene Howeth, 82, of Winslow, were held Friday, January 23, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the Willcox First United Methodist Church located at 124 S. Curtis Ave., Willcox, AZ. Interment will be held at the Sunset Cemetery in Willcox.
Edna was born on December 28, 1921 in Sylvester, TX. She passed away on January 18, 2004 in Scottsdale, AZ. She married Mark Howeth in Silver City, NM on December 5, 1946. They eventually moved to Willcox, AZ where their children attended school. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and country music. She also enjoyed playing the organ and guitar. Her hobbies included crocheting, bead work and sewing. Edna loved family reunions and was an avid fan of “Fan Fair.” She was a devoted wife, loving mother and a fun, loving granny.
She is survived by two sons, Glenn (Yvonne) Howeth of Winslow and Bob (Becky) Howeth of Orlando, FL; a sister, Opal Floyd of Graham, TX; a brother-in-law, Lindsey Cohorn of Wilcox; four grandchildren: Travis, Amy, Tenniel and Wesley; Þve great-grandchildren: Mary, Mike, Melissa, James Marc and Alyssa; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Howeth (March 29, 1985); parents Abner and Audrie Cook; sisters, Sib Mauldin, Hester Walker, Breece Carter, Willie Pearl Cohorn, Frankie Hayes, Viola Fox, Eula Bradshaw and Sis Walker; brothers, Henry Cook, Grady Cook and Edgar Cook.
In lieu of cards and flowers, please send a donation in Irene Howeth’s name to the Southern Arizona Alzheimer’s Region, 5132 E. Pima St., Tucson, AZ 85712.

Mary “Jean” Kanuho Hardy
Funeral Services for Mary “Jean” Kanuho Hardy, 70, were held on Thursday, January 22, 2004 at 10:00 at Maranatha Assembly of God located at the corner of Alfred & Fleming in Winslow, with Pastor Johnny Nells officiating. Interment was at Desert View Cemetery in Winslow, AZ.
Mary was born at Elephant Butte, AZ on May 21, 1933 to Bertha Totsonie and Marcus Kanuho. She passed away on January 18, 2004 in Winslow, AZ. She is of the Salt people clan and born for Manygoats people clan. Maternal grandparents are Big Water people clan and paternal grandparents are Bitterwater people clan. She was a homemaker and a rug weaver. She took great joy in raising her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 55 Years, Kee Hardy Sr., of Dilkon; sons, Raymond (Rosemary) Kee of Flagstaff and Larry of Dilkon, Anthony (Lavon) of Flagstaff, Kee Jr. (Bernice) of Dilkon; daughters, Eileen of Leupp, Marilyn (Lorenzo) Lee of Nixon, NV. and Lucille (Randy) Jones of Leupp; 17 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Wilfred Joe Hardy, and grandparents, Pete and Chinpa Totsonie.
Arrangements were under the care of Greer’s Mortuary of Winslow.

Marie S. Schibi
Holy Rosary for Marie Sophie Schibi, 79, was recited Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today, Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Dan Hussey, celebrant. Interment will be in Desert View Cemetery.
Marie was born on Aug. 28, 1924 in Mount Healthy, Ohio, to parents Eugene and Carrie L. Krogman Sterwerf. She moved to Winslow in 1951. She managed the Sprouse-Reitz in Winslow and in Springerville. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.
She is survived by her son, Bill (Barbara) Schibi of Flagstaff; daughters, Marie (Frank) Gose of Winslow, Sandra (Vaughn) Nelson of Oregon, Debra Markovich of Oregon, Cheryl (Bernie) Lopez of Winslow, Karen Tolley of Indiana, and Brenda Juarez of Winslow; brother, William Sterwerf of Ohio; sister, Betty Dudley of Ohio; 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Schibi; her parents; her son, James Schibi; and brother, Eugene Sterwerf.
Arrangements were under the care of Greer’s Mortuary of Winslow.

Joe N. Smith Sr.
Holy Rosary for Joe N. Smith Sr., 75, was recited on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at Madre de Dios Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 at Madre de Dios Catholic Church with Father Dan Hussey, celebrant. Interment was in Desert View Cemetery.
Joe Narciso Smith was born on Dec. 28, 1928 in Concho to parents Narciso and Virginia Barreras Smith. He passed away on Jan. 22, 2004 at the V.A. Medical Center in Prescott. Joe was a veteran, serving our country during WWII in the U.S. Army.
In his early working career, he worked as a ranch hand for many of the area’s ranches. He went on to work for the Santa Fe Railroad. Then he worked as a dog catcher, working his way up to be employed by the Winslow Police Department until his retirement. He was active in Little League and during elections, he helped out at the polling places. He was a member of Madre de Dios Catholic Church, the V.F.W., and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia D. Smith; sons, Robert Smith, Joe Smith Jr., Milton Smith, Herman Smith and Tommy Smith; daughter, Alice Smith; brothers, Vero Smith, Henry “Smitty” Smith and Sammy Smith; sisters, Bessie Williams, Tillie Anaya, Virginia Ruby and Lucy Ono; numerous grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Max Smith.
Arrangements were under the care of Greer’s Mortuary of Winslow.

Madelon Easley Tackett
Madelon Easley Tackett died Sept. 29, 2003 in Fresno, Calif. She was born in Winslow on Nov. 23, 1906 and was the daughter of Buena Easley.
Madelon and her husband, R.B. “Tack” Tackett, moved to Bakersfield, Calif., in the late 1950s.
Madelon is survived by her daughters, Patti Duncan of Fresno and Madelon Blumlein of Concho; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tack; son, Rodger; and mother, Buena.
Memorial services were held in Fresno at St. Columbas Episcopal Church on Oct. 4, 2003. Her ashes will be interred in Winslow at a later date.
