Funeral Services for Alberta D. James, 86, of Dilkon, were held on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Maranatha Assembly of God, located on the comer of Fleming and Alfred in Winslow. Interment was at Desert View Cemetery in Winslow.
Alberta was born Dec. 15, 1917 in Castle Butte. She passed away on Jan. 21, 2004 in Flagstaff. Alberta enjoyed weaving, sewing and other crafts. She loved to play solitaire on the computer. From 1968-1984, she was employed by the B.I.A. at the Dilkon school as a custodian until her retirement.
Her survivors include husband, Tom James of St. Michaels; sons, Benny Long, Scott Long and Henry Long, all of Dilkon, and Wilson Long of Castle Butte; daughters, Molly Begay, Patricia Tom and Julia James, all of Dilkon, and Mary Tabaha of Ft. Defiance; a stepson, Freddy James of Montezuma Creek, Utah; stepdaughters, Shirley Brown of Dilkon and Bernice Holly of Montezuma Creek, Utah; a brother, Dale Dixon Sr. of Dilkon; sisters, Eleanora Barton and Stella Chase, both of Dilkon; 41 grandchildren and many, many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughter, Bertha Gourneau; sisters, Mary D. Begay and Ellen Williams; and grandson, Marvin Begay.
Arrangements were under the care of Greer s Mortuary of Winslow.
Holy Rosary for Mary Louise (Schmitz) Freeby was recited on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 at Greer's Mortuary Chapel, located at 316 W. Second St., Winslow. Mass of a Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father Dan Hussey, celebrant.
A viewing was held prior to the Rosary on Tuesday at Greer's Mortuary Chapel. Interment was at Desert View Cemetery.
Mary Louise (Schmitz) Freeby, a native of Winslow, passed away on Jan. 24, 2004 at Winslow Memorial Hospital. She was 82 years old. Born on March 3, 1921 to parents Leon and Clara Schmitz, her greatest achievements were her marriage to Alvin Guy (Jim) Freeby on Oct. 9, 1938 and parenting her four children.
When her children were no longer at home, she worked as a surgical technician. She joined her husband in retirement and together they enjoyed spending time with each other, traveling, visiting with their extended family, and hunting for and restoring antiques and collectibles. Mary took great pride in the knowledge of antiques and their value, which she gained through her many years of interest and became quite an expert in the area.
She is survived by her son, Jim (Maryann) Freeby of Sigurd, Utah; daughter, Mary (Jim) Beres of Gardnerville, Nevada; her beloved niece, Pat (Tom) Fisher of Albuquerque, NM; brother, Gene (Donna) Schmitz of Winslow; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews (and their families) and beloved friends. Her family will miss her greatly and will say that as one is judged in the evening of their life by the love they have shown to their family and others, may she be found blessed in God's Kingdom.
Arrangements were under the care of Greer s Mortuary of Winslow.
Funeral Services for Herman Smith, 85, of Dinnebito were held Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004 at the Hardrock Gosple Mission, Hardrock. Interment was at Hardrock Cemetery.
Herman Smith was born on June 9, 1918 in Hardrock to parents, Bizaadi Sani and Thia Dughi. He passed away in Phoenix on Jan. 22, 2004.
During his working career, he was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad as a Laborer. He is survived by his daughters, Ella Mae Smith of Rocky Ridge, Dorothy Bain of Holbrook, Samantha Redhair of Rocky Ridge and Verdy Yazzie of Flagstaff; sons, Ernest Smith of Rocky Ridge, Raylee Begay of Phoenix, Benjamin Smith of Tuba City, Jeffery Smith of Rocky Ridge and Ervin Smith of Rocky Ridge; 63 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were under the care of Greer s Mortuary of Winslow.
Dora Thelma Neill, 90, of Scottsdale, passed away Jan. 28, 2004. She was born in Adams County, Ohio, where she attended school and met her husband of 47 years, Robert S. Neill.
There they raised their two sons, James Robert, who preceded her in death, and William R., who currently resides in Anaheim Hills, Calif.
In 1963, the family moved to Flagstaff, then to Kingman, Snowflake and Winslow, where she and her late husband operated their Circle K stores.
Thelma is also survived by her sisters, Wilma Johnson and Ann Rudd; brothers, Burton James and Ernest (Junior) McFarland; her grandchildren, Rob, Beth, Amy, Carey and Ryan; many great and great, great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be held Feb. 21, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Whitney & Murphy Arcadia Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix.

God took back one of his littlest angels, Christopher Izarius White. This little angel was born on Dec. 11, 2003 to Christopher White and Veronica Flanagan. He was called to heaven on Feb. 2, 2004.
Despite the fact that he was only here with us for a very short period of time, his memory will live on in our hearts forever. Christopher will now be a guardian angel looking down on his older brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his mother and father; brothers, Izrael, Donell, Seandell, Devon, Trevon and Victor; sisters, Tonia and Vonaisha; devoted grandmother, Nora Mesa (White); his aunties, uncles and cousins.
Mass of Angels was held on Friday, Feb. 6, 2004 at the Zion Baptist Church, Winslow. Interment was at Desert View Cemetery.
Arrangements were under the care of Greer s Scott Mortuary.
Margaret Joanne Real, 84, of Farmington, N.M. passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004 in Farmington, She was born March 5, 1919 in Indianapolis, Ind. to E.E. Stidham and Margaret Coffman Stidham.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lewis Louie Anthony Real, and two sisters.
She is survived by a son, Richard A., and wife, Marilyn Real of Yuma; a daughter, Annette, and husband, Ed Goodwin of Kirtland, N.M.; a brother, Jack Stidham; a sister, Pat Lehner; sister-in-law, Sue Real; two grandchildren, Robert and Mark Goodwin; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Friday, Feb. 6 at Little Sacred Heart Church, Waterflow, N.M. Rosary was recited at the church following the visitation. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Little Sacred Heart with Father Patrick Wedeking and Monsignor Lindenmeyer, co-celebrants. Interment was held Monday, Feb. 9 at Desert View Cemetery, Winslow.

Honorary Pallbearers were Ed Goodwin, her son-in-law; Robert Goodwin, her grandson; Mark Goodwin, her grandson; Rick Real, her son; Lew Real and her great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute Street, Farmington, N.M.
Funeral services for Daniel Danny Robert Nelson, 47, of Winslow were held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Viewing was held on Friday, Feb. 6, 2004 at Greer s Mortuary Chapel. Interment was in Desert View Cemetery.
Danny was born on May 11, 1956 in Winslow to parents, George and Meredith (Sawyer) Nelson. He lived his whole life in Winslow. He played in Little League baseball and attended Winslow Public Schools. He graduated from Winslow High School in 1976.
He had been employed by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad and what is now known as the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for 26 years.
Before going to work for the railroad, he worked for his uncle, Dale Hancock, with Hancock Construction.
He did a lot of volunteer work, helping out with Bingo at the Odd Fellows Hall on Friday nights and with AYSO Soccer program when his children were playing.
He liked to bowl and golf. He was an avid hunter and loved hunting and camping.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah (Parish) Nelson; son, Christopher Nelson; daughters, Crystal and Rachelle Nelson; parents, George and Meredith Nelson; brothers, Alvin Nelson of San Diego, Calif., Steve Nelson of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; a sister, Bernie Duran of Mesa; one granddaughter, Rebekah; 15 nephews and nieces, and lots of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Arrangements were under the care of Greer s Mortuary of Winslow.
Richard D. Shreeve, 74, of Alpharetta, Ga, son of Leo and Gladys (Hayes) Shreeve, died peacefully in his home Feb. 2.
He is survived by Shirley, his wife of 38 years; son, David, and daughter-in-law, Alissa, and baby granddaughter Elaina all of Lawrenceville, Ga.
He also leaves behind a host of family members and friends.
A memorial service will be held at Timothy Lutheran Church in Woodstock, Ga.
