John Trego, Jr., 70, of 217 West Main Street, Leola, Lancaster County, died Wednesday morning at 7:05 AM in Hamilton Arms Nursing Home, Lancaster, where he resided for 2 weeks. His death followed a brief illness. Born in Hinkletown, Lancaster County, he was a son of the late John H. and Florence E. (Griffith) Trego. Retiring in 1996, he was employed for 41 years by Pennsylvania Scale Co., Leola. Since retirement he had worked part-time for Garden Spot Auto Auction, Ephrata; and for Car Quest, Leola. He was a member of Ephrata Lodge #1933 B.P.O.E. (Elks). A member of the United Racing Club, he was a mechanic assisting Kenny Brightbill with his modified stock car racing at the Reading Fairgrounds and also assisted in Sprint car racing with Billy Brian Jr. and Cliff Brian. Surviving is a daughter, Sandra L. (Trego) Johns, and a son, John A. Trego, both of Ephrata, PA; 3 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Hilda (Trego) Doll and a brother, Richard Trego.
A viewing will be held on Monday, May 31, 2004, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM from our parlors. The funeral ceremony celebrating John's life will be held on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at 10:00 AM with The Reverend Dennis E. Spangler officiating. Burial will follow in Voganville Cemetery, Earl Township, Lancaster County, PA.

Roy L. Zander
Feb. 12, 1923 - July 11, 2001
Roy L. Zander, 78, of 188 Black Horse Road, Adamstown, Lancaster County, died Wednesday morning at 10:02 AM in the Ephrata Community Hospital where he was a patient for four days. Born in Lancaster, he was a son of the late Elam E. and Mabel M. (Steinman) Zander, and was the husband of Ethel (Rice) Zander. A navy veteran of World War II he was a life member and past trustee of the Adamstown VFW, a life member of the Lititz American Legion and a member of the Navy Club of Lebanon. He was the owner and operator of Zander’s Garage, Adamstown, for the past 52 years. Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Chris Zander, Adamstown; 2 sons, Edward F., marriage to Laure E. (Fink) Zander, Adamstown; and Frederic A., marriage to Susan L. (Bath) Zander, Lincoln, Nebraska; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; and 2 sisters, Pauline M. Risser, Ephrata, PA; and Zelma D. Shelly, Brickerville, PA. A brother, Harold S. Zander, preceded him in death.

Funeral ceremonies will be held on Monday, July 16, 2001, at 4:00 PM from Swamp Evangelical Lutheran Church, 275 Swamp Church Road, Reinholds, PA, with The Reverend Dennis L. Trout officiating. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.

Helen L. "Sissie" Zerbe
October 8, 1917 - April 21, 2004
Helen L. “Sissie” Zerbe, 86, of 2499 Zerbe Road, Narvon, Lancaster County, died Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 PM in Lancaster General Hospital where she was admitted following a fall in her residence on Tuesday afternoon. Born in Bowmansville, Lancaster County, she was a daughter of the late Theodore F. and Mary Ann (Wise) Zerbe. “Sissie” was an active member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Bowmansville, where she was the first woman on church consistory, a former elder, choir member and on the women’s guild. She was a co-founder, owner and president of Zerbe Sisters Nursing Center, Homestead Assisted Living and Woodland Heights Retirement Community, Narvon, which she and her sisters, Ann (Zerbe) Good, with whom she resided, Ann’s late husband, Omar “Curly” Good, and the late Dorothy “Judy” Zerbe, began at their former home in 1958 as Good’s Convalescent Home. She also served as Nursing Home Administrator from 1961-1998. The Home was renamed in 1960 after moving into the former estate of Dr. Walter Rigg in Caernarvon Township. She also co-owned the former Triple Z Hosiery Mill in Bowmansville in the 1940’s. The mistress of ceremonies and violinist in the family musical group, “Zerbe Sisters, Curly and Little Nancy Ann”, they were a feature show on local radio stations, Reading’s WEEU and Lancaster’s WLAN, for 13 years during the 40’s and 50’s. They had been on the NBC Today Show and the former Arlene Frances Show. The group also operated Shupp’s Grove as an early entertainment center in northern Lancaster County. They operated food concessions and entertained for many years at the Reading Fair, and ran food stands at the annual New Holland, Ephrata and Allentown Fairs. A graduate of the former Hoyt’s School of Nursing, Lancaster, and the licensed practical nursing program at Willow Street Vocational Technical School, Lancaster County, she earned an associate science degree from Elizabethtown College in 1981. Also surviving is another sister, Catherine E. Kring, Narvon; a niece and a nephew.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2004, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM from our parlors and also at the church Monday, April 26, 2004, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM.
The service celebrating "Sissie's" life will begin at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 26, 2004, with The Reverend Robert A. Witmyer, her pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow in Bowmansville Union Cemetery, Brecknock Township, Lancaster County, PA.
Fern Zieber
December 30, 1927 - July 21, 2003
Fern T. Zieber, 75, formerly of Adamstown, Lancaster County, died Monday morning at 10:20 AM in Zerbe Sisters Nursing Center, Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County, where she resided since March 2002. Born in Grill, Berks County, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Mamie (Remp) Trostle. She and her husband, Lew A. Zieber, Adamstown, celebrated 26 years of marriage on July 20th. Mrs. Zieber had been employed for 20 years by Arrow Industries, Wyomissing, PA. She was a member of the Reinholds VFW Ladies Auxillary and enjoyed deep sea fishing. Surviving in addition to her husband are2 sons, Sheron L., marriage to Karen (Schwartz) Schaefer, Womelsdorf, PA; and Randall P., marriage to Tina (Latshaw) Schaefer, Denver, PA; 3 daughters, Diane R., marriage to William L. Ressler, and Kay L., marriage to Scott H. Ressler, both of Robesonia; and Pamela J., marriage to Lester Strunk, Richland, PA; 9 granchildren and a great-grandson; Also, 4 step-daughters, Linda (Zieber) Goodman, address unknown; Sandy (Zieber) Moyer, Sinking Spring, PA; Lori Zieber, South Bend, IN; and Lynn Zieber, Sinking Spring, PA; and 6 step-grandchildren. A sister, Ida, marriage to Peter Klaasen, Mohnton, PA, and a brother, Harold, marriage to Marion Trostle, Sinking Spring, PA, also survive. She was preceded in death by a son Thomas Schaefer.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday morning, July 24, 2003, at 10:00 AM from Wyomissing Cemetery, Gouglersville, Berks County, PA.
Richard G. Zilling
October 27, 1929 - November 5, 2004
Richard G. Zilling, 75, 22 Flamingo Drive, Stony Run Village, Denver, Lancaster County, formerly of West Chester, died Friday evening at 11 PM in Ephrata Community Hospital. Born in Upper Darby, he was a son of the late Guenther and Elise Zilling. His wife, Audrey M. (Ridgely) Zilling, died in 1999. A graduate of Dickinson College, Carlisle, he retired from the land development department of Sun Oil Company, Philadelphia, where he was employed for over 30 years. Surviving are 2 daughters, Kathryn (Zilling), wife of Andrew Seidel, Ardmore, PA ; and Susan (Zilling) McKim, Allentown, PA ; a son, James, husband of Patricia (Ruggeri) Zilling, Denver, PA ; and 3 grandsons.

Merla L. Eshleman
1932-2001
Born in East Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, PA, she was a daughter of the late Phares K. "Pit" Steffy and the late Mary E. (Stricker) Steffy, who died April 9th of this year. Merla was a member of Akron Church of the Brethren. She was an avid gardner, great cook and enjoyed sewing. She was employed many years ago at the former Cinderella Knitting Mill, Denver, Walter W. Moyer, Inc., Ephrata, and retired in June 1983 after 26 years with the former C & B Trimming, Reamstown. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Kenneth Eshleman; a son, Kenneth L., marriage to Deborah M. (Jones) Eshleman, Stevens, PA; a daughter, Vivian A., marriage to David K. Kopp, Reinholds, PA; 5 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Also 2 sisters, Rosalie Crawford, Stevens, PA; and Nancy, marriage to Lamar Seifrit, Denver, PA; and 4 brothers, John, marriage to Alberta (DeLong) Steffy, and Thomas, marriage to Bonnie (Althouse) Steffy, both of Reamstown, PA; and Richard, marriage to Cathy (Hartranft) Steffy, and Terry, marriage to Susan (Summers) Steffy, both of Stevens, PA; A brother, Clarence "Mike" Steffy died in
1999. Merla and Kenneth lived at 1261 Red Run Road, Stevens, where she was stricken ill unexpectedly Friday evening. She died Tuesday afternoon at 4:34 PM in the Ephrata Community Hospital.
It was Merla's wish that her services be held privately by her family from our parlor. Burial will be in Middle Creek Brethren Cemetery, Ephrata Township. Alverta L. Franck
1935 - 2001
Alverta was born in East Cocalico Township, Lanca ster County, PA, a daughter of the late Howard and Grace V. (Berg) Brubaker. She cleaned for several local businesses and in dividuals until the time of
her illness and was a member of the Reamstown Athletic Association. Alverta loved playing the piano and organ and enjoyed dancing. She is survived by 2 daughters, Tracey L., of Lebanon; and Holly J., of Denver; 2 sons, Brian R., marriage to Sue (Gerhart) Franck, Denver; and Dale C. Frank, Ephrata; 4 grandchild ren; a great-granddaughter; a sister, Betty J. Rishel, Denver; and 2 brothers, Lavern, marriage to Rose Brubaker, Ephrata; and Vernon
Brubaker, Florida. A brother, Larry Berg, preceded her in death. She died Tuesday in the Ephrata Community Hospital where she was a patient since April 13th. Alverta lived at 99 Monroe Street, Denver, PA 17517.
Services from our parlor on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at 10:00 AM, Pastor Woody Lane officiating, with burial in Fairview Cemetery Annex, Denver. Viewing will be Friday 7 - 9 PM.
