Loving Mother & Grandmother
Annie E. Mentzer, 78, of 307 Grant Road, Adamstown, Lancaster County, formerly of Bowmansville, Lancaster County, died Friday evening at the Essa Flory Hospice Center, East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, where she was a guest for the past two weeks. Born in Brecknock Township, Berks County, she was a daughter of the late William David and Ellenora (Bennethum) Moyer. Her husband, Clarence B. Mentzer, died September 17, 1994. She was a member of Emmanuel Evangelical Congregational Church, Adamstown. Retiring in 1983, she was employed for 32 years by Hope Hosiery Mill, Adamstown. Annie was a Gold Star Mother of the Vietnam War, having lost a son, Gerald L. Mentzer, in 1966. She was a Nascar fan, enjoyed collecting angels, dolls and stuffed animals, and was a true Christmas enthusiast, enjoying Christmas decorations year round in her home. Surviving are 2 sons, F. Gene, marriage to Dawn M. (Neff) Moyer, Bowmansville; and Randolph G. Mentzer, Adamstown; a granddaughter; and a sister, Ada May (Moyer) Miller, Reading.
A viewing will be held from our parlors on Monday evening, September 24, 2001, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.
The Funeral ceremony will take place from our funeral home on Tuesday morning, September 25, 2001, at 11:00 AM with Annie's pastor, The Reverend Richard F. Christman, II, officiating. Burial will follow in Bowmansville Union Cemetery, Bowmansville, PA.

Earl Portman McCowan

Earl Portman McCowan, 76, of Cedar Haven Nursing Home, Lebanon, died Friday morning, November 14th, in Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon. Born in Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Earl Lee and Edna Haverilda (Hinchliffe) McCowan. He was an overhead gantry crane operator, having worked for 30 years for Armco Steel, Houston, Texas, retiring in 1980. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and also served in the United States Maritime Service. Surviving are 2 sons, Earl Lee McCowan, Oakhurst, California; and Michael Travis, marriage to Deb (Balish) McCowan, of Myerstown, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.

Ruth E. Merkel, 95, formerly of Denver, Lancaster County, died Sunday afternoon at 4:30 PM in Fellowship Manor, Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, PA, where she resided the past 6 years. Born in Kutztown, Berks County, she was a daughter of the late Grover G. and Lydia (Young) Driebelbis. Her husband, George H. Merkel, died March 12, 1986. She was a Protestant. Retiring in 1975, she was employed for 23 years by the former Dutchmaid, Inc., Ephrata. Mrs. Merkel enjoyed sewing, especially tatting. Surviving is a son, Philip G., marriage to Cheryl J. (Rahe) Merkel, Whitehall, PA.
Ruth's viewing will be held on Friday morning, June 27, 2003, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM in the multi-purpose room of Fellowship Manor, 3000 Fellowship Drive, Whitehall, PA 18052. The funeral ceremony will begin at 11:00 AM with Pastor Harvey Fritz officiating. Graveside services will be on Friday at 2:00 PM from Fleetwood Cemetery, Berks County, PA, with Pastor Mardy von Harten officiating.

Geraldine A. Maurer
February 28, 1937 - December 28, 2003
Geraldine A. Maurer, 66, of 260 Meadowlark Drive, Ephrata, Lancaster County, died Sunday at 7:40 AM in the Essa Flory Hospice Center, East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, where she was a patient since Christmas. Her death follows a 4 month battle with leukemia. Born in Hegins, Schuylkill County, she was a daughter of S. Joseph and Helen I. (Dietrich) Hess, Ephrata. Her husband, Clyde L. Maurer, died March 21, 1995. Geraldine was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Ephrata (Lincoln). She was a graduate of the American Institute of Banking Courses and had been a former Hospice of Lancaster County volunteer. Retiring in 2002, she was employed for 15 years with Ephrata National Bank, last serving in the trust department. She had previously been an assistant vice president in the lending department working out of their Hinkletown Branch. Earlier in her banking career she was the Lincoln Branch manager of the Farmers First Bank from 1967 to 1987. Surviving in addition to her parents are 3 children, Randy B., marriage to Roberta L. (Simmons) Maurer, Ephrata, PA; Ronald A., marriage to Cynthia M. (Stoltzfus) Maurer, Lancaster, PA; and Kristie A., marriage to Randy D. Lawrence, Ephrata, PA; 5 grandchildren and a sister, Linda J., marriage to Rev. Barry S. Zimmerman, Brownstown, PA.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 PM from our funeral home and at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM.
The ceremony celebrating Geraldine's life will be held on Wednesday morning at 11:00 AM with her pastor, The Reverend John C. Miller, and her brother-in-law, The Reverend Barry S. Zimmerman, officiating. Burial will follow in Lincoln Cemetery, Ephrata, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Earl H. Mattis, 84, of Stony Run Village, Denver, ( East Cocalico Township ), Lancaster County, died Friday, January 20, 2006, at 1:30 PM in Luther Acres Manor, Lititz, where he was a guest since May 25, 2005. Born January 2, 1922, in Womelsdorf, Berks County, he was a son of the late C. Harry and Cora (Stupp) Mattis, and was the husband of Janet I. (Gross) Mattis for 60 years. A member of Peace United Church of Christ, Swartzville, Lancaster County, he sang in the church choir. Retiring in 1981, he was employed as a route salesman for Maier’s and Bond Bakeries, Reading, for 40 years. A 1940 graduate of Womelsdorf High School, he was a staff sergeant in the Army Air Force during World War II. He enjoyed traveling and had traveled throughout the USA. Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Cheryl F., wife of David M. Firth, Forest Hill, MD ; 3 grandchildren, Kristen Foard, Kimberly Flick and Kerri Firth; 3 great-grandchildren, Raine & River Flick and Jackson Foard; also a sister, Dorothy Zaun, Annville, PA. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rebecca Showers.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2006, at 12 Noon from Peace United Church of Christ, 37 East Swartzville Road, Denver, PA 17517. The family will receive friends from 11:30 to Noon.
Private inurnment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA.

George R. Metzger
January 2, 1921 - November 12, 2003
George R. Metzger, 82, of 54 Moccasin Drive, Ephrata, Lancaster County, died in his home Wednesday evening at 10:40 PM under the care of Hospice of Lancaster County. Born in Lancaster, he was a son of the late Leon W. and Beatrice (Dougherty) Metzger, and was the husband of Shirley M. (Beers) Grumbine Metzger for 26 years. He was a member of Akron Church of the Brethren, Akron, Lancaster County. He retired in 1986 from Federal-Mogul, Lancaster. Previously he was employed for 28 years by the former RCA Corporation of Lancaster. Metzger received a purple heart for being wounded in Corsica during his World War II Army service. He was a member of the Ephrata VFW and the Ephrata American Legion Post 429. George was an avid bowler during his lifetime and enjoyed boating. Surviving in addition to his wife are 2 sons, Richard R., marriage to Carol (Culliton) Metzger; and Dean, marriage to Rose (Stanczyk) Metzger, both of Lancaster, PA; 6 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Lou (Metzger), marriage to Dexter Sturgis, East Petersburg, PA. Also surviving is a step-son, Robert L., marriage to Elizabeth H. (Cooper) Grumbine, New Holland, PA; 2 step-daughters, Marie (Grumbine) McElhenny, Leola, PA; and Sandra (Grumbine), marriage to Randy Gordon, Manheim, PA; 4 step-grandchildren; and 3 step-great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday morning, November 18, 2003, from 9:30 to 11:00 AM from George's church. The ceremony celebrating George's life will be held on Tuesday morning at 11:00 AM from Akron Church of the Brethren, 613 Main Street, Akron, Lancaster County, PA, with Pastor Tom Weber officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, East Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, PA.

Cordelia H. Miller, 88, formerly of Reinholds, Lancaster County, died at 4:01 AM in the Ephrata Community Hospital where she was a patient one day. She resided at Maple Farms Nursing Center, Akron, since January 2000. She was born in Clay Township, Lancaster County, a daughter of the late Franklin K. and Nora (Heilinger) Frederick. Her husband, Walter K. Miller, died November 13, 1973. Cordelia was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Swartzville, Lancaster County, she enjoyed gardening and crocheting. Surviving are 2 daughters, Betty J. Hackman, Ephrata; and Shirley A., marriage to Terry L.. Rauser, Akron; 3 sons, Roy H., marriage to Nancy J. (Hartranft) Frederick, Denver, PA; Franklin F. Miller, Sr., Stevens, PA; and Paul E., marriage to Scarlett J. (Brossman) Miller, Kleinfeltersville, PA; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson. Also surviving are 3 sisters, Sallie N. marriage to Henry R. Hackman, Ephrata; Myrl M. Burkholder, Mechanicsburg; and Myrtle M, marriage to Donald R. Kindt, Reinholds. She was preceded in death earlier this year by a son Walter F. Miller. Also preceding her in death was a sister, Darcey R. Dinger, and a brother, Franklin A. Frederick.
Cordelia's funeral ceremony will be held Wednesday, November 14, 2001, at 10:00 AM with The Reverend William E. Hoch officiating in our parlor. A viewing will be held on Tuesday evening, November 13, 2001, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Spring Township, Berks County.
