Atwell, Jean

Jean G. (Gordon) Atwell, 83, of Avoca, died Sunday at East Mountain Manor, Plains Township.

Born in West Avoca, she was a daughter of the late William and Margaret (Robbins) Gordon. She was a graduate of Avoca High School. She worked at Brooks Investment Co., Scranton, prior to retiring. She was a member of St. John's Primitive Methodist Church, Avoca.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Ellsworth; brother, Sherman; and sisters, Ethel Phillips and Elizabeth Pointon.

Surviving are daughters, Sharon Krefski and Faye Durkin, both of Avoca; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister, Mae Van Scoy, Moosic; and several nieces and nephews.

A private funeral will be Tuesday at the convenience of the family from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 211 Luzerne Ave., West Pittston, with the Rev. Jeremiah A. Peters Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Shrine Cemetery, the Carverton section of Kingston Township. There will be no calling hours. The family requests that flowers be omitted and that memorial donations be made to St. John's Primitive Methodist Church, 316 Main St., 18641.

Barnhart, Genevieve
February 3, 2001
Genevieve "Jennie" M. (Manganiello) Barnhart, 91, formerly of Boulevard Towers, Pittston, died Saturday at the Highland Manor Nursing Home.

Born in West Pittston, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Rosaria (Ambrosino) Manganiello. She was a member of St. Rocco's Church, Pittston. She worked at the Hitchner Biscuit Co., West Pittston.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; sisters, Theresa Hudson, Lena Brosso and Antoinette Orgie; and brothers, John, Michael, Carmen and Louis.

Surviving are her daughters, Rosemary Plisko and Ann Wallace, both of West Pittston; and three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the Frank A. Gubbiotti Funeral Home, 1030 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Rocco's Church. Interment will be in West Pittston Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Case, Thelma

Thelma (Thompson) Vrhel Case, of Dallas, died Saturday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Albert W. and Louisa (Thomas) Thompson. She was a 1934 graduate of Kingston Township High School. She was a member of Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, Dallas, the Altar Guild and the Episcopal Church Women. She also was a member of the Apollo Singing Club. She and her first husband owned and operated the Park Motel in Trucksville. She later was restaurant manager of the Inn at Buckhill Falls, and worked at Jay's Restaurant in Kingston.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Erich L. Vrhel Sr.; and four brothers and three sisters.

Surviving are her son, Melvin G. Vrhel, the Carverton section of Kingston Township; daughter, Carol Fenstermaker, Whitehall; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and sister, Dorothy Williams, Montrose.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Prince of Peace Church. Memorial Contributions may be made to the church Rector's Discretionary Fund or the Parish Nurse Program, Main Street, 18612. Arrangements are by the Mary Harostock Funeral Home, 480 Main St., Wilkes-Barre.

Danish, Walter

Walter Danish, formerly of New Jersey, died Saturday.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Alexander and Johanna (Kasperick) Danish Sr. He attended Wilkes-Barre schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Military Police in Tokyo. He worked for 30 years at the Waketern Food Corp., New Jersey. He was a member of Holy Resurrection Orthodox Cathedral, Wilkes-Barre.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Carmela Torchia; brothers, Alexander Jr., John and Michael; and sister, Mary Koschak.

Surviving are his daughter, Carmela Antonucci, New Jersey; four grandchildren and one great-grandson; sisters, Hope Wisloski, Hackettstown, N.J.; Olga Zegarski, Middlebury, Fla.; Irene Urban, Wilkes-Barre; brothers, Andrew, New Cumberland; Anthony, Elizabeth, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Requiem services will be at 11 a.m. from the Simon S. Russini Funeral Home Inc., 136 Maffett St., Plains, with Archpriest Joseph Martin officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, the Lee Park section of Wilkes-Barre. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. A parastas service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday with Martin officiating.

Gallagher, Helen

Helen C. (Usher) Gallagher, of Kingston, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Larksville, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Nora (Casey) Usher. She graduated from Larksville High School. She worked for the Wyoming Valley Credit Bureau, prior to retirement. She was a member of St. Ignatius Church, Kingston, and its Senior Citizens Group and Altar Rosary Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ignatius; brothers, Joseph, Charles and Edward Usher; and sister, Jane Usher.

Surviving are her daughters, Anne Thomas, Harveys Lake; Noreen Gallagher, Kingston; and Colleen Engler, Dallas; four grandsons; sister, Loretta McKune, Kingston; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home, 420 Wyoming Ave., Kingston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Ignatius Church. Interment will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Pringle. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Ignatius Church Rectory, 339 N. Grigutis, Anthony

Anthony F. Grigutis, 85, of Pringle Street, Kingston, died Wednesday at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Plains Township.

Born in Kingston, he was a son of the late Ignas and Catherine (Slauzis) Grigutis. He attended Kingston High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Yorktown. He worked at Liberty Throwing Co., Kingston, until 1980. He was a member of St. Mary's Annunciation Church, Kingston.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Anna; Margaret Valentine, Mildred Kupko and Jenny Lucas.

Surviving are his brothers, I. Charles, Delray Beach, Fla.; and Albin, Wilmington, Del.; and nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Kopicki Funeral Home, 263 Zerby Ave., Kingston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Annunciation Church. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Pringle. Friends may call from 8 a.m. Wednesday until time of services.

Hamersley, Donald

Donald Hamersley, 70, of Parkridge Drive, Hunlock Creek, died Saturday at Dorrance Manor, Kingston.

Born in Denora, he was a son of the late Clarence and Margaret (Sherrill) Hamersley. He was employed in the logging business, retiring several years ago.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Delbert and Harry; sisters, Virginia Lewis, Dolores Phillips, and Lawanda and Glendora Hamersley.

Surviving are brothers, Clarence Jr., Kingston; Gilbert, Hunlock Creek; and Sam, Larksville; sisters, Alphretta Swinsky, Hunlock Creek; Bernadine Amorosi, Livingston, N.J.; Mary Hummell, Pine Grove; and Lois Phillips, Shickshinny; and several nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be in Oakdale Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are by the Charles L. Cease Funeral Home, 634 Reyburn Road, Shickshinny.

Hitchcock, Norman
February 4, 2001
Norman D. Hitchcock, 68, of West Pittston, died Saturday in the Visiting Nurse Association Inpatient Unit at the Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Nov. 10, 1932, in Stevensville, he was a son of the late Theron and Aura (Walker) Hitchcock. He attended Camptown public schools. He worked in construction at the R.N. Hunter Co., Taylor. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Floyd and Clifford.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Barbara; daughters, Debra Pruitt, Wilkes-Barre; Norma Rosencrans, the Sweet Valley section of Ross Township; Connie Oldack, Kingston; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Simon S. Russin Funeral Home Inc., 136 Maffett St., Plains, with the Rev. Robert Sauers officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, the Harding section of Exeter Township. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of service.

Korolus, Frank

Frank Korolus, 85, of Burlington, N.J., died Friday at home.He was born Oct. 10, 1915, in Wilkes-Barre. He was a retired welder and had worked at the Chester Shipyards and Willing B. Wire Co. Edgewater Park, N.J. He was a loyal member of the Kingdom Hall Jehovah Witness, since 1958 when he and his late wife were baptized together.

Kretchmer, Paul

Paul H. Kretchmer, 76, of South Coatesville, died Saturday at the Brandywine Hospital and Trauma Center, Coatesville.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Paul H. and Margaret (Bergstresser) Kretchmer. He graduated from Wilkes-Barre High School. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany. He served in the Army from 1945 to 1952 and attained the rank of corporal. He was a machinist at the former Lukens Steel Co., retiring in 1991. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Coatesville, Brandywine Dart Club, West End Fire Co., and the Polish-American Club, all of Coatesville, and the Lukens Veterans' Guild.

Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Frances M. (Goss) Kretchmer; sons, Barry L., Gap; Garry L., Honey Brook; and Larry M., Coatesville; five grandchildren; brother, Carl, Ashley; and sisters, Florence Miller, Wilkes-Barre; and Doris Kushner, Kingston.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 107 S. 17th Ave. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Coatesville. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday. Memorial donations may be made to the church or a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are by the Wilde Funeral Home, Parkesburg.

Regalis, Rose

Rose (Piech) Regalis, 89, of West Main Street, Plymouth, died Saturday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Jan. 15, 1912, in the Buttonwood section of Hanover Township, she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Mary (Krawec) Piech. She attended Hanover Township schools. Prior to her retirement in 1978, she was a seamstress at the Plymouth Dress Factory. Prior to this, she worked at various dress factories throughout the area. She was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers' Union. She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Plymouth. She was a member of St. Olga's Club and other parish functions. She was a member of St. Mary's Senior Citizens Friendship Club, Plymouth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph (Yozzy); brother, Adam; and sisters, Katherine Brinzo and Mary Mesh.

Surviving are daughters, Rosalie Giusti, Meridan, Conn.; Mary Althauser, Longmont, Colo.; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Andrew, Upper Askam; Michael, Wapwallopen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday from the S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 W. Main St., Plymouth, followed by a Divine Liturgy at 10:30 a.m. in SS. Peter and Paul Church. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Plymouth Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Parastas will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Vasyl Repela officiating. Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to the SS. Peter and Paul Church Building Fund or the Plymouth Public Library.

Taffera, Giulia

Giulia (Fancelli) Taffera, 98, of Fallon Street, Old Forge, died Saturday in the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice Inpatient Unit at Community Medical Center, Scranton.

Born July 23, 1902, in Sostino, Italy, she was a daughter of the late Antonio and Santina (Foglietta) Fancelli. She attended Italian schools and settled in the United States in 1925. She was a seamstress at the Teresa Dress Factory in Old Forge and was also a homemaker. She was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Old Forge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; son, Angelo; six brothers, Adamo, Luigi, lvo, Angelo, Celestino, and Felicia; and sisters, Marietta and Eva.

Surviving are her sons, Anthony, Seattle; Roger, Scranton; Louis, Raritan, N.J.; Alex, Evo, and Sandy, all of Old Forge; 19 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday from the Victor M. Ferri Funeral Home, 522 Fallon St., Old Forge, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, West Grace Street. Interment will be in Old Forge Cemetery. Tardio Sr., 88, of East South Street, Wilkes-Barre, formerly of Plains Township, died Sunday at the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice Center Inpatient Unit at Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.Born in Plains Township, he was a son of the late Louis and Veneranda (DelGuidice) Tardio. He was a 1930 graduate of Plains High School. He was a machinist for most of his life at area factories. He also was the sole proprietor of the Plains Press. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Plains Township, and its Holy Name Society. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Vancavage, Bertha

Bertha (Konopinski) Vancavage, 90, formerly of Murray Street, Forty Fort, died Saturday at Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Mahanoy City, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Amelia Konopinski. She was a member of Saint Ignatius Church, Kingston. Many years ago, she was an active member of Saint Casimir's Church, Mahanoy City.

Surviving are her son, Edmund, Kingston; sisters, Stephanie Salata, Schuylkill Haven; and Edna Spitko, Levittown; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Hugh B. Hughes & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Saint Ann's Chapel, Kingston, with the Rev. Thomas Petro officiating. Interment will be in Saint Casimir's Parish Cemetery, Mahanoy City. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. Tuesday until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Saint Ignatius Church (Social Office), 335 Maple Ave., 18704.

Vito J. Cardaci, 71, of New York and Pocono Lake, died Sunday at his home.

Born in New York City, he was a son of the late Joseph and Domenica (Pulvirenti) Cardaci.

He was a graduate of St. Michael's High School, New York.

He was owner and chief executive officer of Vital Office Co., New York.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Rosalie Lee Rock.

Surviving are his sisters, Vita C. Gray, Southington, Conn.; Filomenia Hartell, Lynbrook, N.Y.; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Yeosock Funeral Home, 40 S. Main St., Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Wilkes-Barre.

Interment will be in Fern Knoll Burial Park, Dallas.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
