Carol S. Novak, of Rear William Street, Avoca, formerly of Exeter, died Thursday.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of Doris (Kuklewicz) Charney, of Exeter, and the late Frank J. Charney. She was a graduate of Wyoming Area High School and was a teller at The First National Bank, Wyoming, and at the Exeter Bank. She was a member of St. Peter & Paul Church, Avoca.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Henry E.; son, Anthony, at home; daughter, Amy, at home; sisters, Kathleen James, Harding, Janice Phillips, Wyoming; brother, David F., Exeter; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 8:45 a.m. Monday from the Metcalfe & Shaver Funeral Home, Inc., 504 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Peter & Paul Church. Monsignor Alexander T. Kulik will officiate. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Moosic. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Peter & Paul Church, 912 Vine Street, Avoca, 18641; or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Reynolds, James
June 16, 2000
James J. Reynolds, 55, of Bank Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Friday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Oct. 12, 1944, in New Jersey, he was the son of the late James and Elizabeth (Brady) Reynolds. He was a 1962 graduate of Hanover Township Area High School and worked in the plumbing industry. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, 109th Field Artillery, Kingston.

Surviving are his wife of 33 years, the former Elaine Masavage; daughter, Diane, Tannersville; and son, James B., Towson, Maryland.

The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday from the Mamary-Durkin Funeral Home, 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church. The Rev. Duane Gavitt will officiate. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Bear Creek. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Fresenious Medical Care, Wilkes-Barre; or to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Auron, Ben
June 17, 2000
Ben Auron, 90, of Pittsburgh, and formerly of Swoyersville, died Saturday in the Charles M. Morris Nursing Center, Pittsburgh.

Born in Swoyersville, he was the son of the late Philip and Hannah Kagan Auron. He was self-employed as an upholsterer before retiring and was a member of the former United Orthodox Synagogue.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances.

Surviving are his sons, Philip, Framingham, Mass.; Marshal, Westford; sister, Bertha Paltsky, Florida; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hoche Yocher Cemetery, Hanover Township, with Rabbi Meir Rosenberg officiating. Arrangements are by Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, 348 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre.

Austin, Thomas
June 15, 2000
Thomas J. Austin, 39, of Springfield, and formerly of Gladwyne, died Thursday in Springfield.

Born Dec. 12, 1960, in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of James and Elizabeth (Lawlor) Austin, of Mountaintop. He was educated at Bishop Hoban High School and received his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Penn State University and his master's degree in public administration from the University of Southern California.

He was employed as a probation parole officer for the Federal Court System of Philadelphia. He served as an aviation brigade fire support officer for 15 years for the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in the 28th Infantry Division Auxiliary and received several awards.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Claire A. (Anstadt) Austin; daughters, Lily C. and Grace M. Austin, both of Springfield; brothers, James Austin, Cincinnati; John Austin, Kingston; Mark Austin, Fairless Hills; sisters, Kathleen Dewey, Mountaintop; Mary Elizabeth Austin-Rose, Frederick, Md.; Patricia Hueber, Rynol; and Lori Anne Austin, Mountaintop.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Springfield. Interment will be in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. Cichonski, Frank

Frank Cichonski, 87, of Lincoln Street, Dupont, died Saturday at his home.

Born Jan. 4, 1913, in Dupont, he was the son of the late Catherine (Skowron) and Thomas Cichonski. A lifelong resident of Dupont, he was a carpenter. He was a member of Holy Mother of Sorrows Polish National Catholic Church and St. John's Lodge F&AM, Pittston.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Violet Mollick, Frances Melliff, Vivian Steransky and Lottie Pupa; and brother, Stanley.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, the former Estelle Harcz; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Francis A. Bednarski Funeral Home, 340 Main St., Dupont, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Mother of Sorrows Polish National Catholic Church, with the Rev. Andrew Bilinski officiating. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Dupont. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday. Members of the Masonic lodge will meet at 8 p.m.

Evans, Edward

Edward B. Evans, of Wilkes-Barre, died Saturday at his home.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Stanley and Louise (Hughes) Evans. A graduate of Meyers High School and Dolan Mortuary College, he was a member of the Luzerne County, Pennsylvania and National funeral directors associations.

He owned and operated the Edward B. Evans Funeral Home, Parrish Street, Wilkes-Barre, for 55 years, retiring in 1999. After retiring, he served as a consultant to his successors, the Leo P. Lehman Funeral Home, Hazle Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was active in local and national antique and classic automobile clubs. He was a life member of the Welsh Bethel Baptist Church; member of the Irem Temple AAONMS; Irem Temple Country Club; Lodge 61, F&AM; and the Caldwell Consistory.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Peggy Fraley Evans; sons, Edward L. and Mark E.; and daughter, Judi Smith.

Surviving are his sons, James B., Mountaintop; Jeffrey M., Mountainhome; Richard L., Nanticoke; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Leo P. Lehman Funeral Home, 689 Hazle Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with services at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Welsh Bethel Baptist Church, Parrish and Loomis Streets, Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Donald Hartshorne officiating. Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday. Memorial donations may be made to Shrine Children's Charities, c/o Irem Temple.

Hughes, Oran

Oran D. Hughes, of Moosic Heights, Avoca, died Saturday at the Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Oran D. and Mabel B. DePew Hughes. He was educated in the Moosic schools and resided in Moosic most of his life.

He was formerly employed as a coal miner and was a truck driver for Eastern Freight and GAF, Patterson, N.J. He retired as road commissioner from the borough of Moosic. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received the World War II Victory Medal.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Sally Webb.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Marie Gurney Hughes, with whom he celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary on Nov. 24, 1999; sons, David Hughes, Hunlock Creek; Billy Hughes, Kingston; Oran Hughes, Taylor; daughters, Bernice Wadorsky, Duryea; Patty Pavalonis and Doreen Kolbeck, both of Moosic; Theresa Allen, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Roxanne Healey, Scranton; Jane Decker, Taylor; brothers, Clarence and Willard Hughes and George Radle, all of Moosic; Jerome and John Radle, both of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; 28 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, 517 N. Main St., Old Forge, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Lawrence O'Toole R.C. Church, Main Street, Old Forge, with the Rev. Dr. Michael J. Kirwin officiating. Interment will be in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

McNally, Edith

Edith B. McNally died Saturday at Outlook Pointe Commons, Wyoming, where she was a resident.

Born in Fort Smith, Ark., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Gertrude Lavalette Bourne. She was a graduate of the Metropolitan School of Nursing, New York City. She was employed by the Pilgrim Hospital, Bretwood, Long Island, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter McNally.

Surviving are her son, Peter, Exeter; brother, Charles Bourne, Malden, Mass.; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Donnelly-Callahan Funeral Home, 802 Susquehanna Ave., West Pittston. Interment will be Wednesday in the Long Island National Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Petro, Helen

Helen (Hermanofski) Petro, 91, formerly of East Enterprise Street, Glen Lyon, died Thursday at the Birchwood Nursing Center, Nanticoke.

Born Nov. 22, 1908, in the Honey Pot section of Nanticoke, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Zipay Hermanofski. She was a resident of Glen Lyon most of her life and attended the Glen Lyon School. Before retiring, she was employed by General Cigar Co., Nanticoke. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, East Noble Street, Nanticoke.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul P. Petro; son, Joseph; granddaughter, Rebecca Cholewa; brothers, Michael Jr., John, Joseph, Steven, Andrew and Paul Hermanofski; sisters, Mary Malloy and Margaret Levandowski.

Surviving are her daughter, Marion Olshefski, Glen Lyon; three grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday from the George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 211 W. Main St., Glen Lyon, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery. Friends may call from 8:30 a.m. until the time of services Monday.

Wilson, Stephen
June 17, 2000
Stephen G. Wilson, 83, of Exeter Avenue, West Pittston, died Saturday at his home.

Born Dec. 13, 1916, in Pittston, he was the son of the late George and Minnie Chapman Wilson. He graduated from West Pittston High School in 1935. Before retiring in 1979, he was employed by PP&L, Scranton, for 25 years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Luzerne Avenue Baptist Church and Valley Lodge 499 F&AM, both in West Pittston.

Surviving are his wife, the former Elizabeth Jones; daughter, Sandra, at home; sister, Ruth Wilson, Wyoming; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the Luzerne Avenue Baptist Church or Hospice Care of the VNA of Luzerne County. Arrangements are by Howell-Lussi Funeral Home, 509 Wyoming Ave., West Pittston.

Kmetz, Madeline

Madeline C. (Budzyn) Kmetz, 63, of Hometown, died Friday at Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale.Born Aug. 19, 1936, in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of Michael and Martha (Richards) Budzyn. She was a homemaker and member of St. Richard's Church, Barnesville.

Mascelli, Peter

Peter J. Mascelli Sr., 85, of Eagles Court, Ashley, died Saturday in Kingston Health Care Center after an illness.Born and raised in Pittston, he was the son of the late Peter and Albina Masciolini Mascelli. He was employed first as a coal miner in Carbondale and later as a civil service worker for 20 years. He retired as a laborer for Addy Asphalt, Keystone.

Evans, Edward B.

Edward B. Evans, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Saturday at his home. He owned and operated the Edward B. Evans Funeral Home on Parrish Street in Wilkes-Barre for 55 years, retiring at the end of 1999. Since his retirement, he has served as a consultant to its successor, the Leo P. Lehman Funeral Home on Hazle Avenue in Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Stanley and Louise (Hughes) Evans. He was marriage to Peggy Fraley Evans for 47 years. Mrs. Evans passed away in March 1991.

A graduate of Meyers High School and Dolan Mortuary College, he was a member of the Luzerne County Funeral Directors Assocation, the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Assocation and the National Funeral Directors Association.

Mr. Evans was active in local and national antique and classic automobile clubs. He was a lifelong member of the Welsh Bethel Baptist Church, and a member of the Irem Temple AAONMS, the Irem Temple Country Club, Lodge 61 of the Free and Accepted Masons and the Caldwell Consistory. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by three sons, James B., of Mountaintop; Jeffrey M., of Mountainhome; and Richard L., of Nanticoke; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son Edward L., in 1945; a daughter, Judi Smith, in 1994; a son, Mark E., in 1995; and a sister, Shirley Young.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Leo P. Lehman Funeral Home, 689 Hazle Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with services at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Welsh Bethel Baptist Church, Parrish and Loomis Streets, Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. Donald Hartshome will officiate.

Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shrine Children's Charities, c/o Irem Temple, 52 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, Pa. 18701.

Feiner, Louise

Louise (Miscavage) Feiner, 84, of Cedar Village, Wilkes-Barre Township, died Sunday at her home.

Born April 24, 1916, in Parsons, Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Hedwig (Waskiewicz) Miscavage.

She was a graduate of Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney; sisters, Josephine Senderovitz, Stella Martin, Adele Mack, Helen Kopcho and Mary Barr; and brothers, Anthony and Frank Miscavage.

Surviving are her son, Richard D., with whom she resided; daughter, Diane Navarrett, Concord, Calif.; two grandsons; sister, Elizabeth Gavel, Buffalo, N.Y.; and brother, Stanley Miscavage, Thornhurst Manor.

Private funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Frances Cabrini Church, Carverton.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, Wilkes-Barre.

Gatusky Sr., John
June 17, 2000
John J. Gatusky Sr., 82, of Falls Street, Ashley, died Saturday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Jan. 7, 1918, in Ashley, he was a son of the late Albert and Eufemia (Giza) Gatusky.

He was a 1938 graduate of Ashley High School.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a lead tank gunner with the 3rd Army, 4th Armored Division, 37th Tank Battalion. He served from 1942-1945 in Central Europe, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and five Bronze Stars.

He was self-employed as an electrician.

He was president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 163, Wilkes-Barre, and a member of Holy Family Church, Sugar Notch, and American Legion Post 673, Ashley.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph, Dr. Charles and Frank; sisters, Sister Richard and Sister Richard Marie, both of the Order of St. Francis; Ann Benavage, Philomenia Gatusky, Nell Olshefski; and two Sisters of the Bernadine Order.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, the former Irene Welnoski; sons, John J. Jr., at home; and Mark, Wilkes-Barre; two grandchildren; and sister, Evelyn Curry, Ashley.

Military funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Family Church.

Interment will be in St. Mary's of the Maternity Cemetery, West Wyoming.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. American Legion Post 673 will hold services at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Holy Family Church Building Fund, 828 Main St., Sugar Notch, Pa. 18706.

Mitkowski, John
June 17, 2000
John C. Mitkowski, 82, of Dallas, died Saturday at the home of his daughter in Harveys Lake.

Born in Providence, R.I., he was a son of the late Alex and Josephine (Hoynowski) Szalas Mitkowski.

He attended the Harter High School, West Nanticoke.

He was warehouse manager for Capitol Distributors, New York.

He attended the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witnesses.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Alex and Frank.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, the former Marie Domena; sons, Richard, Mountaintop; and Anthony and Ronald, both of Nanticoke; daughters, Diane Sabol, North Carolina; Susan Garrahan, Springville; and Laura Fowler, Harveys Lake; sisters, Clara Falb, Tuscon, Ariz.; and Lottie Cease, New York; 19 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home Inc., S. 614 Hanover St., Nanticoke, with Elder Andrew Lesko of the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witnesses officiating.

Interment will be in Good Shepherd Polish National Catholic Church parish Cemetery, Lake Silkworth.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
