Josephine Palmentere, of Butler Street, Forty Fort, died Sunday at her home.

Born in Luzerne, she was a daughter of the late Calogero and Vincensnza (Piazza) Syracuse. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, formerly Sacred Heart Church, Luzerne, West Side Senior Citizens, International Ladies Garment Workers Union, and the Swoyersville Hose Co. No. 2 Ladies Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; and brother, Joseph "Peppy" Syracuse.

Surviving are her sons, Joseph P., Forty Fort; Charles J., Dallas; daughter, Vivian Williams, Forty Fort; seven grandchildren; sisters, Jennie Hoffman and Mary Burkhardt, both of Wilkes-Barre; brothers, Charles Siracusecq, Forty Fort; and James Siracusecq, Swoyersville; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 8:30 a.m. Thursday from the Lehman-Gregory Funeral Home, Inc., 281 Chapel St., Swoyersville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at Holy Family Parish in St. Ann's Church, Luzerne. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton, Kingston Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. There will be a Christian wake service Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, a single rose was requested, and memorial donations may be made to the Day Development Center of the Hospice of the VNA.

Petruno, Bernadine

Bernadine Petruno, 80, of Carey Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, died Saturday at the Visiting Nurses Association Hospice House, Wilkes-Barre.

Funeral arrangements are pending from the Grontkowski Funeral Home, 51-53 W. Green St., Nanticoke.

Roman, Anna

Anna Mae (Masonis) Roman, 65, of Sunnyvale, Calif., died June 13 at her home.

Born in Edwardsville, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Nell Masonis. She was a graduate of Edwardsville High School and received a bachelor's degree in business administration from San Jose State University. She was a benefits analyst with the Tandem Corp. and Conner, Inc.

Surviving are her husband of 44 years, Emil; daughter, Karen Brownell, Woodinville, Wash.; sons, Dave, Morgan Hill, Calif.; and Ron, Pittsburgh; four grandchildren; and sisters, Nancy Roberts, Wyoming; Dorothy Duesler, Courtdale; and Carol Flowers, Dallas.

Friends may attend a Memorial Mass at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Annunciation Church, 258 Zerbey Ave., Kingston. Monsignor Joseph Lasky will officiate. Interment will follow in the parish Cemetery, Pringle.

Schifano, Joseph
July 3, 2000
Joseph A. Schifano, 49, of Pine Street, Pittston, died Monday at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre.

Born March 27, 1951, in Pittston, he was a son of the Grace (Marranca) Schifano and the late Angelo Schifano. He was a 1970 graduate of West Side Technical School, worked for Schott Glass Technologies and served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Rocco's Roman Catholic Church, Pittston, member and vice president of the Pittston Area Football Booster Club, coached basketball for St. Rocco's Rangers, was a third degree Knight of Columbus, John F. Kennedy Council, Pittston, and was the union president at Schott Glass Technologies.

Surviving are his wife, Eva (Serino) Schifano; daughters, Dena Meager, Auburn, Maine; and Angela Schifano, at home; son, Keith, at home; one granddaughter; brothers, Anthony, Cooperstown, N.Y.; Angelo, West Pittston; and Robert, Belleville; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Graziano Funeral Home, Inc., 700 Pittston Blvd., Pittston Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Rocco's Roman Catholic Church. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Slawinski, Eleanor
June 30, 2000
Eleanor M. Slawinski, 73, of Unionville, died Friday at Centre Crest Nursing Home, Bellefonte.

Born May 25, 1927, in Breslau, Hanover Township, she was a daughter of the late Louis D. and Eleanor M. (Gregory) Williams. She was a tax collector, and member of the Church of Christ and the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward R.; and son, Edward R.

Surviving are her daughters, Kimberly E. Gray, McMinnville, Ore.; two grandchildren; brothers, William Williams, Unionville; and Robert L. Williams, Dillsburg; and sister, Nell Hollowas, McKinney.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home, Milesburg, with the Rev. Todd Maurer officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Sweet Valley. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Thomas, Maria

Maria E. Thomas, formerly of Thornhurst, Lehigh Township, died Sunday at the Little Flower Manor, Wilkes-Barre, where she was a resident.

She was born in Reginsburg, Germany, a daughter of the late Otto and Albina (Krieg) Mergenthaller. She was a governess. She was a member and lector of St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church, Thornhurst, and life member of the Thornhurst Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are her brother, Otto Mergenthaller, Germany; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William R.

A Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be private and in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Thornhurst. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church. Funeral arrangements are by the Snowdon Funeral Home, 401 Church St., Moscow.

Woytas, Ellen

Ellen M. Woytas of East Northampton Street, Wilkes-Barre Township, formerly of Bear Creek, died Sunday at the Mercy Special Care Hospital, Nanticoke.Born Sept. 12, 1920, in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Mark and Margaret (Oliver) Wildes. She was a nurses aide at Valley Crest Nursing Home and attended St. Joseph's Friary, Wilkes-Barre Township.

Lee Small, 75, of Delray Beach, Fla., formerly of Kingston, died June 25 at Hospice by the Sea, Boca Raton, Fla.Born Oct. 6, 1924, in New York, he was a son of the late Rose and Sam Small. He owned Lee Small Fabrics and was U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War and received the Purple Heart.

Senczakowicz, John

John (Sinco) Senczakowicz, 88, of Daytona Beach, Fla., formerly of Nanticoke, died Wednesday at his home.Born in Sheatown, Newport Township, he was a son of the late Vladimir and Euphemia (Homyack) Senczakowicz. He was a manager of the Pennsylvania State Liquor Control Board and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He helped establish the Nanticoke Little League and the local chapter of American Legion baseball and basketball Dream Games, was a baseball, basketball and softball official in Pennsylvania and Florida, and was inducted into the American Legion Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of St. Nicholas Church, Six County Firemen's Association and American Legion Post 350, Nanticoke.

McGlynn, Shannon

Shannon McGlynn, 29, of Lancaster, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died June 29.Born March 30, 1971, in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of Karen and William McGlynn. She was a 1989 graduate of Bishop Hoban High School.

Shelhamer, Gary

Gary A. Shelhamer, 47, of Church Road, Mountaintop, died Monday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Oct. 13, 1952, in Nanticoke, he was a son of the late Samuel and Nita (Rosencrans) Shelhamer. He served in the U.S. Navy.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Christine.

Surviving are his wife, the former Janet Coleman; daughters, Lisa Jennings, White Haven; and Lori Walski, Wilkes-Barre; five grandchildren; sisters, Shirley Quinn, Akron, Ohio; and Sandra Charnetski, Nanticoke; brother, Samuel J., Jr., Berwick; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday from the Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home, 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. Joseph Streit officiating. Interment will be in Alberts Cemetery, Wright Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Ann Marie Granick, 65, of Columbia Avenue, Ashley, died Monday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Wilkes-Barre Township, she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Julia (Chernauskas) Yankoski. She was a graduate of Wilkes-Barre Township High School, worked for Thrift Drug Co. and was a member of Holy Rosary Church, Ashley.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Rita Valesha.

Surviving are her husband of 42 years, Paul Charles; daughters, Judith Ann Granick, Kingston; and Nancy Marie, Cape May, N.J.; son, Mark, at home; one grandson; brothers, Edward Yankoski, Detroit; and Anthony, Tamarac, Fla.; sisters, Audrey Kerestes, Ashley; and Connie Ostrowski, Melrose, Fla.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the John W. Frank Funeral Home, 124 S. Grant St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Bear Creek. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Rosary Church.

Murtha, Joseph

Joseph J. Murtha, 71, of Nafus Street, Pittston, died Monday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born April 25, 1929, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Michael Joseph and Nora (Kane) Murtha. He was a 1946 graduate of Jenkins High School, physical plant director at the University of Scranton and a general building contractor. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army, was a member of St. Rocco's Roman Catholic Church and the Montedoro Society, Pittston, life member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, John F. Kennedy Council, Pittston, and St. Rocco's Holy Name Society, and board member of the Better Business Bureau of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Surviving are his wife, Lucy (Mantione) Murtha; daughter, attorney Virginia Murtha Cowley, West Pittston; two grandchildren; brothers, Thomas and James, both of Highland Hills; sister, Mollie Flanagan, Scranton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lucie Jo; and brother, Michael. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the Graziano Funeral Home, 700 Pittston Blvd., Pittston Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Rocco's Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Pittston. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Michael George Govlier Sr., 84, of Plains Township, died Monday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Oct. 24, 1915, in Plains Township, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Gawla) Govlier. He attended Plains Township public schools, worked at the Sincavage Lumber Co. and was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, both of Plains Township.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Frances Kuter; brother, Stanley; and sisters, Catherine Washcalus and Anna Ciolek.

Surviving are his son, Michael J. Jr., Harveys Lake; two nieces and one nephew.

Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Thursday from the Simon S. Russin Funeral Home, Inc., 136 Maffett St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph Greskiewicz will officiate. Mary E. DeAngelis, 87, of Masthope Plank Road, Lackawaxen, formerly of Old Forge, died Monday at home.

Born in Scranton, she was a daughter of the late Francis and Grace (Genaccaro) DiVecchia. She attended the Scranton public schools, was a waitress in several area restaurants and was a member of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, Old Forge.

Surviving are her husband of 67 years, Sandy; her daughters, Seena DeRobertis, Old Forge; Dr. Cathy DeAngelis Harris, Baltimore; and Grace Herron, Dunmore; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; brother, Frank DiVecchia, Scranton; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra; brothers, Charles, James, Domnickcq and Thomas DiVecchia; and sisters, Anna Russo and Carmella Paul.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the Louis V. Ciuccio Funeral Home, 145 Moosic Road, Old Forge, with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's of the Assumption Church. nna (Kyttle) Yastremski, 72, of Luzerne, died Monday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Dec. 12, 1927, in Chester, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Egner) Ryan. She was a homemaker and clerk for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Public Assistance.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Kyttle; and brother, Hugh Ryan.

Surviving are her son, Howard G. Kyttle, Larksville; daughters, Ruth Ann Huffman, Shickshinny; Linda Kyttle, Swoyersville; Romayne Kyttle, Sweet Valley; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and brothers, Thomas Ryan, Avalon, N.J.; William Ryan, Aston; and John Ryan, Biloxi, Miss.

The funeral will be at 8 a.m. Friday from the Curtis L. Swanson Funeral Home, Inc, corner of Routes 29 and 118, Pikes Creek, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Ann's Church, Luzerne. Walukonis, William

William J. Walukonis, 89, of the Greenwood section of Moosic, formerly of Pittston, died Monday at the Community Medical Center, Scranton.

Born in Duryea, he was a son of the late Anthony and Pauline Walukonis. He attended Duryea Schools, owned and operated the former Humpty Dumpty Grocery Store, Pittston, with his late wife, and was a breakman on the Lehigh Valley Railroad. He was a member of St. Mary Czestochowa Church, Moosic, and played baseball for the Lithuanian Club, Pittston, and The Duryea Redman and the Mohawks.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Helen Milauskas; granddaughter, Patrice Kelly; brothers, Anthony, Frank and Joseph; and sisters, Isabella Walukonis, Julia Jerry, Mary Hodiak and Anna Kolekowski.

Surviving are his daughters, Corinne, at home; Alberta Ochall, Davidsonville, Md.; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 9:15 a.m. Friday from the Bernard J. Piontek Funeral Home Inc, 204 Main St., Duryea, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Czestochowa Church. The Rev. Albert Oldfield will officiate. Interment will be in St. Casimir's Cemetery, Pittston. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Agnes E. Klass, of Stites Street, West Wyoming, died Tuesday at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

Born in Pittston, she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Louise (Wilk) Osecki. She was a graduate of Pittston High School and Pittston Hospital School of Nursing, was a registered nurse at Pittston Hospital, West Wyoming School nurse and Wyoming Area School nurse. She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, West Wyoming.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Edwin Osecki; and sisters, Rose, Frances and Martha Osecki and Mary Brennan.

Surviving are her husband of 54 years, James W.; son, James R., North Huntingdon; three grandchildren; sister, Helen Surma, Jenkins Township; and brother, Thomas Osecki, Peckville.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the Metcalfe & Shaver Funeral Home, Inc., 504 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton, Kingston Township. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
