Steve Zona, of RR 1, Factoryville, died Sunday at Community Medical Center, Scranton.Born April 28, 1921, in West Brownsville, he was a son of the late Steve and Elizabeth (Gerhardt) Zona.He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Ball, Fred

Fred J. Ball, 86, of Shenandoah, Iowa, died Friday at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of Fred and Elizabeth (Griesmer) Ball. He was a 1932 graduate of GAR High School and after another year of post-graduate studies, he attended Penn State University, attaining a bachelor of science and masters of science degree in psychology. He was a personnel research assistant at Penn State University, where he was later an adviser in the division of Undergraduate Studies. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, serving a four-year tour of duty as a psychological researcher and consultant~.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Lorimar) Ball; and sister, Eleanor M.

Surviving are his brothers, Frank, Wilkes-Barre; and Robert, of Fullerton, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside Memorial Services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Farragut Cemetery, Farragut, Iowa.

Bergeron, Thomas

Thomas J. Bergeron, 34, of Myers Street, Edwardsville, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died Sunday at his home from Hodgkin's Disease.Born Nov. 20, 1965, in Hazleton, he was a son of Louis and Amelia "Millie" (Szela) Bergeron, of Sugarloaf. He was a distribution supervisor for Lord & Taylor at their distribution center in Wilkes-Barre and was a Catholic.

D'Alessandro, Diane
Aug. 14, 2000
Diane M. D'Alessandro, 56, of Scranton, formerly of Old Forge, died Monday at the Hospice Unit of the Mid Valley Hospital, Peckville.

Born Aug. 15, 1943, she was a daughter of the late Charles D. and Ethel J. (Wigley) Gaylets. She attended Old Forge schools, received her nursing certification at the Scranton Vocational Technical School and was a private duty practical nurse. She was a member of the Lackawanna County Kennel Club and was a breeder of Sheltie dogs.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Lee; and grandson, Brian.

Surviving are her son, Jeff, Scranton; daughter, Beth Ann, Mount Cobb; seven grandchildren; sister, Sandra Jensen, Scranton; nieces and nephews.

Cremation will be at Maple Hill Crematory, Hanover Township. Graveside Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, Elmhurst. Services will be by the Rev. Kerry A. Bingaman. Arrangements are by the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, 517 N. Main St., Old Forge.

Jean R. "Jennie Kopacz" Fedor, 83, of Riverstreet Manor, Wilkes-Barre, formerly of Plains Township, died Sunday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Edwardsville, she was a daughter of the late George and Rose Kopacz. She attended Edwardsville schools, worked for the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, the former General Cigar Co. and the Blue Ribbon Bakery, both of Kingston, and was a member of Sacred Heart/St. John's Parish Community, North Wilkes-Barre.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo D.; brothers; John and Ignatius Kopacz; and sister, Josephine Benarick.

Surviving are her son, Leo D. "Butch," Plains Township; daughter, Nancy Barry, Edwardsville; stepsons, Raymond, Wilkes-Barre; and Robert T., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; four grandchildren, 10 stepgrandchildren; sisters; Stella Donavon, Chevy Chase, Md.; and Dolores Swaintek, Kingston; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the John V. Morris Funeral Home, 625 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. Monsignor John J. Sempa will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Roman Catholic Cemetery, Carverton, Kingston Township. Friends may call from 5 to 8:30 p.m. this evening at the funeral home. In lieu of floral tributes, memorial donations may be made to St. John's Parish Community, 601 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, 18705; or to the Riverside Adult Day Care Center, Plains Township.

Elizabeth "Sis" Gerko, of Prospect Road, Mountaintop, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born March 31, 1927, in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Dennis and Elizabeth (Lynch) Grimes. She was a 1945 graduate of Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, trimmer in the area garment industry with several dress and apparel factories in Wilkes-Barre and member of St. Jude's Church, Mountaintop.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; brother, John Grimes; and sister, Mary Grimes.

Surviving are her son, Joseph, Plano, Texas; one granddaughter; brothers, Dennis Grimes, Sugar Notch; William Grimes, Pittston; James Grimes, Wilkes-Barre; and Robert Grimes, El Paso, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Jendrzejewski Funeral Home, 21 N. Meade St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Jude's Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Grabowski, Anna

Anna Grabowski, 79, of Grove Street, Exeter, died Monday at her home.

Born in Exeter, she was a daughter of the late John and Anna (Kotulak) Thomas. She worked at Star Garment Co., Exeter, and the Consolidated Cigar Co., West Pittston, and was a member of St. John's Church, Exeter, and the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael, John and Joseph Thomas; and sister, Mary Gowisnok.

Surviving are her husband of 51 years, John; daughter, Annette Steinbacher, Boyertown; sons, John, Norristown; and Michael, Exeter; two grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Frank A. Gubbiotti Funeral Home, 1030 Wyoming Ave., Exeter, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. John's Church. Interment will be in St. John's Slovak Cemetery, Exeter. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial donations may be made to St. Cecilia's-St. John's Outreach Program, Exeter.

Mary V. Jacklosky, of Warner Street, Plains Township, died Monday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Jenkins Township, she was the daughter of the late John Peter and Ann (Lusnak) Voitus. She worked at Leslie Fay and was a member of Sacred Heart-St. John Parish Community, Wilkes-Barre, and the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert.

Surviving are her daughters, Alberta Kosloski, Stanhope, N.J.; Marilyn Starna, Pittston; Cheryl Hritz, Hilldale section of Plains Township; and Linda Elmy and Ann Marie Banks, both of Wilkes-Barre; sons, Robert, Hilldale; and John, Wyoming; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Yeosock Funeral Home, 40 S. Main St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Dallas. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross, 156 S. Kane, Sarah

Sarah (Grimes) Kane, 68, of Sugar Notch, died Monday at the Hospice Community Care Inpatient Unit at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Nov. 21, 1931, in the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Ruth (Bell) Grimes. She was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, and a partner in the Charles N' Mary Music Co., Wilkes-Barre. She was the administrative assistant to the financial secretary and treasurer of the American Federation of Musicians Union Local 140 and member and treasurer of the Mozart Club.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary E. Grimes.

Surviving are her husband, Anthony F., Jr.; sister, Ruth Grimes, Miners Mills; brother, Peter Joseph Grimes, Norristown; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday from the McLaughlin Funeral Service, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church of The Immaculate Conception, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial donations may be made to United Way of Wyoming Valley, Wilkes-Barre.

John J. Lear, 47, of Levittown, died Aug. 1, at the Abington Hospital, Montgomery County.

Born in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Roy P. and Eleanor E. (Whalen) Lear. He was a landscaper.

Surviving are his brother, Roy R., Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters, Dolores M. Holzman, Levittown; Mary Kay Mital, Harveys Lake; and Eleanor E. Drew, Fredericksburg, Va.; and several nieces nephews, cousins and one uncle.

Funeral services and interment were held in Levittown. Funeral arrangements were by the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Levittown.

Lucarelli, Leo

Leo R. "Lalo" Lucarelli, 85, of South Main Street, Old Forge, died Monday at the Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton.

Born in Hughestown, he was a son of the late Rinaldo and Lucia (Petrini) Lucarelli. He attended schools in the Hughestown School District, was a construction worker, a cook at Arcaro & Genell Restaurant, Old Forge, worked for Pagnotti Coal Co., and was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Old Forge.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph, Charles and Louis; and sisters, Mary Martinelli and Ann Frati.

Surviving are his brother, Arthur, Old Forge; sisters, Nellie, Wilkes-Barre; and Madeline, Old Forge; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the Victor M. Ferri Funeral Home, 522 Fallon St., Old Forge, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Interment will be in Old Forge Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Pollard, James

James R. Pollard, 38, of New Street, Duryea, died Saturday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born March 25, 1962, in Avoca, he was the son of the late James Franklin and Mary Louise (Laird) Pollard. He was a member of Brick United Methodist Church, Duryea, Germania Hose Co., its Scuba Team and the Polish Falcons.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Edith Kate.

Surviving are his fiancee, Marion Tucker; her daughter, Melissa, whom he was helping to raise; sister, Isabel, Duryea; and several aunts and uncles.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Marcy Cemetery, Duryea. The Rev. Robert Wood will officiate. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home, Inc., 728 Main St., Avoca. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Germania Hose Co. and its Scuba Team, Foote Avenue, Duryea.

Rowe, Ruth

Ruth Mae Rowe, 72, of Alamogordo, N.M., formerly of Valley View Terrace, Wilkes-Barre, died Friday at the Betty Dare Good Samaritan Center, Alamogordo.

Born Oct. 8, 1927, in West Nanticoke, she was a daughter of the late Ada Hontz and George Jacoby. She was a graduate of the Shickshinny High School and member of The Apostolic Faith Tabernacle, Orange.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William R., Sr.

Surviving are her sister, Marion Buckler, Virginia; sons, William Jr., Alamogordo; and Paul, Exeter; daughter, Cheryll Culver, Dallas; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Monte Vista Cemetery, Alamogordo. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Apostolic Faith Tabernacle. Memorial donations may be made to the Apostolic Faith Tabernacle for Missionary Work; or to the American Heart Association. Funeral arrangements were by the Sears Alamogordo Funeral Home, Alamogordo.

Ruchinski, John

John S. Ruchinski, 65, of Kirmar Avenue, Wanamie section of Newport Township, died Monday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Wanamie, he was the son of the late John F. and Celia (Kozik) Ruchinski. He was a 1953 graduate of Newport Township High School, owned and operated an auto repair shop in Wanamie and was a truck driver for several trucking companies.

Surviving are his sons, John, David and Anthony, all of Nanticoke; and Chester, Luzerne; nine grandchildren; sister, Theresa Kiewlak, Nanticoke; one niece, three nephews and one great-niece.

The funeral will be held at the discretion of the family. Arrangements will be by the Grontkowski Funeral Home P.C., 51-53 W. Green St., Nanticoke.

Siegel, Eva

Eva R. (Himelstein) Siegel, 77, of Briarwood Circle, Boynton Beach, Fla., formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died Monday in King of Prussia.

Born in Argentina, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Ethel (Buchassey) Himelstein. She attended Wilkes-Barre schools and she and her late husband, Sidney, owned and operated Vogue Shoe Store, Wilkes-Barre, and Binghamton, N.Y. She was a former member of Temple Israel Synagogue, Wilkes-Barre; and other religious and civic organizations.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph and Seymour Himelstein.

Surviving are her daughters, Gail Kelner, Scotch Plains, N.J.; Paula Budin and Joyce Siegel, both of Philadelphia; three grandchildren; sister, Betsy Passikoff, Wilkes-Barre; and companion, Allan Berger, King of Prussia.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today from the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, 348 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre. Rabbi Larry Kaplan will officiate. Interment will be in Workman Circle Cemetery, Shavertown section of Kingston Township.

Born July 4, 1962, in Pittston, he was a son of William Williamscq and Jean (Balchune) Wycallis. He attended Pittston Area High School and was a member of Holy Rosary Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1227, both of Duryea, American Legion Post 477, Pittston, Lithuanian Club, Exeter, and the West Side Club, Avoca.

Surviving are his son, Christopher, Pittston; brother, Albert Wycallis, Duryea; sister, Michele Williams, Avoca; and companion, Kim Minckler.

Blessing Services will be at 9:30 a.m. today at the Howell-Lussi Funeral Home, 509 Wyoming Ave., West Pittston. Memorial Mass will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Holy Rosary Church, Duryea. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Duryea. Friends may call from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Bandish, Albert

Albert Bandish, 75, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died July 30 in Fort Lauderdale.Born Sept. 9, 1924, in Plymouth, he was a son of Ambrose A. and Mary (Palchanis) Bandish. He was in the Class of 1942 at Plymouth High School, but did not graduate until after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was a 1954 graduate of the University of Miami and was a sales representative for cement companies in Southern Florida.

She worked for Pomeroy's Department Stores, Wilkes-Barre, was a member of the American Contract Bridge League, ranked as a national master, and member of Harveys Lake Ceramic Club.
