Theodore Barber
May 21, 2000
Theodore R. Barber of Swoyersville died Sunday at his home.

Born Feb. 28, 1936, he was a son of the late Theodore and Johanna (Mizenko) Barber.

He attended Luzerne High School and was a U.S. Army veteran.

He worked for Friar's Tile Co., Luzerne.

He was a member of Dorrance United Methodist Church, Kingston.

He was preceded in death by brothers James and Richard and sister Stella Broadt.

Surviving are his wife, the former Harriet Fitser; sons, Theodore, Wilkes-Barre; and James, West Pittston; daughters, Beverly Rhodes and Bonnie Amos, both of West Wyoming; Janet Gilroy, Edwardsville; JoAnne Callahan, Exeter; RonieLynn Barber and Suzanne Maizillo, both of West Pittston; and Peggy Sue Surplus, Moosic; sisters, Leona Ryan, Ohio; Lillian Perago and Marie Emel, both of Edwardsville; Jacklyn Perzia, Luzerne; and Cleta Lynn Amos, Kingston; and 21 grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Howell-Lussi Funeral Home, 509 Wyoming Ave., West Pittston.

Sylvia Backley

Sylvia A. (Bloom) Backley, 50, of South Prospect Street, Nanticoke, died Friday at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

Born June 4, 1949, in Nanticoke, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Anna (Rustay) Bloom.

She attended Nanticoke schools.

She worked for the American Tobacco Co.

Surviving are her husband of 32 years, David; sons, David Jr., at home; and Ernest, Cresson; daughter, Lucinda, Shavertown; a grandson; brothers, Harry Bloom Jr., Laceyville; Larry Bloom, Nanticoke; and Wayne Bloom, Glen Lyon; sisters, Celia Jennings and Anna May Backley, both of Nanticoke; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A blessing service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home Inc., 614 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke.

Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

Beatrice Chulick

Beatrice (DeRosa) Chulick, 78, of Rice Township, died Saturday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born March 13, 1922, in Staten Island, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Theresa (Luberto) DeRosa.

She was a seamstress for local clothing manufacturers.

She was a member of St. Jude's Roman Catholic Church, Mountaintop.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; sisters, Mary Clavizzo, Antoinette Stucker and Annie Valituto; brothers, Samuel, Joseph, Rocko and Carmen DeRosa.

Surviving are her brother, Nunzio DeRosa, Staten Island, N.Y.; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from the McCune Funeral Home, 80 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountaintop, with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Jude's Church.

Interment will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Kathleen Norton

Kathleen (Boylan) Norton, 50, of Pittsford, Vt., died May 16 at her home.

Funeral arrangements are pending from the Leo P. Lehman Funeral Home, 689 Hazle Ave., Wilkes-Barre.

Peter Notari
May 20, 2000
Peter Notari, 86, of Old Forge, died Saturday in the Hospice Unit at Mercy Hospital, Scranton, after a brief illness.

Born Sept. 28, 1913, in Old Forge, he was a son of the late Enrico and Teresa (Rosati) Notari.

He was educated in Old Forge schools.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He worked for the Royal Bottling Co., Scranton, and was a butcher at Fumanti's Market and Rossi's Market, Old Forge.

He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church and the American Legion Post 513, both in Old Forge, the American Bowling Congress and the Dante Literary Society of South Scranton. He was a former member of the 20th Ward Social Club, South Scranton. He was former president of the Old Forge Borough Council and the Scranton Times-Tribune Bowling League.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Erminia "Mamie'' Notari, Dosolina "Rose'' Lilli and Angeline Albanesi.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, the former Margaret Bartoli; son, Richard P. Sr., and brother, Orlando, both of Old Forge; three grandsons; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:45 a.m. Thursday from the Victor M. Ferri Funeral Home, 522 Fallon St., Old Forge, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Church.

Entombment will be in Cathedral Cemetery Mausoleum, Scranton.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Louis Ogin

Louis T. Ogin, 49, of Lily Lake, Wapwallopen, formerly of Alden, Newport Township, died Friday at the Berwick Hospital, Berwick.

Born Feb. 17, 1951, in Nanticoke, he was a son of the late Alberta (Kulp) and Ira Ogin Sr.

He attended Newport Township schools.

He was a forklift operator at CertainTeed, Mountaintop.

He was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Dorrance. and the United Auto Workers Local 365.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, William, Ira Jr., Nelson and Eugene.

Surviving are his wife of 24 years, the former Anita Ostrowski; daughter, Monica K. Ogin, at home; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 211 W. Main St., Glen Lyon, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Our Lady Help of Christians Church.

Interment will be in the parish Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. A Christian wake service will be in the afternoon, with the Rev. Mark Balczeniuk officiating.

Stella Zemski

Stella (Trynoski) Zemski, of Robert Street, Sheatown, Newport Township, died Sunday at Mercy Special Care Hospital, Nanticoke.

Born in Newport Township, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Pauline (Gill) Trynoski.

She was a graduate of Newport Township High School and the Carbondale General Hospital School of Nursing.

She was a nurse at Nanticoke State Hospital and the Valley Crest Nursing Home and a private duty nurse in New York.

She was a member of Holy Child Church, Sheatown.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; brothers, Stanley, Charles, Walter, Anthony and Joseph Trynoski; and sisters, Helen Kutz, Lena Kozik, Mary Kowalski and Ceil Massa.

Surviving are her daughter, Diane, at home; son, Charles, Sewell, N.J.; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home, 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in Holy Child Church.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Anna Nork
May 21, 2000
Anna Nork, 91, of West Noble Street, Nanticoke, formerly of the Glen Lyon section of Newport Township, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born May 4, 1909, in Nanticoke, she was a daughter of the late Vavrek and Maria (Veter) Hamersky. She attended Newport Township High School and was a cook for Nanticoke State Hospital. She was a member of St. Adalbert's Tri-parish Church, Glen Lyon, and its Altar and Rosary Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank R.; daughter, Alma A. Tomek; brothers, John, Valentine, Lawrence, Matthew and Philip Hamersky.

Surviving are her sisters, Mary Stavetski and Helen Meshinski, both of Glen Lyon; Monica Pantaleoni, Greenbelt, Md.; and Kathleen Yurkowski, Warminster; four grandsons, seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the George A. Strish, Inc., Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Adalbert's Church. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Carl Prushinski officiating.

Maurice Gittins

Maurice J. Gittins, of Poplar Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Sunday at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

Born Feb. 17, 1923, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late David and Jesse (Myers) Gittins.

He attended GAR Memorial High School, Wilkes-Barre.

He was a plumber for the Lehigh Valley Railroad and for Conrail.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Wilkes-Barre.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward and John.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, the former Doris B. Smith; son, Maurice Jr., Wilkes-Barre; daughters, Millie Kehler and Doris Yurovchak, both of Wilkes-Barre; Dorothy Thomas, Mountaintop; and Debra Jean White, Susquehanna; 10 grandchildren; brothers, David, Maine; and Walter, Wilkes-Barre; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Mamary-Durkin Funeral Home Inc., 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre.

Morris Capute Jr.
May 21, 2000

Morris F. Capute Jr., 53, of Hazle Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, died Sunday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born May 21, 1947, in Nanticoke, he was a son of Frances (Mowery) Capute, Shickshinny, and the late Morris F. Capute Sr.

He was a 1965 graduate of Northwest Area High School.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.

He worked for the Social Security Administration Data Processing Center, Plains Township.

He was a member of St. Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 25 years, the former Betty Brader; son, Morris T., Wilkes-Barre; daughters, Anna Sue Lefkoski, Plains Township; and Zina Marie Capute, Exeter; two grandchildren; sister, Pammy Schuckers, Huntington Mills.

Funeral services will be at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday from the Mayo Funeral Home Inc., 77 N. Main St., Shickshinny.

Interment will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Shickshinny, at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Panetta Flora
May 21, 2000
Panetta (Pasquale) Flora, 78, of Jeanette Street, Mocanaqua, died Sunday at the Berwick Hospital Center after a brief illness.

Born July 31, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Benedict and Antoinette (Pachetti) Pasquale.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry A.; six brothers and a sister.

Surviving are her son, Randall, RR 1, Berwick; daughter, Donnamae Harter, Pond Hill; three grandchildren; sister, Catherine Yacuboski, Glen Lyon.

Funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck.

Helen Vnuk, of Pierce Street, Plymouth, died Monday at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

Born in Plymouth, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Theresa Ropiecki. She attended Plymouth schools and was a member of St. Mary's-St. Stephen's Community, Plymouth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; brother, Joseph Ropiecki; and sisters, Sophie Hart and Frances Ropiecki.

Surviving are her sons, Edward J. and Michael R., both of Plymouth Township; and Joseph D., Hanover Township; six grandchildren; nephews and nieces.

The funeral will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Piszczek Funeral Home, 70 E. Main St., Plymouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Nativity Church, Plymouth. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Plymouth Township. Friends may call from 7:30 a.m. to time of service Wednesday.
