Edward P. Bensavage, 66, of Blytheburn Road, Wright Township, died Saturday at the home of his son, Mark.

Born May 11, 1934, in Hanover Township, he was a son of the late Peter and Anna (Bukavich) Bensavage.

He was a graduate of St. Leo's School, Ashley.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He was a carpenter with the Carpenters Local Union 514, Plains Township, and worked with Bechtel Corp. on the construction of the Susquehanna Steam Electric Power Plant.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Wilkes-Barre, and the Catholic War Veterans Post 274, Ashley.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Agnes Nat; brother, George; and sister, Elizabeth Grieshaber.

Surviving are his son, Mark, Hanover Township; daughters, Rose Marie Malenovich and Renee Girton, both of Hudson; four grandchildren; brothers, John and Leo, both of Hanover Township; and Joseph, Swoyersville; sisters, Eleanor Smijon, Hanover Township; and Mary Dennis, Wilkes-Barre; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, Park Avenue and South Street, Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church, with the Rev. Theodore L. Obaza officiating.

Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Bear Creek.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Frye, Harry
October 13, 2000
Harry Frye, 73, of West 15th Street, Hazleton, died Friday at his home.

Born in McAdoo, he was a son of the late John and Alice (Kelshaw) Frye.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He was a retired sergeant with the Hazleton City Police.

He was a member of St. John's Primitive Methodist Church and the Fraternal Order of Police.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, the former Natalie Kopie; son, Dr. John Frye, Kingston; three granddaughters; sister, Lamora Young, Washington state; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday from the Joseph A. Moran Funeral Home, 229 W. 12th St., Hazleton, with the Rev. Neal Smith officiating.

Interment will be in Jeansville Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hazleton Chapter of the American Cancer Society, c/o St. Gabriel's House, 182 N. Wyoming St., Hazleton, Pa. 18201.

Gizenski, Ida
October 14, 2000
Ida (Jumper) Gizenski, 76, of Second Avenue, Berwick, died Saturday at the Berwick Retirement Village I.

Born July 15, 1924, in Broadway, she was a daughter of the late William and Nell Jumper.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph H.; brothers, Albert, Charles and Clarence Jumper; and sisters, Margaret Steinruck and Esther Franklin.

Surviving are her sons, Alfred H. Sr., Savage Hill, Orangeville; and Joseph E., Berwick; daughter, Joy Ann Smith, Shickshinny; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Warren Jumper, Plymouth; and sister, Sarah Long, Bloomingdale.

Private funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Kelchner-McMichael Funeral Home Inc., 119-121 E. Third St., Berwick, with the Rev. Craig W. Martin of the First Baptist Church of Berwick officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Kozloski, Christopher
October 14, 2000
Christopher John Kozloski, 27, of Norristown, died Saturday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Born Oct. 22, 1972, in Kingston, he was the son of John and Barbara (Kashuba) Kozloski, Falls. He was a 1991 graduate of Scranton Preparatory School and attended the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He was a systems maintenance manager for RCN Corp., Norristown.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his sisters, Linda Byun, Chicago; Dr. Kimberly, Atlanta; Christal, Philadelphia; and Michele, Oley; one nephew; and companion, Pamela Butera, Norristown.

Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday from the Kizis-Lokuta Funeral Home, 134 Church St., Pittston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Harding, Exeter Township. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Harding. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a memorial fund to be established in his memory at Scranton Preparatory School.

Hurwitz, Seymour

Seymour Hurwitz, of Hollywood, Fla., formerly a local attorney, died Sunday in Hollywood, Fla.

Funeral arrangements are pending from the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, 348 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre.

Mickus, Edna
October 14, 2000
Edna Mickus, 80, formerly of Dennison Avenue, Wyoming, died Saturday at Wesley Village, Jenkins Township.

Born Oct. 19, 1919, in Wyoming, she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Anna Mickus.

She worked for General Cigar Co.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Wyoming.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Violet, Helen, Bertha, Mary and Clara; and brothers, John, Paul and Edward.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Bednarski Funeral Home, 168 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church.

Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Exeter.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. until service time Tuesday.

Smith, Janet

Janet A. (Stadulis) Smith, 77, of Brown Street, Ashley, died Sunday morning at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

She was born Aug. 6, 1923, in Sugar Notch. She was a daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes (Pongonis) Stadulis.

She attended Sugar Notch schools.

She was a member of St. Leo's Church, Ashley, and a member of the Cyrenians.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George J. Smith, who died April 28, 1988, and a son, Robert J. Smith, who died April 17, 1977; sisters, Margaret Morris, Joan Moiczek and Mary Keehn; and brothers, John and Joseph.

Surviving are her sons, Gerald J. Smith, Caldwell, N.J.; and George E. Smith, New Milford, N.J.; grandchildren, Steven, Thomas, Michael, Laurie, Deborah, Robert and Gerald Smith Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Lyndsey, Jacqueline, Emily, Madison, Christina, Michelle and Thomas Smith Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Leo's Church.

Interment will be in Calverton National Cemetery, Long Island, N.Y.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Sneeringer, Sister Marie Assumpta
October 14, 2000
Sister Marie Assumpta Sneeringer, of the Dallas Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, died Saturday at Mercy Center, Dallas.

Born Helen Sneeringer on Feb. 28, 1907, in Littlestown, she was a daughter of the late William and Mary (Hemler) Sneeringer.

She was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy, McSherrystown, and earned a bachelor's degree from College Misericordia, Dallas. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1926 and professed her vows in 1929.

She taught in several schools in the Harrisburg Diocese before coming to the Mercy Center's Prayer Ministry.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Clement and George; and sisters, Julia Wieger, Rose Marie Williams and Sister Miriam Joseph Sneeringer, R.S.M.

Surviving is her sister, Frances Long, Littlestown; and several nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Mercy Center.

Transferal to Mercy Center will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, with a wake service at 7 p.m.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial donations may be made to the Retirement Fund, Sisters of Mercy, P.O. Box 369, Dallas, PA. 18612.

Arrangements are by the E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, Wilkes-Barre.

Uhde, Mary
October 15, 2000
Mary M. (Stiger) Uhde, of Steele Street, Hanover Green, Hanover Township, died Sunday at Mercy Special Care Hospital, Nanticoke.

Born Sept. 14, 1908, in Hanover Township, she was a daughter of the late Amasa and Anna (Parry) Stiger.

She attended Hanover Township schools.

She was a member of the Hanover Green Chapel, Hanover Township.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; son, Jack; and brother, Robert.

Surviving are her daughter, Ann Kiever, Raritan, N.J.; son, Gerald, Elizabeth, N.J.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday from the Charles V. Sherbin Funeral Home, 630 Main Road, Hanover Green, Hanover Township, with the Rev. Eugene E. Setzer of the Hanover Green Chapel officiating.

Interment will be in Hanover Green Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Harold C. Vivian, 60, of Abbott Street, Plains Township, died Sunday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of Mary A. (Engle) Vivian, Plains Township, and the late Frederick Earl Vivian.

He attended Plains Township schools.

He worked at Hayes Market, Plains Township.

He was a member of the Miner Congregational United Church of Christ, Miners Mills, Wilkes-Barre, where he served as head usher.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Frederick Earl Jr.; and sister, Dorothy Seeman.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his sister, Nancy Sutkus, Saugerties, N.Y.; and Marilyn P. Vivian, Ashley; brother, James E., Kingston; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Wayne K. Shontz of the Miner Congregational U.C.C. Church officiating.

Interment will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday.

Helen S. Wincek, of Noble Lane, Wilkes-Barre, died Sunday at the inpatient unit of Hospice Community Care, Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Plains Township, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Catherine Wiencek.

She was a graduate of Plains High School.

She worked for Mary MacIntosh Laundry, Wilkes-Barre.

She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church, Plains Township.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Leonard, John, Walter, Joseph and Frank Wincek; and sisters, Julia Voories and Frances Wincek.

Surviving is her son, Richard T. Wiencek, with whom she resided; brothers, Thaddeus and Henry Wincek, both of Plains Township, and George Wincek, Sea Warren, N.J.; sister, Stella Wincek, Plains Township; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday from the John V. Morris-Charles J. Leagus Funeral Home, 281 E. Northampton St., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in SS. Peter & Paul Church, with the Rev. Joseph A. Greskiewicz officiating.

Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Plains Township.

Wynn, Ella

Ella (Moss) Wynn, of North Washington Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Saturday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born June 9, 1911, in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late James Monroe Moss and Bessie Mae Irving.

She was a graduate of Wilkes-Barre schools.

She worked for the Faith Shoe Co., Wilkes-Barre.

She was a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church, Wilkes-Barre; and the R.A.C.E. Team, Wilkes-Barre.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin S.; daughters, Arlene Gregory and Audrey Spence; and brother, Lawrence Moss.

Surviving are her sons, Edward Moss, Alexandria, Va.; Melvin Wynn II, Fredericksburg, Va.; and James E. Wynn, Willingboro, N.J.; daughters, Marianne Janniere, Jamaica, N.Y.; Phyllis Johnson, Mattapan, Mass.; Valaida Randolph, Marlton, N.J.; and Constance Wynn, Wilkes-Barre, with whom she resided; brother, Emerson I. Moss, Wilkes-Barre; 26 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Matthew T. Jacobs Funeral Home Inc., 47 Old River Road, Wilkes-Barre, with a Celebration of Life service at 11 a.m. in Bethel A.M.E. Church, Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. George McMillan officiating and a eulogy by the Right Rev. James E. Wynn.

Interment will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
