Susan Sabol, 76, a resident of Luzerne, died Friday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Feb. 20, 1924, in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Rudolph and Susan Shramko Richards. She was a resident of Luzerne for the past 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; and brother, Jack.

Surviving are her daughter, Suzann Remakus, Larksville; son, Robert, Wilkes-Barre; sisters, Marge Bath, Wilkes-Barre; Mary Kalkun, Michigan; brother, Rudy Richards, Michigan; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews.

Private funeral services will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by the Karl E. Blight Funeral Home, Kingston.

Turner, Elsie

Elsie F. Turner, 82, of East Church Street, Nanticoke, died Saturday at Birchwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Nanticoke, where she was a patient for eight days.

Born Oct. 15, 1918, in Glen Lyon, Newport Township, she was the daughter of the late John and Florence (Gould) Cooper. She resided in Nanticoke most of her life and attended the public schools.

She was last employed at Alta Footwear, Hanover Township, for seven years, retiring in 1983. She was previously employed at the former W.T. Grant Department Store, Dundee section of Hanover Township, for several years and was a waitress at Kearney's Barbeque, Kingston, for 15 years.

She was a member of First Primitive Methodist Church, Nanticoke, where she was active in the church activities.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Turner; brothers, Samuel and William Cooper; sisters, Mildred Smith and Bella Cooper.

Surviving are her sons, Thomas and George Turner, both at home; brother, Gilbert Cooper, Charleston, S.C.; sisters, Florence Marshall, Allentown; Helen Sumba, Philadelphia; Marian Hallas, South Carolina; Ruth Smith, Forty Fort; Isabel Walmer, New Jersey; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. Kyle Gildner, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Shrine Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Memorial donations may be made to First Primitive Methodist Church, c/o the Rev. Kyle Gildner, 101 E. Church St., Nanticoke.

Visentin, Linda
November 18, 2000
Linda Visentin, 93, formerly of London Towers, Ilion, N.Y., died Saturday at Mohawk Valley Nursing Home.

Born July 21, 1907, in Lamon, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Angela Tollardo Cibello. She came to the United States as an infant and attended schools in Starkville and Trinidad, Colo.

She and her family moved to Wilkes-Barre in 1926, where she resided until the early 1990s.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Visentin; three sisters and three brothers.

Surviving are her daughters, Angela Trautlein, Ilion; Marcella Bland, Marlton, N.J.; Frances Milas, Maple Shade, N.J.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Annunciation Church, Ilion. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be in Wilkes-Barre at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Whiter-Hendrix Funeral Home, New York.

Negroni, John
November 15, 2000
John "Jack" Negroni, of Farmington Avenue, Pottstown, and formerly of Nanticoke, died Wednesday at the Pottstown Memorial Medical Center, Pottstown.

Born in Nanticoke, he was the son of the late John and Agnes Krause Negroni. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was employed at Doehler-Jarvis Co., Pottstown, before retiring. He was a member of St. Peter's R.C. Church, Pottstown.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, the former Wanda Racis; daughter, Camille McCardell, Mount Pleasant, S.C.; sisters, Eleanor Josef, Nanticoke; Marie Cunningham, Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home, 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke. Interment was in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Newport Township. Memorial donations may be made to World Child, 9300 Columbia Blvd., Silver Spring, Md., 20910.

Sarah A. Croop, 96, of Bennett Street, Luzerne, died Friday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.Born in Larksville, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Sarah Kelly Anderson and attended Larksville High School.

Joseph M. Buzitsky, of Shoemaker Street, Swoyersville, died Saturday in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Becchetti, Norma Jean

Norma Jean (Reposh) Becchetti, 69, of St. Clair Shores, Mich., formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died Monday at home.

Born April 26, 1931, in Forest City, she was the daughter of the late John and Helen (Blisko) Reposh.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert; and brother, Allen.

Surviving are her son, Wayne, Warren, Mich.; daughter, Theresa Jurczyk, Shelby Township, Mich.; one granddaughter; and brother, Donald, Wilkes-Barre.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church, Jefferson Avenue, St. Clair Shores. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Township, Mich. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Van Lerberghe Funeral Home, St. Clair Shores. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Dennis H. Hillard, of East Montross Road, Tunkhannock, died Monday at the emergency room at Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock.

Born Oct. 20, 1969, in Kingston, he was a son of Donald L., Sr., and Sarah (Gallagher) Hillard, Mehoopany. He was a 1987 graduate of Wyalusing High School and member of the Wyalusing Rams football team. He attended Bradford County Vocational School, Towanda.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife of nine years, Angelia (Paylor) Hillard; son, Andrew Phillip, at home; daughter, Arialle Theresa Elizabeth, at home; brothers, Donald, Jr., Laceyville; and Darren, Meshoppen; sister, Sarah K., Mehoopany; four nephews and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday from the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home Inc., 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, with the Rev. Weldon Hettesheimer and Rev. Daniel J. Herron officiating. Interment will be in Orcutt Cemetery, Noxen. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Kathryn M. (Morris) Lahr, of Crystal Lake Mobile Home Park, Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Graham Avenue, Hanover Township, died Oct. 28 at Tampa General Hospital, Tampa, Fla.

She was a daughter of Marie (Burns) Brenner, Wilkes-Barre, and the late Charles Brenner. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Zephyrhills.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Brenner.

Surviving are her husband, Herbert; sons, Scott Brenner, Waldorf, Md.; and Joseph Morris, Lake Silkworth; daughters, Sharon Honeywell, Moosic; and Marilyn Heiser, Sweet Valley section of Ross Township; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and sisters, Joan Ostrowski, Oakwood Park, Laflin; Marie Beckley, Wyoming; and Carolyn Sweeney, Scranton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, corner of Division and Barney streets, Wilkes-Barre. Monsignor Donald McAndrews will officiate. Interment will follow directly after Mass in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Minnick, Dorothy

Dorothy L. Minnick, 69, of Malden Street, Rochester, N.Y., died Sunday at the Park Ridge Hospital, Rochester, N.Y.

Born in Wilkes-Barre Township, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Elsie (Burns) Sabol. She was a graduate of the former Wilkes-Barre Township High School~. She was a secretary for the Greece Central High School and worked for Allstate Insurance Co., Rochester. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Greece, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Sylvia Sabol; and brother, Joseph.

Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Thomas; brother; Albert, of Endicott, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from the John V. Morris-Charles J. Leagus Funeral Home, 281 E. Northampton St., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Franciscan Friary, Wilkes-Barre Township, with the Rev. Francis M. McHugh, OFM, officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. There will be a Prayer Service conducted Friday evening at the funeral home.

Parry, Claire

Claire (Rogan) Parry, 84, of McKinney, Texas, died Nov. 15.

Born Feb. 15, 1916, in Kingston, she was a daughter of the late Patrick and Clara (Smith) Rogan. She attended Kingston Borough schools and was a 1934 graduate of Kingston High School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; brothers, Leo and Robert; and sisters, Catherine Moran and Mary Roarty.

Surviving are her children, Stephen, McKinney; Fred, Jr., Charlotte, N.C.; and David, San Antonio, Texas; 13 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Speece, Kingston; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held Nov. 16 from St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church, Plano, Texas. Arrangements were by the Ben F. Brown Memorial Funeral Home, Irving, Texas. Burial was in Restland Cemetery, Dallas, Texas.

Shock, Henry

Henry L. Shock, of Riverview Ridge, Wilkes-Barre, formerly of Division Street, Hanover Township, died Tuesday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Feb. 13, 1917, he was a son of the late Henry L. and Mary (Swithers) Shock. He was a welder for Air Products. He was a member of St. Aloysius Church, Wilkes-Barre.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Ethel Jendrick; and brother, James.

Surviving are his sister, Mary Cunningham, Wilkes-Barre; brother, Joseph C., Mountaintop; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday from the Frederick & Snowdon Funeral Home, 617 Carey Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at noon at St. Aloysius Church. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Shoemaker, Gerald

Gerald Robert Shoemaker, 84, of Ashley, formerly of Scranton, died Tuesday at home.

Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Wilson and Leah (Dadey) Shoemaker. He worked for the International Telephone and Telegraph Corp. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Nutley, N.J.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Madelyn Megala; second wife, the former Elizabeth Harris; daughter, Ruth Harris; brothers and sisters.

Surviving are his daughters, Madelyn C. Gilroy, with whom he resided; Carol Vidota, Dunmore; and Elizabeth Yates, Minnesota; sons, Gerald Shoemaker, Scranton; and George Harris, Kentucky; several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild; brothers, Leslie and Gene, both of Scranton; nieces and nephews.

The funeral and committal will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Miller Bean Funeral Home, Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., with services by the Rev. F. Louis Bausch. Interment will be at a later date in the Dunmore Cemetery, Dunmore. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Memorial donations may be made to Hickory Street Baptist Church, 519 Hickory St., Scranton, 18505-1367.

Smith, Edward

Edward R. Smith, 81, of Seventh Avenue, Berwick, formerly of Central Benton, RR 2, former resident of the Bonham Nursing Center, Register, and former patient at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains Township, died Tuesday at the medical center, where he was a patient since Thursday.

Born June 1, 1919, in Fairmount Township, he was a son of the late Patrick and Pearl (Rinus) Smith. He was a construction worker and worked for Wenner Burton Construction, Benton. He was a U.S. Army Infantry veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was a member of Fort Rickett's Post 8317 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Benton.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Helen L. Cole; second wife, the former Anna (Saluta) Malencore; and sisters, Elizabeth Griffith, Lydia and Doretha Jones.

Surviving are his daughter, Josephine Rosencrance, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sons, Llewellyn J. and Robert L., both of Perry, Fla.; stepchildren, Valerie Roman, Benton; Nancy Chappell and Phillip Malencore, both of Berwick; and Jackie Gero, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 11 stepgrandchildren, numerous stepgreat-grandchildren; brother, Robert, Larksville; and sisters, Emma Eckert, Edgewater, N.Y.; and Violetta Carr, Courtdale.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home, Benton, with the Rev. Howard W. Leh officiating. Interment will be in St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Sugarloaf Township. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.

James J. Shea, of Solomon's Creek, Ashley, died Tuesday at the Hospice Community Care of Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Sapser, Thomas

Thomas R. Sapser, 83, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Nov. 15 at St. Anthony's Hospital, St. Petersburg.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre. He was a corrections officer in Dallas and was a security guard for the St. Petersburg Times. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a two-term commander of the American Legion and president of the Century Club, both of Dallas. He was honored by a World War II memorial in New Orleans.

Surviving are his sons, Thomas M., Laflin; and James M., Daphne, Ala.; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements were by the Royal Palm Funeral Chapel & Cemetery, 2600 Gandy Blvd., North St. Petersburg.

Turner, Bette

Bette (Dorsey) Turner, 78, of Newport News, Va., formerly of Dallas, died Sunday at Riverside Regional Convalescent Center, Newport News.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Ina (Orum) and Lewis MacFarland Dorsey. She was a graduate of the Germantown High School and attended the academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. She was a writer and a songstress and authored "The Story Behind the Park" the story of Frances Slocum.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert E., III.

Surviving are her sons, Paul N., Germany; and Clark S., California; daughters, Betsy Anderson, Newport News; and Marianne Holehan, Tunkhannock; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one great great-granddaughter; and sister, Jean Walters, Cape May, N.J.

A Memorial Service will be held in Newport News. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hoyt Library, Kingston. Arrangements were by the Cremation Society of Virginia, Tidewater Office, 5265 Providence Road, Suite 400, Virginia Beach, Va.

Lenkiewicz, Joseph

Joseph A. Lenkiewicz, of West Union Street, Nanticoke, formerly of Warrior Run, died Monday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Nanticoke, he was the son of the late Joseph and Laura (Ziomek) Lenkiewicz. He was a 1948 graduate of Warrior Run High School. He was a machinist for Foster-Wheeler Corp., Mountaintop. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Holy Family Church, Sugar Notch, and Twin-Borough Lions Club, Sugar Notch and Warrior Run. He was a member, post commander and service officer of American Legion Post 176, Warrior Run, and secretary of the United Citizen's Club, Hanover section of Nanticoke.

Surviving are his wife, the former Pauline K. Brozusky; sons, Joseph A., Plymouth; and John J., Plains Township; two grandchildren, and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church. Entombment will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Members of American Legion Post 176 are asked to meet at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for services for their fallen comrade. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holy Family Church Building Fund, 828 Main St., Sugar Notch, 18706.

Kalinka, Frances

Frances Kalinka, 74, of Cist Street, Buttonwood section of Hanover Township, died Tuesday at the Mercy Hospice at Mercy Hospital, Scranton.

Born Dec. 14, 1925, in Hanover Township, she was a daughter of the late Joan and Fenna Soboleski. She attended Hanover Township schools. She worked for the Hanover Area School District. She was a member of Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church, Buttonwood.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis F.; brothers, Peter, John and Michael; and sisters, Ann and Katherine.

Surviving are her daughter, Deborah Galacci, Clarks Summit; son, James, Brooklyn, N.Y.; one granddaughter; and sister, Helen Macijczak, Ashley.

The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from the Charles V. Sherbin Funeral Home, 630 Main Road, Hanover Green section of Hanover Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Exaltation of the Holy Cross Church. Interment will be in Hanover Green Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. There will be a Christian wake service Friday evening, with the Rev. James E. McGahagan officiating.
