Stella M. Grout, formerly of Nanticoke Towers, passed away Sunday at Birchwood Nursing Center, Nanticoke.

Surviving are a son, James L., Pond Hill; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and five great great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. from the Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home, 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Francis Church, Nanticoke. Interment will be at Stairville Cemetery, Dorrance Township. Friends may call from Tuesday, 6 to 9 p.m.

Janson, Walter
Jan. 7, 2001

Walter G. Janson, of Meshoppen, died Sunday at Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock.

Born March 31, 1913, in Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of the late Carl and Hedda Janson. He was a retired U.S. Custom's agent. He was a Boy Scout Leader, Troop 146, New Monmouth, N.J., and member of the National Rifle Association and Federal Employees Union.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret R. (McCoy) Janson; sons, Dr. Kenneth G., Eighty-four; and Robert G., Washington, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home Inc., 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, with the Rev. Gary Myers officiating. Interment will be in Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale, N.Y., at the convenience of the family. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. this evening.

McGinty, Nora
Jan. 7, 2001

Nora M. McGinty, 81, of Main Street, Sugar Notch, died Sunday at home.

Born Jan. 25, 1919, in Sugar Notch, she was a daughter of the late Hugh and Catherine (Reilly) McGinty. She worked for the federal government in Washington, D.C., Harrisburg and Tobyhanna. She was a member of St. Charles Church, Sugar Notch.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Anthony, Peter and Hugh; and sisters, Margaret Hummer, Grace and Catherine McGinty.

Surviving are her nephews, Hugh Hummer, with whom she resided; and Francis Hummer, Newtown section of Hanover Township; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

A Blessing Service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley. Interment will be in St. Charles Cemetery, Sugar Notch, in the family plot. There will be no calling hours.

Nolan, Gertrude

Gertrude K. Nolan, of Dallas, formerly of Erie, died Friday at Mercy Center, Dallas, where she was a guest for the past four years.

Surviving are her daughter, Dr. Kathleen Nolan, Dallas; two grandsons; sisters; one brother; and several nieces and nephews.

A Prayer Service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Mercy Center Chapel, Lake Street, Dallas. Friends may call from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Mercy Center Chapel. Funeral and burial arrangements will be held in Erie. Local arrangements are by the Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home, Shavertown section of Kingston Township.

Diane LaBar, 52, of Liberty Street, West Pittston, died Monday at Hospice Community Care, Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of Russell and Shirley Miller, Philadelphia. She was a graduate of Olney High School, Philadelphia. She was a traffic manager at Lehigh Valley Coal Sales, West Pittston, and a certified nurses assistant at Wesley Village.

Meineker, Nancy

Nancy (Nealon) Meineker, 79, of Cook Street, Ashley, and Queens section of Brooklyn, N.Y., died Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.Born March 15, 1921, in Ashley, she was a daughter of the late Patrick and Catherine (Bradshaw) Nealon. She was a 1939 graduate of St. Leo's High School. She was a final examiner for the I. Miller Shoe Co., Long Island, N.Y., supervisor for the Andrew Geller Shoe Co., Wilkes-Barre, and assembler/tester and machine operator for RCA Corp., Mountaintop.

Rychleski, Florence

Florence J. Rychleski, of Old Forge, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Scranton.

Born in Old Forge, she was a daughter of the late Leon and Florence (Chojnowski) Rychleski. She was a 1938 graduate of the Old Forge High School and graduate of College Misericordia and the Pittston Hospital School of Nursing, where she was a nursing supervisor. She worked for the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Polish National Catholic Cathedral, Scranton.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Clemencecq.

Surviving are her sister, Honoracq Matechak, with whom she resided.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Palermo and Zawacki Funeral Home Inc., 409 N. Main St., Old Forge, with Mass at 11:45 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Polish National Catholic Cathedral. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Minooka. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to St. Stanislaus Polish National Cathedral or the donor's favorite charity.

Edward T. Reed, 65, of Harding, formerly of Kingston and Exeter, died Monday at his home.

August J. Reatini, 79, of Wilkes-Barre, died Sunday at Summit Health Care Center, Wilkes-Barre.

Born Aug. 19, 1921, in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Ermeto and Grace (Pietrafesa) Reatini. He attended Wilkes-Barre schools and was a 1938 graduate of Coughlin High School. He owned and operated The Heights food market, Wilkes-Barre. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Mary's Church of the Immaculate Conception, Wilkes-Barre, Italian American War Veterans.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine; and son, Joseph.

Surviving are his son, Frank, Mountaintop; one grandson; and sisters, Helen Moharter and Mary Ciavarella, both of Florida.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Desiderio Funeral Home, 436 S. Mountain Blvd., Route 309, Mountaintop, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary Church of the Immaculate Conception, Wilkes-Barre. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cerebral Palsy; or Spina Bifida foundations.

Schifano, Susan

Susan Schifano, 81, of Pittston, died Sunday at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

Born March 23, 1919, in Pittston, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Ann (Guilterra) Natalie. She was a member of St. Rocco's Roman Catholic Church and the Montedoro Society, both of Pittston, and the Big Band Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Louis, Al and Joseph Natalie.

Surviving are her husband, Charles; daughters, Patricia Freeman, Chattanooga, Tenn.; and Charlene King, Duryea; one granddaughter; sister, Minnie Russo, Erie; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Graziano Funeral Home, 700 Pittston Blvd., Pittston Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Rocco's Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Rocco's Cemetery, Pittston Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Strok, Walter

Walter V. Strok, formerly of Church Street, Old Forge, died Sunday at the VNA Inpatient Unit at Community Medical Center, Scranton.

Born Jan. 13, 1914, in Scranton, he was a son of the late Alexander and Anastasia (Zebrun) Strok. He attended Old Forge schools. He worked for the former Brooks Manufacturing and the former Renna Dairy, both of Old Forge. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he received the American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Ribbon. He was a member of St. Michael's Russian Orthodox Church, Old Forge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Dorothy L. Stephenson; sister, Vera Kearney; and brothers, Alexander, Anthony and Michael.

Surviving are his sister, Anna Strok, Old Forge; brothers, Dimitri, Old Forge; and Joseph, Moosic; care giver, Lois Lepore, Exeter; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St., Taylor, with funeral services by the Rev. David Mahaffey officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday. Memorial donations may be made to St. Michael's Russian Orthodox Church, 512 Summer St., Old Forge, 18518.

Wasil, Nicholas

Nicholas G. Wasil, of North Washington Street, Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Michael and Anna (Sologovitch) Wasil. He attended the Wilkes-Barre Area schools. He worked for Eidam Cadillac, Kingston, and Lehigh Valley Coal Co. at Dorrance Colliery. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Wilkes-Barre. He was a member and secretary-treasurer of the local union of the United Mine Workers of America.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Wasil; and brothers, James, Michael and Andrew.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, the former Pearl Trabish; daughter, Nickalene W. Dobranski, Meshoppen; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brother, George, Wilkes-Barre; sister, Ann Rahl, Luzerne; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services with Panachida will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday from the John V. Morris Funeral Home, 625 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. James G. Hayer officiating, with Office of Christian Burial with Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, 695 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Joseph M. Kakalec, SJ, officiating. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Dallas. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. There will be a Parastas Service at 2:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, with the Rev. Joseph M. Kakalec, SJ, officiating.

Barna, Mary Ann

Mary Ann Barna, 85, formerly of Main Street, Sugar Notch, died Monday at Smith Health Care Ltd., Mountaintop.

Born Aug. 15, 1915, in Sugar Notch, she was a daughter of the late Stanley A. and Stefania Chmielewski. She attended the Sugar Notch schools. She was a member of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Sugar Notch.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael, Sr.; sons, Leonard and Michael, Jr.; brothers, Stanley and Joseph Chmielewski; and sister, Viola Chmielewski.

Surviving are her sister, Charlotte, Sugar Notch; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from the George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Pryce, James
Jan. 9, 2001

James A. "Red" Pryce, 83, of East Green Street, Nanticoke, died Tuesday at Valley Crest, Plains Township, where he was a patient for three years.

Born April 1, 1917, in Paterson, N.J., he was the son of the late Leroy and Mary Jane (Jones) Pryce. He was a 1935 graduate of Nanticoke High School. He was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, Nanticoke. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater of operations. He attained the rank of sergeant and received the Purple Heart Medal. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Nanticoke, American Legion Post 350, Stickney Fire Co., Quoit Club and 400 Club, all of Nanticoke, and the National Association of Retired Letter Carriers.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, the former Alfreda "Fritz" Szatkowski.

Surviving are his sons, James C., Arbutus, Md.; and Lee, Wyndmoor; four grandchildren; sisters, Lillian Davenport, a patient at Valley Crest; Rose Sharpe and Jean Duncan, both of Nanticoke; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Friday from the Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church. The Rev. William J.P. Langan will officiate. Interment will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. There will be a recitation of the Rosary by Rev. William J. P. Langan at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Radaszewski, Josephine

Josephine Radaszewski, formerly of Stanton Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at Davis Manor, Mountaintop.

Born Jan. 17, 1909, in Wilkes-Barre Township, she was a daughter of the late Martin and Agnes (Nalepa) Polny. She attended Wilkes-Barre Township schools. She and her husband, Frank, owned and operated Frank's Cafe, Stanton Street, Wilkes-Barre. She was a member of St. Mary's Church of the Maternity, Wilkes-Barre.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; brothers, John, Joseph, Leo, Michael, Francis and Stanley; and sisters, Anne Bensavage and Mary Leggett.

Surviving are her sons, Frank, Wilkes-Barre; Raymond, Morris Plains, N.J.; and David, Allentown; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and brother, Anthony, Wilkes-Barre.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the Jendrzejewski Funeral Home, 21 N. Meade St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church of the Maternity. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, West Wyoming. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Helen A. (Woehrle) Laskowski, formerly of the Glen Lyon section of Newport Township, died Sunday at Northwest Medical Center, Franklin.

Born in Newport Township, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Elizabeth (Butchko) Barron. She worked at Retreat State Hospital and Leslie Fay, Glen Lyon. She was a member of St. Adalbert's Church, Glen Lyon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore.

Surviving are her daughters, Charlene Bolinski, Alexandria, Va.; and Carol Czajkowski, Glen Lyon; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Howell, Sheatown section of Newport Township; and brothers, Paul J. Barron, Nanticoke; and Andrew Barron, New Cumberland.

The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home, 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Adalbert's Church. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Glen Lyon. Friends may call from 8 a.m. until time of funeral Friday.

Sudol, John

John S. Sudol, 60, of Dupont, died Monday at Mercy Hospital, Scranton.

Born Dec. 11, 1940, in Dupont, he was the son of the late John S., Sr. and Helen (Soroka) Sudol. He was a graduate of Dupont High School and attended Penn State University. He worked for the Tobyhanna Army Depot and Hertz car rental, Avoca. He was a U.S. Army Reserves veteran. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Dupont, Dupont Polish Club, Dupont Hose Co., Dupont Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Dupont Zoning Board. He was a member and president of the Dupont Lions Club, two-time Lion of the year and was just awarded the presidential citation award of the Lions Club. He was also a social member of the West Side Social Club, Avoca.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years, the former Mary Ann (Borovitz) Sudol; sons, John, Kevin and Mark, all at home; daughter, Karen Sudol, Dupont; sister, Theresa Rebinski, Hackettstown, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home, 728 Main St., Avoca, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. The Rev. Joseph Verespy will officiate. Interment will be in the parish Cemetery, Dupont. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
