Edward L. "Eddy" Wood, 68, of Kingston, formerly of the Heights section of Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born Feb. 1, 1932, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Charles and Ruth (Farrell) Wood. He attended St. Ann's Academy, was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, Wilkes-Barre, and earned a bachelor's degree from King's College in 1956. He was a personal insurance agent and sold plumbing equipment with R.J. Walker, Wilkes-Barre. He served eight years in the U.S. Navy Reserve.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Robert; and sisters, Sister Helena (Mary Ruth) and Katherine Hubbs.
Surviving are his wife, the former Kathleen Smith; sons, Ned and Joe, both of Kingston; and Pat, Crystal Lake, Ill.; daughters, Kate Gardner, San Jose, Calif.; Liza Sproat, Admore; Molly Kanor, Forty Fort; and Anne Wood Trott, Austin, Texas; 12 grandchildren; brother, William F.L.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Friday from the McLaughlin Funeral Service, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church Of The Immaculate Conception, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Albert Brown Sr., 86, of South Hanover Street, Nanticoke, died Monday at the Birchwood Nursing Center, Nanticoke.
Born Oct. 12, 1914, in Nanticoke, he was a son of the late Frederick and Emily (Thorne) Brown. He attended the Nanticoke public schools. He worked for the local coal mines and the City of Nanticoke and was a medical aid at Retreat State Hospital. He was a member of the Primitive Methodist Church, Nanticoke.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, the former Viola Matulewski; grandson, John Levanda; great-grandson, Aaron Levanda; brothers, Fred, Henry, Charles, John, Bill and Tom; and sisters, Elizabeth, Lillian and Anne.
Surviving are his daughters, Dorothy Crouse, Berwick; Elizabeth Bobbin, Nanticoke; Ruth Levanda, Korn Krest section of Hanover Township; Viola Shemanski, Jacqueline Koslowski and Lillian Dewald, all of Nanticoke; sons, Albert, Jr. and William, both of Nanticoke; 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Scalia, Elmira, N.Y.; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday from the Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home Inc., 614 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. Kyle Gildner officiating. Interment will be in the Nanticoke Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Julius Alpine, 94, of Applewood Estates, Freehold, N.J., died Sunday at Centra-State Medical Center, Freehold.
Born 1906, in Albany, N.Y., he was a son of the late Morris and Sarah Alpine. He was a graduate of South Amboy High School and was trained as a draftsman. He was a merchant in Keyport, N.J., where he owned and operated Alpine's Department Store. He participated in a variety of civic and community activities, including serving as president of the Keyport Kiwanis Club and Keyport Businessmen's Association.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Bertha; twin brother, Perry; brother, Jay; and sisters, Clara Marinbach, Ethel Semer and Leonore Gutkin.
Surviving are his daughter, Judith Newman, Kingston; two grandsons; and sister, Cele Spelman, Florida.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Bloomfield-Cooper Funeral Home, Manalapan, N.J., with Cantor Wayne Seit officiating. Shiva will be observed from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the home of his daughter, 125 James St., Kingston.

Ellen Bobrowski, 88, of the Harding section Exeter Township, died Tuesday at her home.
Born in Duryea, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Kosloski) Yudeski. She was a graduate of Duryea High School. She worked for Revlon in New Jersey. She was a member of the Church of the Holy Redeemer, Harding.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, John; daughter, Joanne Bobrowski; brothers, Joseph and Bernard Laibinis; and sister, Eleanor Woycak.
Surviving are her son, John, Edison, N.J.; daughter, Ellen Siecinski, Bradenton, Fla.; two grandsons, three great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Bonner, Scranton; nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday at a time to be announced from the Bernard J. Piontek Funeral Home Inc., 204 Main St., Duryea, with a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Holy Redeemer. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Harding. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Margaret E. Chakon, 86, of Wrightsville, formerly of Larksville, died Tuesday at the Lancaster Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 31, 1914, in Larksville, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Catherine (Toporcer) Tomek. She was a retail clerk at the former Wayne Department Store, Edwardsville. She was a member of St. Steven's Roman Catholic Church, Plymouth.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael S.
Surviving are her daughter, Margaret Shomper, with whom she resided in Wrightsville; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
A Memorial Service will be held at the convenience of the family, following cremation. Interment will be in St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Lehman. Arrangements are by the Etzweiler Funeral Home Inc., 700 Hellam St., Wrightsville.

John R. Ellsworth, 51, of Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at his home.
Born Nov. 2, 1949, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late George M., Jr. and Alice Louise (Isenberg) Ellsworth. He was a graduate of Kingston High School. He worked at Kingston Metal Specialty Co., Luzerne.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Martha Jean Blecher and Agnes Pardini; and brother, William.
Surviving are his sister, Isabelle Erwine, Luzerne; brother, George M., III, Wilkes-Barre; nieces and nephews.

John W. Frederick Sr., 80, of Walnut Street, Forty Fort, died Tuesday at Manorcare Health Services, Kingston.
Born Sept. 26, 1920, in the Georgetown section of Wilkes-Barre Township, he was a son of the late Oscar and Sarah (Lesley) Frederick. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Hedwig's Church.
He was preceded in death by his brother, William; and sister, Elizabeth Lewis.
Surviving are his wife, Betty; son, John, Jr., Forty Fort; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and sister, Arlene Stremus, Wilkes-Barre.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Straub Kane Funeral Home, 55 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre. There will be no calling hours.

Charlotte French, 89, of Wilkes-Barre, a resident of Mercy Center Personal Care Unit, Dallas, since 1998, died Sunday at Mercy Center Nursing Unit, Dallas.
Born Nov. 19, 1911, in the North End section of Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Francis and Charlotte (Castle) Cavan. She was a 1929 graduate of St. Mary's High School, Wilkes-Barre, and a 1933 graduate of College Misericordia, Dallas Township, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English. She was a worker efficiency reviewer for the National Labor Relations Board in Luzerne County. She was a member of St. Mary's Church of the Immaculate Conception, Wilkes-Barre, member and president of the former Wyoming Valley Hospital Auxiliary, member and vice president of the League of Women Voters.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. Peter Casterline; second husband, Robert French; sisters, Agnes Brennan and Matilda McHugh; and brothers, Frank, Donald, Edward, and Dr. John Cavan.
Surviving are her daughters, Charlotte Filip, Shavertown section of Kingston Township; Linda Haggerty, Bethlehem; Corine Fitzpatrick, Ph.D., New York City; five grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Gold, Dr. Mervin

Dr. Mervin M. Gold, 83, of North Dawes Avenue, Kingston, died Tuesday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born June 6, 1917, in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna (Brader) Gold. He was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, Franklin School of Science and Arts, Philadelphia, and the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, where he was a member and president of Phi Alpha Pi Fraternity. He received pre-medical education at Bucknell Junior College, Wilkes-Barre, and St. Thomas College, Scranton, and completed postgraduate studies at the University of Calcutta, India, under auspices of the USAFI program. His degrees include doctor of podiatric medicine and doctor of medical technology.
He was the founder and director of the Wilkes-Barre Clinical Laboratory and chief of the Podiatry Clinic at the former Retreat State Hospital. He was a part-time staff member and consultant at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains Township, consultant and coordinator of its Podiatry section of the Department of Surgery. He was a member of the medical staff of the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital Campus of Wyoming Valley Health Care System. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the China-Burma-India Theater.
He was a life member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and Pennsylvania Podiatric Medical Association, president of the Luzerne County Podiatric Medical Association, member of CBI Veterans Association, Wilkes-Barre Lodge No. 109, BPO Elks, Fidelity Lodge 655, Free and Accepted Masons, Keystone Consistory and Irem Temple, and president of Irem Temple Chanters. He also was a member of Greater Wilkes-Barre Shrine Club, Jewish Community Center and Temple B'nai B'rith, Kingston.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Annette D. (Shalette); and sister, Bertha Levey.
Surviving are his daughters, Jillian Schonfeld, Allentown; Shelley J. Gold, Houston; and Ann H. Gold, Cheektowaga, N.Y.; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday from the Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, 348 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre, with Cantor Kevin Wartell officiating. Interment will be in B'nai B'rith Cemetery, Hanover Township. Shiva will be observed from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the family home at 122 N. Dawes Ave., Kingston.

Virginia Elizabeth (Bartlett) Harding, of Fort Collins, Colo., and resident of Good Samaritan Retirement Village, Fort Collins, since April, 1998, formerly of Eatonville Township, died Tuesday in Fort Collins.
Born April 19, 1913, in Great Falls, Mont., she was a daughter of the late Howard Andrew, Sr. and Effie (Jacoby) Bartlett. She attended the University of Denver and Highland School of Nursing, Oakland, Calif. Her nursing career included Denver General Hospital and the Veterans Administration Hospital, Boise, Idaho. She was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a nurse in the South Pacific Theater, achieving the rank of first lieutenant. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fort Collins.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Howard A., Jr., John J. and Thomas J. Bartlett; and sisters, Mary Bartlett Ferguson and June Bartlett Burdg.
Surviving are her brother, Robert F. Bartlett; and numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.
A Memorial Service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Good Samaritan Retirement Village, Fort Collins. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1005 Stover St., Fort Collins; Good Samaritan Retirement Village, 508 West Trilby, Fort Collins; or the charity of the donor's choice.

Donald R. James, 57, of Briarwood Drive, Chase, Jackson Township, died Wednesday at the family home.
Born June 21, 1943, in Warrior Run, he was the son of May (Mahle) James, Harrisburg, and the late I. Donald James. He was a graduate of Hanover High School and attended classes at Penn State University, Lehman. He was an assistant superintendent of Nyleve Bridge Corp., foreman for the Koon Construction Co. and a certified concrete field testing technician. He was a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard. He was a member of the Local 158 Labor Union and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Lake Silkworth.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife of 36 years, the former Eleanor Herman; sons, Brian, Sweet Valley section of Ross Township; and Donny, at home; two grandsons; sisters, Mary Hartwigsen and Judi Depew, both of Harrisburg; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday from the S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 W. Main St., Plymouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Interment will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Lehman. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. this evening. Andrew Kovalik, 65, of Dupont Avenue South, Richfield, Minn., died Dec. 28 in Minnesota.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Mary and John Uagvarsky.
He worked for Honeywell in Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, John, Michael and George; and sisters, Leona Quarteroni and Irene Kovalik.
Surviving are his wife, Grace; children, Julia Goodhue, David, Robert and Stephen, all of Minnesota; five grandchildren; sisters, Emily Kovalik, Anne Ulihanick and Mary Gonska, all of Wilkes-Barre; and brother, Joseph, Wilkes-Barre Township.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held in the Assumption Catholic Church, Richfield. Interment was in the Assumption Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Morris-Nilsen Funeral Chapel, Richfield.

Helen Medura, 85, formerly of Plymouth and New Jersey, died Monday at Underwood Hospital, Woodbury, N.J.
Born Dec. 20, 1915, in Plymouth, she was a daughter of the late George and Anastasia (Capek) Capyk. She was a graduate of Plymouth High School. She worked at the Citizens Club, Nanticoke. She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church and Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Plymouth, and Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Shawnee Post 463.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, S.; son, Edward; daughter, Helen Demchak; brother, Wasil Capek; and sisters, Anna Bolinski, Mary Ruffley, Ella Gushock and Katie Capek.
Surviving are her daughter, Beverly Garrison, Sicklerville, N.J.; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sisters, Madeline Zoszak, Plymouth; and Sophie Kotch, Plymouth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday from the S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 W. Main St., Plymouth, with a Divine Liturgy at 10:30 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church.
