Hazel M. Magargle, 74, of 1397 Princeton Avenue died Thursday, August 10, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. Her husband, Howard C. Magargle, died November 29, 1988. She was a member of Christian Church. Born October 25, 1925, in Linden, she was a daughter of Gus and Letha Bower Mahaffey. Surviving are two sons, Byron L. of Cogan Station and Garry L. at home; two daughters, Nancy J. Hertzler of Mechanicsburg and Norma L. Harrison of this city; three sisters, Marie Miller of Linden, Merna Meisel of Cogan Station, and Verla Stroble of Jersey Shore; 13 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Melvin L., and two sisters, Betty Griffith and Grace Sanders. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the church, 5904 Lycoming Creek Road, Cogan Station, with Pastor Harry R. (Bud) Yoder, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in State Road Cemetery. Elijah T. Patterson
Elijah T. Patterson, 3 months, of 949 Vine Ave, died Thursday, August 3, 2000, in Geisenger Medical Center, Danville. He attended Ebenezer Baptist Church. Born in this city, April 28, he was a son of Janaea K. Patterson. Surviving, besides his mother of this city, are a brother, Antonio Patterson of this city; maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Patterson Byrd of Philadelphia; and maternal great-grandparents, Jacob and Frances McBride of Philadelphia. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the church, 527 Park Ave with the Rev. Charles Daniels officiating. A private burial will be at the convenience of the family. Edna S. Phillips
Edna S. Phillips, 88, formerly of Hughesville, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, in the Williamsport Hospital emergency room. She had been a resident of Valley View Nursing Center. She was the widow of Hiram D. Phillips.She was a housewife. She was a member of Moreland Community Church. Born Feb. 29, 1912, in Muncy, she was a daughter of Norman and Ocie Remsnyder Hill. Surviving are a son, Hiram N. of Hughesville; a sister, Anna Watson of Montoursville; two grandsons, and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be announced. Arrangements are being handled by Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St.
Stephen P. Renock
WATSONTOWN - Stephen P. Renock, 73, formerly of Elm Street, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at Kramm Healthcare Center, Milton, where he had been a resident since 1998. Retired, he had been a member of the Pennsylvania State Police for 27 years. A member of Knight of Columbus, he held third and fourth degrees, was faithful navigator and financial secretary. He was a member of West Branch Volunteer Fire Co.; Watsontown Civil Service and Recycling committees; Northumberland County 911 Committee; Board of Assistance; Republican Committee, Cruiserman Association; Central Pennsylvania and Susquehanna Health Management Systems agencys; Bucknell Bison Club; Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees; American Association of State Troopers; Retired State Police Association, and Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 49. He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1949 and was a member of the U.S.S. Des Moines Reunion Committee, where he served as secretary/treasurer; the Sampson War Veterans, and Watsontown American Legion. He earned the World War II Victory, American Theater, Asiatic Pacific and Navy Occupation medals. He was a 1945 graduate of Fell Township High School, Simpson. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, an usher and on the advisory board. Surviving are two sons, Stephen P. IV of Spring Green, Wis. and Robert M. of Evansville, Ind.; three daughters, Teresa A. Hill of Bluffton, Ohio, Susan K. Wilt of Lamar and Marie R. of Toledo, Ohio; former wife, Lena A. Zaccheo of Lewisburg; a sister, Ann S. Shino of Richmondvale; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 21 in the church, Broadway Street, Milton, with the Rev. Thomas A. Seata, as celebrant. Burial will be in Warsontown Cemetery, with military honors accorded by Watsontown and Turbotville veterans associations. Kyle Richardson
WELLSBORO - Kyle Richardson, 18, of Middlebury Center RR 2 died Thursday Aug. 10, 2000, in Delmar Township. A 2000 graduate of Wellsboro High School, he played center and tackle on the football team and planned to attend Lock Haven University in the fall. He enjoyed hunting, riding 4-wheelers and water skiing. Born June 21, 1982, in Wellsboro, he was a son of Ellsworth R. and Wynnette R. Tower Richardson. Surviving, besides his parents, are a brother, Jeremy of Middlebury Center; paternal grandmother and step grandfather, Henry and Delores Niles of Wellsboro; and maternal grandmother, Maru Tower of Wellsboro. He was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Robert Richardson, and maternal grandfather, Herbert Tower. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, at Tussey-Mosher’s, 149 Main St., with the Rev. Dr. Robert K. Greer, First Presbyterian Church of Wellsboro, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Holiday, Middlebury Township. CANTON - Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Spacek, 85, a borough native, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at McCallum Manor. Her husband, Herman Spacek, died in January 1980. She had most recently been employed as a writer for the Canton Independent-Sentinel. She attended schools here. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, its rosary and altar societies. She enjoyed cooking and making peanut butter fudge. Born here March 10, 1915, she was a daughter of James T. and Mary Rockwell Wynne. Surviving are a brother, James A. Wynne of DuBois and a sister, Margaret Williams of Albuquerque, N.M. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John M. and Francis Wynne. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the church, here. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery. Friends may call at Morse and Kleese’s, 40 N. Aldas L. “Pete” Carpenter Sr., 84, of 6200 S. Route 220 Highway, Linden, died Friday, Aug 11, 2000, at Manor Care Health Services. He and his wife, the former Helen Doebler, observed their 33rd wedding anniversary June 23. He was an inspector for Textron Lycoming for 28 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a life member of Woodward Township Fire Co. He enjoyed farming. Born March 26, 1916, in Linden, he was a son of William and Florence Waltz Carpenter. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Patricia Lehman of Oriole and Pamela Meixel; two sons, Aldas Jr. of Rauchtown and Franklin of Jersey Shore; two sisters, Ruth Smith and Bertha Palmeter, both of Linden; a brother, William F. of Linden; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, John; and two sisters, Marintha Wagner and Ethel Knauss. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Sander’s, 821 Diamond St., with the Rev. Lucy I. Curchoe Dietrick
Lucy I. Curchoe Dietrick, 89, of 1409 Hepburn St. died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000. She and her husband, Harry A. Dietrick, observed their 66th wedding anniversary June 16. She was co-founder of Curchoe’s food stores with her mother and three brothers. They opened their first store in the 1930s and she retired in 1982 when the last of the markets were sold. She was a volunteer at Divine Providence Hospital. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Senior Citizens group. A member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, she was a past member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court of Our Lady of Victory 532. Born Sept. 4, 1910, in this city, she was a daughter of Royal S. and Josephine Cosentine-Donato Curchoe. Surviving, besides her husband, are four daughters, Carol J. Sortman and Joan J. Sortman, both of this city, Dr. Lucille A. of Cleveland, Tenn. and Debbie D. Anthony of Northampton; two sons, Harry A. Jr. of this city and Louis R. of Tucson, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph F.; an infant grandson; four brothers, Ernest F. Eugene A., Carl A. and Lawrence S. Curchoe; and two sisters, Rose and Adaline. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, in the church, 326 Washington Blvd., with Msgr. Stephen D. Mildred C. Fox, 83, formerly of Mackeyville, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000 at Mayfair Valley Retirement Center, Columbus, Ohio. Her husband Thomas A. Fox died Dec. 18, 1994. She was a homemaker. Born Oct. 9, 1916, in Mackeyville, she was a daughter of James T. and Carrie Jones Walizer. Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Funt of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Nellie Hayes of Mingoville; two brothers, Harry Walizer of Zion and Grant Walizer of Nazareth; and two grandchildren. Robert Dale Harris Sr., 59, of HCR 80, Lock Haven, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Walton Medical Center, Monroe, Ga. He and his wife, the former Jennette J. Maines, observed their 41st wedding anniversary Jan. 24. He was employed by Reese Lumber for 20 years and American Lumber for 10 years. Born March 27, 1941, in this city, he was a son of Donald C. and Edna R. Ott Harris. Surviving, besides his wife, are four daughters, Betty R. Getgen of Jersey Shore, Robin K. Krape of Avis, Donna J. of Monroe and Lisa M. Douberman of Lock Haven; a son Robert Jr. of this city; a sister, Evelyn Baney of Lock Haven; a brother, Donald of Loganton; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Glenn C Limbaugh
MILTON - Glenn C. Limbaugh, 87, of Milton RR 2, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. His wife, the former Evelyn Bastian, died in July of 1997. He retired as owner and operator of the former Limbaugh Bakery, C&L Restaurant and was a partner of Timms Bakery Co., Lock Haven. Earlier in life he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and was a baker at Stroehmann Bros., in this city. He was a member of Gideon’s International, Milton Lions Club and the chamber of commerce. He was a 50 year member of Bethany United Methodist Church, a trustee and auditor and a member of its finance board and Sunday school. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of Jersey Shore High School. Born Jan. 30, 1913, in Jersey Shore, he was a son of Wilson and Rachel Cox Limbaugh. Surviving are three sons, the Rev. Glenn C. Jr. of Berwick, John W. of Sandpoint, Idaho and Don C. of Lock Haven; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry B. and a brother, Chester. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Elwood E. Leigey. Burial will be in Sallasasburg Cemetery with military honors accorded by the combined veterans organizations. WELLSBORO - Wallace D. Manuel, 78, of Wellsboro RR 5, died Friday Aug. 11, 2000, at home. He and his wife, the former Ethel MacKinney observed their 55th wedding anniversary in October. He was well known as “Whistling Wally Bird.” He and his wife opened Ethel & Wally’s Lucheonette and Deli, Maple Shade, N.J. he was the former owner and operator of Wellsboro Natural Foods Center. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He attended Independent Bible Church. Born Oct. 22, 1921, in Philadelphia, he was a son of Loren W. and Viola Hancheck Manuel. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Audrey M. Norton of Browns Mills, N.J. and Cheryl L. Garson of Bellmawr, N.J.; five grandsons; and a great-grandson. The funeral will be at noon Monday at Carleton’s, Route 6 East of Wellsboro, with the David Bliss officiating. Alfred W. Short, 61, of Austin Street, Wellsboro, died Thursday, August 10, 2000 at his home. He was married to Elaine A. Knaus Short for 30 years. He worked at the former Mergenthaler Linofilm retiring in 1983, and then was a self-employed data base programmer. He was a 1955 graduate of Liberty High School. He was a Methodist. He enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing, hunting and card playing. He was a member of the Wellsboro and Liberty Veterans of Foreign Wars, Tyoga Country Club and the Wellsboro Moose. He was an Air Force Veteran. Surviving, besides his wife, are three sons, Chris Maynard of Cranberry Township, Jeffrey and Jack Maynard, both of Palmyra, Va.; two daughters, Sheila Hansen of Dryden, N.Y. and Susan Zammer of New Ringgold; three sisters, Mary Kuryla of Seneca Falls, N.Y., Lynda Fogus of North East, and Bonnie of Wellsboro; a brother, Raymond of Ebensburg; a step-grandmother, Callie Butler of Wellsboro; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Kelly, Iva More and Dorothy Haines. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Tussey Mosher’s, 139 Main Street, Wellsboro, with the Rev. Peter A. RENOVO - Helen Weber, 82, of Kettle Creek, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at home. Her husband James E. Weber died March 27, 1990. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of Zion’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. She enjoyed fishing and bird watching. Born Aug. 23, 1917, in Renovo, she was a daughter of Harry E. and Anna Leahy Dickey. Surviving are three granddaughters, Linda Schmidt, Laura Fink and Rachael Goss; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Helen Schultz and Carol Carter; and infant son, Peter; two sisters, Jennie Proctor and Doris Dickey; and two brothers, Harry E. and John “Jack” Dickey. Lucy M. White, 84, of Waterloo, N.Y., mother of a city woman, died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000 at Seneca Nursing Home. She was the widow of Kenneth White. She was a homemaker. She was born in Dundee, N.Y., Feb. 14, 1916 a daughter of Burton and Saphronia Bump Wilcox. Surviving are three sons, George of Bluff Point, N.Y., John of Tocca, Ga. and Bill of Penn Yan, N.Y.; three daughters, Alice Wright of Stanley, N.Y., Arlene Watson of Dresdon, N.Y. and Betty Furman of this city; two brother, Ellory Wilcox of Caddo Mills, Texas and Dean Wilcox of Dade City, FLa.; a sister, Frances Gantz of Newark, N.Y.; 29 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. FLEMINGTON- Dorothy E. Baieroski, 71, of 1203 S. Hillview Street died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000 at home. Her husband, Donald Baireroski, died in 1989. She retired in 1984 after working 20 years at Smith Corona in Cortland, N.Y. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. She volunteered there and at Lock Haven Hospital. Born, Nov. 7, 1926, in Renovo, she was a daughter of Domenic and Jessie DeJoyce Valeria. Surviving are, four sisters, Beatrice Goodman and Lucy Hunter of Renovo, Marie Myers of Lock Haven and Delores Turner of Emporium; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the church, Lock Haven, with the Rev. Neil Dadey as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Yost-Gedon’s 121 W. Main St. Lock Haven.

Helen M. Foote, 78, formerly of 312 East Central Ave., died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, in Valley View Nursing Center. Her husband, John R. Foote, died August 31, 1980. She was a homemaker. Born August 7, 1922, in Montgomery, she was a daughter of Leamon Levi Nuss and Mable K. O’Dell. Surviving are five sons, Gordon L. of Maclure, John “R” of Cogan Station and Steven M., Dennis J., and Jerry E., all of South Williamsport; two daughters, Helen J. Zimmerman and Susan K. Shade, both of Jersey Shore; two brothers Franklin Nuss of Montgomery and Leamon Nuss of Oleon Ny; four sisters, Sara Andrews of Hughesville, Vivian Hunter of Duboistown, Norma Richie of Loyalsock, and Fay Patterson of Pensacola Fl; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, David Alan, on Aug. 7, 1957, and four brothers, Wilden Nuss, Carl Nuss, Harold Nuss, and J. Robert Nuss. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Knoll’s, 1 East Central Avenue, South Williamsport, with the Rev. Kenneth Weiss, pastor of First Church of Christ Disciples, officiating.
