Edgar L. “Doc” Ackerman, 80, of 685 First Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. He and his wife, the former E. Lorraine Cardene, observed their 55th wedding anniversary July 25. He was a retired deputy chief for the Williamsport Bureau of Fire for 25 years and was employed as an electrical supervisor with Commonwealth Electrical Inspection Service for 25 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and an ex-prisoner of war in Germany. He was a member of the Williamsport Consistory, the John F. Laedlein Lodge 707 and American Legion Post 1. He was a member of the Church of the Savior, Lutheran. Born Jan. 30, 1920, in this city, he was a son of Edward and Elsie Menzing Ackerman. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Bruce R. of Jacksonville, Fla. and James F. of this city; a daughter, Nancy J. Ackerman of Glendale, Cal.; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers, John, Frederick and James; and a sister, Elsie Ackerman. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the church, Memorial Avenue and Grier Street, with the Rev. Theodore L. Cockley, pastor of Redeemer Luthean Church, officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St., and in the church from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The family will provide the flowers.
Joseph Wayne Benoit
Joseph Wayne Benoit, 41, of Jackson Hole, Wyo., formerly of Haneyville, died Aug. 3, 2000, in Jackson Hole. He was a professional horse trainer, ranch manager and head wrangler at numerous ranches worldwide. He attended the Haneyville Baptist Churchduring the four years in lived in the area. He was born Jan. 3, 1959, in Gadon, La. Surviving are a son, Justin; a daughter, Dawn Thiboteaux; a companion, Gina Smith; three sisters, Brenda, Grace and Ruth Ann; and three brothers, Bobby, Daniel and Brian. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas. A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday in the Haneyville Baptist Church.
Eva B. Boritz
JERSEY SHORE - Eva B. Boritz, 79, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, in the Lock Haven Hospital extended care unit. Her husband, Frank J. Boritz, died in 1989. She was owner and operator of a ceramics shop first in Lock Haven and later in Jersey Shore. She previously was employed by Bloomsburg Mills in Lock Haven. She enjoyed working with ceramics, leather crafting, crotcheting and playing bingo. Born Jan. 7, 1921, in Lock Haven, she was a daughter of Charles and Violet Elizabeth Rossman Zell. Surviving are two brothers, Paul J. Zell of Avis and Karl L. Zell of Jersey Shore. She was predeceased by three brothers, Frank H., Charles S. and W. Dale Zell. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Rest Haven Memorial Park, with the Pastor Jeffrey Bayliff of the First Baptist Church of Lock Haven officiating. There will be no public visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Helt Hanna Kline’s, 232 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall.
Harlan K. Brumbach III
Harlan Kenneth “Kenny” Brumbach III, 9, of McAlisterville, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000. He had completed third grade at Monroe Township Elementary School. Born Dec. 26, 1990, in Lewisburg, he was a son of Harlan Kenneth Jr. and Jo-Lynne Rouse Brumbach. Surviving, besides his parents, are a brother, H. Kristopher; a sister, Heidi Kay Brumbach; maternal grandfathers, Donald Rouse of Selinsgrove and Robert Froelich of Galeton; maternal great-grandmother, Dorothy Jane Lampman of Ulysses; and paternal grandparents, Irene Brumbach of Gaines and Dallas and Christine Speigelmeier of Selinsgrove. The funeral will be 1 p.m. today at Collins-Olney’s, 14 West St., Galeton. Burial will be in Parker Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 1 p.m. today.
Arthur E. Foster
Arthur E. Foster, 56, 620 Fourth Ave., died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. He was a self-employed laborer. He was a member of the Garrett Cochran Post 1, American Legion. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a graduate of Loyalsock Township High School. Born July 8, 1944, in Clearfield, he was a son of James Robert Sr. and Esther C. Kable Foster. Surviving are his wife, the former Sue Bailey; a daughter, Maryellen Sanders of this city; three stepdaughters, Darla and Keri Bailey of this city and Kathleen Valencia in Arizona; five stepsons, David, Scott, Brian, Ray and Jason Bailey of this city; two brothers, Frederick of Cogan Station and John of this city; five sisters, Ramona Kiefer of Antes Fort, Amy Cowher of Jersey Shore, Carolyn Hunt of Clearfield, Carol Lumadue of Buffalo, N.Y. and Sheila Fox of South Williamsport; and 12 step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, James and Kenneth. A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. Internment will be in Twin Hills Memorial Park. Clarence Dale Heck
MILL HALL - Clarence Dale Heck, 92, of Mill Hall RR 2 died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, in the Lock Haven Hospital extended care unit. His wife, the former Annette Arbena, died in 1987. He retired in 1968 from the Philadelphia School District as a construction inspector. He previously was employed by Atlantic Refining Co. of Philadelphia. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Selinsgrove. Born Jan. 2, 1908, in Defiance, he was a son of Charles and Gertrude Dreher Heck. Surviving are two daughters, Delores Levin of Lansdowne and Sara Smith of Williamsport; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons, John W. and Charles D.; and three sisters, Thelma Hassenplug, Florence Walborn and Sara Burgit. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Helt Hanna Kline’s, 232 Hogan Blvd., with Monsignor Dennis R. Boggs officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill. DANVILLE - Nancy J. Shultz, 61, of 2199 Washingtonville Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at home. She and her husband, Paul W. Shultz, observed their 40th wedding anniversary June 18. She was a homemaker and had been employed at the former Shroyer’s Dress Factory, Milton. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Christ, Strawberry Ridge. Born April 23, 1939, in White Deer Township, Union County, she was a daughter of Ralph E. and Winifred R. Huff Fisher. Surviving, besides her husband and her mother of New Columbia, are a son, Mark E. Shultz of Danville; three brothers, Nelson L. Fisher and Robert D. Fisher, both of New Columbia, and Henry E. Fisher of Lewisburg; six sisters, Ruth Stump, Beryl Beaver and Kay Metzger, all of New Columbia, Grace Fegley of Hummelstown, Beatrice Hess of New Columbia and Carl Shrawder of Milton; and a grandson. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brooks’, 207 Broadway St., Turbotville, with the Rev. Rosemary Dawson, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, New Columbia. Carl N. Tressler, 72, of Summerfield, Fla., a city native, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Born April 20, 1928, in this city, he was a son of Theodore Walter Christopher Tressler Sr. and Grace Minnie Violet Elliott Tressler. Surviving, besides his mother of this city, are three sons, Carl Jr. of Summerfield, Walter of Ocklawaha, Fla. and Frank in Arkansas; three daughters, Ann Koch of this city, Cindy Holly of Pedro, Fla. and Mary Alice Tressler of Ocala, Fla.; a stepson, Rodney Shick in Texas; a sister, Betty Tressler of this city; a brother, Theodore W. of this city; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Donald; and two sisters, Harriett Chapman and Eleanor Burkhart. A memorial service was held Thursday in Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Kathleen Joyce Wilcox
CANTON - Kathleen Joyce Wilcox, 55, of Canton RR 1 died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at the home of a sister. She was a member of the Canton Calvary Alliance Chapel and she previously attended First Baptist Church in Canton. She was employed by the Penn York Co., Athens,. and the Martha Lloyd School, Troy. She graduated from Canton High School in 1962. Born Dec. 20, 1964, in Elmira, N.Y., she was a daughter of Edmund “Mark” and Jane Slade Wilcox. Surviving are five sisters, Judy Dole of Canton, Barbara Sheesley of Watkins Glen, N.Y., Marjorie May Wilcox of Edmonds, Wash., Karla Oglesby of Zion, Ill. and Eleanor Ruth Shaffer of LaCross, Wis.; two brothers, John H. and Philip Wilcox, both of Kenosia, Wis.; and a companion, Daniel Walsh of Sayre. The funeral will be at 6 p.m. Sunday in the chapel, with the Revs. David McIntire and Norman Pierce officiating. Internment will be at the convenience of the family. Dennis Charles Kolasa III
Dennis Charles Kolasa III, 1 month old, of 1015 W. Southern Ave., South Williamsport, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born July 27 in Danville, he was a son of Dennis Charles Kolasa Jr. and Bobbi Jo Shope. Surviving, besides his parents, are a sister, Brittany Shope, and a brother, Braxton Shope, both at home; maternal grandmother, Rita Coy of South Williamsport; paternal grandmother, Mary Kolasa of Williamsport; and paternal grandfather, Dennis Kolasa of DuBoistown. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery RR 2.
Whilomean E. Likens
Whilomean E. “Billie” Likens, 68, of 1068 Miller Hill Road, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at home. She and her husband, Robert L. “Shorty” Likens, observed their 45th wedding anniversary April 26. She retired in 1988 from Sylvania, Montoursville. She was a 1949 graduate of Williamsport High School. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 3428, Muncy; the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 268; and Moose Club Lodge 145 where she was an avid bowler. Born Oct. 9, 1931, in Williamsport, she was a daughter of Clarence J. and Mary E. Mayer Tinney. Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, Edward J. of Ralston and David H. of Norfolk, Va.; a daughter, Sharon E. Roedts of Warrensville; a sister, Mary “Biz” Breidinger of Trout Run; and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, William F., this year. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy RR 2, with the Rev. James Sunderland officiating. The family will provide the flowers. Abram Chad Phillips, 29, of 423 Germania St., died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, in Nashville, Tenn. He was a retail salesperson. He enjoyed traveling and spending time on many beaches. Born May 10, 1971, in this city, he was a son of Daniel C. and Linda J. Whiteman Phillips. Surviving, besides his mother, Linda J. Bussler of South Williamsport and his father and stepmother, Daniel and Donna Phillips at home, are a son, Abram Chad of Danville; a brother, Justin M. of this city; a sister, Tonya Marie Snow in Virginia; paternal grandparents Earl and Beverly Phillips of this city; and maternal grandmother, Ruth Dunkleberger of this city. Elizabeth J. “Betty” Pulizzi, 74, of 1116 Chestnut St., Montoursville, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at Sycamore Manor. She and her husband, Phillip N. Pulizzi, observed their 53rd wedding anniversary Aug. 7. She was a member of Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church and its Christian Women’s Society. She was a 1945 graduate of Williamsport High School. She was a member of the Williamsport Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and she was on the board of directors of the Florence Crittendon Home. Born Feb. 1, 1926, in Williamsport, she was a daughter of Luther M. and Martha Frymire Derr. Surviving, besides her husband, are a son, Phillip N. Jr of Arlington, Va.; two daughters, Louise E. Pulizzi of Bethesda, Md. and Mary Anne Pulizzi of Brussels, Belgium; a sister, Mary L. Bailey; and two grandchildren, Ann Elizabeth Pulizzi and Phillip George Pulizzi. She was predeceased by two brothers, Luther M. and Lester E. Derr. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with her pastor, Msgr. Francis J. Castellano, officiating. Edward P. Weiss
MIDDLEBURY CENTER - Edward P. Weiss, 89, of Middlebury Center RD 2, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, at Carleton Senior Care Home, Wellsboro. His wife, Florence Stuebing Weiss, died in 1974. He retired from A & P Foods in 1973. He was a member of Moose Lodge 1147, Wellsboro and the Teamsters Union. He enjoyed playing bingo, dancing, doing yard work and feeding wildlife. Born May 2, 1911, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of Frank and Pauline Schmidt Weiss. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth of West Saugerties, N.Y. and Robert of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister, Pauline Weiss of Queens, N.Y.; a brother, Frank of Syracuse, N.Y.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Iva G. Zerby, 88, of 1201 Rural Ave., died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at Roseview Center. Her husband, James W. Zerby Sr., died July 28. She was a member of the Good News Ministry in Linden. Born June 4, 1912, in Morris, she was a daughter of Lucian J. and Dora May Whitten Buckingham. Surviving are a son, James W. Jr. of Linden; a daughter, Mary J. Pellacore of Allenwood; two sisters, Laura Knarr of this city and Lelabel Gardner of Monroeton; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Carl Everett Ranck; a daughter, Gretta Rubin; seven sisters and two brothers. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Citychurch, 36 E. James E. Frailey
James E. Frailey, 90, formerly of 1012 Cherry St., died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, in Valley View Nursing Center following a lengthy illness. He and his wife, the former Marian L. Page, observed their 65th wedding anniversary April 18. He retired in 1975 as an assistant manager of the commercial printing division of Grit Publishing Co. He previously was employed as an assistant manager at the former Capitol Theatre and the former Keystone Theatre. He was a 1930 graduate of Williamsport High School. He served during World War II as a housing coordinator for employees of the former Pennsylvania Ordinance Works, White Deer, and was a supervisor of communications when the ordinance closed. He was a member of the Young Men’s Republican Club. He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and served on its council and other church committees and was a Boy Scout coordinator. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Born May 25, 1910, in this city, he was a son of Edwin V. and Laura Mae Fausey Frailey. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, James E. Jr. of Jaffrey, N.H.; a daughter, Ann P. Conrad of Hagerstown, M.D.; two grandchildren, Denise Magruder and Karen White; and a grandson. He was predeceased by two brothers, William and Victor. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday in the church, 1400 Market St., with his pastor, the Rev. James H. Fladland officiating. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery at the convenience of the family. The family will provide the flowers. There will be no visitation.
