Margaret Katheryn Patterson, 60, of 21 Hoover St. died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at home. She and her husband, Harry Patterson, observed their 32nd wedding anniversary July 29. She was a teller at Soverign Bank, Montoursville. She was a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School, Lock Haven. She was a volunteer at the Cancer Treatment Center. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church and was active in several church groups including the church choir. Born Sept. 19, 1939, in Lock Haven, she was a daughter of Raymond and Elsie Croak. Surviving, besides her husband, are two daughters, Tammy Stacy in Georgia and Melinda Bower of this city; a sister, Alice Miller of Lock Haven; and five grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Cheryl Ann in 1965; and two brothers, Perry and Raymond Croak. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the church, 89 Kimball Hill Road, with her pastor, the Rev. Thomas C. Fiddle, officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call in the church from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesday. Arrangements are being handled by Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St.
Ruth R. Pfeiffer
Ruth R. Pfeiffer, 88, formerly of 2079 Blair St., died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in Sycamore Manor following a brief illness. Her husband, Charles F. Pfeiffer, died in 1993. She was a member of Faxon-Kenmar United Methodist Church. Born Sept. 27, 1911, in this city, she was a daughter of Bert P. and Ida M. Everett Frymire. Surviving are a daughter, Ann P. Gehrig of this city; a sister, Eleanor Caldwell of this city; three grandchildren, Robert S. and James C. Gehrig and Elizabeth Ann Gottleib; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave., with her pastor, the Rev. Ronald O. Doan officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Fritz Etta Yoxtheimer
JERSEY SHORE - Fritz Etta Yoxtheimer, 67, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in Jersey Shore Hospital. She was married to James H. Yoxtheimer Sr. She was a member of the First United Church. She was a member of the Jersey Shore Elks Auxiliary. Born Jan. 23, 1933, in Shamokin, she was a daughter of Fredrick C. and Ellen L. Middlesworth Bower. Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, James H. Jr. of Avis and Fredrick of Jersey Shore; two daughters, Linda Yoxtheimer of Levitton and Ellen Keegan of Mt. Laurel, N.J.; a brother, Robert Bower of Elysburg; a sister, Jean Yost of Sunbury; and four grandchildren. A private family service will be held at Welker’s, 125 N. Main St.
James F. Connor Jr.
TOWANDA - James Francis Connor Jr., 79, of Wilmot Township, Bradford County, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at Memorial Hospital here. He retired in 1984 after 39 years as a maintenance mechanic for the Philadelphia School District. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a Northeast Catholic High School graduate. He was a member of St. Basil’s Catholic Church, Dushore. Born March 9, 1921, in Philadelphia, he was a son of James F. and Margaret Carr Connor. Surviving are two brothers, Joseph P. of Annapolis, Md., and Eugene B. of Wilmot; three sisters, Marie Wolf of Churchville, Regina Cole of Holmes and Ann Taylor of Mapleshade, N.J. The funeral will be at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Homer’s, 206 Water St., Dushore, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m at the church, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, his pastor, presiding. Burial will be in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Montgomery County. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.
Edwin L. Hoose
GROVER - Edwin L. Hoose, 82, of Elmira, N.Y., formerly of Grover, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at home. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Grover. He played the violin for the Bill Butler Orchestra and was a member of the Elmirans. Born May 5, 1918, in Elmira, N.Y., he was a son of Dean and Edith Wilcox Hoose. Surviving are a brother, Ken of Deming, N.M., and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Olthof’s, 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, N.Y., with the Rev. Jack Otto, formerly of the Ecumenical Church of Grover, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

WELLSBORO - Erna H. Layton, 88, of Wellsboro died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at the Green Home. She was the widow of Alvin C. Layton. Born July 5, 1912, in Wellsboro, she was a daughter of Edward and Cora Dart Smith. Surviving are a son, Richard N., and a daughter, Patricia A. Crittenden, both of here; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wellsboro Cemetery, with the Rev. Ronald W. Bly of the Draper Baptist Church officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Scureman’s, Mansfield.

Robert Lee Wise
Robert Lee “Bob” Wise, 69, of Phenix City, Ala., a city native, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, at his home. His wife, Sara “Liz” Ardell Wise, survives. He retired from the Army and served in the Korean War and during Vietnam. He was commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5228 FOR 11 years, past commander of District 5 VFW and a member of American Legion, Opelika. He was a member of the Auburn Heights Baptist Church. Born July 18, 1931, he was a son of Loretta Weasner Struck. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Lisa D. Livingston and Poo Carrero, both of Smiths, Ala.; two sons, Robert Lee Jr. of Salem, Ala., and William E. of Columbus, Ga.; a brother, William of Hughesville; four grandchildren, Robert “Eddie” Livingston, Jeffrey C. Carrero Jr., Hannah Katelyn Wise, and Brantley Nolen Carrero. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Vance Memorial Chapel, Phenix City, Ala., with Dr. Wayne Scarborough and the Rev. Mike McKnight officiating. Military honors will be conducted at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery.
Opal I. Blue
RIVERSIDE - Opal I. “Chick” Blue, 81, of 320 Avenue E, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where she had been a patient. She and her husband, L. Neil Blue, observed their 54th wedding anniversary June 3. She was a seamstress and was well known in the Danville and Riverside areas for her sewing. She was a member of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church. Born April 6, 1919, in Dahlen, N.D., she was a daughter of Alec and Iva Anderson Barry. Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, Gary L. of Watsontown and Terry A. of Danville; a daughter, Janice Pledger of Yucaipa, Calif.; a brother, Keith Barry of Bismark, N.D.; two sisters, Lorraine E. Ouren of Fargo, N.D. and Jean Lidenberg of Prairie, N.M.; and a granddaughter, Teresa Lynn. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church, 240 Sunbury Road, with the Rev. Dr. Timothy W. Weitkamp, her pastor, officiating. Entombment will be in the memorial crypt at Elan Memorial Park, Bloomsburg. Friends may call in the church from 10 to 11 a.m. The family will provide the flowers. Carl B. Bowen, 74, of Tempe, Ariz., formerly of this city, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at home. He was formerly a member of the Williamsport City Police Department and proprietor of an Exxon Service station here. Born in this city, he was a son of Don and Emily Bowen. Surviving are his wife, Shirley; a daughter, Karen Kratz of Columbia, S.C.; two sons, Kenneth of Mill Hall and David of Key West, Fla.; two sisters, Doris Keller and Margaret Berfield, both of South Williamsport; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Max, Glenn and Ray. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Tempe’s, 405 E. Southern Ave., Tempe.

Margaret Ann Free, 54, of Hot Springs, Ark., died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, in a Little Rock, Ark., Hospital. Born April 24, 1946, in this city, she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Seewald. She attended St. Mary’s High School. She was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church, Hot Springs. Surviving are her husband, Richard T. Free Jr.; two sons, Robert J. Hamilton of Montoursville and Douglas S. Hamilton of Allentown; a daughter, Margaret Ann Kyle of Allentown; two brothers, Msgr. Carl Seewald of Oakland, Calif. and Robert Seewald of Lonsdale, Ark.; a sister, Debbie Hahn of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. Services were held in the church. Burial will be in a Cemetery in Hot Springs. Arrangements were handled by Gross’, Hot Springs. The family will provide the flowers.
Richard M. Houser
Richard M. Houser, 65, of 12866 Wallis Run Road, Trout Run, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. He and his wife, the former Patricia A. Hampton, observed their 45th wedding anniversary Jan 29. He retired as superintendent of North Central Game Farms after more than 25 years and previously worked for Darling Valve. He was a Plunketts Creek Township supervisor and a member of the board of Plunketts Creek Foundation and Barbours Cemetery Association. He graduated with the first class of Lycoming County emergency medical technicians and was instrumental in starting an ambulance service in Plunketts Creek Township. He was a lifetime member of Plunketts Creek Township Volunteer Fire Co. and a fire chief and ambulance captain. He had been a forest fire warden. He was a member of the Wheel Inn, Ralston. Born Aug. 7, 1935 in Montgomery, he was a son of Irvin and Martha Atkins Houser. Surviving, besides his wife are two daughters, Terri L. Chapman of this city and Toni M. Watts of Trout Run; two brothers, I. LeRoy of South Williamsport and Exra of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Bonnie Abernatha of Lancaster; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville.
Susanna E. Lowe
Susanna E. Lowe, 95, formerly of Newberry, died Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, in the Williamsport Home. Her husband, Bert I. Lowe, died in 1961. She was a Methodist. She enjoyed teaching and playing the piano. She was a 1928 graduate of Shamokin High School. Born May 1, 1905, in Halls Station, she was a daughter of Kimber W. and Emma I. Thurston Lewis. Surviving are two sons, Mahlon K. of this city and Kenneth G. of Muncy; a daughter, Shirley Ward of Trout Run; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Twin Hills Memorial Park. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Kaufman’s, 2102 Northway Road.
Julia May McCullough
Julia May McCullough, 89, formerly of Haneyville, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in the Lock Haven Hospital extended care unit, where she had lived since 1998. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Albert Rippey and her second husband, Bert McCullough. She was a Star Route mail carrier for the Lock Haven Post Office for more than 20 years, retiring in 1973. She enjoyed painting, ceramics and crocheting. Born April 25, 1911, in Hublersburg, she was a daughter of Edward and Amanda Scheffler Evers. Surviving are a daughter, Jean Decker Stehman of Lock Haven; four sons, Richard A. Rippey of Erie, James C. of Buffalo, N.Y., Glenn R. and Gary L. Rippey, both of lock Haven; 23 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Deanna M. Eike and a son, John Thomas Rippey. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Yost-Gedon’s, 121 W. Main St., Lock Haven, with the Revs. Dan Helenek and Murhl Howland, officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Sarah M. “Sally” Meelan, 88, of 1545 Elliott St. died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at ManorCare Health Services. Her husband, Mitchell J. Meelan, died Aug. 7, 1985. She was a homemaker and worked with her husband at Meelan Interiors. She was a member of the Williamsport Country and Bridge clubs and Divine Providence Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church. Born July 21, 1912 in Snow Shoe, she was a daughter of William R. and Daisy B. Davis Quick. Surviving are a son, Mitchell A., with whom she lived, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, John J., and two brothers, Vincent E. Quick Sr. and William R. Quick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the church, 1223 Northway Road, with the Rev. Andrew Kurovsky her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. BLOSSBURG - Greta L. Mills, 76, of Blossburg, formerly of Belle Vernon, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, in Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. Her husband, James Mills, died Feb. 11, 1999. She was a secretary in the Belle Vernon area for many years, retiring in 1978. She was a graduate of Katherine Gibbs Secretary School, New York City. She was a member of Blossburg United Methodist Church. Born April 20, 1924, she was a daughter of Carl James and Beatrice Morris Lyons. Surviving are a daughter, Penny Swope of Blossburg; a son, Randall of Morris; two sisters, Shirley Jorinacay of Kennerdale and Agatha Iannuzzi of Verona; and two grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zwicharowski’s, 314 Granger St., with the Rev. Allen Huslander, officiating. Burial will be in Arbon Cemetery.
