Jane E. Drayton, 81, of 820 Broad St., Montoursville, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at home. She and her husband, William Drayton, observed their 59th wedding anniversary Nov. 30. She was a registered nurse. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. Born June 11, 1919, in Montoursville, she was a son of Walter A. and Rita Harding Eck. Surviving, besides her husband, are two daughters, Marjorie D. Freund of Pittsburgh and Virginia Pirmann of State College; and two brothers, James W. and Dr. John A. Eck, both of Muncy. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the church, 700 Fairview Dr., Montoursville, with her pastor, Paul C. Murphy, officiating. Friends may call in the church from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Friday. Jeannie M. Hill; Former administrator at Willliamsport Hospital and Muncy School Director
MUNCY – Jeannie M. Hill, 47, of 163 Shaggy Bark Lane, Pennsdale, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, in Muncy Valley Hospital after being stricken at home.She and her husband, Kenneth F. Hill, would have observed their 16th wedding anniversary Oct. 6. She was a registered nurse with Susquehanna Health System. She formerly served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Williamsport Hospital. She was a Muncy School director. She was a member of Pennsdale United Methodist Church. She was a 1970 graduate of Jersey Shore High School, where she was named Tiadaughton Queen. She was a graduate of Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in hospital and business administration and of Penn College with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She earned a master’s degree from Temple University. She was a member of the fund-raising committee of Pennsdale Volunteer Fire Co. and the Muncy Little League Board of Directors. Born Sept. 20, 1952 in Willliamsport, she was a daughter of Earl D. and Mary E. Burke Eck. Surviving, besides her husband, are her mother, Mary E. Temple; two sons, Travis K. and Kyle G., both at home; and two brothers, David J. Eck of Jersey Shore and Thomas G. Eck of Montoursville. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Faith United Methodist Church, 700 Fairview Drive, Montoursville, with the Rev. Cecily A. Eisley, her pastor, officiating. MUNCY - Jennie A. Meckly, 75, of 421 S. Washington St., died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at Muncy Valley Hospital, where she was admitted Saturday. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert H. Akers, in 1956 and her second husband, Richard W. Meckly in 1996. She was a switchboard operator at the former Sprout-Waldron for 10 years. She was a member of Muncy Baptist Church, a member of its Sunday school, a Sunday school teacher, and a former member of its choir. She was a member of American Baptist Women’s Ministries and a former treasurer of American Baptist Women of Pennsylvania and Delaware. She was a volunteer at Muncy Valley Hospital and member and past treasurer of the Muncy Unit of the Muncy Valley Hospital Auxiliary. She was secretary of Muncy High School Alumni Association for more than 20 years. She was a former Meals on Wheels volunteer. Born Sept. 2, 1925, in Millville, Columbia County, she was a daughter of Emerson D. and Ellen Smith Bardo Sr. Surviving are two daughters, Judith E. Andrews of Muncy and Nancy A. King of Avis; two sisters, Cora Quigel of this city and Lottie L. Smith of New Columbia; a brother, Emerson D. Bardo Jr. of Muncy; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert H. Akers II and Fred E. Akers; two sisters, Ocie Carson and Della Johnson; and five brothers, Raymond and Clark Sellers, Luther, Charles and Donald Bardo. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, Penn and Market Streets, with the Rev. D. Gene Patterson, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Muncy Cemetery. Margaret E. Hartman
GALETON - Margaret E. Hartman, 81, of Galeton died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at Broad Acres Nursing Home, Wellsboro. She and her husband, Paul J. Hartman, observed their 62nd wedding anniversary Feb. 14. She and her husband owned and operated a farm in Germania for many years. She also was a clerk at the former Red and White Store. Born Feb. 28, 1919, in South Branch, she was a daughter of Ferdinand and Ethel Clark Anderegg. Surviving, besides her husband, are a son, Richard P. of Knoxville; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gwen Burrous. Services were Wednesday. Arrangements were handled by Collins-Olney’s, 14 West St.
Norman T. Heimer
Norman T. Heimer, 85, of 849 Snydertown Road, Howard, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, in the Lock Haven Hospital extended care unit. He and his wife, the former Ellalee T. Confer, observed their 20th wedding anniversary Dec. 22. He retired in 1977 from Woodchips, Inc., Mill Hall. He had previously been employed by the Chair Factory, Lock Haven, for 25 years and the former Lock Haven Dye Works. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a former member of the American Legion. He was a former member of Salona United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Beech Creek High School. Born June 8, 1915, in Beech Creek, he was a son of Charles P. and Minnie Whitehouse Heimer. Surviving are two daughters, Doris Bitner of Woolrich and Mary Geyer of Mill Hall; two sons, Charles of Lock Haven and Norman T. Jr. of Rauchtown; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Rupert; four brothers, George, Carl, Leonard and Allen; and a granddaughter. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Wetzler’s, 320 Main St., Mill Hall, with the Rev. Ellen Evans, officiating. Burial will be in Hayes-Fearon Cemetery, Beech Creek.
Raymond A. Houseknecht
HUGHESVILLE - Raymond A. Houseknecht, 86, of 312 E. Lycoming St. died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, in Valley View Nursing Center, where he had been a resident since Friday. He and his wife, the former Helen M. Bogart, observed their 60th wedding anniversary June 29. He retired in 1975 as owner and operator of Ray’s Gulf Service, Hughesville, and had previously been employed by the former Bethlehem Steel and Secules Garage, Hughesville. He was a social member of Edward Smith Post 3428 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Roland Ritter Post 268 American Legion, both in Muncy, and Milton Moose Lodge 171. He was a member of Gordner’s Lutheran Church, Unityville. Born June 3, 1914, in Moreland Township, he was a son of Hurley and Mary Houseknecht Houseknecht. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Sylvan R. “Butch” of Hughesville; two sisters, Evalene VanDine and Reanna Aderhold both of Hughesville; and three grandchildren, Kevin R., Angela R. and Jennifer R. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Arthur, Collins and Gordon. A family graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Gordner Cemetery, Unityville with the Rev. Charles A. Baier Jr., Cordner’s Lutheran Church, officiating. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Wallis-Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy.
Leona B. Moore
WELLSBORO - Leona B. Moore, 97, of Bacon Street, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, in Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. Her husband, Charles J. Moore died Feb. 20, 1977. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Wellsboro. Born Dec. 27, 1902, in Arnot, she was a daughter of John and Martha Willard Burton. Surviving are a son, Max of Watkins Glen, N.Y.; a daughter Mercedes Goodreau of Wellsboro; a brother, Wade Burton of Boulder City, Nev.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Frank, and several brothers and sisters. A private family prayer service will be at the convenience of the family, with Gary Goodreau, her grandson, officiating. Burial will be in Catlin Hollow Cemetery, with the Rev. John McNassor, officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St.
Henry L. Niles
WELLSBORO - Henry L. Niles, 75, of Jackson Street, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, in Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. His first wife, Joyce D. Niles, died in 1984. His second wife is the former Dolores Andrews. Niles retired as an employee of North East Dairy Co-Operative. He enjoyed woodworking. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Middle Ridge Church. Born March 10, 1925, in Charleston Township, he was a son of Lloyd H. “Pete” and Gladys Johnson Niles. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Fred H. of Gautier, Miss. and David M. of Wellsboro; three stepsons, Ellsworth, James and Donald; a daughter, Susan Whitford of Wellsboro; a stepdaughter, Roberta; a sister, Loretta Obourn of Wellsboro; four grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., with the Rev. Kermit Shrawder, officiating. Burial will be in Wellsboro Cemetery. Catherine M. Pchola
Catherine M. Pchola, 86, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Manor Care South, where she had been a resident since 1998. She had lived with her daughter in this city since 1996. Her husband, Joseph A. Pchola, died July 22, 1962. She retired from the housekeeping department of Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, and previously was retail clerk and owner of Academy Distributors, Shamokin. She attended St. Edward Catholic School, Shamokin. She was a member of Mother Cabrini Church, Shamokin, and its Altar-Rosary society. Born Aug. 2, 1914, in Shamokin, she was a daughter of Joseph and Catherine McCormick Rhoades. Surviving are a daughter, Kathleen Vanaskie of this city; a sister, Louise Rhoades of Mechanicsburg; a brother, Edward Rhoades of Enola; four grandchildren, Stephen, Matthew and Christopher Vanaskie and Ann Marie Watters; and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Purcell and Irene McCormick and three brothers, Theodore, Joseph and James Rhoades. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the church, Shamokin. Burial will be in Saint Edward Cemetery, Coal Township. A family visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday, with public visitation from 9:30 to 10:30 in the church. Arrangements are being handled by Kelley’s, 1001 W. Arch St., Coal Township.
Sarah Levina Simmons
Sarah Levina “Sallie” Simmons, 64, a city native, of 124 Crestview Village, Middletown, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in Harrisburg Hospital, after a lengthy illness. She and her husband, Robert V. Simmons, were married for 19 years. A homemaker in recent years she, was formerly a bartender. Surviving, besides her husband, are a son, Roland E. of Ephrata; two daughters, Sandra L. Heck of Ephrata and Roxann E. Benn of Lancaster; a stepson Brook of Owensboro, Ky.; two stepdaughters, Roberta Maurer and Monique, both of Ephrata; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The services were today in Ephrata. Arrangements were handled by Gravenor’s, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata.
Angeline Catherine Bongiovi
Angeline Catherine Bongiovi, 89, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at Roseview Manor. Her husband, Joseph C. Bongiovi, died in 1946. She retired from Williamsport Area School District after 32 years at Roosevelt School cafeteria. She had previously worked for the Williamsport Country Club and Crown Room of Kings Motel. She was a member of Lincoln Senior Citizens Center. SHe was past president of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and the PTA, and was class mother for the class of 1959 at Roosevelt Junior High School, and served on the board of elections for many years. She was a member of Mater Dolorosa Church, and member past president of its women’s society. She enjoyed baking, cooking, crocheting afghans and playing cards. Born March 24, 1911, in Waverly, N.Y., she was a daughter of Joseph L. and Antonia Aucone Cardone. Surviving are a son, Joseph I. of this city; a daughter, Ann Marie Scinicariello of Dickson City; a sister, Victoria H. Rougeux of Harrisburg; two brothers, James C. Cardone of this city and Donald L. Cardone of Endwell, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; a step-grandchild; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Louise M. Pulizzi and a brother, Albert L. Cardone. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church, 635 Hepburn St., with Msgr. Francis J. Castellano and the Rev. Michael McCormick, as celebrants. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Sanders’, 821 Diamond St., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a recitation of the rosary at 8.
David W. Kress
LOCK HAVEN - David W. Kress, 80, a former Lock Haven resident, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, in Falls Church, Va., after a long illness. He and his wife, Betty Kress, observed their 55th wedding anniversary Oct. 28. He retired in 1992 from the Federal Aviation Administration, Washington, D.C. after 16 years there, where he wrote and administered FAA regulations governing commuter airlines and local flight operations, and was previously employed by FAA’s predecessor in 1947. He also worked at the former Piper Aircraft, Lock Haven. He earned his commercial and flight instructor licenses at Des Moines Flying School, Des Moines, Iowa. He was a World War II Navy veteran, and became a primary flight instructor at Bunker Hill, Indiana. He remained in the Navy Reserves until 1964. He was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Springfield, Va. Born May 30 1920, in Lock Haven, he was a son of John Rockey and Myral Teed Kress. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, David W. of West Boxford, Maine and Steven R. of Blanchard; and four grandchildren, Noah, Micha, Melanie and Kevin. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Cemetery, with the Rev. Russell Moldoven, officiating. There will be no visitation. Minnie Conable LaRoy
GALETON - Minnie Conable LaRoy, 94, of Galeton, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport. Her first husband, Seth Conable, died in 1946, and her second husband, Herbert LaRoy died in 1998. She retired as a teacher from Galeton Area School District and had previously worked at Crippentown, Elk Run, Albuquerque, N.M. and Cowley Hill, N.Y. schools. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She was a graduate of Galeton High School and Mansfield Normal School. She was a member of West Pike Baptist Church. Born June 15, 1906, in West Branch, Galeton, she was a daughter of Belle and Rose Stuart Burrous. Surviving are two sons, Frederick Conable of Galeton and John Conable of Arvada, Colo; a step daughter, Rosemary Lehman of Brooktondale, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Willis B. Conable and two grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. John Prouty and the Rev. Glenn Hamilton, co-officiating. Burial will be in West Branch Cemetery. Friends may call at Collins-Olney’s, 14 West St., from 7 to 9 tonight.

Betty J. Scranton
Betty J. Scranton, 79, formerly of this city, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000. She was the widow of Marion “Bud” E. Scranton. She had been a member of Wesley Methodist Church, in this city. Born Dec. 18, 1920, she was a daughter of Everett and Belvia Dunn Hutcheson. Surviving are two daughters, Carol A. Cheesman of Richmond, Va. and Margaret K. of Missoula, Mont.; a brother, Gordon Hutcheson of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Paul E. III, Deborah L. and Alison M. Cheesman; and a great-grandson. Services were today at Bon Air Presbyterian Church, Richmond. Arrangements were handled by Woody’s, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian, Va.

Mary M. Springer, 86, of 655 North Liberty St., Penn Yan, N.Y., formerly of the Washintonville area, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home, Penn Yan. Her husband, John H. Springer, died May 5, 1972. She retired from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Yates County, N.Y. previously working on a dairy farm with her husband. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Potter, N.Y. and had formerly attended Washingtonville Lutheran Church. Born Oct. 11, 1913, in Danville RR 2, she was a daughter of P. Frank and Grace E. Sechler Cromis. Surviving is a cousin, Harold Sechler of Danville RR 8, who was raised with her and several other cousins. She was preceded in death by a brother, Myron Cromis; a sister, Belva Cromis; and four half brothers, Mentor, Curtis, Roy and Carroll Cromis. The funeral will be at noon Saturday at her church in Potter, with the Rev. Nissa Deibler, her pastor, officiating. Friends may call at Weldon’s, Penn Yan, from 7 to 9 tonight. William L. Terlinski
WELLSBORO - William L. Terlinski, 55, of Grand Canyon Road, Wellsboro, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. He and his wife, the former Katherine M. Lualdi, had been married for 27 years. He was a truck driver for H.W. Taynton Co. and Campbell Trucking for 11 years and formerly employed as a trackman for Penn Central Railroad for eight years. He was a veteran of the Air Force. He was a 1962 graduate of Reynoldsville High School. He was a private pilot and enjoyed model trains and fishing. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Born Nov. 25, 1944, in DuBois, he was a son of William Lewis and Marguerite Burkes Terlinski. Surviving, besides his wife, are three daughters, Terri of Wellsboro, Aimee of Coast Guard Air Station, Atlantic City, N.J. and Mary Penn State; two sisters, Alyce Slivochka of Austintown, Ohio and Sally Burgess of Erie; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at the church, with the Rev. Michael J. Sullivan, officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery.
