SALLADASBURG- Sharon L. Hershberger, 51, of 9313 West Route 973, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at home. She and her husband, Ralph M. Hershberger, observed their 19th wedding anniversary, April 6. She had worked at Trimtex. She was a graduate of South Williamsport High School. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Born May 15, 1949, in Williamsport, she was a daughter of Clyde and Alice Brown Lyke. Surviving are five daughters, Kimberly A. Wilson and Lisa D. Wilt, both of this city; Teresa L. Harris of Hilton Head, S.C.; Kelly L. Phillips and Shelly L. Summers, both of Jersey Shore; a stepson, Ralph M. Jr. of Jersey Shore; a sister, Joyce A. Bower of Lamar; two brothers, Randy L. and Ronnie E. Fischer, both of this city; 13 grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Harry J. Terry. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Welker’s, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore, with the Rev. David Bixler, officiating. Burial will be in Oval Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 to 11 a.m.

Betty E. Caldwell
Betty E. Caldwell, 77, of 99 Wendell Run Road, Trout Run, died on Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at the Williamsport Hospital. She and her husband, Dalton C., observed their 58th wedding anniversary on June 13. She was a graduate of Williamsport High School. She was a member of the Walnut Street Baptist Church, Jersey Shore. Born Feb. 15, 1923, in Hazleton, she was the daughter of George Albert and Stella M. Wenner Lilly. Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Karen E. Liddick and Susan E. Liddic of Salladasburg, Vicki M. Brown of Holtwood; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy J. Ulmer. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave. with Rev. George C. Grossman, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Summit Cemetery, White Pine. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The family will provide the flowers.

Ethel Cangemi
Ethel Cangemi, of Silver Spring, Md., sister of a Montgomery woman, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at home after an extended illness. She retired from Montgomery County School System, in Maryland. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Silver Spring. Born Sept. 8, 1934, in Washington D.C., she was a daughter of Kelly and Ethel M. Knight Woodell. Surviving are two sons, Gary of Scranton and Christopher of Elkridge, Md.; two daughters, Donna Huott of Silver Spring and Kelly Davis of Kingsport, Tenn; three sisters, Mary Bartlett of Montgomery, Helen Maggiore of Buffalo, N.Y. and Lynne Dreher of Bowie, Md.; two brothers, Allan Woodell of Huntingtown, Md. and Joseph Woodell of Gambrills, Md.; and 14 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Steven Woodell-Cangemi, and a brother, Harry Woodell. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, 4101 Norbeck Road, Silver Spring. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring. A family visitation will be at 1:30 p.m. today with public visitation from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at Hines-Rinaldi’s, Silver Spring.

Edna Ardry Sargent
Edna Ardry Sargent, 91, of Beacon Falls, Conn., sister of a city woman, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at Beacon Brook Health Center, after a long illness. She was the widow of Horton L. Sargent. She was retired from Uniroyal, Inc. where she worked for more than 44 years. She was a member of St. Michael’s Church and its Ladies Guild. She was a member of Beacon Falls Senior Citizens. Born July 2, 1909 in Drifting, she was a daughter of Harry and Cora Eisenhower Ardry. Surviving are a brother, Clair Ardry of Altoona; two sisters, Viola Bashnick of this city and Laura Aderhold of Jackson Mich. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Fred, Ralph, Edward and Bernard Ardry and four sisters, Mary Giordano, Margaret Ardry, Martha Kreger and Lulu Mahl. The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Buckmiller’s, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck, Conn, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Mildred M. Sheasley Apker
JERSEY SHORE - Mildred M. Sheasley Apker, 79, of Jersey Shore, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Jersey Shore hospital. Her husband, Brady B. Apker, died in November of 1999. She was employed as a welder at Piper Aircraft Corp. during World War II and was a seamstress at Woolrich Woolen Mills. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and country music. Born Oct. 12, 1920, in Loganton, she was a daughter of James C. and Violet Zellers Sheasley. Surviving is a nephew, Kenneth Poley of Lebanon, Tenn., and several cousins. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Sheasley. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today at Mount Zion Cemetery, Loganton, with the Rev. Clyde Worley officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Helt Hanna Klines’, 320 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall.

Richard MacMullan
LIBERTY - Richard MacMullan, 71, of Liberty, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at home. He was retired from Westinghouse as a computer consultant. Born Feb. 13, 1929, in Norristown, he was a son of Lloyd and Wynona Ecoff. Surviving is a sister, Anne Campbell of Lansdale. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Norristown. Arrangements are being handled by Freeberg’s, 120 N. Williamson Road, Blossburg.

Harry A. Ault
Harry A. Ault, 61, formerly of Williamsport, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in Boulder, Colo. He worked for QPAX.com. Inc. in Boulder.He was a graduate of Williamsport High School and Dartmouth College. Surviving are, a son, Harry of San Jose, Calif.; three daughters, Wanda Conolly of Norristown, N.J., Kim VanDeventer of Mendham, N.J., and Lisa Melville of Medfield, Mass.; and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be held at the convenience of the family.

Brett E. Bennett,

COGAN STATION - Brett E. Bennett, 26, of 2146 Pleasant Valley Road died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at C.H. Waltz Sons Inc., Route 973, as a result of an accident. He was a mechanic there and previously worked at General Rental in Montoursville. He and his wife, the former Melissa A. Myers, would have observed their fifth wedding anniversary Nov. 18. Born March 9, 1974, in this city, he was a son of Melvin E. and Carol L. Winder Bennett. Bennett was a member of the Loyalsock Valley Antique Association. He was a graduate of Montoursville Area High School. Surviving, besides his wife and parents, are his paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Dorland E. Bennett of Cogan Station; and maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Winder of Robbinsville, N.C.; a daughter, Katrina J. at home; two brothers Mark L . of Marion, N.Y., and Terry L. of South Williamsport; and a sister, Lynette J. Bower of Montoursville. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kevin, in 1987. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday, at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with Pastor Lou Dichiacchio of the Independent Bible Baptist Church, Montoursville, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Phyllis A. Entz
MUNCY - Phyllis A. Entz, 64, of 310 W. Penn St., died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. Arrangements are being handled by Betzer’s, 108 N. Main St.

Rebecca L. Harman
Rebecca L. Harman, 41, of 867 Memorial Ave. died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000 in Valley View Nursing Center. She and her husband, Michael J. Harman Sr., observed their 7th wedding anniversary Aug. 7. She was a homemaker. She was a member of The Door Fellowship. Born, June 10, 1959, in this city, she was a daughter of Robert and Jean Jewell Deeter. Surviving, besides her husband, are her parents; a daughter, Jacinta Deeter of this city; four stepsons, Michael J., Leroy A., Timothy A. and Anthony M. Harman, all of this city; a brother, Michael L. Deeter of this city; three sisters, Roberta A. Petion, Tina M. Deeter, and Bonnie J. Deeter, all of this city; and 11 stepgrandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Julia Black. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Maneval’s 500 W. Fourth St., with the Revs. Mark and Margaret Holcomb of the Door Fellowship officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Dr. Earl L. Lentz Jr.,

LOCK HAVEN - Dr. Earl L. Lentz Jr., 76, of 119 N. Summit St., died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000 in Lock Haven Hospital. He and his wife, the former Dorothy M. Schrock, observed their 52nd wedding anniversary this year. He graduated from Lock Haven High School, Penn State University and Lincoln Chiropractic College. He was a former president of the Lock Haven School Board. He was a past president of the Lock Haven Council of Churches and Synagogues, and was past superintendent of the First Evangelical United Brethren Church. He was a chairman of the Pennsylvania Board of Chiropractics.He was a past chairman of the Clinton County Republican Committee. He served as delegate to the 1964 Republican Convention in San Francisco. He ran for the State Senate in 1966. He served two terms as a Clinton County commissioner during the 1980s. He was a member of Lafayette Lodge 199. F &AM; the Williamsport Consistory; Jaffa Shrine; American Legion Post 131; Elks Lodge 182, and the Kiwanis Club. Born, Aug. 31, 1924, in Sunbury, he was a son of Earl L. and Hilda Getz Lentz. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son,William D. of Kent, Ohio; a daughter, Beth Ann Spieler of West Newberry, Mass; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Woolrich Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Walker’s, 231 High St., Flemington.

Gertha D. Thomas
JERSEY SHORE - Gertha D. Thomas, 86, of Chad Garden Apartments, 1324 Walnut St., died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, in ManorCare Nursing Center, where she had lived since July. A bookkeeper, she retired from Rummings Blue Stone and worked part-time for the Jersey Shore Livestock and Sales Barn, Antes Fort. She previously worked for Penn Clay Products, Central Cable and Dirk’s Farm and Tractor Supply Co. She was a member of the Jersey Shore Fairplay Gospel Church, where she was Sunday school superintendent and on the missionary board. She was a past member of the church’s Women’s Society and received its Dorcas Award for good works and benevolence. She formerly was a member of the Walnut Street Baptist Church and superintendent of its junior Sunday school. She was a member and past president of the Jersey Shore Garden Club and a past member of the Lycoming County Board of Elections. She was a 1932 graduate of Jersey Shore High School. Born in Linden July 25, 1914, she was a daughter of James and Cora Laubach Thomas. Surviving are two nephews, Richard L. Thomas of Jersey Shore and J. Kenneth Thomas Jr. of Harleysville, and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, R. Benjamin and J. Kenneth. Arrangements are being handled by Rearick-Carpenter’s, 1001 Allegheny St.

Elwood V. Weeks
WELLSBORO - Elwood V. Weeks, 68, of Wellsboro RR 2 died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre. He and his wife, the former Delores Iona Haner, observed their sixth wedding anniversary April 23. He was a laborer for various manufacturing companies. He was a member of Apostolic Pentecostal House of Prayer. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Born June 12, 1932, in Colesburg, he was a son of Benjamin C. Swan and Ruby Effie Weeks. Surviving, besides his wife, are four sons, Thomas Haner of Galeton, Robert and Steven, both of Wellsboro, and Dennis of Altoona; four stepsons, Brigg Schweigart of Warren, Sam Schweigart of Mills, Frank and Tom Perkins, both in North Carolina; three daughters, Debra Berg and Linda, both of Galeton, and Cindy Farrel in Florida; two stepdaughters, Jackie Schweigart of Shippensburg and Willa Perkins in North Carolina; three brothers, Benjamin of Tioga, Elvin Swan of Westfield and Delbert Swan of Elkin; four sisters, Ellen Tillingus in Florida, Frances Salvage in California, Beatrice Quiggley of Warren and Shirley Bell of Westfield; 25 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Petie and a sister, Carla Swan. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., with his son, Robert, officiating. Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery, Galeton. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight.

Thomas J. Welshans
MONTGOMERY - Thomas J. Welshans, 90, of 86 Warren St. died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, in the emergency room of Muncy Valley Hospital, after being stricken at home. His wife, the former Naomi M. Shaffer, died in 1994. He retired in 1998 as an accountant for Lycoming County. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church here. He was a member of Muncy Lodge 299, F&AM. He was a 1928 graduate of Montgomery-Clinton High School and a Bucknell University graduate. Surviving are a daughter, M. Joan Taylor, with whom he lived; five grandchildren, Tom Taylor, Pamela Mowrey, Debra Allison, Lisa Grosline and Jacqueline Murray; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held in Fairview Cemetery, Clinton Township, at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Barry Bence, his pastor, officiating.The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Betzer’s, 40 E. Houston Ave.

James W. West, Jr.
James W. West, Jr., 83, of 760 Butternut Grove Road, Montoursville, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. His wife, the former Olivebella E. Egli died in 1999. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Club, South Williamsport and the Montoursville Golden Agers. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was the retired owner-operator of West Disposal Service. He was a member of Hoffman United Methodist Church. Born, Sept. 11, 1917 in this city, he was a son of James W. and Edith Hinkal West. Surviving are two sons, Paul W. and Edward H., both of Montoursville; two daughters, LaReine M. Ewing of this city, and Elizabeth Ashley of Montoursville; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons, James F. and Richard. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville. Burial will be in the Montoursville Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Jerry Lee Combs
Jerry Lee Combs, 52, of Jersey Shore, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. He and his wife, the former Diana Lomison, observed their 29th wedding anniversary Aug. 7. He taught English at Williamsport High School for 27 years, retiring in June 1999, and taught for three years at Unaka High School, Carter County, Tenn. A 1965 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, Oak Ridge, Tenn., he received his degrees in English and psychology from Milligan College, Milligan, Tenn. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and the Audubon Society. He was a member of Walker Hunting Camp, Centre County. A member of Lycoming Christian Church, he was an elder, deacon, youth leader, Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir. Born Jan. 2, 1948, in McKeesport, he was a son of James Robert and Constance C. Combs. Surviving, besides his wife, is his mother Constance C. Coleman of Oak Ridge. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Robert Jr. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Saturday in the church, Linden, with the Revs. Mark Beard, Ron Savits and Don Fornwalt, officiating. Burial will be in Schencks Cemetery, Howard Township. Arrangements are being handled by Neff’s, 837 Main St., Howard.
