Mary E. McDermit, 77, of Farrandsville died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, in Susqueview Nursing Home, Lock Haven. Her husband, Arthur F. McDermit, died Dec. 3, 1999. She retired in 1984 as a laboratory technician for Lock Haven Hospital after more than 20 years. Born April 18, 1923, in Colebrook Township, she was a daughter of Frank Wesley and Helen Gertrude Egan Toner. Surviving are a sister, Lois Copenhaver of Caldwell; two brothers, Thomas Toner of Seabrook, N.H. and Jack Toner of Caldwell; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara McNatt, and a son, Kenneth. The funeral will be at 7:30 tonight at Helt Hanna Kline’s, 232 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall, with the Rev. James Van Zandt, officiating. Burial will be in Caldwell Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6:30 to 7:30.
Phyllis A. Entz
MUNCY - Phyllis A. Entz, 64, of 310 W. Penn St. died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. She and her husband, Walter R. Entz, observed their 47th wedding anniversary March 21. She retired in 1983 from GTE Sylvania, Montoursville, and previously was employed by Glamorize, Muncy. She attended Muncy Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading, traveling, camping and attending shows. Born Dec. 29, 1935, in Upper Fairfield Township, she was a daughter of Cleon L. and Lena A. Plank Yonkin. Surviving, besides her husband, are a daughter, Virginia L. Phillips of Muncy; a son, Larry W. of Muncy; two sisters, Joyce Waltz of Montoursville and Betty Lou Moyer of Muncy; five grandchildren, Stephanie and Joshua King, Kellie Scampone, Rebecca Bomboy and Lacy Phillips; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the church, Penn and Market Streets, with the Rev. D. Gene Patterson, officiating. Burial will be in Muncy Cemetery. Gerald C. Fisher
Gerald C. Fisher, 83, of Cornelius, Ore., a former city resident, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, in Ohsu, Ore. He and his wife, the former Marian Miller, observed their 64th wedding anniversary Sept. 5. He was employed at the former Bethlehem Steel and area saw mills. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of Williamsport High School and received a college scholarship to play football. He was a member of Forest Grove Seventh Day Adventist Church, Forest Grove, Ore. Born Jan. 1, 1917, in Lewistown, he was a son of Clair H. and Maggie Haines Fisher. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Rebecca Baker of Forest Grove; and a brother, Jack E. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. today in the church, with the Rev. David Giles, officiating. Burial will be in Willamette National Cemetery. Leland C. Hart
WELLSBORO - Leland C. “Zibby” Hart, 82, of Wellsboro RR 3 died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, in Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. He and his wife, the former Dora Andrews, observed their 54th wedding anniversary Aug. 17. He retired in 1978 from the former Wellsboro Division of Corning Glass Works, after 32 years. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Liberty Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed hunting, motorcycle riding, antiques and traveling. Born Sept. 14, 1918, in Nauvoo, he was a son of Emery E. and Bertha Casebeer Hart. Surviving, besides his wife, are three daughters, Junita H. Barrett of Columbia Cross Roads, Shirley H. Foster of Elkland and Rhonda Benson of Miami, Fla.; a son, Paul H. of Wellsboro; a sister, Lillian Sargent of Wellsboro; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Floyd T., and a sister, Mable Dexter. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., with the Rev. Harry Dow, officiating. Rebecca L. Harman, 41, of 867 Memorial Ave. died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, in Valley View Nursing Center. She and her husband, Michael J. Harman Sr., observed their 7th wedding anniversary Aug. 7. She was a homemaker. She was a member of The Door Fellowship. Born, June 10, 1959, in this city, she was a daughter of Robert and Jean Jewell Deeter. Surviving, besides her husband, are a daughter, Jacinta Deeter of this city; four stepsons, Michael J., Leroy A., Timothy A. and Anthony M. Harman, all of this city; a brother, Michael L. Deeter of this city; three sisters, Roberta A. Petion, Tina M. Deeter, and Bonnie J. Deeter, all of this city; and 11 step-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Julia Black. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Maneval’s 500 W. Fourth St., with the Revs. Mark and Margaret Holcomb of the Door Fellowship officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. MANSFIELD - Mary E. Bastian, 102, of Mansfield died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at Broad Acres Nursing Home, Wellsboro. Her husband, Lloyd F. Bastian, died in 1973. She was a retired Realtor, published author and artist. A member of the former Elizabeth Rebekah Lodge, she was a past Noble Grand and past state president of Ladies Auxiliary Patriarch Militants. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. Born Jan. 21, 1898, in Sylvania, she was a daughter of John and Lillian Mae Watkins Pickering. Surviving are three sons, Lloyd F. II of Green Cove Springs, Fla., Jack R. of Corning, N.Y., and Glenn P. of Blossburg; two daughters, Virginia Smith and Fay Jones, both of Mansfield; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. A private funeral will be at Wilston’s, 18 N. Main St., with the Rev. Joyce Treas, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
George A. Brown
George A. Brown, 75, of 63 Scenic View Drive, Linden, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, after an extended illness. He and his wife, the former Wanda S. Cohick, observed their 29th wedding anniversary Feb. 5. He was a custodian for the Williamsport Area School District, a farmer and a part-time Woodward Township employee. He was a former member of Pine Run Grange. He was a member of Lycoming Christian Church. Born March 28, 1925, in Linden, he was a son of G. Clark and Florence Marshall Brown. Surviving, besides his wife, are four stepdaughters, Rita Sharp of Port Charlotte, Fla., Tina Lehman, Jacalyn Harter and Kathryn Lose, all of this city; two stepsons, James and Victor Edwards, both of this city; 18 stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lee and Harold. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church, 20 Chapel Hill Road, Linden. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Woodward Township Cemetery. Officiating will be the Revs. Mark A. Beard, his pastor and Donald D. Savits, pastor of Newberry Church of Christ, officiating. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Sanders’, 821 Diamond St.
Maxwell E. Hoadley
Maxwell E. Hoadley, 80, of 124 S. Fifteenth, Lewisburg, a former city resident, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at Evangelical Community Hospital. He and his wife, the former Miriam Birchard, observed their 56th wedding anniversary July 15. He retired in 1981 as production manager of American Home Foods, Milton, and was the company’s labor negotiator. A World War II Air Force flight engineer, he was a life member of Milton American Legion. He was a 1938 graduate of Williamsport High School and a 1943 graduate of Penn State, where he was a board member for Tau Kappa Epsilon. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg, a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, a trustee and elder. Born June 15, 1920, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was a son of Edward and Hazel Maxwell Hoadley. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Susan Hoadley Smith of Bethesda, Md., and Carol Hoadley Pyers of Sinking Spring; and five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Emily, Julie, Hilary and Randal. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the church, 18 Market St., Lewisburg, with the Revs. Ted Ulp, interim pastor, and David Anderson, former pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Lewisburg Cemetery, with a graveside flag service performed by area veterans. Arrangements are being handled by Cronrath’s, South Second and Louis Streets, Lewisburg.
E. Wayne A. Frey
E. Wayne A. Frey, 66, a former Muncy resident, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at St. Clair Hospital in Mount Lebanon. He and his wife, the former Deonne G. Hartman, celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary Feb. 25. He was a self-employed manufacturers’ representative. A former math and science teacher at the Montoursville High School, he was also a math teacher at the former Williamsport Area Community College and employed at Sprout-Waldron Co. In the 1960s, he was a part-time writer for the Sun-Gazette. He was a former member of the Muncy Jaycees. He served on the board of the Muncy Pool Assocation. He was a founder and former president of Kane Little League and member of the Kane Brotherhood of the Protective Order of Elks Lodge 329. He graduated from Canton High School and Lycoming College. Born March 23, 1934, in Shunk, he was a son of Edwin E. and Florence Decker Frey. Surviving, besides his wife, are five sons, E. Duane of Mount Lebanon, Darrell E. of Sandy Lake, Scott L. of Alexandria, Va., Douglas A. and Jamie M., both of Upper St. Clair.; a brother, Sheldon of Morristown, N.J.; two sisters, Irene Foust of Montoursville and Alice Eastham of Athens; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Lawrence, and a sister, Dorothy. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Wallis-Grenoble’s 121 S. Main St., Muncy, with the Rev. R. Frances Katherine Myers
LOCK HAVEN - Frances Katherine Myers, 87, formerly of Carter Tower, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at Lock Haven Hospital after being stricken at Fulmers Personal Care, where she lived for two years. Her husband, Robert Allen Myers, died July 31, 1972. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church. Born July 13, 1913, in Metamora, Ill., she was a daughter of Bruce and Florence Bower Rosencrans. Surviving are a stepdaughter, Cathy Zerbie of Vero Beach, Fla.; a brother, William Rosencrans of Homeland, Calif.; and a sister, Bessie Springman of Muncy. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Yost-Gedon’s, 121 W. Main St., with the Rev. James VanZandt, her pastor, officiating. Jerry Lee Combs
Jerry Lee Combs, 52, of Jersey Shore died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. He and his wife, the former Diana Lomison, noted their 29th wedding anniversary Aug. 7. He taught English at Williamsport Area High School for 27 years, retiring in June 1999, and had taught at Unaka High School, Carter County, Tenn. He was a 1965 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Milligan College, Milligan, Tenn. He was a member of the Boy Scouts, the Audubon Society and Walker Hunting Camp, Centre County. A member of Lycoming Christian Church, he was an elder, deacon, youth leader, Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir. Born Jan. 2, 1948, in McKeesport, he was a son of James Robert and Constance C. Combs. Surviving, besides his wife, is his mother, Constance C. Coleman of Oak Ridge. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Robert Jr. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Saturday in the church, Linden, with the Revs. Mark Beard, Ron Savits and Don Fornwalt officiating. William P. Eisenhower
MILL HALL - William P. Eisenhower, 75, of 1268 Long Run Road died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at Manor Care, Jersey Shore. He and his wife, the former Evelyn L. Berry, observed their 54th wedding anniversary June 6. He retired in 1988 as a foreman at Hammermill Paper Co. after 34 years. An Army veteran of World War II, he received the Purple Heart. He was a member of Lock Haven American Legion. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. He graduated from Mill Hall High School in 1943. He was a member of United Church of Christ, Salona. Born April 3, 1925, in Salona, he was a son of William C. and Elsie Grieb Eisenhower. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Thomas W. and Edward P., both of Avis; a daughter, Connie L. Keys of Clayton, N.J.; five brothers, Kenneth of Mill Hall, Melvin of Long Island, N.Y., Glenn of Little Rock, Ark., David of Chambersburg and Elmer of Eagleville; a sister, Charlotte of Mill Hall; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. MIFFLINBURG – Esther Vought Musser, 88, of 8 Ward Way died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, in The Riverwoods, Lewisburg. She and her husband, Leon Miller Musser, celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary June 26. She was an elementary teacher at Linntown Elementary School, Lewisburg. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday and Vacation Bible school. She was a president of the United Methodist Women and a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association. Born July 26, 1912, in Ulster, Bradford County, she was a daughter of Sumner Horton and Mabel Gillette Vought. Surviving, besides her husband, are a daughter, Marilyn M. Moyer of Philadelphia; a son, Duane R. of Boalsburg; a sister, Marjorie Louise Myers of Lakeland, Fla.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Wesley Vought, in 1926. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Schwartz’s, 247 Chestnut St., with the Rev. Ronald A. Warfle officiating. Interment will be in Hill Top Cemetery. GROVER - Floyd Eugene Avery, 63, of Grover, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at home. He and his wife, the former Virginia Stone, observed their 43rd wedding anniversary June 8. He retired from the former Pennsylvania Railroad in 1973. He owned and operated Our House Restaurant. He was a founder and director of the Canton Apple and Cheese Festival. He was recently appointed to the board of Canton’s Rekindle the Spirit. In addition, he was a member of the former Canton Jaycees. He was a member of the Grover Church of Christ. He was a member of the Williamsport Herb Guild. He was a graduate of Canton High School. Born Nov. 17, 1936, at Grover, he was a son of Gerald D. Sr. and Lenora Morgan Avery. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, LouAnn of Roaring Branch; a foster son, Ronald Swimley of Gillett; a sister, Eunice McFall of Grover; three brothers, Alvah and Richard, both of Canton and Burton of Elmira, N.Y.; and his stepmother, Mabell Avery of Grover. He was predeceased by a brother, Gerald Jr.; and two sisters, Maxine and Charlene. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Pepper’s, Springbrook Drive, Canton, with the Rev. Willard Strunk officiating. Burial will be in the Grover Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and noon to 1 p.m Wednesday at the funeral home.
