George R. Alexander
The funeral will be Thursday for George R. Alexander, 44, of Liberty RR 1, who died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at home. He was a truck driver for Ward Manufacturing, Blossburg. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. Born Nov. 24, 1955, in Blossburg, he was a son of George H. and Barbara Houghtling Alexander. Surviving are his mother of Wyalusing; his wife, the former Susan Moretz of Liberty; two daughters, Jamie of Dover, Del. and Bobbie of Liberty; three brothers, James of Monroeton, Gary of New Albany and Ben of Wyalusing; a sister, Shirley Beach of Boynton, Beach, Fla.; a stepsister, Judy Gastruck of this city; and a granddaughter, Renee D. Constant. He was preceded in death by a brother, William, and a stepbrother, David. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. at Zwicharowski’s, 314 Granger St., Blossburg, with the Rev. Daniel May, officiating. Burial will be in Ogdensburg Cemetery, Ogdensburg. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Gladys Burgess
Gladys Burgess, 92, formerly of Cemetery Street, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at Roseview Center. Her husband, Robert Everett Burgess, died in 1976. She was a seamstress in New York City for 25 years and worked at Gertz Department Store there. She was a graduate of Williamsport High School. She attended Ebeneezer Baptist Church. Born June 9, 1908, in this city, she was a daughter of Thomas J. and Lavina Allen Irvin. Surviving are a sister, Esther Irvin of Washington, D.C.; five nieces, Lavina Moore, Daphne Anderson,and Vivian Belle, all of this city, Lois Thompson of Morestown, N.J. and Esther Smith of Norristown; and a nephew, Samuel Belle of this city. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ezmond and Raymond Irvin, and three sisters, Vivian Stills, Cordelia Harvey and Charlotte Belle. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Allen and Redmond’s, 331 Elmira St., with Deacon Kenneth Myers, officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m.

Robert James Bridgman
MANSFIELD -Robert James Bridgman, 68, of this borough died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, in Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. He and his wife, Earlene Bridgman, observed their 45th wedding anniversary Sept. 10. He was professor of math at Mansfield University, retiring in 1992, and has since tutored university students in math. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Western Michigan College and his master’s from the University of Michigan. He served on the boards of the food pantry, Mansfield, and Laurel Mountain Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. He was an Army veteran of the Korea War. He was a Mansfield University sports fan. A long distance runner, he competed in races almost every weekend for the past 25 years. He was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Mansfield and formerly at United Methodist Church. Born July 29, 1932, in Allegan, Mich., he was a son of Row William and Eva Claire Bridgman. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Jeff R. of Dillsburg. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church, corner of Wellsboro and Academy Streets, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas D. Thomas officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Scureman’s, 130 S. Main St.

Genevieve Fogelman;
Leaves 81 decedents
MUNCY - Genevieve E. Felix Fogelman, 84, of 46 Chestnut Street Extension died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, in Muncy Valley Hospital. Her first husband, Francis Felix, died Aug. 17, 1964 and her second husband, Paul E. Fogel, died Aug. 9, 1994. She retired from the Muncy Valley Hospital skilled nursing unit as a nurse’s aide, she had worked at the former Lysock View County Nursing Home, now Valley View. She and her first husband owned and operated restaurants in the Lewisburg, Milton and Mifflinburg areas and owned and operated Dutch Inn Restaurant in Muncy from 1949 until 1962. She was a member of Pleasant View Weslean Church, Muncy. She enjoyed yard sales, cooking, baking and gardening. Born Sept. 13, 1916, in Rochester, N.Y., she was a daughter of Alex and Alice Creek Patt. Surviving are a son, John L. Felix of Montgomery; a daughter, Jo Ann L. Balliet of Muncy; a stepson, William J. Fogleman of Muncy; three stepdaughters, Patricia A. Fog of Muncy, Mary Crawford of Montgomery and Gloria Faus in California; a brother, Edmond Patt of Wellsboro; four sisters, Lottie Stevens of Tioga, Marion Ranck of Millerton, Patty Duford of Rochester, N.Y. and Dorothy Green of Bedford; 46 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Francis E. Felix Jr.; two stepsons, Robert Fogelman and Maurice Felix; and two sisters, Christina Stinehart Loretta Cochran. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the church, 994 East Penn St., with the Rev. Ronald N. Sytsma, officiating. Burial will be in Muncy Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Wallis-Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St.

Albert W. Miller Jr.
Albert W. Miller Jr., 69, of Main St., Blossburg, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, in Soldiers and Sailors Hospital, Wellsboro. Arrangements are being handled by Zwicharowski’s, 314 Granger St., Blossburg.

Alvin E. Miller
HUGHESVILLE - Alvin E. Miller, 89, formerly of Muncy Valley RR 1, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, in the Muncy Valley Hospital skilled nursing unit. He and his wife, the former Letha Phillips, were married for 72 years. A laborer, he retired from Armstrong Sawmill, and worked in sawmills throughout the area. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid outdoorsman. Born Nov. 26, 1910, in Pennsdale, he was a son of Russell and Elva Flick Miller. Surviving are two sons, Dennis of Muncy Valley and Robert of Muncy; two daughters, Marian Sanner of Hughesville and Carolyn Statts of Muncy Valley; 11 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Warren and Walter Miller, both of Ithaca, N.Y.; and two sisters, Sara Millheim of Hughesville and Grace Phillips of Slidell, La. He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Roger and Barry Sanner; and by six brothers and two sisters. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McCarty-Thomas’s, 557 E. Water St., with his son-in-law, Ronald S. Statts, officiating. Burial will be in Franklin (Stoneheap) Cemetery, Unityville. Friends may call from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jean Kathryn Moore
COGAN STATION - Jean Kathryn Moore, 72, of 220 Beach Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at home. Her husband, Wendle R. Moore, died Nov. 20 1997. She was a retired registered nurse for Dr. Joseph English and was a homemaker. She was a member of Hepburnville Baptist Church. She enjoyed bingo. Born Feb. 5, 1928, in Hepburnville, she was a daughter of Harris M. and Frances E. Hakes Ludwig. Surviving are her mother, Frances E. Fortner of this city; two sons, Harry B. and Wendle R. II, both of Cogan Station; three daughters, Karyl A. Otruba of Mansfield, Ruth E. Fink of Cogan Station and Kathryn J. of South Williamsdport; four sisters, June M. Zimmerman of Cogan Station, Mary Lee Hafer of Sayre, Dorothy L. Kiess of Balls Mills and Carol Ann Taylor of McKees Rocks; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a son, Mark Dana, and a brother, Donald E. Ludwig during World War II. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave., with the Rev Mark Mahserjian-Smith, her pasttor, officiating. Burial will be in Stotz Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday.

Steven L. Ransdorf
LOCK HAVEN – Steven L. Ransdorf, 45, of this city died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, in Lock Haven Hospital. He was employed as a track foreman for the Norfolk Southern Railroad Railroad. He was a 1972 graduate of Renovo High School. Born here Oct. 8, 1954, he was the son of Cyril and Anna J. Andrews Ransdorf. Surviving, besides his mother, are a companion, Lisa A. Newman; a son, John D. of Woolrich; two daughters, Mary K. Ransdorf of Beech Creek and Susan M. Newman at home; two half-brothers, Joseph M. Ransdorf of Las Vegas, Nev. and Jan V. Ransdorf of Montoursville; and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by a half-sister, Carol J. Heller. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Walker’s, 231 High St., Flemington, with the Rev. Mark Riley officiating. Interment will be in Woolrich Cemetery. Friends may call the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Eleanor M. Riggle
Eleanor M. Riggle, 75, formerly of 301 Church St., South Williamsport, died Mon Oct. 9, 2000, in Kramm Nursing Home, Watsontown. She was employed by Hope Enterprises for many years. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and bingo. Born July 13, 1925, in this city, she was a daughter of Wilbur A. and Lydia Eva Williamson Riggle. Surviving are two sisters, Shirley J. Ranck of Watsontown and Florence M. Metzger of this city; five nieces; and two nephews. She was preceded in death by two nephews. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Noll’s, 1 E. Central Ave, South Williamsport, with the Rev. Margaret M. McCarty, White Deer Valley Baptist Church, Allentown officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m.

Clyde Richard Smith Sr.
JERSEY SHORE – Clyde Richard Smith Sr., 85, formerly of Lock Haven RR 2, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000 at ManorCare. His wife, the former Evelyn Long, died in 1998. He was employed as a test pilot and design engineer with Piper Aircraft, Lock Haven. Following his retirement, he served as an aircraft parts manufacturer representative. He was president of Lock Haven Lions Club. He was a member of the Piper Aviation Museum Board. He enjoyed flying. Born Dec. 21, 1914, in Clarks Summit, he was a son of Harry H. and Lillilan Rosenkrans Smith. Surviving are three sons, Clyde R. “Skip” Jr. of Lock Haven RR 2, Kurtes D. of McElhattan and Judson S. of Danville; a daughter, E. Lenore Smith Phillips of Salona; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Yost-Gedon’s, 121 W. Main St., Lock Haven, with the Rev. John A. Snyder, of the Lord Fellowship Church officiating. Interment will in Fairdale Cemetery, Fairdale. Friends may call the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Linda M. Shuman
Linda M. Shuman, 58, of 997 Lycoming Mall Road, Pennsdale, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at Manor Care Health Services, South. She was a former resident of Lock Haven and Mill Hall. She was a member of Castanea Fire Co. Born June 25, 1942, in Rochester, Minn., she was a daughter of Al Snyder and Marian Burkuff. Surviving are her parents in Minnesota; four daughters, Jodi L. Swank of Pennsdale, Kimberly S. Perreault of Virginia Beach, Va., Robyn L. Stonerock of McElhattan and Kristina N. James of Mackeyville; four sons, Paul E. Williams of Mill Hall, Michael W. James of Cogan Station, Timothy E. James of Lamar and Jeffrey A. James of Montoursville; two sisters, Susan Day of Rochester, N.Y and Patti Peters in Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St., with Sister Celine Smith, chaplain of Manor Care Health Services, officiating. Burial will be private. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 3 p.m.

Stanley R. Stebbins
Stanley Ray Stebbins, 64, of 3274 Lycoming Creek Road died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at home. He and his wife, the former Norma Jean Kirk, would have observed their 20th wedding anniversary Nov. 8. He enjoyed woodworking and reading books. Born Jan. 5, 1936 in Allegheny County, he was a son of Earl and Esther Kushlok Stebbins. Surviving are two sons, David and Ray Stebbins, both of Pittsburgh; a stepson, David Lang; two stepdaughters, Alix Lang and Mari An Rolewicz; a brother, Richard Stebbins of San Antonio; a sister, Karen Perry, of New Hampshire; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Lycoming Centre Presbyterian Church, 656 W. Creek Road, Cogan Station, with the Rev. William J. Younger, church pastor, officiating.

William S. Twist
MILTON - William S. Twist, 78, of 24 Park Lan, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, in Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. He was the father of a local man. He and his wife, the former Corrine N. Noll, were married for 54 years. He was a machinist at AC&F Industries, in this borough, retiring in 1980. He had graduated from Milton High School in 1941. Twist was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy in both the Atlantic and Pacific campaigns. He was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Masonic Lodge 256, the Royal Arch Chapter 298 and was a life member of the Shimer Hose Co., all of Milton. Born here April 29, 1922, he was a son of Thomas E. and Ethel E. Cithburt Twist. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Sandra L. Shreck of Williamsport; two sons, Richard W. of Cumberland, Md. and Todd L. of Loyalsock Township; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Phyllis J. Hacker of Hamburg, N.Y. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church, Mahoning Manor. Officiating will be Rev. MarthaSue D. Moll. Friends may call from 10-11 a.m. in the church. Arrangements are being handled by Shaw’s, 400 N. Front St.

Merril Wert
LOCK HAVEN - Merril “Noah” Wert, 87, of 140 N. Highland St. died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at home. He and his wife, the former Mary Bauman, observed their 62nd wedding anniversary Oct. 8. He most recently worked in the equipment room at Keystone Central School District, retiring in 1998. He retired in 1978 from L. H. Laundry. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served aboard the U.S.S. Edward D.D. 619 and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the U.S.S. Edwards D.D. 619 reunion club. He was a member of the Lock Haven/Mill Hall Gold K Kiwanis and White Birch Hunting Camp. He was a Lock Haven football fan. He was a member of First Church of Christ. Born May 3, 1913, in Gregg Township, Centre County, he was a son of Rubin and Leah Rieter Wert. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, John E. of Lock Haven; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence “Rookie”, Albert and infant, Paul and two sisters, Sarah Wert Dietz and Mary Wert Leck. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the church, Vesper and Water Streets, with the Rev. Michael Abernathy, officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park. Friends may call at Walker’s, 231 High St., Flemington, from 7 to 9 tonight.

Carmen P. VanTuyl
A memorial service will be Monday for Carmen P. VanTuyl, a former city resident, who died Sunday, July 9, 2000. The service will be at 1 p.m. in Church of the Savior, Memorial Avenue and Grier Streets.

Hester Houseknecht
Hester Houseknecht, 88, of 2381 Rt. 405 Highway, Muncy, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of the Muncy Valley Hospital, where she resided since 1998. Her first husband, David E. Frey, died Feb. 2, 1954. Her second husband, C. LaRue Houseknecht, died Feb. 2, 1998. She retired after 19 years as a matron at the state correctional institution at Muncy. She also worked at the former Weldon Manufacturing of Muncy. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees. She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. She attended Montgomery Area High School. Born May 9, 1912, in Montgomery, she was a daughter of Jacob and Katherine Wertz McCormick. Surviving are a son, Donald E. Frey, El Paso, Texas, and a daughter, Laura D. Yoder, and granddaughter, Debra Yoder, both of New Castle, Del. She was predeceased by seven brothers, Albert, Harold, Chester, Earl, Franklin, Donald, and Boyd McCormick, and three sisters, Mae Kahler, Ellen Harman and Ruth Gottschall. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family, at Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy, with the Rev. Dr. Donald P. Edwards, pastor of St. Andrew Evangelical Lutheran Church, Muncy, officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Wallis-Grenoble’s, 121 South Main Street, Muncy.
