LOCK HAVEN - Charles R. Ryan, 89, of Lock Haven RR, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Manorcare in Jersey Shore. During the Depression, he was employed at the former New York Central Railroad. He was an electrician for the former Pennsylvania Railroad in the Renovo shops from 1939 to 1976. He also worked at the former Penn Central Railroad in Newberry from 1976 until he retired in 1981. Ryan was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. He attended school here. Born here on Dec. 12, 1910, he was a son of Harry J. and Linnetta Beck Ryan. Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth Genevieve Richards; a daughter, Linnetta A. Long of Monticello, Fla.; a son, Michael L. of Lock Haven; two sisters, Rose L. Barrett of Lock Haven and Eva Mae Benson of Casper, Wyo.; four brothers, Anthony and Leo, both of Albuquerque, N.M., Mark of Jersey Shore and Joseph of Vanessa, Ill., two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, 310 W. Water St., with Msgr. Dennis R. Boggs officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery. There is no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Moriarty-Dutcavich’s, 112 E. Church St.

WELLSBORO - Elizabeth H. Jones, 79, of Wellsboro RR 3, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at her home. She was a retired director of medical records at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. Born July 15, 1921, in Evanston, Ill, she was a daughter of Hugh McAlister and Kathleen Dearle North. Surviving are a daughter, Kathleen K. Hale of Wellsboro RR 3; a son, Arthur Thomas Kupferer of San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Shelby North of Georgetown, S.C., and one grandson. A private funeral service will be held at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., with the Rev. Gregory Hinton, rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, officiating.
Robert Wright
Robert Wright, 69, of Green Street died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at home. He retired from the former Reliable Furniture Co., where he was employed as a delivery truck driver for five years. He served in the Army from 1947 to 1953, attaining the rank of corporal. He was a former member of the Williamsport Elks. Wright enjoyed jazz music, building models and working on his car. At one time, he was an avid sportsman, playing football, basketball, baseball and boxing.
He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Garybrella “Gay” L. Brown, was his faithful companion for over 50 years. Born Sept. 2, 1931, in this city, he was a son of Edward and Pearl Wright Jenkins. Surviving are four sons, Victor Wright, Robert Wright and Roger Brown all of this city, and Robert Brown of Harrisburg; five daughters, Lorene Brown, of Tucson, Ariz., Pearl Brown and Sue Wright both of this city, Gaynella Smith and Roberta Dano both of Norfolk, Va.; two brothers, Edward Jenkins of this city and Joseph Harris of Temple Hills, Md; 16 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, 433 Walnut St., with the Rev. Spurgeon L. East, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy RR 2. Leslie Kathleen Confer
The service was Saturday for Leslie Kathleen Confer, 55, of Baldwin, Md., formerly of Pennsdale, who died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, after a lengthy illness. She and her husband, Michael V. Confer, observed their 31st wedding anniversary, June 21. She worked as a registered nurse in pediatrics. A 1963 graduate of Muncy High School, she was also a 1966 graduate of the former Williamsport Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Maryland. Born July 20, 1945, she was a daughter of Paul W. and Laura Bugbee Brown. Surviving, besides her husband, are her mother of South Williamsport; her father of Lancaster; two sons, M. Todd and Adam H., both of Baldwin; a daughter, Jennifer R. of Baldwin; and a brother, Paul D. of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Charles I. “Skip” Pardoe, 59, of 708 Narber Fry Road, Pennsdale, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, in a hunting accident in Sullivan County. He was employed by Kaiser Bros., Muncy for 5 years as a parts manager and previously at Fowler Motors, Shirns and the former Gibbs Pontiac, Hughesville. He was a 1959 graduate of Hughesville High School. A member of Muncy Presbyterian Church, he was a Sunday school teacher, an ordained church elder, past Sunday school superintendent a member of Promise Keepers and automotive technicians prayer fellowship. He was a member of Ticklish Rock Hunting Club, Sulfur Springs Gun Club, National Rifle Association and National Wild Turkey Federation. He was an instructor for the Pennsylvania State Hunters Safety program. He was an avid hunter. He was past president of Muncy Little League. Born April 14, 1941, in Danville, he was a son of Donald E. and Bessie Wintersteen Pardoe. Surviving are a son, Scott D. of Muncy; two brothers, Donald W. of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and Duane E. of Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada; a sister, Donna M. Nitz of Montgomery; and a grandson, Bryce E. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Muncy Presbyterian Church, East Penn St., Muncy, with his pastor the Rev. F. Leon Morgan, officiating. Kenneth R. Bortz Jr. 59, of Montgomery died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at home after an extended illness. He and his wife, the former Alice A. McCarthy, would have observed their 35th wedding anniversary Oct. 26. He was a self-employed truck driver associated with Milton Transportation. He was a veteran of the Coast Guard. He was a 1960 graduate of Montgomery High School. He enjoyed stock car racing. He was a member of New Covenant Assembly of God, Montgomery. Born Oct. 2, 1951, in Muncy Creek Township, Lycoming County, he was a son of Kenneth R. and Naomi R. Winder Bortz Sr. He was reared by his maternal grandmother C. Mae Winder. Surviving, besides his wife, are his mother, Naomi Gatlin of Eureka Calif.; two sons, Kenneth Scott of Mesa, Ariz. and James E. of this city; a sister, Beth Anne Brough of Watsontown; and four grandsons, Michael Timothy Damien and Devin. WELLSBORO - Elizabeth E. Hitesman, 95, of Cherry Street Extension died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, in Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. Her husband, John Calvin Hitesman died Jan. 5, 1983. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Mary Wells Chapter 452, Order of the Eastern Star; the Wellsboro Volunteer Fireman’s Auxiliary, and American Legion Post 84, Ladies Auxiliary. She was in the PTA and Band Mothers. She received the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame Citation for at least 50 years of voting in November elections. A member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, a member of its altar guild, women’s group and ladies guild. Born June 5, 1905, in Newfoundland, Canada, she was a daughter of John C. and Mary Ann Case Hopkins. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Ann Dreslin of Norristown; a son, Robert E., with whom she lived; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church, with the Rev Gregory Hinton, officiating. Burial will be in Muncy Cemetery. D. Jean Lorimer, 81, of 126 O’Neil Ave. died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000. Her husband, Clark Lorimer died Dec. 17, 1987. She retired from Rayovac in 1980. She was former treasurer of Rayovac Credit Union. She was a 1937 graduate of Montoursville High School. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Loyalsock. She enjoyed gardening and volunteer work. Born Jan. 6, 1919, in South Williamsport, she was a daughter of Fred J. and Bertha Mahaffey Moore. She was preceded in death by a brother, Fred J. Moore, Jr. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the church, Loyalsock, with the Rev. Jerry A. Cline, officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Frances L. Eiswert, 73, of 1505 Hepburn St. died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, in the Williamsport Hospital Emergency Room, after being stricken at home. Her husband, Carl H.Eiswert, died in 1989. She retired after 27 years at Weldon’s. She was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. Born, Feb. 15, 1927, she was a daughter of Andrew J. and Bessie Mae Hillyard Hill. Surviving are a brother, Melvin L. Hill of Greensburg; a sister, Sarah E. Graybill of this city; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Maneval’s 500 W. Siegfried "Sig" Dehler, 69, of Dushore died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, in Sullivan County. He was the husband of Ann Farley Dehler. He was owner of Dehler Realty since 1985. Prior to that, he and his wife owned and operated Dehler’s Decorating Center. He was a 20-year veteran of the Air Force. He served as president of the Dushore Lions Club. Born Dec. 12, 1930, in the Bronx, N.Y., he was a son of Hans and Mathilda Kaufman Dehler. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Mitchell of Pasadena, Calif., and John of New Albany; and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Goodrun Vandegrift. A private funeral service will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by P. Dean Homer’s, 206 Water St., Dushore.

H. Stanley Jamison, 83, of Allenwood died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He served in the Navy during World War II as an aircraft Mechanic. He was a member of the Williamsport Consistory, Watsontown F&AM Lodge 401, IREM Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Wilkes-Barre; Sunbury Shrine Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 384. Born Jan. 26, 1917, in Allenwood, he was a son of David and grace Lynn Jamison. Surviving are, his wife, Joanna Kelly Jamison; two daughters, Bonnie Mensch of Milton and Audrey Robbins of Dewart; a brother, Raymond of Allentown; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. ARNOT - Mary Sandstrom Dillard, 74, of this community died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, after a brief illness, at a daughter’s home. Her husband, Jack C. Dillard, died in 1999. Born in Arnot, she was a daughter of Anton and Mary Eadie Sandstrom. Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Rosenberg of Silver Spring, Md. and Susan Donkar of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Jack Jr. of Charlotte, N.C. and Thomas Dillard in Maryland; a brother, Ralph Sandstrom of Arnot; nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in North Carolina.
Max Lamont Taylor
Max Lamont Taylor, 85, of 420 Charles St., South Williamsport, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at home. He and his wife, the former Louise Robinson, observed their 58th wedding anniversary June 26. He was employed by Lundy Construction for 20 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He was a Presbyterian. Born April 16, 1915, in Cogan House Township, he was a son of Merton L. and Minnie Miller Taylor. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Anne Barnett of Ft. Wayne, Ind. and Susan Strode of Cary, N.C.; a brother, Joseph of DuBoistown; a sister, Evelyn Updegraff of this city; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St., with the Rev. James P. Luenberger, officiating. Graffus G. Johnston
JERSEY SHORE - Graffus G. Johnston, 77, of 423 Wylie St. died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, in Jersey Shore Hospital. His first wife, Claire B. Reidell, died Oct. 20, 1976. On June 7, 1980, he married his second wife, Louise Crowder, who survives. For 14 years he was a machinist with the former New York Central Railroad and then with Avco Lycoming, retiring in 1982. He was the former owner of Johnston’s Tire and Recapping Co., now All Round Tire. He was a World War II Navy veteran. Johnston was a member, deacon and elder at Jersey Shore Presbyterian Church. He was custodian at the church for a number of years. He was a member of Citizens Hose and Ambulance Service. He enjoyed hunting and helping farmers and especially enjoyed tractors and tractor pulls. Born May 24, 1923, in Linden, he was a son of Ralph and Martha Gamble Johnston. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Graffus G. Johnston Jr. of Nisbet; a daughter, Cheryl Brungard of Jersey Shore; two step-daughters, Dorothy Hess of Jersey Shore and Ann Marquardt of Hughesville; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the church, 235 S. Main St., with his pastor, Rev. William Chancellor, officiating. Interment will be in Jersey Shore Cemetery. LOCK HAVEN - John J. Sullivan, 82, of 326 Water St. died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at Heartland Personal Care Home, Rote. He and his wife, the former Anna Mary Messerly, observed their 55th wedding anniversary Jan. 29. He retired in 1982 as a history teacher at Lock Haven Junior High School and was a professor at the former Williamsport Area Community College. He was chief clerk for the Clinton County Commissioners for nine years. A 1937 graduate of Immaculate conception High School, he wrote an essay for IBM and won the first electric typewriter in Lock Haven for the school. He received his master’s from Bucknell University. He did graduate work at University of Pennsylvania, Penn State and Georgetown Universities. In 1966 he was named Fulbright Scholar and attended the American University of Beirut in Beirut, Lebanon. He was a member of Clinton County Historical Society, Friends of the Ross Library, Clinton County S.P.C.A., Milbrook Playhouse, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and Citizens Hose Co. He was on the board of the Clinton County Housing Authority and Recreation Board. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Anne D. Kulander of Xenia, Ohio, and Christine Hampton of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Dr. Jay of Centre Hall; a brother, Cornelius G. of Portland, Ore.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Eleanor. A Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the church, 310 W. Water St., with Msgr. Dennis R. Boggs, officiating.
