Donald X. (Duckey) Smith Jr., 63, a resident of Country Squire Court, Linden, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, in the Williamsport Hospital emergency room after he was stricken at home. He and his wife, the former Charlotte J. Myers, would have observed their eighth wedding anniversary Sunday. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the Marine Corps, rising to the rank of corporal. He enjoyed fishing. Born May 29, 1937, in Montgomery, he was a son of Donald and Grace Reese Smith Sr. Surviving, besides his wife, are 10 daughters, Doris Buss, Brenda Diehl and Gidget Beaver all of Elimsport, Shirley Morey, Lisa Eichenlaub and Tonya Richards all of Montgomery, Tina Wilkins of Milton, Cathie Beth Jeanis in Tennessee, Tonja Mertz in Washington and Sonja Davis of Lawton, Okla.; four sons, Leon Morey of Montgomery; Elmer Morey of Linden, Donald Smith III of Lewisburg and Jeffery Smith of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a brother, William of Montgomery; two sisters, Barbara Troxell of Winfield, Beatrice Richart of Muncy; 35 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leidy (Pete) Smith. The funeral will be at 12 noon Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, 41 W. Houston Ave., Montgomery, with Pastor Roosevelt Brown, church pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Twin Hills Memorial Park. Graveside services will be conducted by the Korean Veterans of Lycoming County. Friends may call at the church from 11 a.m. to 12 noonWednesday. Arrangements are being handled by Betzer’s, 40 E. Houston Ave., Montgomery.

Douglas L. Wilber Sr.
SAYRE – Douglas L. Wilber Sr., 66, of Canton RR 3 died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, in Robert Packer Hospital. He and his wife, Marlene D. Husted Wilber, observed their 45th wedding anniversary Aug. 6. He owned and operated a farm in Beech Flats, Canton Twp. from 1974 till 1993. He was employed by Remington Rand, Elmira, N.Y. He attended Canton area schools. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Troy. He was a member of Canton Moose Lodge 429, Canton American Legion Post 303 and Beech Flats Grange 336. He enjoyed fishing, horses and horse-pulling competitions. Born March 12, 1934, in Shunk, he was a son of Walker B. and Minnie Edkin Wilber. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Douglas Jr. of Canton; three daughters, Debra Barajas of Mahopac, N.Y., Cheryl Rogers of Sylvania, and Jane Wilbur of Kingston; two sisters, Alice Wolfe of Marysville and Betty Lapitan of Canton; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant brother in 1939 and two other brothers, William and Donald. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pepper’s, Springbrook Drive, Canton. Interment will follow at Beech Flats Cemetery. Friends may call the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Mary F. McCloskey
LOCK HAVEN - Mary F. McCloskey, 70, formerly of 347 Third Ave., died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at Susque-View Home. Her husband, Billie G. McCloskey, died April 1, 1995. She retired in 1990 from the West Co., Jersey Shore. She was a member of Cabane 903, 40 et 8 club and a social member of Castanea Fire Co. She was a member of Pine Run Church of Christ. Born Aug. 24, 1930, in Lock Haven, she was a daughter of John and Cordie Kling Baker. Surviving are two daughters, Karen Shields of Avis and Ethel Soo of Castanea; two sons, Kenneth L. of Orlando, Fla. and Larry A. of Jersey Shore; three sisters, Myrel Pringle of Mill Hall RR, Shirley Weigle of Jersey Shore RR and Ethel Nelson of Ridgewood, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis A. and Guy R. Baker. A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Rest Haven Memorial Park, Dunnstable Township, Clinton County. Arrangements are being handled by Wetzler’s, 320 Main St., Mill Hall.

Lois Kline Gordner
Lois Kline Gordner, 93, of Millville died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, in the Williamsport Home. Her husband, Grant I. Gordner Sr., died Dec. 23, 1956. She was a cafeteria cook in Pine Township School District, Columbia County, for nine years. She was a 1925 graduate of Millville High School and attended the former Williamsport Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member St. John’s Lutheran (Gordner’s) Church, Unityville and the Ladies Aid Society. She was a former member of the Millville Grange. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and baking. Born Sept. 13, 1907, in Greenwood Township, Columbia County, she was a daughter of Ward and Irene Reece Kline. Surviving are four sons, Paul E., Grant I. Jr., Dale T. and Robert D., all of Millville; a daughter Ruth Meckley of this city; a sister Nola Lurowist of Bloomsburg; 23 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald; a daughter, Betty; four brothers, Fred, Frank, Marion and Donald Kline; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, Unityville, with the Rev. Charles A. Baier Jr., her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Lutheran (Gordner’s) Cemetery. Friends may call at McCarty-Thomas’, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville from 7 to 9 Friday and at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Albert W. Miller Jr.
BLOSSBURG - Albert W. Miller Jr., 69, of Main Street died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, in Soldiers and Sailors Hospital, Wellsboro. He was employed by Thatcher Glass, Elmira, N.Y. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8730, Supreme Sacrifice, and William S. Wilson Post 572 American Legion, both in Blossburg. He was a member of Wellsboro Moose Lodge. He was a member of Blossburg United Methodist Church. Born Feb. 5, 1931, in New City, N.Y., he was a son of Albert and Ethel Stein Miller Sr. Surviving are his mother of Morris Run; his second wife, Mary at Home; four daughters, Lynn Stroud and Florence A. Bacon, both of Blossburg, Ann Rogge in Delaware and Marsha Hulslander of Canton; a son, Robert E.L. Hulslander of Blossburg; five sisters, Cathy Moss of Elmira Heights, N.Y., Margaret Holley and Rosemary Black, both of Morris Run, Jo Anne Brown of Shunk and Dorothy Wilson of Muskogee, Okla.; four brothers, George of Mesa, Ariz., Charles of Mansfield, Joe of Ashland, Va. and Donald Miller of Beaver Dams, N.Y.; and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia, March 12, 1990. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Zwicharowski’s, 314 Granger St., with the Rev. David Blowers, Community Chapel, Wellsboro, officiating. Burial will be private. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m.

Benny J. Cardamone
LOCK HAVEN - Benny J. Cardamone, 82, of 1198 Hillview St., Flemington, died Friday, Oct. 14, 1917, at home. His wife, the former Anna Mae McNeeley, died April 3, 1983. He worked at the former Taylor, then Piper Aircraft, for more than 40 years and was the organizer of International Association of Machinists Local 734, Lock Haven. A World War II Navy veteran, he served aboard the U.S.S. Chimoera A.R.L. 33 and was a member of William Crawford Post 131, American Legion. He was a member of Moose Lodge 100. He attended school in Bradford. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. He was known for his large Christmas display in Flemington for many years. Born Oct. 14, 1917, in Bradford, he was a son of Joseph and Angelina Gigglioti Cardamone. Surviving are two sons, Joseph B. of Severn, Md. and Jack L. of Castanea; four sisters, Mae Lauzze and Lana Picitelli, both of Wellsville, N.Y. and Molly Cooper and Josephine Pantuso, both of Bradford; two brothers, Thomas and Frank, both of Bradford; and two grandchildren. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the church, 3 E. Walnut St., with the Rev. Neil R. Dadey, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Friends may call at Moriarty-Dutcavich’s, 112 E. Church St. from 7 to 9 tonight, with a recitation of the rosary at 7:30.

John Maurice Shaffer Jr.
HUGHESVILLE - John Maurice Shaffer Jr., 78, of this borough died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at the Highlands, Laporte. His wife, the former Jane Walton Stolz, died Dec. 16, 1986. He worked for 33 years at Holibird Metal Products, Baltimore, Md. He served in Germany in the Army Infantry during World War II. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Muncy, and the church choir. He was a competitive archer. Born March 15, 1922, in Williamsport, he was a son of John M. and Grace P. Hopkins Shaffer Sr. Surviving, besides his mother, a resident of Manor Care, are a son, Jack R. of Muncy Valley; and five granddaughters. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the church, 215 S. Main St., Muncy, with the Rev. Scott Chambers, officiating. Burial will be in Muncy Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by McCarty-Thomas’, 557 E. Water St.

Margaret Whitney Moore
WELLSBORO - Margaret Whitney Moore, 85, of McInroy St. died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at home. She retired from the Wellsboro Division of Corning Glass after 38 years. She was a graduate of Charleston High School. She was a member of Wellsboro United Methodist Church. Born Jan. 11, 1915, in Delmar Township, she was a daughter of Lee and Carrie Keck Whitney. Surviving are a son, Dr. Stan of Bullhead City, Ariz.; two grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., with the Rev. Eugene A. Charsky, officiating. Burial will be in Niles Valley Cemetery, Middlebury Township. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Della M. Lepley
Della M. Lepley, 79, formerly of Percy Street, South Williamsport, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, in the Williamsport Home. Her husband, Richard W. Lepley, died in 1981. She was a homemaker. A member of First Baptist Church, she formerly was a deaconess, secretary, Sunday school teacher and choir member. Born Sept. 11, 1921, in this city, she was a daughter of John and Della Shoemaker Rathmell. Surviving are three daughters, Linda Lepley-Hackett of New Canaan, Conn., Susan Lepley-Hill of Dominica, Costa Rica, and Candace A. Arnold of Lakewood, Colo.; a brother, John W. Rathmell of Rocherster, N.Y.; and two grandsons. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday, in the church, 380 W. Fourth St., with her pastor, the Rev. Allen H. Goss, officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St., from 7 to 9 tonight.

Jesse T. McCloskey Sr.
LOCK HAVEN - Jesse T. McCloskey Sr., 89, of Lock Haven died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, in the Lock Haven Hospital extended care facility. His wife, the former Ruby Jeanetta Wadsworth, died June 19, 1994. He was a laborer at General Armature and Monument Brickyards. He was a social member of the Sons of Italy. He was a Protestant. Born Oct. 25, 1910, in Howard, he was a son of Harry and Lulu Minerva Boone McCloskey. Surviving are a daughter, Eleanor C. “Sue” Wise of Lock Haven; three sons, James H. of Lock Haven, Paul E. Sr. of Howard and Arthur J. of Dunnstown; three sisters, Annabelle Rice, Beatrice Confer and Geraldine Siegfried; two brothers, Ralph and William; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two sons, Jesse Jr. and Allen D.; two sisters, Miriam and Edith; and two brothers, Russell and Delmas. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Neff’s, 837 Main St., Howard, with the Rev. Michael Abernathy, officiating. Burial will be in Hays-Fearon Cemetery, Beech Creek Township. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m.

W. Eugene Baker
WATSONTOWN – W. Eugene “Gene” Baker, 70, formerly of Watsontown, died in Chesapeake General Hospital, Chesapeake, Va., following an extended illness. His wife, the former M. June Young, died in 1992. He was employed by Textron-Lycoming as a machinist. He had been employed by Philco Ford/Zenith Corp., Watsontown. He was affiliated with the First United Presbyterian Church, Watsontown. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, Milton. Born July 25, 1930 in Muncy, he was a son of Ollie R. and Marie K. Whalen Baker. Surviving are three daughters, Janis M. Baker of Rochester, N.Y., Linda D. Ackley of Wrightstown, N.J., and Kay R. Ziegler of Chesapeake, Va.; a son, W. Eugene of Chesapeake, Va.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary; two brothers, Leonard and Floyd; and a sister, Loretta Batdorf. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Cronrath’s, 308 Main St., with the Rev. Elizabeth B. Affsprung officiating. Burial will be in Watsontown Cemetery. Friends may call the funeral home from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Marcella V. Skelly
Marcella V. “Sally” Skelly, 77, of Millerton, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, in Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, N.Y. Her husband, Harry Skelly, died in 1976. She retired from Corning Glass Works. She was a fan of Williamson High School sports and enjoyed flea markets. Born July 27, 1923, in Roaring Branch, she was a daughter of Fred and Edna Kobbe Reed. Surviving are two daughters, Rose Elwell of Keller, Texas and Irene McNeill of Troupsburg, N.Y.; five sons, William of Nelson, Gene of Millerton, Tom of Williston, Fla., Lynn of Tioga and Terry of Azle, Texas; several brothers and sisters; 24 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Harry “Butch” Jr. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Child Catholic Church, Mansfield, with the Rev. Louis Kaminski, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Andrews Cemetery. Friends may call at Wilston’s, 18 N. Main St., Mansfield, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Dr. Martha D. Cooper
Dr. Martha D. Cooper, 46, of DeKalb, Ill., a daughter and sister of area women, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, in Bluefield, W. Va. She and her husband, Charles Otto Tucker, observed their 15th wedding anniversary July 19. She most recently was director of graduate studies in the communications department at Northern Illinois University and had served in several capacities at the university. A distinguished leader in her profession, she served on committees for various professional organizations, presenting at conferences. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, DeKalb. Surviving, besides her husband, are a housemate, Dr. Vicky Whipple; her mother, Thelma B. Cooper of Montoursville; two sisters, Donna C. Nibert of Montoursville and Doris C. Zughoul of Chicago, Ill.; and a brother, Thomas E. Cooper of Elizabethtown, Ky. She was preceded in death by her father, Rupert Cooper. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church, DeKalb, with the Rev. Kitty Ganzel officiating. Amelia Wells Welles
WYALUSING - Amelia Kathleen Wells Welles, 79, of Grovedale Lane, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, following an extended illness. She was a homemaker and a baker. She enjoyed her berry garden, wallpapering and swimming. She was a member of Wyalusing Presbyterian Church. Born March 27, 1927, in Sugar Run, she was a daughter of Gustavus Adolphus and Lena Wandell Wells. Surviving are a son, John Bradford of Wichita, Kan.; four daughters, Jacqueline Welles Keller of Bradenton, Fla., A. Kay Homer of Dushore, Linda Neiley of Homets Ferry and Mary Florence Milburn of Annapolis, Md.; a brother, Martin Wells of Ridgeway, S.C.; a sister, Margaret McDonough of Wyalusing; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, David, Maynard and Marvin; seven sisters, Ruth, Elsie, Charlotte, Helen, Blanche, Hazel and Dorothy. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Homer’s, 1 Grovedale Lane, with the Rev. Barry R. Ballard, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wyalusing Cemetery. Edward H. Brothers Sr.
Edward H. Brothers Sr., 82, of Manchester, father of a Liberty woman, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at Manor Care Health Services North. He and his wife, the former Beatrice Snyder observed their 62nd wedding anniversary, April 16. He was a farmer. He was president and treasurer of the Farmers Forum, the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association, Hawks Gunning Club and Starview Sportsman Club. He was a member of Quickels Lutheran Church, Zion’s View. Born July 31, 1918, in Manchester Township, he was a son of Charles and Nettie Anderson Brothers. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Edward H. Jr. of Mount Wolf; three daughters, Lois E. Stambaugh of Manchester, Janet L. Norman of Liberty and Karen A. Wachter of York; a brother, Charles Jr. of Manchester; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Cynthia Chambers, officiating. Burial will be in Manchester Union Cemetery, Manchester. Friends may call at Diehl’s, 87 S. Main St., Wolf, from 7 to 9 tonight and at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Stella A. Daddio
RENOVO - Stella A. Daddio, 93, of Oakridge Personal Care Home, Mill Hall, formerly of Renovo, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, in Lock Haven Hospital, Lock Haven. Her first husband, Anthony Curcio, died Dec. 25, 1959 and her second husband, Panerazio J. “Patsy” Daddio, died Dec. 25, 1985. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Sons of Italy and Western Clinton County Sportsman Association. A member of St. Joeseph’s Catholic Church, she was a member of its Altar and Rosary societies and the Catholic Daughter of America. Born May 11, 1907, in Renovo, she was a daughter of Nobile and Annie Nose Pagnotto. Surviving are a son, John Curcio of Renovo; three daughters, Rosemary Andrus of Lock Haven, Joanne Janus of Greenbelt, Md. and Ellen Smith of Warrengton, Va.; a brother, Francis Pagnotto of Watsontown; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, Anthony, George and Michael Pagnotto; four sisters, Irene McLaughlin, Mary Luchetta, Josephine Maliza and Clara Pagnotto; and a grandson. A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the church, with the Rev. Donald Boslett, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joesph’s Cemetery, Hyner. Friends may call at Maxwells’, 205 Fifth St., from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a vigil for the deceased.
