William T. Wolfe, 77, of 511 Tule St., Montoursville, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, in the Williamsport Hospital emergency room. He retired in 1977 as an estimator for Clayton C. Smith Co. He and his wife, the former Eleanor L. Boot, would have observed their 55th wedding anniversary Dec. 22. He was a member of New Covenant United Church of Christ. An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he served with the 8th Air Force in Europe. He was an avid gardner and enjoyed reading and woodworking. Born May 6, 1923, in Hartleton, he was a son of Charles O. and Alma Stover Wolfe. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, David W. of State College; a daughter, Eileen R. Bair of Washintgon, Pa.; two brothers, Rodger and Donald, both of New Berlin; two sisters, Phyllis Kreisher and Frances Daugherty, both of Lewisburg; and two grandsons, Matthew and Daniel Wolfe. He was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Shannon. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the church, 202 E. Third St., with the Rev. Bruce R. Druckenmiller, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The family will provide the flowers. Marcella V. Skelly
Marcella V. “Sally” Skelly, 77, of Millerton, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, in Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, N.Y. Her husband, Harry Skelly, died in 1976. She retired from Corning Glass Works. She was a fan of Williamson High School sports and enjoyed flea markets. Born July 27, 1923, in Roaring Branch, she was a daughter of Fred and Edna Kobbe Reed. Surviving are two daughters, Rose Elwell of Keller, Texas and Irene McNeill of Troupsburg, N.Y.; five sons, William of Nelson, Gene of Millerton, Tom of Williston, Fla., Lynn of Tioga and Terry of Azle, Texas; five brothers, Dan and James Reed, both of Linden, Carl and Leroy Reed, both of Liberty and Fred Reed of Canton; five sisters, Marjorie Lusk, Mary Brion and Lydia Roupp, all of this city, Elma Fulkerson of Liberty and Betty Reibson of Forksville; 24 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Harry “Butch” Jr. and nine brothers and sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Holy Child Catholic Church, Mansfield, with the Rev. Louis Kaminski, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Andrews Cemetery. Friends may call at Wilston’s, 18 N. Main St., Mansfield, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
William A. Powers
William A. Powers, 87, of 112 West Highland St., Avis, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at home. His wife, the former Mary A. Fisher, died Jan. 12, 1989. He retired in 1978 after 23 years at Piper Aircraft. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Born March 31, 1913, in Lamar Township, he was a son of John E. and Alice R. Knarr Powers. Surviving are a son, Russell E. of Jersey Shore; three grandchildren, William Morse, Russell Jr. and Melissa; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence W. and Kenneth E.; a son, James; and a daughter, Roxanne. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rearick-Carpenter’s, 1002 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore, with his grandson, Lt. William Morse, Salvation Army, officiating. Robert W. Metzger, 61, of 1136 Grimesville Road died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at home. He and his wife, the former Linda E. Losch, observed their 17th wedding anniversary Feb. 26. He was employed as an air traffic controller for 18 years at Rochester, Pittsburgh and John F. Kennedy airports. and worked for 10 years at Wire Rope as a strander. e was an Air Force veteran. He was a member of Red Fox Hunting Club. He was a member of Lycoming Centre Presbyterian Church and a trustee and treasurer. He was a basket maker and wood craftsman. He was a 1957 graduate of Williamsport High School. Born Aug, 20, 1939, in this city, he was a son of Samuel W. and Bertha Fritz Metzger. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Douglas A. of Long Island, N.Y. and Adam W. of Post Falls Idaho; a daughter, Laura Lee Barcia of Glendale, Calif.; two stepsons, William R. Harris of Mifflin and Frederick A. Harris of Bethlehem; a brother, Larry R. of Spring Grove; and a step-granddaughter. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in the church, Hepburnville, with his pastor, the Rev. William J. Younger, officiating. A graveside service will be at the convenience of the family. Blanche E. Peter
Blanche E. Peter, 84, of Mill Hall RR 1, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at Lock Haven Hospital Extended Care Unit. She had lived with her son for the last five months. Her husband Elery M. Peter, died Aug. 7, 1998. She was a homemaker and a member of Beech Creek Grange. She was a member of Blanchard Church of Christ. Born Jan. 31, 1916, in Lock Haven, she was a daughter of Boyd E. and Grace Mae Muthler Phillips. Surviving are four sons, Rick with whom she resided, Robert B. of Liverpool, N.Y., Danny L. of Flemington and Warren A. of Indiana; a daughter, Cherylann G. Bleeke of Shore View, Minn.; a sister, Esther M. Askey of Howard RR; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Walker’s, 231 High St., Flemington, with the Rev. Russel Moldovan, officiating. Burial will be in Blanchard Church of Christ Cemetery. Phoebe Louise Matott, 65, of 1236 Cemetery Road, Muncy, formerly of Oswego, N.Y. died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000 at Kramm Nursing Home, Watsontown. She was the widow of Hank Matott. She had worked in nursing homes in Oswego and been involved with the Salvation Army. Born Aug. 17, 1935, in Oswego, she was a daughter of Herbert and Henrietta Hammond Hill. Surviving are seven daughters, Anna Marie Thompson of Muncy, Louise Schrack of Syracuse, N.Y., Donna Bonner of Shamokin, Charlene Catalone of Oswego, Roberta Samson of Endicott, N.Y., Dorothy Luella McKinstry of Fulton, N.Y. and Roxanne Elaine McKinstry in Texas; a son Charles Mason of Madison, Ala.; a sister, Doris Barton of Oswego; 19 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at McCarty-Thomas’, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with the Rev. Henry E. Gable, chaplain of the Highlands, Laporte, officiating. JERSEY SHORE - Joseph Gibson Berry, 85, of Jersey Shore RR 1, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, in Jersey Shore Hospital. He and his wife, the former Josie Maurey observed their 56th wedding anniversary Dec. 11. Retiring in 1980 after nearly 40 years with Piper Aircraft, he was a member of the former Piper Union. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Phelps Chapel United Methodist of Pine Creek. Born April 24, 1915, in Glen Campbell, Indiana County, he was a son of Joseph and Jean McDonald Berry. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Joyce L. of Jersey Shore; a sister, Agnes Thompkins of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a step-grandson, Ashlin J. Gasiorowski. David F. Wertman, 48, of 22 Hazelwood Terrace, Pittsfield, Mass., died Wednesday. Oct. 11, 2000, at home. He was a self-employed handyman. He was a 1970 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He collected old padlocks. Born Feb. 26, 1952, in Schenectady, N.Y., he was a son of George B. and Dorothy Dildine Wertman, both former area residents. Surviving are two uncles, Jack Dildine of Columbus, Ohio and Byron Wertman of this city. He was preceded in death by a brother Richard B. Burial will be in the family plot in Turbotville. William H. Myers, 84, formerly of this city, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, in Orland. He was the widower of the former Marion F. Grissel. He was a son of Harry C. and Martha Grieshaber Myers. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth R. of Upper Gwynedd and Stephen B. of Horsham; a brother, LeRoy of Ocala, Fla.; a sister, Mary M. Heath of Miami, Fla.; and five grandchildren. Lystra E. Rogers, Former

LEWISBURG - Lystra E. Rogers, 96, a resident of 132 Hospital Drive and the former long-time administrator at Evangelical Community Hospital, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at the hospital, where she was a patient for two weeks. She served as Evangelical’s administrator for more than 30 years, retiring in 1973. She began her career as an administrator at the former hospital building on the campus of the United Methodist Home and served during the construction of the new building. She was also a member of the auxilary. She was a former board member of Union County Chapter of the American Red Cross and volunteer with the American Cancer Society. A 1921 graduate of the former Coal Township High School, she received her R.N. degree in 1925 from Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. She was a member of Beaver Memorial United Methodist Church and was a former member of trustees. Born Aug. 15, 1904, in Shamokin, she was a daughter of Leonard and Martha Johnson Rogers. Surviving is a nephew, Roger Fetterman. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Fetterman and two nieces. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Cronrath’s, South Second and St. Louis streets, with the Rev. Thomas K. Cartwright officiating. Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park. RENOVO - Conrad E. “Cash” Henry, 82, of 152 Birch St., died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, in the Bucktail Medical Center Extended Care Unit. His wife, the former Ruth T. Fox, died July 7. He worked in the former Conservation Corps Camps, coal mines, Renovo railroad shops, North Bend Tannery, Jack Perry Lumber Construction, Capitol Coach Homes, Skyline Homes and Country Inn. He was a member of Eagles Club, American Legion Post 442, and was a member and past president of the former Emerald Hose Co. and Renovo Borough Council. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Born Feb. 18, 1819, in Kelley Station, Armstrong County, he was a son of Daniel C. and Jesse McKain Henry. Surviving are three sons, Robert and Donald, both of Renovo and Daniel of Buchanan, Va.; two sisters, Flora Priester of Rimersburg and Hulda Ramsey of Youngstown, Ohio; three brothers, Richard of Tombell, Robert of Bliss, N.Y. and Floyd of Erie; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Wilbert, Delbert and Donald; and two sisters, Jesse Rankin and Edith Henry. Services will be announced. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Robert L. Nicholson
Robert L. Nicholson, 79, of Old Lycoming Township, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at Williamsport Hospital. He was a forester with the state Bureau of Forestry, retiring in 1978. He previously was a forester for the Bureau of Land Management in Oregon. He was a Marine veteran of World War II and Korea. A 1939 graduate of Williamsport Area High School, he was a 1942 graduate of Penn State University, with a bachelor’s degree in forestry. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. Born Aug. 8, 1921, in Wilkinsburg, he was son of James J. and Edith M. Pepper Nicholson. Surviving are a sister, Elizabeth N. Noble of Philadelphia; and a cousin, Anna C. Nicholson of this city. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Wildwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Daren K. Williams officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St.

LEWISBURG - Helen M. Folk, 76, of Old Turnpike Road, Lewisburg, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at home. Her first husband, Charles Edward Morris, died in 1970 and her second husband, Alton Eugene Folk, died in 1990. She worked at JMP Co. and retired as line supervisor. She was a member of the Ramblers Club and volunteered at RiverWoods. She enjoyed bowling and was a member of a league in Mifflinburg. She was a graduate of Lewisburg Area High School. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Born May 30, 1924, in Lewisburg, she was a daughter of John S. and Mary C. Winklebleek Zeigler. Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Ann Street of Cogan Station; two sons, Gene E. Morris of Selinsgrove and Robert C. Morris of Lewisburg; two stepsons, Norman and William Folk, both of Northumberland; three sisters, Anna Wehr of Mifflinburg, Edith Feaster and Joyce Keefer, both of Lewisburg; and seven grandchildren. Robert S. Winters, 73, of Hickory Lane, Armstrong Township, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He and his wife, the former Ellen K. Laylon, observed their 42nd wedding anniversary Feb. 22. He retired in 1989 as a truck driver for Chemical Lehman Tank Lines after 32 years. He was a former Armstrong Township supervisor. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a truck driver in the Fifth Infantry Division. He was a member of Williamsport American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7863, DuBoistown. He was a life member of Susquehanna Four Wheelers club. Born Jan. 26, 1927, in Old Lycoming Township, he was a son of Robert A. and Marion Shafer Winters. Surviving, besides his wife, are three sons, Clifford R. of Lancaster, Richard C. and C. James, both of this city; a daughter, Donna K. Calta of Bowling Green, Ky.; two brothers, James of Rose Valley and Leon of Elimsport; a sister, Dorothy Mosser of Elimsport; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Howard, Herb, Carl, Fred and a twin brother, Richard; and a sister, Louise Hanley. GALETON - Eugene O. Van Steamburg, 81, died Thursday, October 12, 2000, in Broad Acres Nursing Home, Wellsboro. He was married to the former Verda Osgood. He was employed by Galeton Production as a machine maintenance person for many years. Born April 3, 1919, he was a son of Clarence and Eva Lewis Van Steamburg. Surviving, besides his wife are, a son, William E. of Bristol, Vt.; three grandchildren, Sheila Gebo and Eugene of Bristol, Vt.; and Ingrid Pease of Tunbridge, Vt.; and a sister, Wilda Smith of Newark, N.Y. He was preceded in death by a brother, Vincent and two sisters, Margaret Foreman and Ruth Lattimer. The funeral will be at noon Wednesday at Collins-Olney’s, 14 West St., with the Rev.
