Clifford Lewis Roupp
LIBERTY – Clifford Lewis Roupp, 86, of Liberty RR 1 died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, in the Green Home, Wellsboro. He and his wife, Ruth Leda Mitstifer, were married on Dec. 5, 1933. He retired from Fisher Mining in English Center. He was employed as a miner, a woodsman, welder for the Navy shipyard in Philadelphia, at the tannery in Williamsport and was a farmer. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He enjoyed fishing, picking berries and playing string musical instruments. Born May 14, 1914, in Towanda, he was the son of Ross and Lela Roupp. Surviving are five daughters, Jennie and Winona of Liberty, June of Morris, Leda of Trout Run and Lela of Wellsboro; three sons, James of Warren, Vt., William of Seaford, Del., and Joseph of Forksville; 31 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren; and six step great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Methodist Church, Nauvoo, with the Revs. Joy Hulslander and Dr. Fred D. Wood III officiating. Burial will follow in Salem St. Paul Cemetery, Liberty Township. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Freeburg’s, 120 N. Williamson Road, Blossburg, and 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.

Alvin A. Houseknecht
Alvin A. Houseknecht, 65, of 905 Wolf Run Road, Trout Run, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. His wife, the former Ruth M. Case, died June 28. He was a retired equipment operator for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Born June 4, 1935, in this city, he was a son of Harold and Clara Hackling Houseknecht Sr. Surviving are two sons, Arnold J. of Lock Haven and Brian M. of Trout Run; three daughters, Debra A., Kelli S. and Vanetta J., all of Trout Run; four brothers, Harold of Rose Valley, Robert of Hepburnville, Charles of Columbia Cross Roads and David in Florida; two sisters, Janet Bittner of Trout Run and Susan Toothacher of Blossburg; 8 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville. Burial will be in Twin Hills Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday. The family will provide the flowers.

Alice A. Harman, 85, of 1940 Mahaffey Lane, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at Manor Care Health Services South. Arrangements are being handled by Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St.

Clifford E. Kennedy
JERSEY SHORE - Clifford E. Kennedy, 78, of State Street, Antes Fort, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at Jersey Shore Hospital. He and his wife, the former Marjorie Truslove, observed their 55th wedding anniversary March 26. He retired from Textron Lycoming after more than 30 years. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Jersey Shore Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. Born Sept. 27, 1922, in Swissdale, he was a son of Louis and Tessie Frye Kennedy. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Gary L. of Cogan Station and Terry L. of Jersey Shore; a daughter, Shelly M. Jordan of Jersey Shore; five sisters, Goldy Alvis of California City, Calif., Hazel Bower, Evelyn Gee and Dorothy Getgen, all of Antes Fort and Helen Camp of Cheektowaga, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Welker’s, 125 N. Main St., with the Rev. Michael A. Guiswite, officiating. Burial will be in Jersey Shore Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Ernest L. Dowell
WELLSBORO - Ernest L. Dowell, 76, of RD 7 Wellsboro, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital, here. He and his wife, the former, Marguerite E. Wilcox, observed their 30th wedding anniversary Dec. 6. He was a field office manager for Tennessee Gas for many years, and was retired as a desk clerk from the Penn Wells Hotel/Lodge where he worked for 14 years. He attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Wellsboro. He was an Army veteran serving during World War II. Born Sept. 8, 1924 in Campbellsville, Ky., he was a son of Hallie E. and Emma Speer Dowell. Surviving besides his wife are, his mother, of Campbellsville, Ky.; a son, Christopher of Monroe, La.; a daughter, Ann Goleman of Monroe, La.; three step-sons, Jim and John Greenfield of Wellsboro, and Stephen Greenfield of Montoursville; a sister, Emily Antle of Campbellsville, Ky.; two brothers, Tommy and James of Campbellsville, Ky.; and several grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Gregory Hinton officiating. Interment will be at the Columbarium of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Tussy-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., Wellsboro.

John A. Levander
RENOVO - John A. Levander, 94, of 301 Clinton Ave., South Renovo, died Friday, October 13, 2000, at his home. His wife, the former Hazel M. Swartwood, died Jan. 7, 1993. He was a mechanic and machinist for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was a member of Zion’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a member of the BPO Elks Lodge #334, Renovo; The F&AM #495, Renovo; The Western Clinton County Sportsman Association and a social member of the American Legion Post #442. A hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed small engine repair. Born July 7, 1906, in Curwensville, he was a son of Alfred and Anna Olson Levander. Surviving are two nieces, Esther Guizar of South Renovo and Jean Woomer of Marsh Creek; a nephew, Elmer Wertz Jr. of South Renovo and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Selma Wertz, Ellen Anderson, Edith Plonse and Eva Didier; and a brother, Raymond. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Maxwell’s, 205 Fifth St., with the Rev. Steven Brauner officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park, Lock Haven. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Lura C. Hartman
Lura C. Hartman, 90, of 25 Calebs Road, Cogan Station, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at the home of her daughter. Her husband, Harry Hartman, died Feb. 11, 1981. She retired from the former H. Warsaw and Son and previously worked for Flook’s Market. She was a member of Kingdom Hall Jehovah Witness. Born July 12, 1910, in Gamble Township, she was a daughter of William and Mary Plank Chaapel. Surviving are two daughters, Wanda Y. Kurtz of St. Charles, Mo., and Joyce E. Smith of Cogan Station; two sisters, Jean Freeman of Placentia, Calif. and Dorothy Dangle of Montoursville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville.

Mary Jane Wilson
RENOVO - Mary Jane Wilson, 60, of 139 Tenth St., Renovo, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at home. She and her husband, Burton Wilson, observed their 40th wedding anniversary May 14. She was a machine operator and quality control for Trucklite, McElhattan. She was a member of the Renovo Fire Department ladies auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking and baking. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Renovo. Born Feb. 8, 1940, in Renovo, she was a daughter of Orlando and Julia Drugatz Tassa. Surviving, besides her husband, are three sons, Burton Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, Thomas of Mill Hall and Robert of Erie; two daughters, Brenda Lee Bower of Fort Meade, Md. and Jean Marie Mason of Renovo; two sisters, Pauline Lomax of State College and Gloria Jean Hesler of Morristown; and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Monday at Maxwells’, 205 Fifth St., Renovo, with the Rev. Donald Boslett, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m.

John P. Williams
MUNCY – John P. Williams, 83, of 302 S. Washington St., died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at the Muncy Valley Hospital after being stricken Tuesday. His first wife, the former Betty Harman, died Aug. 26, 1948. His wife of 41 years, the former Averil A. Baysore, died July 29, 1991. He retired from the former Sprout-Waldron, now Andritz. He was a graduate of Muncy High School. He was a member of St. Andrew Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club of Sprout-Waldron, Muncy Lodge 299 F.&A.M. and the Williamsport Consistory and was a volunteer at the Muncy Valley Hospital, and a member of its auxiliary. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, bowling and playing cards. Born Oct. 10, 1917, in Montoursville, he was the son of E. Morrill and Edna J. Edkin Williams. Surviving are a son, John P. of Gloversville, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Adam and Jessica, both of Gloversville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Wallis-Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., with the Rev. Dr. Donald P. Edwards, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Muncy Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. A Masonic service will be conducted at the funeral home at 9 p.m. The family will provide the flowers.

Clara G. Berry
Clara G. Berry, 89, of this city, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000. She was retired from C. A. Reed after 45 years of service. She was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. Born Aug. 16, 1911, in this city, she was a daughter of Edward and Mary Swartz Berry. Surviving are two sisters, Louise L. Baumer and Alice M. Samar, both of here; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Frederick, Carl and Charles; and two sisters, Mary Seriff and Geraldine Weigartz, both of here. The funeral will be at noon Wednesday, at Crouse’s, 133 E. Third St., with the Rev. Lynn Sinnott, officiating. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery.

Richard M. Keaner
Richard M. Keaner, 65, of 36165 South Canyon Brook Drive, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of South Williamsport, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at the home of his son in Gaithersburg, Md. He and his wife, the former Jacqueline M. Counsil, observed their 43 wedding anniversary on Sept. 13. He retired in 1999, after working for IBM in Gaithersburg for 24 years. A 1952 graduate of South Williamsport High School, Keaner received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Pennsylvania State University, and a Master of Mathematics degree from the University of Alabama. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was born Dec. 26, 1934, in this city, the son of Mrs. William Keaner of South Williamsport. Surviving are two daughters, Cathie K. Hoffman of Charlotte, N.C. and Sheri L. Genies of Germantown, Md.; a son, Bruce R. of Gaithersburg; three sisters, Jean Harman of Montgomery, Peggy Bausinger of South Williamsport and Judy Keefer of Mesa, Ariz.; one brother, William Hinkle of Boise, Idaho and four grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St., with the Rev. John Otto, pastor of Faith Alliance Church officiating. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday. The family will provide the flowers.

Paige Keeney
MANSFIELD - Paige Keeney, 66, of RD1, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at home. He was the husband of Elizabeth Stover. He was a dairy farmer and retired in 1994. He worked for Benedict’s Bus Service of Wellsboro. Born June 10, 1934, in Middlebury Center, he was a son of Seymour B. and Alice Cummings Keeney. Surviving, besides his wife are, a son, Phillip, of the borough; two brothers, Jordan and Bud of Middlebury Center; and two sisters, Ruth Elliot, Harrisburg; and Marlea Owens. He was preceded in death by a brother, Erwin. There will be visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Carleton’s, RR7 Wellsboro, with Pastor Thomas McElrath officiating. The family will provide the flowers.

Helen K. Kline
BENTON - Helen K. Kline, 89, of Main Street, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at the Bonham Nursing Center in Register. She was priorly a resident of Outlook Pointe Commons in Bloomsburg. Her husband of 70 years, Rev. Edgar R. Baker, died in 1999. She worked with her husband at his store in Talmar from 1929 to 1944. She was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Talmar. She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star. She attended Greenwood Schools and was a 1928 graduate of Millville High School. Born Dec. 31, 1910, in Rohrsburg, Columbia County, she was a daughter of Warren and Grace Parker Kline. Surviving are two sons, Glen R., Severna Park, Md.; Wayne K., Alexandria, Va.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Kline Johnson, and a brother, John Albert Kline. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, at McMichael’s, 4394 Red Rock Road, Route 487, Benton, with the Rev. Brad Spangenberg, officiating. Burial will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Talmar. Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Kathryn T. Kline
LEWISBURG – Kathryn T. Kline, 91, formerly of River Road, New Columbia, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2000, at RiverWoods here. She retired in 1974 from the Himmelreich Library in this borough as head librarian. She was a librarian at James V. Brown Library, city, for more than 20 years. She volunteered more than 10 years as librarian at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village. She graduated from the Williamsport High School in 1927 and the former Dickinson Seminary in 1928. She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, city. Born July 2, 1909, in Trenton, N.J., she was a daughter of Marsh P. and Mary H. Lutton Turner. Surviving is her sister, Eleanor R. Turner of Towson, Md. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wildwood Cemetery with the Rev. Arlie E. Davis, pastor of Christ Wesleyan Church, Milton, officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Cronrath’s, S. Second and St. Louis streets.

F. Donald McKernan, 72, of 320 Grampian Blvd., died Thursday Oct. 12, 2000, in the Williamsport Hospital. He was a Realtor and appraiser for many years. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School and Lycoming College. He was a member of the West Branch Valley Association of Realtors, the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, the Williamsport Country Club and a former member of the Ross Club. He was a Marine Corps veteran. Born Jan. 19, 1928, in Upper Darby, he was a son of Donald J. and Anna E. Lynch McKernan. Surviving are his wife, the former Jean M. Wetzel; six sons, Michael J. of Jersey Shore, Stephen W. of Albuquerque, N.M., Donald L. of Portland, Ore., Frederick B. of Louisville, Ky., Edward H. of Los Altos, Calif., and Mark J. of Evanston, Ill.; two daughters, Sharon A. Gottlieb of Fairfax Station, Va. and Susan M. Ruswick of Ithaca, N.Y.; two brothers, Robert J. of Williamsport and Richard T. of Farmington, Conn.; two sisters, Regina M. Crouse of Williamsport and Ann C. Paris of Tallahassee, Fla.; and 21 grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at the church, 326 Washington Blvd., with the Rev. Stephen McGough officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Crouse’s, 133 E. Third St.

Mahlon E. Northrop
WELLSBORO - Mahlon E. Northrop, 82, of 42 West Ave., died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at home. He was the husband of Marian G. Soderquist, his wife of 59 years. He was a Navy veteran serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres of World War II. He was a 1941 graduate of Mansfield State College. He received his masters degree from Penn State University in 1950. He was a supervising principal for the Wellsboro Area School District and the first administrator for the Tioga County Christian Academy. He was a member of the Marsh Creek Fellowship Baptist Church, Route 6 Wellsboro. He was a member of the Wellsboro Rotary and the American Legion. Born Jan. 4, 1918, in Ansonia, he was a son of Benjamin and Cora Crawford Northrop. Surviving, besides his wife are, two daughters, Sharon Cuda, Elkland; Jeanne Ingerick, Fla.; a son, Mark, here; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the church between 7 and 9 p.m. Tuesday. A private service will be held Wednesday at the convenience of the family with the Revs. Jeff Porter and Paul Connor, officiating. Burial will be in Wellsboro Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St.
