BENTON - Henry Edward Evans, 77, of 33 Robin Road, Millville, formerly of Chippewa, Muncy Creek Township, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at his home after an extended illness. He retired from Milco Industries in 1987. He also worked for Little Lumber of Benton, Apex and UGI. An Army veteran of World War II, he was held in a German P.O.W. camp from Aug. 1944 to April 1945. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He was a life member of the Benton V.F.W. He attended the Greenwood and Millville schools. Born, Feb. 17, 1923, in Chippewa, Muncy Creek Township, he was a son of Raymond G. and Amanda Hunsinger Evans. Surviving are his wife, the former Alice M. Whitmoyer Blue; 11 children, Grace Martinez of Divide, James Kile of Quarryville, Jean Bogert of Stillwater, Janet Martz, Carol Evans, Cindy Henderson, all of Benton, Carl Evans of Hughesville, Sandra Schamberger, Berwick, and Penny Evans of Bloomsburg; two sisters, Fannie I. and Doris M. Evans, both of Benton; 31 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; seven stepchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; and numerous step-great-grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by his first wife, Pearl A. McHenry Evans in 1987; a daughter, Barbara Weaver; and three brothers, Donald and Robert, who were killed in World War II, and Max I. in 1949. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at McMichael’s 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton, with the Rev. David H. Diehl, chaplain for the Columbia-Montour Hospice officiating. Burial will be in the Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge, with military honors being rendered by the Benton V.F.W. and Co. C 103rd Armor Berwick. Francis B. “Frank” Hodoba, 77, of Steelton, formerly of Williamsport, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, in Community General Osteopathic Hospital, Lower Paxton Twp. He was a retired aircraft engine tester for Avco, a division of Textron. He was a member of the Church of the Ascension. He was a World War II Army veteran. Surviving, besides his wife, the former Doris P. Brown, are a daughter, Kimberly Waltman, Steelton; three granddaughters; and a grandson. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetary, Annville. Arrangements are being handled by Coble-Reber Funeral Home, Middletown.

TROUT RUN-June A. Miller, 68, died Friday, October 20, 2000. She was a homemaker and a member of Steam Valley Bible Church. She and her husband, Rexford Miller, observed their 45th wedding anniversary April 2. Born May 4, 1932 in Covington, she was a daughter of Wesley and Leona Emberger Smith. Surviving, beside: her husband, are three sons, Jan Wesley of Trout Run, Scott Alan of Blossburg and Peter Anthony of San Luis, Calif.; seven sisters, Faye Tokarz, Marcille Cleveland, Marcia Geer, and Patricia Chaborek of Covington, Betty Jean and Sandra K. Smith of Wellsboro, Lucille Persun of Trout Run; a grandson, Casey Miller; and a granddaughter Laura Miller. She was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Joan. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the church with the Rev. Richard Kruegar, officiating. Burial will follow at Gray Cemetery, Covington. Friends may call at Freeburg’s 120 N. Williamson Road, Blossburg on Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the time of the services.

NORTHUMBERLAND - Paul H. Ritter, 91, formerly of Picture Rocks, died Friday, Oct. 21, 2000, in Nottingham Village Nursing Home. He is survived by his second wife, the former Ruth A. Bird Brooks. He retired in 1985 as the director of public relations for Knosue Food Co., Gettysburg. He was formerly employed by the former Armour Leather Co. in Newberry. He was a member of First Northumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Lodge 397 F&AM, Williamsport and the Williamsport Consistory. He was a member of the Eagles Mere Rod and Gun Club. He was a graduate of Picture Rocks High School and received a bachelor’s degree in commerce and finance from Penn State University. Born, Oct. 22, 1909, in Eagles Mere, he was a son of Hiram D. and Jennie Rightmyer Ritter. Surviving besides his wife, are a stepson, Davis H. Brooks, of Indianapolis; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Helen I Michael, in 1993 and a son, Paul M. Ritter, in 1995. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church, 114 Queen St. Northumberland, with his pastor, the Rev. Richard L. Kellet, and his nephew, the Rev. James R. Ritter Jr. of the Watsontown Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Eagles Mere Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will follow the service in the fellowship hall of the church. Arrangements were handled by Cronrath’s South Second and St. Louis Streets, Lewisburg.
Mary MacBlane Barden
MANSFIELD - Mary MacBlane Barden, 94, of this borough died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000. She retired as a teacher from the Wellsboro-Charleston schools in 1964. She was a member of the Eastern Star of Mansfield. She was a member of First United Methodist Church here. She attended Morris Run and Mansfield schools and a was a graduate of Mansfield Normal School. Born, July 16, 1906, in Morris Run, she was a daughter of Samuel and Mary Moses MacBlane. Surviving are two daughters, Ann Miller of Corning, N.Y., and Margaret Leach of Selinsgrove; a son, Edward Barden of Lancaster; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predecesed by her husband, Arthur; a brother, Edward MacBlane; and a sister, Margaret Giesas. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wilston’s, 18 N. Main St., with the Rev. Joyce M. Treas, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Mansfield. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

LAPORTE - L. Ethel Burkholder, 84, formerly of Ulster RR 2, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, in Highlands Care Center, Laporte. Her husband, Alvin J. Burkholder, died in 1994. She was employed at Eclipse, Elmira during World War II. She later was employed by Schweitzer Aircraft and Gould’s Greenhouse, Buckley-Nylock Co. and Milton Shoe Factory. Born, Sept. 13, 1916, in Erin, N.Y., she was a daughter of Edward and Lillie Thompson Price. Surviving are, a son, Alvin Burkholder of South Dayton, N.Y.; three daughters, Judy Hampton of South Montrose, Lena Garris of Athens and Norma Heath of Southport, N.Y.; two sisters, Loretta Butler of Horseheads, N.Y., and Helena Nichols of Elmira, N.Y. The funeral will be at noon Tuesday at Bowen-Farr’s, Gordon Farr St., Ulster, with the Rev. Lowell Patton officiating. Burial will be in Ulster Cemetery. WELLSBORO - William E. “Bill” Hemmingway, 76, of Catlin Hollow Road died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000 in Soldiers and Sailors Hospital here. His wife, the former Grace “Betty’ Hastings died in 1994. He was a machinist at Dresser’s Pipefitting. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 84 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 497, both Wellsboro, the Disabled Veterans of America 29, and the Loyal Order of Moose 1147. He was a Protestant. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, archery and gardening. Born, July 24, 1924, in Hammond, he was son of Fred M. and Jeanette Plumley Hemmingway. Surviving are three daughters, Ellen Kendziewski of Gloucester, Va., Gayle Buck and Carol Button, both of Tioga; two stepbrothers, William Gee of Lawrenceville and Beldon Gee of Troy; four stepsisters, Leora Lloyd of Blossburg, Virginia Saracene of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Clarabelle Ferraro of Elmira, N.Y.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a stepsister, Teresa Gee, in 1996. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., with the Rev. Harry J. Colegrove officiating. Burial will be in Tioga County Memorial Gardens. MONTGOMERY – H. William “Bill” Johnson, 78, of 1764 Pinchtown Road died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, in Muncy Valley Hospital, Muncy, after being stricken at home. He and his wife, the former Miriam Bower, observed their 53rd wedding anniversary Jan. 1. He retired from Trimtex, Williamsport, and was employed at the former Montgomery Mills in this borough for 33 years. He was proprietor of Bill’s Sharpening Service. A 1941 graduate of Montgomery-Clinton High School, he was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the China-Burma theatre. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of St. John Lutheran “Brick” Church. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 743, borough, and Council 350 of the United Commercial Travelers. He enjoyed fishing. Born Nov. 2, 1921, in Clinton Township, he was a son of Abel and Frances Bower Johnson. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Eileen L. Shrey of New Freedom; three sons, Charles T. of Savannah, Ga., David S. of Philadelphia and Lynn R. of Fallon, Nev.; two brothers, G. Wilbur and Fred, both of Watsontown; a sister, Dottie M. Bielaszka of Mechanicsburg, and three grandsons. He was preceded in death by a brother, John C. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church, 196 Brick Church Road, with the Rev. Scott W. Baker, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery. Friends may call in the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday. Graveside military service will be conducted. Lester S. L. Paulhamus
Lester S. L. Paulhamus, 86, of 1201 Rural Ave., formerly of Cogan Station RR 2, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, in Rose View Center, following a brief illness. He and his wife, the former Grace Hornberger, observed their 57th wedding anniversary on Aug. 28. Paulhamus retired in 1991 as a dairy farmer. He was the gravedigger at the State Road Cemetery for more than 50 years. A former member of the State Road United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school, he was also a member of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Born Sept. 21, 1914, in Lycoming Township, he was the son of Sylvester W. and Bessie R. Kinley Paulhamus. Surviving, besides his wife, are three sons, L. LaRue, D. Jay and Jan F., all of Cogan Station; one daughter, Joy Louise Aderhold of this city; two sisters, Grace A. Lovell of this city and Dorothy I. Fisher of Jersey Shore, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifton, Dayton and Torrence, and one sister, Helen Waltz. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave., with the Rev. Elwood L. Hollopeter, a retired United Methodist minister, officiating. Interment will be in State Road Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Evelyn M. Hutchins, 85, of 2211 W. Mountain Ave., South Williamsport, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Rose View Center. Her husband, Clyde F. Hutchins, died Nov. 7, 1952. She was a secretary and bookkeeper at YMCA for 16 years and also a secretary in the Domestic Relations and Collection offices of the Lycoming County Court House for 12 years. She was a member of American Business Women’s Association Penn Laurel Chapter. She was a member of Pine Street United Methodist Church. Born April 3, 1915, in State College, she was a daughter of Mae Irene Farrar. Surviving are a son, Robert C. of South Williamsport; three daughters, JoAnne M. Erwine and Sandra L. Wolfe, both of Bloomsburg, and Jackolyn R. Dittenhafer of Carlisle, a stepdaughter Dorothy Husband of Des Moines, Wash.; a stepson Donald C. of Huntsville, Texas; a brother, James M. Farrar in Michigan; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Noll’s, 1 E. MANSFIELD - Jane K. Dry, 88, of 250 N. Main St., died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, inArnot-Ogden Hospital, Elmira, N.Y. She and her husband, Melvin A. Dry, observed their 66th wedding anniversary Aug. 5. She was a receptionist and bookkeeper for two dentists in Bellefonte, Drs. E.A. Evans and W.F. Coole retiring in 1975. She was a member and past president of Utopian Club, Mansfield, Mansfield University Faculty Wives Club and Alpha Delta Sunday School Class. She was also a member of Lodge 321 Order of the Eastern Star and Punxsutawney Chapter of the Order of the Rainbow Girls. She was a 1929 graduate of Bellefonte High School. She was a member of Mansfield First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Born Jan. 2, 1912, in Bellefonte, she was a daughter of Harry B. and Jane Morrison Kern. Surviving are two daughters, Sondra D. Yarrison of Oley and Kay D. Schwab of Loganton; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Cemetery, Bellefonte, with the Rev. Thomas Searfoss officiating. NEW COLUMBIA - Heather J. Corey, 16, of Treibley Road died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, in an automobile accident. She was employed at Country Cupboard as a waitress and occasionally worked at RiverWoods as a resident support assistant. She was a senior at Milton High School, where she was editor of the high school yearbook, member and former vice president of Future Business Leaders of America, a member of the National Honor and Spanish Honor Society, Students Against Destructive Decisions and Pennsylvania Youth Education Association. She tutored girls in Spanish and math at Milton Junior High School. She was a member of Mt. Deliverance Worship Center and taught Sunday school. Born Nov. 8, 1983, in Lewisburg, she was a daughter of Melvin I. and Hope J. Eisenhower Corey. Surviving, besides her parents, are a brother, Travis Lee at home; a sister, Trisha N. at home; paternal grandparents, the Rev. Melvin R. and Alma P. Corey, of Williamsport; and maternal grandmother, Jean K. Eisenhower of New Columbia RR 2. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church, New Columbia RR 2, with the Revs. Carl E. JERSEY SHORE - Ethel E. “Curly” Shemory, 88, of Jersey Shore RR 1 died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at ManorCare Health Center here. She and her husband, Nelson Shemory, observed their 49th wedding anniversary Feb. 2. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Garman Lutheran Church. Born Jan. 31, 1912, in Pine Creek Township, Clinton County, she was a daughter of Henry and Jessie Miller Keller. Surviving are a daughter, Vivian Davidson of Jersey Shore; two brothers, H. Phillip and Charles Keller, both of Jersey Shore; two sisters, Mary Ott of Jersey Shore and Helen Giles of Crestmont; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Donald; two brothers, Robert and Boyd Keller; a sister, Reba Campbell; and a grandson. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the church, with the Rev.
