Robert R. Winner
Robert R. Winner, 90, formerly of the 1400 block of Country Club Lane, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at Valley View Nursing Center, where he lived for three years. His wife, the former Thelma M. Gross, died May 21, 1994. He managed the former Bus Station restaurant, owned a sub shop on Penn Street, a pastry shop on West Fourth Street and a restaurant on Arch Street. A musician, he played in the Williamsport High School band, the Little German Band and was the oldest member of the Elks Repasz Band. He was a member of the Williamsport Federation of Musicians Union Local 761 and was a featured trombone artist on WRAK. He was a graduate of Williamsport High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Born Jan. 28, 1910, in this city, he was a son of Jacob and Clara Glace Winner. Surviving are a son, Howard L. of Mingoville; a daughter, Joan D. of this city; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sanders’, 821 Diamond St., with the Rev. Darren K. Williams, Christ Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Cathy L. Adams
DORNSIFE - Cathy L. Adams, 39, of Dornsife RR1, formerly of Northumberland RR 2, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident on Route 147, Upper Augusta Twp. She was employed by Wood-Mode, Inc., Kreamer for the past one and one half years. She was a 1979 graduate of Shikellamy High School. She was a Lutheran. She was a member of the Ladies Auxillary #759, Sunbury, the Loyal Order of Moose and the Susquehanna Valley Billiard League. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxillary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8298, Northumberland. Born July 19, 1961, in Sunbury, she was a daughter of Harry E. and Josephine Martin Adams. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her fiancee, William W. Thew of Dorsife; three sisters, Thea Sheaffer of Northumberland, Mary A. Finck of Montgomery and Ruthann E. Book of Selinsgrove; and two brothers, Harry E. of Northumberland and Joseph L. of Sunbury. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Epler’s, Second and King Streets, Northumberland, with the Rev. Arnold R. Bensen, officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. A reception will follow the service at the Sunbury Moose Lodge #181, 256 Market St., Sunbury.

Walter L. Bastain
Walter L. Bastain, 83, formerly of the 100 block of Union Ave., died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at Sycamore Manor. He was the widower of the former Helen L. Ohnmeiss. He retired in 1979 from Avco-Lycoming after 38 years. He was a member of Chapter Union Local 787 United Auto Workers. He was a member of the Keystone League and a social member of Garrett Cochran Post 1 American Legion. He was a member of Williamsport Loyal Order of Moose 145 for 57 years. Born April 9, 1917, in this city, he was a son of Walter L. and Esther Bair Bastain. Surviving are a son, Thomas R. of Houston, Texas; a sister, Evelyn Yaw of Rocherster, N.Y.; 4 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sanders’, 821 Diamond St., with the Rev. Ronald D. Savits, Newberry Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m.

Linda B. Bennett
Linda B. Bennett, 60, of 871 Lincoln Rd., Exeter Twp., died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000 at St. Joseph Medical Center. She was a teacher’s aide at the Lorane Elementary School for the Exeter School District for twenty years, retiring in 1994. Born in Williamsport, she was a daughter of Edward D. and Lura L. Kimble Silsbee. Surviving besides her parents of this city, are her husband, Kenneth E.; three sons, Donald E. Messner, Jr. of Richland, Kenneth R. Bennett of Pottstown and Dustin E. Bennett of Birdsboro; a daughter, Patricia A. DeGuzman of Harrisburg; two brothers, Lionel of Quakertown and Lee of Williamsport; three sisters, Laura Lucier of Lancaster, Loanne Hughes of Ridgeway, Va. and Leta Grimes of Williamsport; and seven grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lutz’s, 2100 Perkiomen Ave., Reading. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m.

Lance K. Bowes
Lance K. Bowes, 59, of Beech Creek RR 1, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at Williamsport Hospital. He and his wife, the former Pamela McGhee, observed their 38th wedding anniversary Nov. 8. He worked in the maintenance department of Thermacore for the last 13 years, and previously at Hammermill Paper Co. for 27 years. He was a social member of the Castanea Fire Hall. He was a 1959 graduate of Lock Haven High School. He was Born Aug. 28, 1941, in Lock Haven. Surviving are three sons, Ralph E. McCloskey of Flemington, Jeffery K. of San Antonio, Texas and Mark A. of Wiesbaden, Germany; and eight grandchildren. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Walker’s, 231 High St., Flemington.

Evelyn Viola Fleming
Evelyn Viola Fleming, 89, of Forks Twp., Sullivan County, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. Her husband, Ernest Carl Fleming, died in 1993. She moved to Sullivan County after her husband’s death. She attended Millview Wesleyan Church. Born in Indiana, she was a daughter of Rollie A. and Mary Frances Lewis Scheidler. Surviving are a son, Roy of Holland, Mich.; a daughter, Edna Manugh of Dayton, Ohio; two brothers, Muriel Couden and Donald Richard both of Galion, Ohio; a sister, Mage Lodmia Davis of Galion; 10 grandchildren, including a granddaughter, Tracy Molyneux, whom she reared; and seven great grandchildren, including two great-granddaughters, Brandi and Brittany Hurst, with whom she lived. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Jane Jose and Henaleta Strought; two brothers, Elgar Eugene and Lyman Leroy; and two sisters, Cleobell Scheidler and Esther May Snyder. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Millview Wesleyan Church, Millview, with the Rev. Matthew D. Pickering officiating. Burial will be in the Pilgrim Home Cemetery, Holland. Arrangements are being handled by Homer’s, 206 Water St., Dushore.

Irene M. Woodard Frost
Irene M. Woodard Frost, 83, of Covington, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at home. She was a farmer and homemaker and was known for her quilts. Born, Dec. 18, 1916, Tioga County, she was a daughter of Frank and Pearl Harvey Woodard. Surviving are three sons, Richard M. of Jacksonville, Fla., Harold and Clifford both of Mansfield; three daughters, Loretta M. Roupp of Ocean City, Md., Arlene M. Williams of Gillet and Josephine M. Miles of Mainsburg; a sister, Joyce Baker of Elmira, N.Y.; 24 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Eleanor Hutchinson. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Scureman’s, 130 S. Main St., Mansfield. Burial will be in Gray Cemetery, Covington Twp. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight.

David H. Griffiths
David H. Griffiths, 68, of 2320 Warrensville Road, Montoursville, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at Williamsport Hospital. His first wife, Janet, died in 1981, he and his second wife, the former Julietta Harvey Bomberger, would have observed their 18th wedding anniversary Nov. 27. He retired in 1996 as director of transportation for Step; was previously executive director of Boy Scouts of America in Lancaster, Harrisburg and Washington, D.C.; director of continuing education of Penn State University, Delaware Campus; and director of Lancaster Integrated Specialized Transportation System. He was past president of Millersville Lions Club, the former Millersville Rotary Club and Loyalsock Twp. Lions Club. He was an Army veteran. He was a 1950 graduate of McCaskey High School, Lancaster and a 1954 of Millersville University. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. Born, Oct. 22, 1932, in Lancasrter, he was a son of Chauncey and Jean Bauman Griffiths. Surviving, besides his second wife, are a son Kevin of Peoria, Ariz.; a daughter, Kelly Morris of this city; a brother, Boyd of York; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister Charlotte Perry. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the church, 369 Broad St., Montoursville, with the Rev. Jeffrey Zetto, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Lancaster. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Kaufman’s, 2102 Northway Road.

Elenar M. Kriner
Elenar M. Kriner, 81, formerly of DuBoistown, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at Williamsport Home, following a brief illness. Her husband, Arthur W. Kriner Sr., died Jan. 20, 1986. She was a member Lycoming Centre Presbyterian Church, Hepburnville. Born April 8, 1919, in Laporte, she was a daughter of George Abraham and Bessie Ethel McBride Palmatier. Surviving are, three sons, Arthur W. Jr. of this city, David G. Linden and J. Paul, both of South Williamsport; a brother, George Palmatier of Elmira, N.Y.; a sister, Shirley R. Wettlaufer of this city; 22 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Dennis G.; a brother, Dennis Palmatier; two sisters, Lula Hyatt and Alda Vought; The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave., with the Rev. William J. Younger, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight. The family will provide the flowers.

Hilda C. Phillips
Hilda C. Phillips, 85, of 525 Broadway, Hughesville, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at the Valley View Nursing Center, Montoursville. She was a cook at the former Lysock View Nursing Home, and cooked for seven years at Fry’s Commissary, Muncy. She also worked at the former Weldon’s Manufacturing, Muncy. She was a member of the Celestial Rebecca Lodge #80, Muncy, the Ramblers Club, Muncy, and a former member of the Lairdville Volunteer Fire Department. She was a member of St. Marks Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lairdsville and the Lutheran Women. Born Dec. 9, 1914, in Sullivan County, she was a daughter of Brady Monroe and Fannie Alice Dugan Secules. Surviving are two daughters, Betty L. Stiger and Alice J. Andrews, both of Hughesville; three grandsons, Rodney R., Steven W. and Todd F. Stiger; and a great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a twin brother, Paul C. Secules. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at McCarty-Thomas’, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with the Rev. Kathleen Shuck officiating. Burial will be in Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday with a Rebecca Lodge service at 8 p.m. The family will provide the flowers.

Hiram H. Reed Jr.
Hiram H. “Skip” Reed Jr. 75, of 1542 Memorial Ave., died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at home. He and his wife, the former Doris J. Ruch, observed their 24th wedding anniversary June 19. He was employed at Avco-Lycoming for more than 30 years. He was a member of Chapter Union Local 787 United Auto Workers. He was a graduate of Williamsport High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a founding member of First Southern Baptist Church. Born Aug. 20, 1925, in this city, he was a son of Hiram H. and Geraldine Curns Reed Sr. Surviving, besides his wife, are five daughters, Aletha Weyburn of Pensacola, Fla., Carol Lennig of this city, Debra Lowmiller of Cogan Station, Barbara Stere of this city, Susan Clemente of Las Vegas, Nev.; three sons, Hiram H. of this city, James of Cogan Station and Bill of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; a brother, Carl of Avis; 24 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Louise Smith and a son William. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sanders’, 821 Diamond St., with the Rev. Kenton Hunt, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 Friday.

Zelma H. Sholes
Zelma H. Sholes, 82, of 1060 West Minster Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at home. Her first husband, Paul F. Deitrich, died April 30 1953. She and her second husband, Jesse F. Sholes, observed their 42nd wedding anniversary Jan. 11. She was a self employed seamstress for 60 years. She was a member of Chapter 321 Order of the Eastern Star, Travelers Protective Association, Past president of VFW Auxiliary, Nescopeck and past president of Defender Fire Co. Auxiliary, Berwick. Past president, secretary, treasurer and chaplain of Grottoettes, South Williamsport, she was treasurer of Zany Clowns Zafar Grotto and started JESZEL, children’s clown unit. She was a member of Billtown Clowns. She was involved in Boy Scouts of America. She was a graduate of Berwick High School She was a member of Balls Mills United Methodist Church. Born March 6, 1918, in Berwick, she was a daughter of Leland C. and Iva E. Schweppenheiser Harmon. Surviving, besides her husband, are five sons, Barry F. Deitrich of Berwick, Craig H. Deitrich of Canton, Dennis Deitrich of Harrison, Ark., Allan F. Sholes of Wheaton, Ill. and Robert L. Sholes of this city; three daughters, Paulette E. Harry of Monroeville, Diane M. Gouldthread of Northumberland and Janis F. Smith of this city; two sisters, Norma Shoemaker and twin sister, Zelda Unger, both of Berwick; a brother LaRue Harmon of Fruitland Park, Fla.; 21 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church, Bloomingrove Road and Route 973 East, Cogan Station, with the Rev. James R. Sunderland Jr., her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Elan Memorial Park Bloomsburg. Friends may call at Sanders’, 821 Diamond St. from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday.

Albert LaRue Yeagle
Albert LaRue Yeagle, 92, of 17625 S.W. 119th Ave., Miami, Fla., formerly of Montgomery, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, in Deering Hospital, Miami. He and his wife, the former Ruth Ella Wentzel, would have observed their 70th wedding anniversary Nov. 27. He was employed by Yeagle’s Homemade Ice Cream and built Yeagle’s Snack Bar in Montgomery, now the Station House Restaurant. Before that, he was employed at Sheffers Dewart Creamery and Bethlehem Steel. He was a member of Cutler Ridge United Methodist Church, Miami, Fla. He was a life member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 171, Milton. Born Nov. 14, 1908, in Alvira, he was a son of William John and Sylvia Mae Yeagle. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Thomas W. of Crystal Falls, Mich. and Ronald L. of Miami; a sister, Sarah Fritz; three grandchildren, Pamela A. Young, Jerome L. Yeagle and Angela J. Lilly; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Harding and Dorothy Jones; and a brother, Arthur. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Fairview Cemetery, with the Rev. Roosevelt Brown officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Betzer’s, 40 E. Houston Ave., Montgomery.

Gordon Rhulan Cooper
A local memorial service will be Dec. 2, for Gordon Rhulan Cooper, 40, of 324 Park Ave., who died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. He was a paraprofessional, working with special needs students at Williamsport Area High School, had begun to operate a catering business and was co-owner of BIG Entertainment. He also had worked for BLAST Intermediate Unit 17 and the Lycoming County Literacy Program. Previous to that he founded Market Street West designed to improve economic opportunities for businesses in West Philadelphia, and was a journalist for the West Philadelphia Scene newspaper. He also helped manage the Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network and worked with the city’s Community Intervention Program. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He was a son of William Rhulan and Marjorie Pitts Cooper. Surviving are his father of Jackson, Mich.; two sisters, Karen I. of Philadelphia and Carol Clark of Willingboro, N.J.; and four nephews. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church, Auburn Avenue, Swedensborough, N.J. Friends may call at Edwards and Son’s, 208 E. Commerce St., Bridgeton, N.J., from 9 to 11 a.m. The local service will be in the church.

Edna B. DuBois
Edna B. DuBois, 91, formerly of Muncy, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, in Muncy Valley Hospital. Her husband, Charles A. DuBois, died March 17, 1970. She was employed as a shoe packer and box printer by the Endicott Johnson Shoe Co., Johnson City, N.Y. She was a member of Moreland Baptist Church. She enjoyed hunting, gardening and crocheting. Born March 2, 1909, in Moreland Township., she was a daughter of Nelson H. and Mary Laura Whipple Lowe. Surviving are three brothers, Donald F., Mac D., Sr. and Nelson H. Lowe, all of Muncy; and two sisters, Sylvia L. Lyon and Janet C. Watts, both of Muncy. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert W., Max D., Nile and Paul S. Lowe; and a sister, Lois Waldman. Private services will be at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Carl G. Harris officiating. Burial will be in the Vestal Hills Memorial Park, Vestal, N.Y. Arrangements are being handled by Betzer’s, 108 N. Main St., Muncy. n Riverside Cemetery, Lancaster. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Kaufman’s, 2102 Northway Road.
