Rev. Richard H. Ryder
The Rev. Richard H. Ryder, 67 of 1306 Walter Ellison Dr., Lockhart, Texas, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, in Texas. He was a Unityville native. Ryder was pastor of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ), serving parishes in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Texas. Born Sept. 8, 1933, he was a son of Harold and Dorothy Kitzmiller Ryder. Surviving are his wife, Yvonne Lions Ryder; two sons, Rev. Bradford of Ennis, Texas, and Brett of Fort Worth, Texas; two daughters, Angela Bado of McKinney, Texas, and Nan Ryder of Austin, Texas; a sister, Grace Lore of Hughesville; a brother, Thomas of Keller, Texas; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in Lockhart.

Edward L. Cox
LOCK HAVEN - Edward L. Cox, 73, of 101 Irwin St. died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at Susqueview Nursing Home. He retired in 1968 from the Army after 20 years, including two tours in Vietnam, and had served two years in the Navy. He received a citation for meritorious service and a medal of commendation for meritorious achievement. He later was a dispatcher for the Lock Haven Police Department. He was a Methodist. Born here Feb. 25, 1927, he was a son of Arthur L. and Clara M. Young Cox. Survivors include two daughters, Eva M. Severino of this community and Linda L. Peters of Bellefonte; three sisters, Margaret Smith and Carol Cox of this community and Shirley Herr in California; four granddaughters; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Rhinehart. Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Helt Hanna Kline’s, 232 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall.

Jay E. Hemskey
Jay E. Hemskey, 77, of Camp Hill, formerly of the Lock Haven area, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at Harrisburg Hospital. He and his wife, the former Elizabeth McHugh, celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary July 9. He was a graduate of Beccaria Coalport Irvona High School and Lycoming College and received a master’s degree from Penn State University. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He had been executive director of the state Department of Welfare in Clinton County and later was a policy writer for the Department of Welfare in Harrisburg. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Camp Hill. Born Oct. 12, 1923, in Beaver Valley, he was a son of John and Eva Dessie Gates Hemskey. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Eva Lyn Mills, and a son, John Jay, both of Mechanicsburg; four brothers, Lemoine, Iona Black and Verna, all of Beaver Valley, and the Rev. Jack Hemskey of Vero Beach, Fla.; a grandson, Steven Mills; a granddaughter, Meredith A. Mills. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Gibbons’, Coalport, with the Rev. Jack Hemskey, his brother, and the Rev. Sonnie Fish officiating. Burial will be in the Beaver Valley Cemetery, Flinton. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and at the funeral home from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Kathy A. Mosteller
Kathy Ann Mosteller, 44, of Muncy died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at the home of her parents. She and her husband, Leroy C. Mosteller Sr., celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary Feb. 4. She was a nurse for the Susquehanna Health System for 22 years and office nurse for Dr. Richard Illes the past four years. She was a 1974 graduate of Wiliamsport Area High School and a 1977 graduate of the Williamsport Hospital School of Nursing. She was a Little League team mother and an assistant Girl Scout leader. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. Born June 11, 1956, in this city, she was a daughter of Carl H. and Loretta Bastian Floyd. Surviving, besides her husband and her parents of this city, are a son, Leroy C. Jr., and a daughter, Laurie Lee, both at home; a sister, Karen E. Kemmler of South Williamsport; two brothers, Kevin L. Floyd of this city and Keith E. Floyd of Willow Street, Pa.; and a grandfather, the Rev. Clyde Bastian of this city. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 2101 Newberry St. Interment will be in Linwood Cemetery, McElhattan.

Mary M. Oehrli
Mary M. Oehrli, 95, formerly of the 600 block of West Southern Avenue, South Williamsport, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at Manor Care South. Her husband, Miles P. Oehrli, died in 1986. She was a member of New Covenant United Church of Christ. She was a homemaker. Born May 13, 1905, in this city, she was a daughter of John F. and Katherine Schweikle Fischer. Surviving are nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Mary Catherine; a brother, Clarence Fischer; and a sister, Katherine Bower. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Noll’s 1 E. Central Ave., South Williamsport, with her pastor, the Rev. Dr. Bruce Druckenmiller, officiating. Interment will be in Wildwood Cemetery. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers.

Carol H. Shaw
MANSFIELD - Carol Hartley Shaw, 64, of this borough, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000. She and her husband, Jack Shaw, celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary earlier this year. She taught elementary and high school and was a guidance counselor at both levels. She also taught at Mansfield University. She graduated from the State University of New York, Genesco, and Alfred University. She was a founder, eidtor and publisher of the Friendship Enterprise newspaper. She was a member of the Mansfield Business and Professional Women’s Association. Born Feb. 28, 1936, in Cuba, N.Y., she was a daughter of Raymond and Doris Hiscutt Hartley. Surviving, besides her husband, are two daughters, Heather of Atlanta, Ga., and Colette of Lancaster; a son, Paul R. at home; and a sister, Paula Robinson of Cuba, N.Y. A memorial service will be at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church here with the Revs. John Kirk and Adele Wilcox officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Wilston’s 18 N. Main St.

Florence E. Wallace
LOCK HAVEN - Florence Elizabeth Wallace, 93, of 25 Cree Drive died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, in the emergency room of Lock Haven Hospital. Her husband, Donald C. Wallace, died in 1951. She was a graduate of William Penn High School, Philadelphia, and Glassboro State College. She was employed at the Deaf School in Philadelphia and was an elementary school teacher in Berlin, N.J. She was a member of the New Jersey Retired Teachers Association, the New Jersey Audobon Society and the National Geographic Society. She was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church here. She was a volunteer at Lock Haven Hospital Extended Care Unit and Susqueview. Born Jan. 29, 1907, she was a daughter of John and Laura Gilpin Scofield. Surviving are a daughter, Laura W. Long of Lock Haven; a son, Donald C. Wallace Jr. of Collingwood, N.J.; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two sisters, Edith Schofield and Bonnie Dougherty. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Helt Hanna Kline’s, 232 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall, with the Rev. James E. VanZandt officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Helen M. Bauer
Helen M. Bauer, 93, of the Bucktail Medical Center Extended Care Unit, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000. Her husband, William H. Bauer, died Dec. 5, 1954. She was a cook for the YMCA in Renovo, was employed in the railroad shops during World War II and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Renovo. Born Feb. 5, 1907, in Muncy, she was a daughter of Thomas and Cora B. Hess Walize. Surviving are three grandsons, Jim, William Jr. and Joseph; two granddaughters, Joyce Stewart and Marjorie Jones; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a son, William K. Bauer, four brothers and three sisters. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Renovo, with Father Donald Boslett officiating. Friends may call at Maxwell’s, 205 Fifth Street, Renovo, from 9:30 to 10:30 Wednesday.

Viola H. Bray
Viola H. Bray, 90, of this city died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at Sycamore Manor. Her husband, Edgar J. Bray, died June 8, 1959. She retired in 1970 after 27 years as a laborotory technician for C.A. Reed Co. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. Born Sept. 23, 1910, in Benton, she was a daughter of Rolland E. and Cora Laubach Hess. There are no survivors. A graveside service will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Twin Hills Memorial Park, with the Rev. H. Frank Showers Jr. officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville.

Paul R. Bussler
Paul R. Bussler, 85, of 1074 Lower Manor Road died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at Williamsport Hospital emergency room. He was the widower of the former Marie D. Sites. He and his second wife, Mary E. Schramm, observed their 30th wedding anniversary Oct. 5. He retired in 1980 as field and service flightline mechanic for Textron after 40 years. He was a model-plane builder. Born Oct. 5, 1915, in Sonestown, he was a son of Lee Royal and Delia Upman Bussler. Surviving, besides his second wife, are a brother, Jack U. of this city; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph, and two sisters, Dorothy Hamilton and Imogene Bussler. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Crouse’s, 133 E. Third St. Burial will be in Pleasant Hills Cemetery, Hughesville. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 1 p.m.

Helen Kinney Clendenin
Helen Kinney Clendenin, 96, of Rosview Manor died there Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000. Her husband, John Carson Clendenin, died Aug. 21, 1982. She was a fourth-grade teacher in the area and in Washington, D.C. She retired in 1976. She was a member of the Organization of Retired State Teachers of Maryland, a volunteer at National Portrait Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Wheel Inn. She was a graduate of Lock Haven Normal School and received her bachelors degree from Lock Haven State Teachers College. She was a member of Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, Washington, D.C., and Trout Run United Methodist Church. Born Nov. 3, 1904, in Rose Valley, she was a daughter of James and Gertrude Wilson Kinney. Surviving are a son, Peter C. of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Lucinda B. Scott; and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church in Trout Run, with the Rev. Sandi Foster officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St.

Elsie Ann Embick
LOCK HAVEN - Elsie Ann Embick, 81, formerly of Sugar Valley, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, in Lock Haven Hospital. Her husband, Larue Embick, died in 1969. She was Protestant by faith and attended Sugar Valley Schools. Born May 25, 1919, in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of Samuel and Elsie Marquardt Musick. Surviving are a son, Samuel M. Embick of North Bend; and two brothers, Dick Musick in California and Don Musick in Washington. She was preceded in death by a brother, Sam. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Welker’s, 95 E. Main St., Loganton, with the Rev. Luthers Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Mount Union Cemetery, Carroll. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Kathryn J. Kauderman
Kathryn J. Bergstrom Kauderman, 81, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at the Williamsport Home. Her husband, Albert Y. Kauderman, died Feb. 24, 1974. She retired after 12 years as a secretary for Susquehanna Legal Services and previously at Central Cable Corp. and Scripture Press. She had been a Christian education director in West Virginia, Michigan and Ohio. She was a member of Trinity Gospel Church and was a Sunday school teacher and pianist. She was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church, Jersey Shore. Surviving are a son, John Albert of Valrico, Fla.; a daughter, Joy Coleman of this city; a sister, Marjorie Larson of Waterville; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Bergstrom Jr. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St., with the Rev. Phillip J. Lesko, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 1 p.m.

Chester Leonard
Chester Leonard, 76, of Kernersville, N.C., a former area resident, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000. He retired from the Army in 1967. Surviving are two sons, David and Gary, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a daughter, Jackie Bridges of Raleigh, N.C.; two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren. Services will be in Salisbury, N.C.

Sara G. Rude McKee
WELLSBORO - Sara G. Rude McKee, 89, of Wellsboro died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at Carleton Home. She and her husband, Laurence W. McKee, observed their 69th wedding anniversary Aug. 27. She was known for her cross-stitching. She was a charter member of Treasured Stitchery, the Wellsboro Chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America, Wellsboro Art Club and Wednesday Morning Musicales. She was a graduate of Pompton High School, Pompton, N.J., and attended nursing school in Patterson, N.J. She was a member of Wellsboro United Methodist Church and the Sarah Circle. Born May 14, 1911, in McAfee, N.J., she was a daughter of Winfield C. and Grace Masker Rude. Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, Robert L. of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Arthur W. of Hollis, N.H.; a daughter, Nanci M. Turker of Wellsboro; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Delia Kimble, Stells Myers, Elizabeth Dow and Marjorie Rude, and two brothers, Harold and Lynn Rude. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., with the Rev. Eugene A. Charsky officiating. Burial will be Friday in Sylvan Lawn Cemetery, Greene, N.Y. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight.

Tammy Jo Pugh
RENOVO - Services have been announced for Tammy Jo Pugh, 36, of 525 Farwell Ave., who was reported missing Sept. 20, 2000. She was employed by M&D Graphics, South Renovo, and had been employed by Dremel Printing and Keystone Bindery. She was a graduate of Bucktail Area High School. She attended Grace Baptist Church and Hyner Methodist Church. Born April 21, 1964, in Renovo, she was a daughter of LaRue and Violet R. Englert Pugh. Surviving, besides her parents of Renovo, are her fiance, Marvin Lunger; a daughter, Megan Bibey, at home; two sisters, Katrina of Renovo and Kimberly of Lamar; and two brothers, Randy of Renovo and LaRue Jr. of Dillsburg. She was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Clyde and Dorothy Englert, and paternal grandparents, the Rev. Kern and Kathleen Pugh. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church, Route 120, North Bend, with the Rev. Mahlon Nevel officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park, Dunnstable Township, Clinton County. Arrangements are being handled by Yost-Gedon’s, 121 W. Main St., Lock Haven.

Alfons M. Smokowicz Sr.
Alfons M. “Smokey” Smokowicz Sr., 80, of 875 Montour Blvd., Danville, formerly of Montoursville, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at Maria Joseph Manor. His wife, the former Mary A. Lucas, died Aug. 14, 1981. He owned Alfons Smokowicz General Coal Hauling and Excavation and Bellair Coal Sales. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Shamokin and Mount Carmel, Brady Fire Co., Kulpmont American Legion, Kulpmont Veterans of Foreign Wars, West End Fire Co., Kulpmont, and Independence Fire Co., Shamokin. Born Dec. 10, 1919, in Shamokin, he was a son of Joseph and Catherine Wilk Smokowicz. Surviving are two sons, Alfons Jr. of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Dennis of Los Angles, Calif.; four daughters, Carol Catino of Montoursville, Donna Leshko of Wyomissing, Mary Tondorna of Effort and Christine Bixler of Elysburg; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson; two brothers, Andrew and Albert; and a sister, Agnes Payor. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church, Elysburg, with the Revs. Charles R. Slough and Robert Mack officiating. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery, Bear Gap. Friends may call at Lucas’, 120 S. Market St., Shamokin, from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m.
