The funeral is Dec. 2 for Anna M. Wengert, 91, of 1900 Ravine Road, who died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in Williamsport Home. Her husband, Norman A. Wengert, died March 3, 1991. She taught English, girls health and physical education at Hamburg High School, Hamburg, and coached sports and cheerleading. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Hamburg, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She was a graduate of Hamburg High School and Temple University. Born Sept. 24, 1909, in Hamburg, she was a daughter of Abram and Anna Oberholtzer. Surviving are a son, Dr. Norman E. Wengert of this city; two brothers, Bruce Oberholtzer of Hamburg and William Oberholtzer of Bethlehem; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by seven brothers. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. in the church, Third and Island streets, Hamburg, with the Rev. Larry Frank officiating. Interment will be in St. Johns Cemetery, Hamburg. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Crouse’s, 133 E. Third St.
Lois G. Goodman
Lois G. Goodman, 87, formerly of the 2700 block of Newberry St., died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at the home of her daughter, 1220 Bush Road, Abingdon, Md. She formerly worked at C.A. Reed, Williamsport Area Community College, Wagner & Sullivan Architectural Firm, and Hope Enterprises. She was a 1931 graduate of Williamsport High School and a graduate of Miss Wheaton’s Business School. She was a lifelong member of Lycoming Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, choir member and president of the Women’s Association. Born Nov. 22, 1913, in Jersey Shore, she was a daughter of James R. and Lulu Riddell Gamble. Surviving are a son, Dr. Terrence L. Goodman of Morehead City, N. C.; a daughter, Joan A. Palmer, with whom she lived; a brother, James R. Gamble Jr. of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Betty Pick, of this city; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, 825 Arch St., with the Rev. Darlene K. Little, Bethel Presbyterian Church officiating. David L. Bierly
David L. Bierly, 50, of 1020 First Ave. died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in Roseview Manor. He and his wife, the former Sandra M. Strouse, observed their 16th wedding anniversary May 12. He was a self employed building contractor. He was a member of Church of the Annunciation. He was a 1968 graduate of Jersey Shore High School. He was also a graduate of the former Williamsport Area Community College and Kansas State University. He was a member of Garrett Cochran American Legion Post 1, Billy O. Brandt, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5859, Jersey Shore, a former member of the Vietnam War Veterans Post in Hughesville, and a member of the Naval Enlisted Reserve Association. While serving as a member of the National Guard, he was an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corp., Wahoo Division. He was an Army Vietnam War Veteran and served three tours of duty in Vietnam. He was the recipient of a Bronze Star. He was a volunteer of the Red Cross for many years. Born, Nov. 14, 1950, in Jersey Shore, he was a son of Lawrence and Francis Jones Bierly. Surviving, besides his wife, are four sons, Ryan D., Michael F., Sean E., and Devin J, all at home; and three sisters, Phoebetta Budinger of McElhattan, Linda V. Bierly of Camp Hill and Cindy Marshall of Jersey Shore. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the church, W. Fourth and Walnut Streets, with the Rev. John Manno, officiating. Josephine M. Campbell
Josephine M. Campbell, 79, of 249 Campbell Road, Trout Run, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, in Valley View Nursing Center. She and her husband, Clyde L. Campbell, observed their 45th wedding anniversary Feb. 16. She was a homemaker. She was a den mother for cub scouts. She was a member of White Pine United Methodist Church and a Sunday school teacher. Born July 8, 1921, in Eldred Township, she was a daughter of John L. and Elizabeth Weinman Casner. Surviving, besides her husband, are a son, Thomas of White Pine; two daughters, Mary Stine of Trout Run and Doris Wampler of Orrtanna; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois and a sister Doris Williams. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Harold E. Miller, her pastor, officiating. Frederick W. Busshaus
Frederick W. “Fritz” Busshaus, 79, of Cross Fork, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, at home. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Stoecken. He retired in 1983 from Consolidated Gas Co., and had previously worked for Fairman Drilling Co. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. at Ole Bull and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Cross Fork Sportsmen Club, Kettle Creek Fire Co. and Ambulance Association, Blain Sportsmen Club, Blain Ambulance Association and Elks Lodge 334. He was a member of Loysville Presbyterian Church, Loysville. Born July 13, 1921, in Cross Fork, he was a son of Francis J. and Annie M. Wolfgang Busshaus. Surviving are his second wife, the former Jane Clark; a son Paul of Apollo; five daughters, Catherine Corkins of Milford, N.J., Susan White of Willow Street, Nancy Swanson of East Liverpool, Ohio, Janet of Lebanon and Sarah Allen of State College; two stepsons, Gary and Donald Clark, both of Loysville; a stepdaughter, Jo Shuman of Loysville; a brother, William of Cross Fork; four sisters, Elizabeth Gaiss of Corning, N.Y., Margaret Dunmire of Millheim, Mary Ann Helmle of Pottstown and Sr. Ruth of Rochester, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Jr. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Maxwell’s, 205 Fifth St., Renovo, with the Rev. Donald Boslett, officiating. Burial will be private. Myrtle R. Dinan
JERSEY SHORE - Myrtle R. Dinan, 97, a resident of ManorCare Health Services, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, where she had lived since 1991. Her first husband, James Snead, died in 1930, and her second husband, James R. Dinan, died in 1975. She and her second husband operated Dinan’s Bake Shop and Restaurant until 1975. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, here. She enjoyed crocheting and playing piano. Born May 10, 1903, in Statesville, she was a daughter of Charles and Mattie Lou Snead Vickes. Surviving are a sister, Maxine S. Musher of Wareham, Mass.; a grandson, Michael Sr.; two great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Billie S. Lundy. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Rearick-Carpenter’s, 1002 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore. Burial will be in Jersey Shore Cemetery. Betty J. Reidy, 72, of 2009 Misner Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. She was retired from Bishop Neuman High School, where she worked as cafeteria manager for 20 years. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Born Feb. 28, 1928, in this city, she was a daughter of Luther P. Sr. and Florence K. Logan Kreitz. Surviving are three sons, John E. Jr. of Biloxi, Miss., Richard A. of this city, and Timothy M. of Key West, Fla; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, James C. Kreitz Sr. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Sanders’, 821 Diamond St. with the Rev. Melvin D. Bole, Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. The family will provide the flowers. George Hess McCormick
JERSEY SHORE - George Hess “Jeff” McCormick, 63, of 560 Shaffer Lane, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Jersey Shore Hospital. He and his wife, the former Carol E. Brown, would have observed their 16th wedding anniversary Dec. 22. He taught at Lock Haven High School and the Germantown Academy in Philadelphia. He was the county librarian at Ross Library in Lock Haven from 1979 to 1998. While employed there, he was credited with implementing several programs including preschool mobile programs, services to the elderly, and the books by mail program. Previously, he was a draftsman at Piper Aircraft. His artistic achievements include jewelry design for Dan Reinhold Silversmith, and various art mediums including both drawing and painting. Some of his art may be seen at the children’s room in the Ross Library. He was a 1955 graduate of Lock Haven High School and attended Philadelphia Museum of Art. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Gregory H. McCormick of Berkely, Calif.; a daughter, Nina H. McCormick of Avis; a stepson, Robert Masorti Jr. of Jersey Shore; two stepdaughters, Barbara Masorti of Lock Haven and Angela Davis of Pottsgrove; two brothers, William H. McCormick of Baltimore, Md. and John F. McCormick of Woolrich; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen F. McCormick. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Avis United Methodist Church, Park and Prospect Streets, Avis. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Woodring officiating. MUNCY - Martha E. Cook, 91, of 2040 Route 405 Highway, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in the Muncy Valley Hospital skilled nursing unit. Her husband of 58 years, Carl H. “Dixie” Cook, died May 24, 1985. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Hughesville. Born May 16, 1909, in Berwick, she was a daughter of Edward and Gertrude Appleman. Surviving are two nephews, John and Mike Carson; a niece, Jackie Pryor; and Ken and Donna Weimer, with whom she lived. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Vera Carson and Catherine Jones. Services will be held at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Bethany Wood officiating. Interment will be in Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy. The family will provide the flowers. Bertha P. Darling
MUNCY - Bertha P. Darling, 90, of 91 Odell Road, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, inMuncy Valley Hospital. Her husband, Edward Darling, died in 1964. She was retired from the former Arrow Shirts, Williamsport. She was a member of Faith Weslyan Church in Williamsport. Born March 19, 1910, in Williamsport, she was a daughter of George and Alta Eck Ginter. Surviving are a daughter, Emily P. Moore with whom she resided; a step daughter, Ernestine Crawford of Watsontown; two sisters, Verna Starr of Phoenix, Ariz. and Della Kish of this city; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St.,Montoursville, with the Rev. Marty Kiggins, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park. LOGANTON - Lynn E. Geyer, 74, of this borough, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at Lock Haven Hospital. He and his wife, Miriam M. Wagner Geyer, observed their 48th wedding anniversary Nov. 1. He retired from Gettigs, Spring Mills and worked for James P. Webb Road Construction. He was a member of Southern Clinton Sportsmen Club. Born Feb. 8, 1926, in Lock Haven, he was a son of Michael and Elizabeth Grenninger Geyer. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Michael Geyer of Loganton; a daughter, Tammy Shady of Loganton; six brothers, Roy Vonada of Loganton, Arnold of Mill Hall, Larue of Loganton, Melvin of Jersey Shore, and Alvin and Leo, both of Lock Haven; two sisters, Irene Karstetter of Loganton and Maxine Wagner of Aaronsburg; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Neal and Floyd. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Welker’s, 95 E. Main St., Loganton, with the Rev. Luther Nelson, officiating. WELLSBORO - Kathleen Drew Grinnell Roby, 83, of Broad Acres Health and Rehabilitation Center, died there Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000. Her husband, Walter Martin Roby, died in 1993. She was a retired beautician and had shops in Elmira, N.Y. and Wellsboro. She was a member of the Webb Mills United Methodist Church, Webb Mills, N.Y. Born July 17, 1917, in this borough, she was a daughter of Vern and Alma Myers Drew. Surviving are a son, Ted Grinnell of Horseheads, N.Y.; two daughters, Kay Banfield of Sayre and Donna Manchester of Pine City, N.Y.; three brothers, Raymond Drew of Millport, N.Y., Rex Drew of Horseheads, N.Y. and Jack Drew of Nazareth; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St. with the Rev. Eugene A. Charsky officiating. Interment will be at West Branch Cemetery. AVIS - Linda J. Smith, 51, of 522 Prospect Ave. died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Jersey Shore Hospital. She and her husband, Lenus R. Smith, observed their 28th wedding anniversary May 15. She was a 1967 graduate of Jersey Shore High School, a graduate of the former Williamsport Area Community College, where trained to be a practical nurse. She was a 1979 graduate of the Word of Life Bible Institute, Schroon Lake, N.Y. She was an L.P.N. aide in the Jersey Shore School District from 1994 to 1998, a private duty nurse for Professional Skills Inc. and a teacher at the Walnut Street Christian School, Jersey Shore. She was the former Miss Hope for Lycoming County with the American Cancer Society from 1976 to 1977 and an equestrian. She was a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church, Jersey Shore. Born July 6, 1949, in Jersey Shore, she was a daughter of Merrill L. and A. Joyce Allison Bailey of Avis. Surviving are two sons, Micah E. and Brad M., both at home; a daughter, Sarah L. Smith at home; three brothers, Timothy C. of Jersey Shore, Thomas M. of Virginia Beach, Va. and Jamie of Avis; and three sisters, Nancy D. Houtz of Jersey Shore, Becky M. Bassett of Cogan Station and Lisa L. Boob of Jersey Shore. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the church, 134 Walnut St., Jersey Shore, with the Rev. George C. Grossman officiating. Charles E. Lord
Charles E. Lord, 77, of 3 S. Pearl St., Wernersville, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at home. He was a 1941 graduate of Williamsport High School. He served in the Navy during WW II and saw action with the Pacific Fleet aboard the destroyer USS Leary. He was employed as supervisor of data processing at the New England Central Atlantic States for Atlantic Richfield ARCO, Spring Township, for 45 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Womelsdorf VFW. Born in Williamsport, he was a son of Leslie B. and Gladys I. Tice Lord. Surviving are two sons, Richard D. of Mohnton and Leslie H. of Wernersville; two daughters, Susan E. Barker of Womelsdorf and Melenie K. Kochel of Wernersville; one brother, Walter E. of Williamsport; four sisters, Vida M. Heller of Watsontown, Arlene J. Wood of Sanford, Fla., Gladys J. McCloskey of Williamsport and Bernice A. Hockman of Williamsport; and three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, M. Emilie Taylor Lord. LOCK HAVEN - Ellen J. Hendricks Kaercher, 80, of 184 Susquehanna Ave., died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. She was a 1938 graduate of the former Lock Haven High School. She was a member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ. She worked for the former Piper Aircraft in Lock Haven. She was a homemaker who enjoyed her card club, the McDonalds Girls’ Breakfast Club, was active with the YMCA and its senior exercise group and was a former member of the Lock Haven Elks Auxiliary. Born Sept. 18, 1920, in Lock Haven, she was a daughter of Wilson T. and Verna Yost Seasholtz. Surviving are three sons, George Allen Hendricks of Lock Haven, Richard Keith Hendricks Sr. of Millersville, Md. and Timothy Ray Hendricks of Mill Hall; three step-sons, David W. Kaercher of Lock Haven, Jeffrey Kaercher of Lock Haven and J. Scott of Sunnyvale, Calif.; a step-daughter, Valerie Helminiak of Williamsport; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, George I. Hendricks and her second husband, George H. Kaercher. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Yost-Gedon’s, 121 W. Main St., with pastor John Silliman officiating. Burial will follow in the Rest Haven Memorial Park, Dunnstable Township. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Louis C. Schultz
BLOSSBURG - Louis C. Schultz, 79, of Hannibal St. died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Soldiers and Sailors Hospital, Wellsboro. He served as Blossburg postmaster for 20 years until he retired in 1978. He was a graduate of the former Covington High School. Schultz was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Mansfield. He was a member of several clubs and organizations, including the Corey Creek Country Club; the Hamilton Club; the Blossburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8730 Supreme Sacrifice; the Blossburg American Legion William B. Wilson Post 572, and the Wheel Inn, where he was a former secretary. Schultz was a member of Blossburg Lodge 350, F&AM; the Williamsport Consistory, the Irem Temple Shrine and the Tioga County Shriner’s Club. He was a charter member of the board of directors of the Tioga County Sports Hall of Fame. He was an avid Penn State fan. Born here July 3, 1921, he was a son of Louis E. and Winifred Cambers Schultz. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Ruth; a daughter, Pamela Bair of Rebersburg; two sons, Louis Jr. of Mechanicsburg and Joseph of Pittsburgh, and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Alan and William. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church, 117 S. Main St., with his pastor, the Rev. Cannon Rudolph Van der Hiel, officiating. Burial will be in Arbon Cemetery. Friends may call at Zwicharowski’s, 314 Granger St. from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday. A Masonic service will be held at the funeral home.
