RENOVO - Viola L. Shields, 74, of 214 St. Clair Ave., died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Lock Haven Hospital. She worked at the Sylvania Electric Plant in Emporium and later at the Piper Aircraft Plant in South Renovo. She was a member of First United Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed reading. She attended Renovo High School. Born Oct. 16, 1926, in Renovo, she was a daughter of Samuel and Ethel Fischer Belford. Surviving are two daughters, Sarah McGinness of Farrandsville and Kim Wycoff of Flemington; a son, Gene of State College; a sister, Ruth Casson of Chillocothe, Ohio; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene W. Shields. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church, Renovo, with the Rev. Edward D. Graboski officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Hyner. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Arrangements are being handled by Wetzler’s, 320 Main St., Mill Hall.

Beulah F. Roupp
TROUT RUN - Beulah F. Roupp, 87, of 19 Cowhide Lane, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at home. Her husband, Donald L. Paulhamus, died in 1960. She lived in White Pine for the past 20 years. Prior to that she lived in Jersey Shore, Salladasburg and Antes Fort. She was retired from the Jersey Shore Hospital kitchen staff. Born Dec. 8, 1912, in Salladasburg, she was a daughter of Anson and Alma Williamson Paulhamus. Surviving are four sons, Donald A. of Beaver Dams, Carl P. of Cogan Station, David B. of Lock Haven and Steven H. of Jersey Shore; four daughters, Dorothy M. Confer of Montgomery, Jean I. Willits of Antes Fort, Eileen W. Brown of White Pin, and Betty J. Brown of Punxsutawney; 38 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Bruce Paulhamus of Boone, Iowa; and a sister, Jean O’Dell of Hillsboro, Ore. She was preceded in death by a son, Torrence V. Roupp in 1999. The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Rearick-Carpenter’s, 1002 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore, with the Rev. Michael A. Guisewite of Trinity United Methodist Church, officiating. Friends may call from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Quiggle-Roupp Cemetery, Cogan House. The family will provide the flowers.

James E. Dowling
LINDEN - James E. Dowling, 53, of 41 Carpenter Park, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at home. He was employed by Textron-Lycoming, Williamsport. He was a 1966 graduate of Williamsport High School and the former Williamsport Area Community College. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Newberry Church of Christ. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 106 F&AM, Williamsport Consistory and Baldwin II Commandery. Born March 27, 1947, in Williamsport, he was the son of Carl E. and Patricia Ann Edwards Dowling. Surviving, besides his mother, are a son, James Michael, with the Navy in San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Andrea Marie Dowling of Charlotte, S.C.; three sisters, Carol Beckner of Hampton, Va., Sherry Neenan of city, and Norma Jean Dowling of Texas; a brother, Carl of Wellsboro; and two grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sanders’, 821 Diamond St., with his pastor, Ronald D. Savits, officiating. Burial will be in English Center Cemetery. A Masonic service will be8:30 a.m. Monday. Friends may call the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. The family will provide the flowers.

JoAnn M. Bonfatto
JoAnn M. Bonfatto, 64, of 1245 Centre St., Bellefonte, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at home after fighting lung cancer for over two years. A 1953 graduate of Lock Haven High School, she was involved in community theater. She was chairman of the Centre County Fresh Air Fund during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Also active in politics, she held various positions with the Centre County Republican Party and the Nittany Council of Republican Women. She worked at several women’s shops and was co-owner of “A-New-U” exercise parlor in State College. In 1976 she began working at South Hills School of Business and Technology, where she was primarily the financial aid officer, retiring in 1999. She was a member of Park Forest United Methodist Church in the 1970’s and later became a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Bellefonte. She served there on the Liturgy Council, as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and co-director of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Born Jan. 23, 1936, in Williamsport, she was a daughter of Horace “Sam” and Pearl Alexander Hazlett. Surviving, besides her husband, Francis Bonfatto, are three children of an earlier marriage to the late Charles “Bud” Yorks: Chuck Yorks of Lock Haven, Chip Yorks of Bonita Springs, Fla. and Julie Yorks Morter of Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Boyd Hazlett of Petaluma, Calif. and Cecil F. Hazlett of Lock Haven; and 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Bellefonte, followed by a Catholic Daughters Memorial Service. There will be no public visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Metzler’s, 206 N. Spring St., Bellefonte.

Brooks A. Boyden
WELLSBORO - Brooks A. Boyden, 83, a resident of Broad Acres Health and Rehabilitation Center, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at the center. He retired from A&P Tea Co., Horseheads, N.Y. He was a Baptist. He was a member of the Southern Tier Music Association and an Army veteran of WW II. Born Dec. 20, 1916, in Mansfield, he was a son of Horace P. and Edna Thornton Boyden. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Putnam and two brothers, Melvin Thornton and Stanley Boyden. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Wellsboro Cemetery, with Pastor Pete Tremblay officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., Wellsboro.

Betty Jane Bradney
HYNER - Betty Jane Bradney, 75, a village resident, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in Bucktail Medical Center, Renovo. She was the widow of Arthur Bradney, who died in 1968. She graduated from Benton High School. She was a Methodist. She enjoyed flowers and gardening. Born Oct. 16, 1925, in Hometown, she was a daughter of the late William T. and Elva Kaufman Kramer. Surviving are five brothers, Arthur Kramer of North Bend, Robert Kramer of Danville, Edward Kramer of Hyner, Herman “Bud” Kramer of Arvada, Colo. and George Kramer of Bloomsburg; two sisters, Ruth Scott of Bloomsburg and Dorothy Shoemaker of Glendive, Mont.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, LeRoy and William Kramer. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Maxwell’s, 205 Fifth St., Renovo, with the Rev. John Godissart officiating. Burial will be in Hyner Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Denver C. “Clif” Hensley
COGAN STATION - Denver C. “Clif” Hensley, 58, of 2101 State Route 973 West, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at the Cogan Station Post Office, where he was postmaster. He and his wife, the former Barbara J. Worth, observed their 38th wedding anniversary on Sept. 24. He was a member of the Hepburn Baptist Church. He was a 1961 graduate of Mifflin High School, Columbus, Ohio. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association. He was a Cherokee Native American. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in 1984 and became local postmaster in 1993. He retired from the Navy in 1982 after 23 years of service. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Born June 17, 1942, in Prestonsburg, Ky., he was a son of James and Garnet Mills Hensley. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Wendy Leigh Hensley of South Williamsport; five half-brothers and half-sisters, all in Ohio; and a grandson, Mark S. Howarth. There will be no funeral and no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave.

Linda J. Smith
AVIS - Linda J. Smith, 51, of 522 Prospect Ave., died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Jersey Shore Hospital. She and her husband, Lenus R. Smith, observed their 29th wedding anniversary on May 15. She was a 1967 graduate of Jersey Shore Area High School, a graduate of the former Williamsport Area Community College and a 1979 graduate of the Word of Life Bible Institute, Schroon Lake, N.Y. She was an licensed practical nurse aid in the Jersey Shore Area School District from 1994 to 1998, a private duty nurse for Professional Skills Inc. and a teacher at the Walnut Street Christian School, Jersey Shore. She was Miss Hope for Lycoming County Chapter of the American Cancer Society from in 1976. She was an avid equestrian. She was a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church, Jersey Shore. Born July 6, 1949, in Jersey Shore, she was a daughter of Merrill L. and A. Joyce Allison Bailey. Surviving, besides her husband and her parents of Avis, are two sons, Micah E. and Brad M., both at home; a daughter, Sarah L. Smith at home; three brothers, Timothy C. Bailey of Jersey Shore, Thomas M. Bailey of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jamie Bailey of Avis; and three sisters, Nancy D. Houtz and Lisa L. Boob, both of Jersey Shore, and Becky M. Bassett of Cogan Station. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church, 1311 Walnut St., Jersey Shore, with the Rev. George C. Grossman officiating. Burial will be in Jersey Shore Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Rearick-Carpenter’s, 1002 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore.

Robert E. Gutt
MILL HALL - Robert E. Gutt, 69, of 117 Aspen Lane, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at home. He and his wife, the former June Lobin, were married 43 years on Sept. 14. He attended elementary school in Renovo. He attended Temple University. He graduated in 1954 from the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music with a bachelor’s degree in music and a teaching diploma. He played with the “Jive Five.” He played piano for the Keystone Society. He was a member of St. Martins Catholic Church in Philadelphia and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Renovo. Born Nov. 5, 1931, in Renovo, he was a son of Michael and Sophie Kisko Gutt. Surviving, besides his wife are, a son, David M. of Mill Hall; two daughters, Donna Modelski of Philadelphia, and Celeste Gutt of Dewey Beach, Del.; four sisters, Anna Tome of York, Sister M. Thelma Gutt of Scranton, Pauline Hensel of Lock Haven and Irene Johnstonbaugh of Mill Hall; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Katherine and Margaret; a brother, Michael; and a grandson, Timothy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon Tuesday in St. Joseph’s Church, Renovo, with Rev. Donald Boslett officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hyner. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Maxwell’s, 205 Fifth St., Renovo.

Bertha S. Goldy
Bertha S. Goldy, 87, of Sheridan Street, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000. She was the widow of George K. Goldy. She was a homemaker and had worked for the Green Shoe Factory during the 1950’s. She was a member of the St. Ann’s Women’s Guild, the Top of the Hill Club and Annunciation Senior Citizens. She also volunteered at Divine Providence Hospital. She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Born April 15, 1913, in Nippenose Township, she was a daughter of John Thomas and Helena Shuhler Steppe. Surviving are two daughters, Georgia A. Buck of this city and Helena Moseley of Bricktown, N.J.; two brothers, Lewis Steppe and Howard Steppe, both of this city; two sisters, Mary Naughton and Lorretta Shurer, both of this city; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and John Steppe, and two sisters, Martha Eck and Anna Woll. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, 1220 Northway Road, with the Rev. Andrew Kurovsky officiating. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Allen and Redmond’s, 331 Elmira St. A Christian Wake Service will be at 7 p.m.

Dorothy J. Temple
MUNCY - Dorothy J. Temple, 69, of 132 Art Shaner Road, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in the Muncy Valley Hospital emergency room. Her husband of 43 years, R. Earl Temple, died in 1992. She was an employee of John’s Shirt Factory in Hughesville. She was a former cafeteria worker at Muncy Valley Hospital and for East Lycoming School District. She was a member of the Hughesville Senior Citizens and a past member of the Canusarago Grange, Muncy. She was a former 4H leader. She attended the Hughesville Evangelical Friends Church. Born Oct. 4, 1931, in Wolf Township, she was a daughter of Clarence C. and Gertrude T. Snyder Price. Surviving, besides her mother of Hughesville, are four daughters, Earla R. Temple of Northumberland, Anita J. Houseknecht of Hughesville, Mary B. Newhart of Muncy and Diane K. Johnson of Norwich, Ohio; three sons, David L. of Hughesville, Rodger N. of Muncy and Donald W. at home; two sisters, Charlotte O. Smith and Althea M. Smith, both of Muncy; and nine grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at McCarty-Thomas’, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with Rev. Dan Cale, of Friends Church, officiating. Burial will be in Morelan Lutheran Cemetery. Hazel L. Myers
Hazel L. Myers, 79, of 2140 Warrensville Road and formerly of the 600 block of Fifth Avenue, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in Valley View Nursing Center. She was the widow of Lee Irwin Myers. She retired in 1986 as a warehouse supervisor at the former GTE Sylvania Co., Montoursville, after 35 years of service. She previously worked at the former Moltz Chevrolet dealership as an office clerk. She was an avid bowler and was a member of the Women’s American Bowling Congress. She was a former member of the ladies auxiliary of the Royal P. Steinbacher Post 617, American Legion, South Williamsport. Born Feb. 21, 1921, in this city, she was a daughter of Glenn N. and Eva Josephine Blanchard Simcox. Surviving are a daughter, Judy L. Read of this city; two sisters, Sara Ida Simcox of Riverside, Ill. and Edith Cole of this city; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Egli, and a brother, Paul Simcox. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Uniontown Cemetery, Allenwood, with the Rev. Thomas J. Fetterholf officiating. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Noll’s, 1 E. Central Ave., South Williamsport.

Danielle May Brofee
DANVILLE - Danielle May Brofee, 12, of 316 E. Market St., died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at the home of her maternal grandparents, Doris and Jake Shellman, of South Williamsport. She was a seventh-grade student at Danville Middle School. Born Dec. 14, 1987, in Bloomsburg, she was a daughter of Jeff Brofee and Kim Shellman Brofee. Surviving, besides her father and stepmother, Sandra Seidel of Danville, and her mother of South Williamsport, and maternal grandparents, are a brother, Anthony Brofee of Danville; three stepbrothers, Joshua, Justin and Jarad Seidel, all of Danville; and paternal grandmother, Arlene Brofee of Danville. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Lee Brofee. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Brady’s, 320 Church St., with the Rev. Robert Driesen, pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church, South Williamsport, officiating. Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday.

Pauline Thomas Cebulka
MILL HALL - Pauline Thomas Cebulka, 79, of 310 S. Chestnut St., died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, in Susque-View Home, Lock Haven. Her husband, George H. Cebulka, died in 1975. She was employed at the former Hammermill Paper Co. for 11 years, retiring in 1984. She worked at Piper Aircraft, Lock Haven, from 1943 to 1947. At one point, she was the only woman mechanic at Piper. In addition, she attained a private flying license, a ground instructor rating and had more than 170 solo flying hours. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Lock Haven. She was a 1939 graduate of Blairstown High School, N.J. She was a volunteer at Susque-View until June 1999, with 15 years of service. Born March 24, 1921, in Hacketstown, N.J., she was a daughter of Spyros and Cofia Kitikidis Thomas. Surviving are three sons, Thomas J. of Mill Hall, Stephen R. of Newark, Del., and George H. III of Pittsburgh; a brother, Thomas Thomas of Verona, Va.; a sister, Mary Valmas of Palisades Park, N.J.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the church, 3 E. Walnut St., Lock Haven, with the Rev. Neil R. Dadey and Rev. Peter R. Cebulka, her nephew, officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Lock Haven. Friends may call at Moriarty-Dutcavich’s, 112 E. Church St., Lock Haven, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today. A vigil service will be at 8.
