Carl E. Gibson
Carl E. Gibson, 77, of 359 Wallis Run Road, Montoursville, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, in Williamsport Hospital. He and his wife, the former Lucille Hinkal, observed their 43rd wedding anniversary Sept. 20. He retired from PP&L. He was a member of American Legion Eugene Grafius Post 104, Danville Moose, Wheel Inn in Ralston and the Susquehannock Hunters. He was a member of the Loyalsock Mens’ Club, Three Quarter Century Club in Montoursville, 40 et 8 Club, and Travelers Protection Association. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Born Feb. 1, 1923, in Jersey Shore, he was a son of Thomas E. and Annabelle Stewart Gibson. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, William G. of this city; a daughter, Connie L. Sciacca of Oval; a brother, Mahlon T. of Larryville; three sisters, Mary G. Myers of Lock Haven, Doris G. Hafer of Athens, and Anne G. Fisher of Salladasburg; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with the Rev. Mark R. Applebee officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Dr. Donald H. Smith
Dr. Donald H. Smith, 61, a city native, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He was a graduate of Williamsport Area High School and Lehigh University, Bethlehem. He had a doctorate in Medicine from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia. He completed residency at Lankenau Hospital, Philadelphia. He was a veteran of the Air Force Reserve. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and retired from Easton Hospital in 1997, where he was chief of the Division of General Surgery, president of the medical staff and the director of surgical education. He was president of the Northampton County Medical Society, president of the Weller Center for Health Education and a board member of the United Way, Northampton County. He was a member of the Easton Rotary Club and vice president of the Eagles Mere Country Club. He was a president of the Pennsylvania Medical Society. Born Aug. 15, 1939, he was a son of Dr. J. Stanley and Eleanor Mussina Smith. Surviving are his wife, Nancy of Eagles Mere; three sons, Greg of Columbia, S.C., Jeff of Columbia, Mo. and Eric of Philadelphia; and a brother, J. Stanley. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Easton, with the Rev. James L. Gill officiating. Burial will be in Eagles Mere Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in the spring in Eagles Mere. Arrangements are being handled by Homer’s, 206 Water St., Dushore.

Mildred A. Neyhard
MILTON - Mildred A. Neyhard, 75, of this borough, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at home. Her husband, Carroll C., died Jan. 29, 1990, following 42 years of marriage. She once operated a candle-making business and was employed by Milton Truck Stop. She was a member of Washingtonville Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was a member of Pomona Grange 31, California Grange 941 and the Washingtonville Senior Center. Born April 27, 1925, in Limestoneville, Montour County, she was a daughter of Harvey E. and Phoebe D. Holdren Bogart. Surviving are her mother, a resident at Kramm’s Healthcare Center, Milton; four grandchildren, Susan K. Munsell, Tammy Neyhard Rice, Loretta L. Neyhard and James H. Neyhard; one stepgranddaughter; and one great-granddaughter. A son, Gary Wayne Neyhard, died Sept. 4, 1997. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Brooks’, 207 Broadway St., Turbotville, with the Rev. Melody Sell officiating. Burial will be in Washingtonville Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. California Grange 941 will conduct a memorial service at 8:30 p.m. The family will provide the flowers.

William P. Matty
William P. Matty, 75, of 740 Arch St. died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Williamsport Hospital. He and his wife, the former Corrine M. Vanderlin, observed their 54th wedding anniversary Jan. 3. Retiring in 1984, he was employed for 34 years by the former Avco, now Textron Lycoming. He was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. Born April 19, 1925, in Snow Shoe, he was a son of George and Mary Takash Matty. Surviving, besides his wife, are four sons, Larry W. of Cogan Station, Timothy L. of Montoursville, William P. of this city and John F. of Camp Hill; five daughters, Linda A. Bennett of Richboro, Mary E. Massic of Danville, Kathy M. Deptula of Lititz, Marsha A. Snyder of Newtown, and Barbara J. Larson of this city; two brothers, Rudolph J. of Tilton, N.H. and James D. of this city; six sisters, Albina Clark and Helen Matty, both of this city, Theresa Kreamer of Jersey Shore, Barbara Hawkes and Marcie Ann Buscher, both of Torrence, Calif., and Rose Marie Matty of Costa Mesa, Calif.; 23 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church, West Fourth and Walnut streets, with the Rev. John K. Manno officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave. from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Vigil service at 8:30 p.m. The family will provide the flowers.

Mary A. Egli
HUGHESVILLE - Mary A. Egli, 72, of 127 N. Second St., died Monday Dec. 11, 2000, in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. She and her husband, Lawrence O. L. Egli, observed their 53rd wedding anniversary Dec. 6. She attended the former Opps School, Moreland Township. She and her husband farmed in Muncy Creek Township until 1984. She was a member of Dairyman’s League and the Hughesville Garden Club. Born Aug. 18, 1928 in Moreland Township, she was a daughter of Norman and J. Blanche Smith Nichols. Surviving, besides her husband, are a son, Charles M. of Muncy; a sister, Dora Herr of Hughesville; three grandchildren, Tina Phillips, Charles Jr. and Candy Mae Woodside; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at McCarty-Thomas’, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with the Rev. James Savage and Tom Herr, her nephew, officiating. Burial will be in Muncy Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dorothy Schaeffer
The funeral and burial were Monday for Dorothy Marie Gresh Schaeffer, of Sunbury, a native of Montgomery, who died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, in Manor Care Nursing Home. She graduated from Williamsport High School in 1947. She was crowned Miss Greater Williamsport in 1947 and was Miss Pennsylvania in the Miss America Pageant. She had been a model in New York City and managed various restaurants. Born March 22, 1929, she was a daughter of Clyde and Ermina Nuss Gresh. Surviving are two brothers, William C. Gresh of Cogan Station and Marvin Kranson of Sunbury.

Dorothy E. Baily
WELLSBORO - A graveside service is Friday for Dorothy E. “Dottie” Baily, 78, formerly of Springfield, who died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, in Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. Her husband, Robert W. Baily Sr., died March 18, 1999. She was a graduate of Shamokin High School and attended Drexel University, Philadelphia. She retired from the Springfield School District after 29 years as food service manager. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Mary Wells Chapter 452 Order of Eastern Star, Cushing’s Battery “A,” Springfield Trail Club and Friends of the East Broad . Born July 10, 1922, in Phoenixville, she was a daughter of Frederick and Theresa Weikel Downes. Surviving are a son, Robert Jr. of Wellsboro; a daughter, Cindy Smith of Fairfax, Va.; a brother, Charles Downes of Bear, Del.; a sister, Eleanor Wharton of Lewistown; and five grandchildren. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. at the Wellsboro Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Robert K. Greer officiating. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, with Greer and the Rev. Eugene A. Charsky officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Tussy-Mosher’s, 139 Main St.

Bruce L. Bechtel
Bruce L. Bechtel, 76, of 727 Elmira St., died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at home. He worked at Brodart Company. He and his wife, the former Martina Martz, observed their 52nd wedding anniversary June 18. He was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church. He was a 1942 graduate of Williamsport High School. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Born July 30, 1924 in Lewisburg, he was a son of William Ralph and Olive Lepley Bechtel. Surviving, besides his wife, are three sons, Steven M. of this city, John W. of Saugerties, N.Y. and David B. of Manheim; three daughters, Carol B. Metzger of Linden, Linda A. Clark of Jersey Shore and Janet E. Johnson of Wytheville, Va.; a sister, Marion E. Darrow of Cleveland, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters. The memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Sanders’, 821 Diamond St., with the Rev. James H. Fladland officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Friday. The family will provide the flowers.

Rose B. Bryant
MAINESBURG - Rose B. Bryant, 90, of Salem, Ala., a native of Mainesburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Phenix City Health Care Center, Phenix City, Ala. Her husband, I. Waldo, died in 1994. She was a retired Medical Assistant. She was a member of State Road Baptist Church. Born Dec. 13, 1909, in Mainesburg, she was a daughter of Frank and Minnie Roblyer Makley. Surviving are a son, Harlan Case of Conroe, Texas; three daughters, June Case of Canisteo, N.Y., Dawn Hardina of Pahrump, Nev. and Elaine Raines of Salem, Ala.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Case. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Wilston’s, 18 N. Main St., Mansfield. Burial will be in State Road Cemetery, Mainesburg. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday.

Elizabeth H. Callahan
WELLSBORO - Elizabeth H. Callahan, 80, of 19 Conway St., died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. Her husband, Robert L., died Feb. 20, 1993. She was retired from Carlton Nursing Home, Wellsboro. Born Dec. 19, 1919, in Arnot, she was a daughter of Horace O. and Annis M. Fair Redner Holcomb. Surviving are two sons, Robert L. Jr. and Rande J.; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Callahan ; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Elizabeth Taynton, and a son, James. A private graveside service will be held with the Rev. Peter DeVantier officiating. Burial will be in Tioga County Memorial Gardens. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., Wellsboro.

Howard Condo
LOCK HAVEN - Howard Condo, 74, of this borough, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, in Lock Haven Hospital. He and his wife, the former Eleanor Heller, observed their 53rd wedding anniversary June 29. He worked at the I.G.A. market and at the Hammermill plant. He was a graduate of Lock Haven High School. He was a social member of the Castanea Fire Company. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Born in Loganton, he was a son of John Howard and Mary Brunner Condo. Surviving, besides his wife and mother, are a son, Jerry; a daughter Bonnie Russo; three brothers, Marsden “Mart” and Donald and Richard of Mill Hall; two sisters, Elizabeth Heichel and Judie Dunkle; four grandchildren, Angela Mansfield, Brian, Erica, and Wendy Condo; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Kline’s, 232 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall, with the Rev. Wayne Hixon officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Hazel K. Entz
Services will be at the convenience of the family for Hazel K. Entz, 97, formerly of Montoursville, who died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at Winston-Salem, N.C. Her husband, Benjamin F. Entz, died in 1979. She retired from Becht Elementary School in 1968 and had taught in several of Lycoming County’s one-room schools. Born Feb. 27, 1903, in Mill Creek Township, she was a daughter of Edward G. and Katie C. Kleese. Surviving are a daughter, Carol E. Strittmatter of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a granddaughter, Clare S. Salkin; a great-granddaughter, Brenna Salkin. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eva K. Holcomb. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery.

Blanche I. Fritz
LOCK HAVEN - Blanche Irvin Fritz, 99, of Susque View Nursing Home, formerly of Avis, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Lock Haven Hospital. Her husband, Clair Evan, died Feb. 17, 1984. A homemaker, she was employed earlier in life at Woolrich Woolen Mills. She had been a member of Avis United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of Lock Haven Normal School. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Albany, N.Y. Born April 28, 1901, she was a daughter of John and Henrietta Millard Irvin. Surviving are a son, Clair M. of Avis; a daughter, June E. Andrew of McElhattan; a brother, Raymond Irvin of Flemington; a sister, Laura A. Swart of Lock Haven; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-greatgrandson. She was preceded in death by three brothers, four sisters and one grandson. The memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Yost-Gedon’s, 121 W. Main St., Lock Haven, with James M. Burnworth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating. Burial will be in Linnwood Cemetery, McElhattan. There will be no visitation.

Catherine M. Kessinger
BEECH CREEK - Catherine Marie Keefer Kessinger, 69, of Main St., died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at home. She and her husband, William, observed their 51st wedding anniversary June 25. Retiring in 1989, she was a co-owner of Kessinger Appliance and Gas Co. and a partner in Keswin Inc. Land Development. Catherine Avenue in Beech Creek was named in her honor. She was a 1949 graduate of Lock Haven High School. She was a member of Bald Eagle Presbyterian Church, Mill Hall. She was a 50-year member of Beech Creek American Legion 623 Auxiliary. Born March 14, 1931, in Lock Haven, she was a daughter of Lucy Milner Keefer. Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, William T. of Beech Creek and Mark P. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three daughters, Siri Annegan of Erie, Debra Paras of Allentown and Audrey Weaver of Beech Creek; two brothers, Richard Keefer of Sparks, Nev. and Lewis Keefer of Salt Lake City, Utah; four sisters, Grace Yearick of Mill Hall, Loretta Swisher and Simona Harner, both of Milburn, Okla., and Ruth Kilborn of Coleman, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Also surviving is Julie Taggart Fisher of Melbourne, Australia. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Keefer. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Helt, Hanna, Kline’s, 232 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall, with the Rev. Craig Bustrin officiating. Burial will be in Hayes-Fearon Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Gladys A. Kime, 78, of 2163 Mosser Ave., died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at home. Her husband, Anthony J., died Aug. 19, 1989. She worked at Sylvania, Montoursville, for 18 years. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church. She was a 1940 graduate of Williamsport High School. She was a member of Newberry Senior Citizens. Born Sept. 24, 1922 in this city, she was a daughter of William B. and Catherine M. Armes Colley. Surviving are one son, Robert of Linden; two daughters, JoAnn Heffner of Millsboro, Del. and Bonnie Reynolds of this city; two brothers, Paul L. Colley of Linden and Carl W. Colley of this city; four sisters, Lucille M. Rolley and Blanche N. Wash, both of this city, Martha J. Rolley of Cogan Station, and Dorothy M. Trimble of Montoursville; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Eugene Kime; three brothers, Kenneth, Richard and Donald; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Sanders’, 821 Diamond St., with Pastor Ronald D. Savits officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Montgomery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The family will provide the flowers.
