Lafayette Lockwood, 87, of 1154 Isabella St., died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Williamsport Hospital. He and his wife, the former Norma Borowiec, observed their 35th wedding anniversary Oct. 30. He was a sewing machine mechanic for various local sewing operations. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Newberry. He was a graduate of Williamsport High School. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Born Oct. 10, 1913, in Emporium, he was a son of Randolph and Lillian Lockwood. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Mickey Charles of Stockbridge, Ga.; three daughters, Jackie A. Gann of Rex, Ga., Judy Kinney and Cathy McGhean; and a grandson. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St., with the Rev. Kraig Faust officiating. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery. Theodore J. Strein
Theodore J. Strein, 72, of 701 Mulberry St., Montoursville, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at home. He and his wife, the former Donna E. Cleveland, observed their 49th wedding anniversary March 4. He retired in 1985, as a teacher and head of the mathematics department at Williamsport High School. He previously taught and coached at Montoursville High School. He was a graduate of Mansfield State Teachers College, University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. He served on Montoursville Borough Council and helped establish the Montoursville Community Pool as a founding member of the recreation board. He also helped start the Montoursville Pop Warner Football. He was a member of Montoursville Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Friendship Lodge 247 F&AM, Mansfield, Williamsport Consistory, the Turbot Hills Golf Club, Milton and was a Life Master of Williamsport Bridge Club. A Marine veteran of World War II he was a member of Eugene Grafius Post 104 American Legion, Montoursville. Born June 12, 1928, in Scranton, he was a son of Willard and Irene Bigart Strein. Surviving, besides his wife, are three sons, John W. of Owossa, Mich., Richard W. of Lexington, Ky., and Timothy G. of Milton; a daughter, Laura L. Bower of Montoursville; a brother, Willis of Whitehall; and 10 grandchildren. A Masonic service and memorial service will begin at 7 p.m. Monday at the church, 900 Elm St., Montoursville, with the Rev. G. Oliver Wagner officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville.
George L. VanDine
HUGHESVILLE - George L. VanDine, 90, of 170 S. Main St., formerly of Unityville, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Williamsport Hospital. He and his wife, the former Evalene E. Houseknecht, observed their 65th wedding anniversary July 25. Retiring in 1976, he was an assemblyman at the former Sprout-Waldron Company, Muncy, and previously worked road construction. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. He farmed in Jordan Township, where he was also a former school director, township assessor and charter member of the Unityville Volunteer Fire Company. He was a member of the Lycoming County Agricultural Association and the Holstein-Friesian Association. He was a member of Moose Lodge 866, Muncy, Muncy Blue Lodge 299 F&AM, Williamsport Consistory, Zafar Grotto, South Williamsport, and the Warrior Run Royal Arch Chapter 246. He was a charter member of Consolidated Sportsman of Muncy Creek, Creekside Rod and Gun Club, and the Hughesville Senior Citizens. Born Oct. 20, 1910, in Unityville, he was a son of Thomas D. and Hannah M. Gardner VanDine. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Ronald R. of Elmira, N.Y., and Lynn L. of Clarkstown; a daughter, Shirley A. Rohe of Foster City, Calif.; three sisters, Laura G. Merrell, Alice Michael of Sunbury and Rena Robbins of Unityville; and a grandson. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl L. Hoffman and Alberta Simmons. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at McCarty-Thomas’, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with the Rev. George E. Doran officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hughesville. Rose M. Barletta, 92, of Outlook Point Assisted Living Center, formerly of Maple Ave., died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Valley View Nursing Center. Her husband, August Barletta, died Oct. 12, 1983. She retired from the former Curtin High School Cafeteria and worked at the former U.S. Rubber Co. She was a member of Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church. Born Nov. 26, 1908, in Julianello, Italy, she was a daughter of John and Penelope DiMichele. Surviving are two sons, John R. of Chesterfield, Mich., and A. Lawrence of South Williamsport; a daughter, Joanne Neiderer of Silver Spring, Md.; a brother, Paul DiMichele of Montoursville; a sister, Philomena Masters of this city; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary F. Stopper. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the church, 635 Hepburn St., with the Rev. Michael McCormick officiating. HUGHESVILLE - Sandra J. Pennycoff-Walters-Bower, 57, 101 Boak Ave., died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at home. Her husband, Walter H. Bower, died in 1991. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, South Williamsport. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of Bower-Decker Post 251, American Legion, Montgomery, and Edward J. Smith Post 3428, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Muncy. She was a coach for girl’s softball for many years, and enjoyed bowling, playing pool, fishing and boating. Born April 12, 1943, in Forest Hill, she was a daughter of Albert C. and Alberta E. Bridge Pennycoff. Surviving, besides her mother of Linden, are two sons, William E. Walters of Grantsville, Md., and Robert K. Walters of Williamsport; three daughters, Karen L. Ward of Avis, Kimberly S. Walters-Santos of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Kelly J. Eckman of Williamsport; a brother, Albert C. Pennycoff Jr., Cogan Station; a sister, Delores McGuire of Jacobus; and 10 grandchildren. Also surviving is a companion, Donald C. Smith of Hughesville. She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold W.L. Pennycoff. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the McCarty-Thomas’, 557 E. Water St., with the Rev R. Edward Coup, her pastor, officiating. MIDDLEBURY CENTER - Susie K. Freeman, 82, of Middlebury Center RR 2, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at home. Her husband, Ivan A. “Mike” Freeman, died in 1992. She was a homemaker and enjoyed crossword puzzles. Born Sept. 1, 1918, at Roseville, she was a daughter of Olin J. and Alma B. Benson Gee. Surviving are three daughters, Patricia Hackman of Ulysses, Iva “Tillie” Townsend of Tioga and Joanne Hunter Preble of Wellsboro; a brother Henry Gee of Wellsboro; 37 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. ELKLAND - E. Francis Hall, 82, of Wormleysburg and a former area resident, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, in Holy Spirit Hospital, Harrisburg. He retired as a sales manager from the former IDS Financial Advisors and was a past president of the IDS Summit Club. He was a former Wormleysburg borough councilman. He was a member and elder of Camp Hill Presbyterian Church. He was a member and past master of Lodge 421, F&AM, here, and a member of Royal Arch Chapter 21; the Harrisburg Consistory and the Zembo Shrine. He also was a member of the West Shore Country Club, Camp Hill. Surviving are his wife, Helen R. Hall; a daughter, Linda Blacksmith of Indiana, Pa.; a son, Ned of Brookhaven; a sister, Evelyn Hornsby of Fairborn, Ohio; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the church in Camp Hill. Burial will be Tuesday in Fairview Cemetery, Osceola. Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday. Margaret M. Humphrey
Margaret M. Humphrey, 88, of Roseview Court, formerly of Cleveland, Ohio, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in Roseview Court. Her husband, Jack Humphrey, died in 1973. She was a registered nurse and a former employee of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Lewis Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio. She moved here in 1977. Born May 7, 1912, in Cleveland, she was a daughter of Walter and Margaret Maxim. Surviving are a son, John M. of this city; a daughter, Connie Latimer of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 24 at Roseview Court. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation. Warren D. Nash
MAINESBURG - Warren D. Nash, 78, a borough resident, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at home. His wife of 57 years, the former Velma Benson, died in December. He was a retired farmer and carpenter. Born Aug. 17, 1922, in Troy, he was a son of Seward and Ada Covert Nash. Surviving are two sons, Eldon of Mainesburg and Garth of Troy; and a grandson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Josephine Brown. The funeral will be at 3 p.m.Tuesday at the Wilston’s, 18 N. Main St., Mansfield, with the Rev. Badon Brown officiating. Thomas W. O’Neil
Thomas W. O’Neil, 87, of 1000 Tule St., Montoursville, died Jan. 11, 2001, in Sycamore Nursing Home. He and his wife, the former Esta E. Huss, observed their 50th anniversary on June 23. He retired in 1975 from the former Avco Lycoming. He an Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Appalachian Mountain Hiking Club and hiked the entire Appalachian Trail. He received an award for climbing the 46 peaks over 4,000 feet in elevation in New England. A member of the Friends of Mineralology of Pennsylvania, he was published in numerous geology publications. Born April 23, 1913, in Lock Haven, he was a son of Roland P. and Grace Wagner O’Neil. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Kathleen E. O’Neil of Colorado Springs, Colo., and two granddaughters, Jessica and Megan O’Neil. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with the Rev. J. Jeffery Zetto officiating. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery. Thomas F. Redmond Jr.
Thomas F. Redmond Jr., of 1196 Vallamont Drive, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001. He was a local funeral director for 50 years. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation where he served as usher. He was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association and the Greater Williamsport Funeral Directors Association. He was life member of the Central Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Williamsport Country Club, the Williamsport Elks and Moose lodges and the Wheel Inn, Roaring Branch. He was a graduate of the former St. Joseph’s High School here and attended Villanova University. Born here, he was the son of Thomas F. Sr. and Mabel Dougherty Redmond. Surviving are his wife, the former Annabelle Reidy; three daughters, Susan Redmond of Syracuse, N.Y., Elizabeth Redmond of Bal Harbour, Fla., and Ellen Storms of Macungie; two sons, Thomas F. III of Cherry Hill, N.J., and Patrick of Montoursville; and nine grandchildren. The funeral and burial will be at the convenience of the family. Jack Thomas Scarborough, 64, of 1176 Mosquito Valley Road, DuBoistown, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at home. He and his wife, the former Virginia Landon, were married 43 years last June 28. He retired in 1998 after 37 years employment at Lonza Inc. He attended Williamsport Assembly of God Church. He was a Navy veteran. He enjoyed hunting, gardening and woodworking. Born Jan. 24, 1936, at Caldwell, he was a son of Jack L. and Susan E. Graybill Scarborough. Surviving, besides wife and his mother, Susan E. Brown, of Cogan Station, are two sons, Tim of South Williamsport and Todd of DuBoistown; a daughter, Rhonda Scarborough of South Williamsport; two foster sons, James Hurst of Miami, Fla., and Russell Brought, of Karthaus; a brother, Mark in Kenya, Africa; six sisters, Pearl Fox, Sally Walizer and Doris Bauer, all of Cogan Station, Jean Probst of Trout Run, Clara Baker of Nesbit and Janet Cash in Florida; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. LEWISBURG - Helen Jane Stees, 88, of 211 Fairground Road, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, in Evangelical Community Hospital. Her husband, William L. Stees, died July 11, 1996. She had worked for Huntingdon Throwing Mills and Sterling Bros. Throwing Mills, Mifflinburg; Laurelton Center, Millmont, and Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. During retirement, she was an original foster grandmother at the Laurelton State School and Hospital. She was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mifflinburg. She was charter member of the ladies auxiliary of the Mifflinburg Hose Co. No. 1, and the firemen’s parade marching unit. She was a charter member of the Women of the Moose, Lodge 1279, Mifflinburg, and a member of the Ramblers Club. Born May 20, 1912, in Buffalo Township, Union County, she was a daughter of Edward and Dora Beachel Diefenbach. Surviving are a son, Richard C. of Mifflinburg; a daughter, Janet E. Wagner of Ocala, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth W., on Jan. 1, 1998; a brother, Elwood, and a sister, Florence. AUSTIN - Linnea M. Vroman, 85, a village resident, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, in Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport. Her husband, Lloyd A. Vroman, died in 1993. She formerly owned Vroman’s Restaurant and Tavern, Costello. She was a member of Morris United Methodist Church. She enjoyed quilting and gardening. Born Aug. 27, 1915, at Gafney, she was a daughter of Seth and Eva Barber Williams. Surviving are a son, William L. of Culpepper, Va.; a sister, Inez Traszowicz of Wellsboro; seven grandchildren and three great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Roberta A. Maynard M. Homler, Sr., 66, of 81 Union Ave. died Sunday Jan. 14, 2001, in the Williamsport Hospital emergency room. He and his wife, the former Margaret M. Truax, observed their 47th wedding anniversary on Sept. 16. He retired in 1996 from the Met-Fab Co. He enjoyed gardening and fishing. Born Feb. 9, 1934, in Jersey Shore, he was a son of John and Julia Porter Homler. Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Margaret M. Homler, this city, and Marguerite M. Wolfgang of Allenwood; two sons, Maynard M. Jr. and Mark M., both of this city; a brother, George Guthrie, of this city; a sister, Virginia P.
