John M. Lynch
CANTON – John M. Lynch, 78, of East Union St. died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in Hershey Medical Center, Hershey. He and his wife, the former Mary Ewing, observed their 49th wedding anniversary this past October. He retired from Swayze’s Folding Box Co. as Production Manager in 1988. He was a member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Lodge 429, Loyal Order of the Moose, and Post 714, Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of this borough. He was a member of the Corey Creek Country Club, Mansfield, where he enjoyed golfing. He served on and was past president of the Canton School Board. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Clorinda Lynch of New York and Betsy Lynch of this borough; three sons, Mark of Wilmington, N.C., Robert of Westminster, Md., and Michael of Casselberry, Fla.; a brother, James M. Lynch of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Joan Talmage of Seabrook, S.C.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Lanahan and Helen Herman. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, in the church. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery, with full military honors accorded. Friends may call at Pepper’s, Springbrook Drive, 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Prayer services will be 7:30 p.m Tuesday and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

David Lee Ross
David Lee Ross, 43, of Louisa Street died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in Williamsport Hospital. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1. Surviving is a mother, Dorothy Ross of Cogan Station; a brother, Donald Ross of Salladasburg; and two stepsisters, Joyce Kocher of Mansfield and Rayna Henry of Wisconsin. A Memorial service and burial will be private.

Benjamin F. Scarborough
Benjamin F. Scarborough, 81, of 325 Bennett St., Montoursville, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in the Muncy Valley Hospital skilled nursing unit. He and his wife, the former Donna M. Farley, observed their 43rd anniversary Oct. 5. In 1981, he retired from Bethlehem Steel. He was currently employed at Value City in the Lycoming Mall. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He was a star football and basketball player for Williamsport High School in 1937 and was an avid bowler. Born September 30, 1919, he was a son to Pearl Sechler Scarborough. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Jody M. Unis of Allentown; a son, Brad F. of State College; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. The family will provide the flowers.

Daniel J. Washleski
Daniel J. “Bucky” Washleski, 66, of 1041 W. Walnut St., Coal Township, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in the Shamokin Community Hospital emergency room. He was the father of a local woman. He and his wife, the former Carmella Cynthia Volanoski, observed their 38th wedding anniversary in May. He retired from Elbeco, Frackville, as a supervisor. He previously was employed by the Arrow Shirt Co. for 33 years until it ceased operations. He was a member of Saint Stanislaus Church, now Mother Cabrini Church, Shamokin. He was a member of Moose and Elks lodges in the Shamokin area. He was a member of Three Ponds Golf Course, Elysburg, for 25 years. Born March 8, 1931, he was a son of Joseph and Mary Radziewiez Wasielewski. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Deborah Lax of Montoursville; a son, Daniel Washleski of Sinking Spring; a sister, Eleanor Kaskie of Shamokin; and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph,on Nov. 1. Friends may call at Lucas’, 120 South Market St., Shamokin, from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 8:30 to 9:15 Thursday. The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Jack M. Callahan
JERSEY SHORE - Jack M. Callahan, 80, of 351 Glover St. died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in Williamsport Hospital. He and his wife, the former Hannah C. Keefer, had been married over 60 years. He was employed by Bethlehem Wire Rope Co. for over 39 years. Earlier in life he worked at Danville State Nursing School. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a 1937 graduate of Jersey Shore High School and a 1942 graduate of Danville State Nursing School. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and all sporting activities. Born May 13, 1920, in this borough, he was a son of Jesse F. and Mina M. Meckly Callahan. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Fredrick N. of Williamsport; two daughters, Virginia L Engel of Williamsport and Christine D. Barger of this borough; two sisters, Inabelle Swope of Linden and Peanut Kymble of this borough; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, corner of Maple and Walnut streets, with the Rev. Anke Deibler officiating. Burial will be in Jersey Shore Cemetery. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Rearick-Carpenter’s, 1002 Allegheny St.

Bret J. Keefe,
Vehicle Accident Victim
Bret James Keefe, 37, of Wyalusing, stepbrother of a city woman, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, in Lycoming County as the result of an automobile accident. He and his wife, the former Melissa Miller, observed their 13th wedding anniversary Oct. 17. He was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation as a construction supervisor for the district and previously was a highway construction engineer. He was a 1981 graduate of Wyalusing High School, a 1983 graduate of Keystone Junior College and a 1986 graduate of Penn State University, Harrisburg campus, with an Engineering degree. He was a coach for the Wyalusing Area Youth Soccer League, an assistant head coach for the Wyalusing Area High School Wrestling, and helped coach the Wyalusing Junior High Football. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, sporting activities and was an avid golfer. Born June 20, 1963, in Towanda, he was a son of Edward James and Judith Bouse Keefe Looney. Surviving, besides his wife, are his father and stepmother, Dianne of New Albany; his mother and stepfather, William Looney of New Castle; three daughters, Alyssa, Brianna and Alexis, all at home; two brothers, Brian of Danielsville and Kevin of Duncannon; two stepbrothers, Tim Shults of LeRoy and Cassidy Shults of New Albany; three stepsisters, Michelle Ross of LeRoy, Ann Bryan of Canton and Janice Baumer of this city; grandmothers Lola Bouse of New Albany and Rosamond Keefe of Towanda; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, George Bouse and James F. and Leah Keefe. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. today in St. Mary’s of the Assumption Catholic Church, Wyalusing, with Father Kenneth Seeger officiating. Burial will be in Lime Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by McHenry’s, 106 Church St., Wyalusing.

Adrian J. Bronson
MIDDLEBURY CENTER - Adrian J. Bronson, 75, of this borough died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. He and his wife, the former Alberta Rice, observed their 53rd wedding anniversary Dec. 6. He retired from Corning, Inc., Corning, N.Y., after 50 years. He was a 1942 graduate of Covington School. He was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 429, Canton, and Dads of Foreign Service Veterans, Mansfield. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the Air Force Reserve. Born May 15, 1925, in Lindley, N.Y., he was a son of Willard and Maybelle Whitmore Bronson. Surviving, besides his wife, are three sons, James of Mansfield, Ronald of Elkland and Kevin in North Carolina; five daughters, Sharlene Clark of Lindley, N.Y., Carol Heath, Deb Miller, Barb Nichols, and Karen Bartholomew, all of Wellsboro; a brother, Dwight Bronson of Wellsboro; two sisters, Katy English of Wellsboro and Pauline Clark of Milton; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Corabelle Frost, in 1997. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., Wellsboro, with the Rev. Theodore Brennan, his cousin, officiating. Burial will be in Tioga County Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Richard G. Rogers
LOGANTON - Richard G. Rogers, 70, of this borough, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at home. Retired from the Air Force, he had served in Vietnam. He attended Walker Township School. He was a life member of Post 5859,Veterans of Foreign Wars, Jersey Shore, where he was past district commander; a member of the post color guard and president of the VFW Corporation. He was past district commander of Americanism for District 15 and past commander for District 15. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, West Branch 116; Sugar Valley Social Club and Southern Clinton County Sportsmen Club. Born June 1, 1930, in Nittany Valley, he was a son of Thomas and Annbella Showers Rogers. Surviving are four brothers, Clyde of Tylersville, Guy of Jersey Shore, Charles of Hughesville, and Elwood of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Ella Quiggle of Sanford, Fla.; a half brother, Clair Jones of Centre Hall; and a half sister, Hazel Duck of Tylersville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernadette. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Union Cemetery, Tylersville, with the Rev. Eric Deibler officiating, to be followed by military honors by VFW Post 5859. Friends may call at Welker’s, 95 E. Main St., from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Ova H. Bartlett
MONTGOMERY - Ova H. Bartlett, 86, formerly of 8860 Route 405 Highway, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in the Muncy Valley Hospital skilled nursing unit, where she was a resident. She and her husband, Luther “Joe” Bartlett observed their 66th wedding anniversary Aug. 18. She was retired from the former J.C. Decker Manufacturing Co., Montgomery. She was a member of St. John Lutheran “Brick” Church. Born Sept. 3, 1914, in Berwick, she was a daughter of Willard and Irene Bitler Hess. Surviving, besides her husband, are a son, Anthony J. of St. Marys; two sisters, Virtie Ankus of Berwick and Queen Keene of Linnwood; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Toot Mowery and Grace Kulp. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the church, Route 405, with the Rev. George E. Doran, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hughesville, officiating. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery RR 2. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Wallis-Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy.

Miles R. Miller Jr.
DUSHORE - Miles R. Miller Jr., 79, of this borough died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at home following an extended illness. He and his wife, the former Lorraine Tilley, observed their 53rd wedding anniversary Oct. 11. He retired in 1980 from heavy construction work. Earlier, he was a logger and farmer. He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Zion Chapel. Born Dec. 4, 1921, in Athens, he was a son of Miles R. and Florence Hunsinger Miller Sr. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Kenneth of Dushore RR; two daughters, Linda Ann Hicks of Myerstown and Tammy Sue Miller of Owing Mills, Md.; and two grandchildren, Nicholas A. and Anastasia M. Miller. He was preceded in death by an infant son in 1948. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the church, Dushore, with the Rev. Dr. Eddie A. Nilsen officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Cherry Grove Cemetery, Nordmont. Arrangements are being handled by McHenry’s, 119 Carpenter St.

Charles Featherstone Sr.
Charles C. Featherstone Sr., 89, of 489 Winthrop St., South Williamsport, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, in Williamsport Hospital. His wife, the former Kathleen G. Schmidt died April 8, 1987. Retiring in 1973, he was employed for 30 years as a machinist with GTE Sylvania. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church. Born June 19, 1911, in this city, he was a son of Earnest and Lillian Finkler Featherstone. Surviving are a son, Charles C. Jr. of Cogan Station; a daughter, Donna K. Breidinger of Elverson; a sister, Edith O’Day of this city; and two grandsons, Matthew and Mark Featherstone. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and Harry Featherstone and three sisters, Jeannie Featherstone, Caroline Talbot and Ruth Snyder. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Christ Episcopal Church, Fourth and Mulberry streets, with the Rev. Lynn Sinnott officiating. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery. Friends may call in the church from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesday. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Noll’s, 1 E. Central Ave., South Williamsport.

M. Theodore Neece
M. Theodore Neece, 70, of 3844 State Route 973, Cogan Station, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at home. His wife, Ann L. Neece, died Dec. 24, 1998. Retiring in 1991, he was a builder for 40 years. He was a member of Central Baptist Church, where he was involved in many organizations. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 106, F&AM, and the Williamsport Consistory. Born Jan. 1, 1931, in Elmira, N.Y., he was a son of James and Dorothy Hess Neece. Surviving are two sons, T. Lynn of Gig Harbor, Wash., and M. Tymn of Elizabethtown; three daughters, Robyn Bauder and Fawn Davies, both of Elizabethtown and Gayle Merkt of Eliza; a brother, Ron Neece of Gillett, a sister, June Quinn of Ontario, Canada; and nine grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church, 601 Seventh Ave., with the Rev. Roy W. Johnsen officiating. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Montgomery RR 2. Friends may call in the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St.

Shirley P. Freedman
The service was Thursday for Shirley P. Freedman, 73, of Lemoyne, formerly of this city, who died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, in Camp Hill. She was a 1945 graduate of Williamsport High School. Born Aug. 28, 1927, in this city, she was a daughter of Harry and Frieda Sherman Spector. Surviving are her husband, Dr. Donald Freedman of Lemoyne; three sons, Harry Garner of Harrisburg, Dr. Richard of Charlottsville, Va., and Dr. Samuel of Portland, Ore.; three daughters, Ellen Garner Venier and Hara Freedman, both of Harrisburg and Risa D. Long of Newton, Mass.; a brother, Morton Spector of Harrisburg; and nine grandchildren. A service was held in Beth El Temple, Harrisburg. Burial was in Beth El Cemetery.

Daniel L. Bartlow
MILTON - Daniel L. Bartlow, 51, of Boyer Road died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at home. He was employed for the past seven years by Heinz Pet Products, Bloomsburg. He attended Montgomery High School. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam war, having received the purple heart; national defense service medal; Vietnam service medal with two bronze stars; Republic of Vietnam campaign medal; combat infantryman badge; and sharpshooter medal. Born Nov. 6, 1949, in Muncy, he was a son of Walter L. and Arlene L. Millheim Bartlow. Surviving are his mother of Muncy; a daughter, Melissa A. Bartlow of Mifflinburg; a stepson, Jeremy Harmon; five sisters, Nancy C. Newman and Velvet E. Bartlow, both of Hughesville and Norma J. Egli, Vicki J. Campbell, and Dena K. White, all of Muncy. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in St. John Lutheran “Brick” Church Cemetery, Route 405, Montgomery, with the Rev. D. Gene Patterson, Muncy Baptist Church officiating. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Wallis-Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy.
