Madeline B. Riday, 89, of Southampton, a city native and former Renovo resident, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at Southampton Estates Medical Care Facility. She was the widow of Raymond S. Riday. Retiring in 1974, she was an accounting supervisor for 19 years for Breyer Sealtest factory. She attended Renovo Public Schools and Potts Business School here. Born Feb. 10, 1911, she was a daughter of Charles and Mary Elizabeth Lins Billman. There are no survivors. Private burial will be in North Bend Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Maxwell’s, 205 Fifth St., Renovo.

Theressa C. Welker
LOCK HAVEN - Theressa C. Welker, 85, formerly of Irwin Street died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Susque-View Nursing Home. Her husband, Delbert G. Welker, died in August 1968. She worked for Sylvania, Mill Hall, and B&K Market and JR’s Foodette, both in Lock Haven. She was a member of United Evangelical Lutheran Church. Born Oct. 16, 1915, in Tyrone, she was a daughter of Bray and Edna Gingery Yost. Surviving are a brother, Jerome Yost of Lock Haven; and two sisters, Josephine Barnhart of Lock Haven and Lena Welsh of Flemington. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Forrest Yost, and a sister, Hazel Waterman-Motter. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Helt Hanna Kline’s, 232 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall, with the Rev. Marilyn Haseman officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Calvin F. Vance
LOCK HAVEN - Calvin F. Vance, 77, a resident of the Lock Haven Extended Care Unit, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001. He retired after 20 years as a furnace technician for William J. Ingram Oil Co. He was a member of the Walker Township Fire Co. He was a member of the American Legion, Moose Club and the Sons of Italy here. He enjoyed hunting. Born May 15, 1923, in Eastville, he was a son of Samuel William and Margaret Elizabeth Brunner Vance. Surviving are two sons, Robert T. of Centre Hall and Samuel C. of Lock Haven; a daughter, Margaret A. of Lock Haven; a sister, Arlene Patterson of Lock Haven; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Lee E.; two brothers, Robert and Glenn; and three sisters, Grace Smith, Mary Neff and Patricia Manwiller. Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Eastville Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Helt Hanna Kline’s, 232 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall.

J. Howard Hill
HUGHESVILLE - J. Howard Hill, 87, of 42 Bank Farm Road died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Williamsport Hospital Emergency Room. He and his wife, the former Hazel Fry Springman, observed their 42nd wedding anniversary Sept. 6. He retired from the former Modecraft, Muncy, and was employed at the former Anton Waldman Co. Born here July 19, 1913, he was a son of John Monroe and Ida Lenore Carter Hill. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Clarabelle Springman Williams of Montoursville; a sister, Gwendolyn H. Miller of Harrisburg; and a grandson, Dana Williams. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Roland, Raymond, Lyle, and James, and two sisters, Gertrude Hall and Hannah. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at McCarty-Thomas’, 557 E. Water St., with the Rev. Bethany Wood, pastor of Bethany United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Gisela E. Vawryk
LOCK HAVEN - Gisela E. Vawryk, 65, of West Water Street, formerly of Stevensville, Md., died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Lock Haven Hospital. Her husband, Nicholas Vawryk, died Dec. 15, 1997. She was a designer of clothing in Germany and a member of Flemington United Methodist Church. Born March 7, 1935, in Berlin, Germany, she was a daughter of Erich and Ida Kleinschmidt. Surviving, besides her mother, are a daughter, Nadja Vawryk Button of Lock Haven; and a granddaughter, Ashley M. Dowgwillo. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Helt Hanna Kline’s, 232 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

Ethel S. C. Olson
GALETON - Ethel S. C. Olson, 83, of this borough, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at home. Born here June 22, 1917, she was a daughter of Andrew N. and Ellen Nordquist Olson. She was a 1935 graduate of Galeton High School and a 1939 graduate of Robert Packer School of Nursing. Retiring in 1980, she was a state public health nurse in Potter County. Earlier in life, she was employed by Drs. Herman and George Mosch, Coudersport, and was a private-duty nurse. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6611, Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees, Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, former Galeton American Legion, and the former Order of the Eastern Star 53. She was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre. Surviving are a brother, Walter of Bartlett, Tenn.; and a niece and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, John A., in 1999. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Joseph A. Wolf Jr., assisted by Vicar Diana Britten, officiating. Burial will be in West Hill Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by the Potter County Honor Guard. Friends may call at Collins-Olney’s from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Violet M. Harris
Violet M. Harris, 88, formerly of 344 Percy St., South Williamsport, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Manor Care North. Her husband, William L. Harris, died Dec. 5, 1984. She was retired from the former Williamsport Milk Products Co., also known as Hurr’s Dairy. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. She was a 1930 graduate of South Williamsport High School and attended the former Potts Business School. She was a member of South Williamsport Senior Citizens and American Association of Retired Persons. Born May 25, 1912, in this city, she was a daughter of Fred J. and Anna Stark Hamm. Surviving are a son, William F. of Morganton, N.C.; two daughters, Carol A. Waltz and Nancy J. Porter, both of South Williamsport; a sister, Mildred H. Buss of Harrisburg; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church, 324 S. Howard St., South Williamsport, with the Rev. Robert L. Driesen officiating. Burial will be in Montoursville Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday. The family will provide the flowers. Arrangements are being handled by Noll’s, 1 E. Central Ave., South Williamsport.

Clara V. Hipple
TROUT RUN - Clara V. Hipple, 87, of 2299 Southard Road died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at the home of a daughter. Her husband, Allen W. Hipple, died March 10. She was a member of Hoffman United Methodist Church, where she formerly played piano. Born Feb. 16, 1913, in Trout Run, she was a daughter of Harrie and Minnie Burtnett Jones. Surviving are a son, H. Lewis of Aurora, Colo.; five daughters, Laura E. Michael, Minnie R. Wheeland, Betty L. Bonazzi, all of Trout Run, Elsie A. Reeder of Warrensville, and Viola J. Mosteller of Montoursville; 22 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Duane; four brothers, Albert, Edgar, George and John Jones; a sister, Edith Hildebrand; a grandson, Ricky Wheeland; and a great-grandson, Lewis L. Wheeler IV. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church, Wallis Run Road, Trout Run, with the Rev. Albert E. Cox officiating. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Eldred Township. Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday. Arrangements are being handled by Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville.

Marvin C. Erdly
LOCK HAVEN - Marvin C. Erdly, 79, of 734 E. Main St. died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Susque View Home. He and his wife, the former Doris M. Mitchell, observed their 60th wedding anniversary Dec. 7. He worked at the former Piper Aircraft Co. for nearly 30 years and had been employed by the railroad in Renovo. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, receiving the Pacific Theater Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Born Jan. 26, 1921, in Lewis Township, he was a son of Charles N. and Grace M. Confer Erdly. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, James A. of Bryan’s Road, Md.; two daughters, Sylvia J. Brooks of Dover and Kathy M. Royer of Pennsylvania Furnace; a sister, Doris E. Rote of Sunbury; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray N. in 1974, and Charles L. “Buck” in 1991, and a sister, Ada Pursell in 1955. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Brooks’, 207 Broadway St., Turbotville, with the Rev. Susan D’heedene, pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ, Turbotville, officiating. Burial will be in Turbotville Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Lillian E. Heffner,

TIOGA - Lillian E. Heffner, 85, of this borough, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. Her husband of 51 years, Benjamin Heffner, died in 1986. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Lawrenceville. Born Oct. 15, 1915, in Lawrence Township, she was a daughter of Raymond and Lydia Bump Dates. Surviving are three sons, Durwood of Coopers Plains, N.Y., Stephen of Elkland, and Kevin Croft of Lawrenceville; eight daughters, Joanne Losinger of Wellsboro, Marilyn Smith, Hazel Morse and Mary Steffen, all of Lawrenceville, Janice Bliss, Lydia Stone and Jennifer Atkinson, all of Tioga, and Patricia VanOrder of Nelson; a brother, Richard Dates of Bath, N.Y.; a sister Margaret Heffner of Lawrenceville; 43 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by three sons, Phillip in 1961, Franklin in 1978 and Nolan in 1993; and two grandsons, Mark Stone in 1975 and George Losinger in 1984. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Wilston’s, 18 N. Main St., Mansfield, with the Revs. Gary Weaver and William Lusk officiating. Burial will be in Nelson Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

E. Lorraine Ackerman
E. Lorraine Ackerman, 79, of First Avenue died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Roseview Center. Her husband, Edgar L. Ackerman, died Aug. 23. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Church of the Savior, Lutheran. She was a member of Women of E.L.C.A., taught adult Sunday school, and was former head of the Alter Guild and the Adult Education Committee. Born here Nov. 30, 1921, she was a daughter of William and Ethel Babcock Cardene. Surviving are two sons, Bruce R. of Jacksonville, Fla., and James F. of this city; a daughter, Nancy J. of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Conrad “Turk” Cardene of Montoursville and Paul Cardene of this city; a sister, Arlene Bowers of Jersey Shore; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Cardene. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church, Grier Street and Memorial Avenue, with the Rev. Harlan Frank Showers officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call at Allen & Redmond’s, 331 Elmira St., from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and at the church from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday. Eugene H. Kephart,

ENGLISH CENTER - Eugene “Gene” H. Kephart, 55, of this borough died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at home. His wife, Nancy L. Teed, died Aug. 14, 1999. He retired as an equipment operator after 30 years with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. He was a Pine Township Supervisor. He was a 32nd-degree Mason and a member of the Jersey Shore Moose lodge. He was a graduate of Wellsboro High School. Born May 14, 1945, in Jersey Shore, he was a son of Ray and Euphemia Heggenstaller Kephart. Surviving are a daughter, Dawn Marie Wolfgang of Brookside; a stepdaughter, Kathleen Austin of Frederica, Del.; two sisters, Helen Levin of Ft. Mohave, Ariz., and Vera Saar of Jersey Shore; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond “Butch” Kephart. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Tussey-Mosher’s, 139 Main St., Wellsboro, with Pastor Don Fornwalt officiating. Burial will be in Oregon Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Daniel L. Fazler
Daniel L. Fazler, 90, of Greensburg, a Montoursville native, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Westmoreland Regional Hospital. He was retired from the former Avco Corp. Born Aug. 28, 1910, he was a son of Karl J. and Elizabeth Ertel Fazler. Survivors include a son, Karl D. of Linden; a daughter, Karen L. Plankenhorn of Greensburg; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, the former Leona Fisher, and seven brothers and sisters - George, William, Harry and Karl Fazler, Catherine Woolever, Anna Rothfuss and Elizabeth Thomas. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Montoursville. Burial will be in the Montoursville Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Pantalone’s, 409 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg.

Mary Ann Bick
Mary Ann Bick, 71, of Ponte Pedra Beach, Fla., a city native, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001 at Baptist Medical Center, Jacksonville, Fla. She and her husband, Arnold Bick, celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary last year. She and her husband owned a uniform business in Easton, Conn. She was born May 2, 1929. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Sari; a son, Jonathan; a sister, Jane Egan Brummer of South Thomaston, Maine; a brother, Vincent Egan of Altoona; and a grandchild. Memorial services are planned for spring. Interment will be private.

Roland L. Brown
SHUNK - Roland L. Brown, 62, of Fox Township, Sullivan County, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Troy Community Hospital. He was the husband of the former Neda Tillotson. He was an alumnus of Loyalsock High School. He worked all his life as a logger and sawmill worker, retiring from L&H Lumber Co. five years ago. Born Oct. 15, 1938 in Shunk, he was a son of Ellis and Agnes Brown. Surviving, besides his wife are his father; five daughters, Debbie, Rose Groves, Tammie Ott, Rolanda Worthington, Robin Brown; three brothers Harry, Glen and Jerrod; and a sister, Ethel Krise. He was preceded in death by his mother on July 9, 2000. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Morse & Kleese’s, 40 N. Center St., Canton, with the Rev. Herbert Eby officiating. Interment will be in Ellenton Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 1 p.m. Monday.

Erma M. Heller
Erma M. Heller, 91, of 1012 Bonair Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Sycamore Manor, where she had been a patient for two weeks. Her husband, Ernest H. Heller, died Dec. 27, 1985. She was retired from the former H. Warshow & Son in Milton. She was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church. Born Aug. 4, 1909 in this city, she was a daughter of Charles and Mable Musselton Guthrie. Surviving are a daughter, Frances P. Crossley of this city; a sister, Frances Wesley of Phoenixville; and a granddaughter, Cynthia Eagles. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville, with her pastor, the Rev. Roy D. Meyer, officiating. Burial will be in Twin Hills Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday. The family will provide the flowers.
