Clarence E. Wolfgang Sr., 74, of 407 Main St., Muncy, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Muncy Valley Hospital. Born Sept. 23, 1926, in Kulpmont, he was the son of the late Rufus & Carrie Burkey Wolfgang. Retiring in 1990, he was an injection molder for Selmax, Selinsgrove. Previously, he worked for Keystore Forging, Hotel Edison & Phillips Industries in Sunbury. He was a 1945 graduate of Sunbury High School and an Army veteran of WWII. He was a life member of Sunbury Steam Fire Co. 1 and Sunbury VFW 1532 where he was past commander. He was a Golden Eagle at Sunbury Eagles, past governor of Sunbury Moose 181, and member of American Legion Post 201. He was an avid bingo player, roller skater, Phillies & Eagles fan, Shikellamy wrestling & football fan, Muncy boys & girls basketball fan, and Muncy football fan.
Surviving are his wife, the former Lois F. Gross, married Aug. 7, 1947; his stepmother who raised him, Martha Wolfgang of Selinsgrove; children Clarence E. Jr., Doris I. & Richard O’Neill, Wayne A. & Jane, and Lisa A. & Charles Snyder, all of Muncy; 10 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter; a sister Evelyn Walter, Selinsgrove; a brother George of Northumberland; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gorden, in infancy. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Zweier’s, 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury, with the Rev. Jacob Martin of God’s Missionary Church, Sunbury officiating. Burial will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Sunbury. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6:30-9 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. John R. Polinsky, formerly of Dushore, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Mildred, Wednesday, with The Most Reverend John M. Dougherty, D.D. Auxiliary Bishop of Scranton, presiding. S. LeRoy Whitmoyer
S. LeRoy Whitmoyer, 88, of Hughesville, died Feb. 13, 2001 at Muncy Valley Hospital. Born Nov. 28, 1912, in Moreland Twp., he was a son of Ezra & Fannie Farnsworth Whitmoyer. He was a graduate of Picture Rocks High School, the Washington D.C. Radio & Television Technical Institute and Penn State University, where he earned a degree in agriculture. LeRoy was the Lycoming Co. champion mile runner in 1930 and 1931. He worked for Franklin Twp. as road supervisor for 18 years. Also, he served as auditor and secretary for the township. He farmed in both Jordan and Franklin Twps. for many years. He formerly worked for Young Industries and retired from the former Sprout-Waldron Co. in 1980. He was a member of AARP and the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church where he had formerly served on church council. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving are his wife of 30 years, the former Betty I. Reeder; a son, Robert E. of Wooster, OH; a stepdaughter, Shirley A. Vassello of Wmspt.; 2 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; 5 step great grandchildren; and a brother, Raymond of Unityville. He is predeceased by a sister, Myrtle. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at McCarty-Thomas, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with the Rev. George Doran officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery. Betty L. Purvis Edwards
Betty L. Purvis Edwards, 71, of Mansfield, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at home. Born March 5, 1929, in Covington, she was the daughter of Fay & Ruth Murray Purvis. She and her husband Lyle were the retired owners of the PondaRosa Motel & Restaurant. They previously owned the Halfway Sinclair Station, Blossburg, Candlelight Inn, Ralston, and the Cloverfarm Grocery, Arnot. She was a member of Arnot Presbyterian Church and the Chiefland, Florida Golf Club. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Lyle; a daughter & son-in-law, Cindy Kay & Daniel Davis of Arnot; 3 sons & daughters-in-law, James III & Connie of Moscow, L. David & Michelle of Mansfield, Fred K. & Susan of Morrisdale; 9 grandchildren, Timothy Davis, Kristine Hall, Chad, Stacy, Jamie, Fred L., Jennifer, Jace, & David L. Edwards; 2 great grandchildren, Marley & Jonathan Hall; a brother, Clifford “Butch” Purvis of Bath, N.Y.; 6 sisters, Ruth “Rip” Brown of Mitchelville, N.Y., Doris George of Key West, FL, Wendy Carleton of Wellsboro, Virginia Holcombe of Liberty, Hazel Wilston of Middlebury, Joan Heck of Tioga. She was preceded in death by sisters, Eleanor Tremaine, Nellie Osterhoudt, 4 infant sisters, and 1 infant brother. Mike Duran
Mike Duran, 76, 2242 Webb St., died Feb. 12 at home. He retired in 1987 as a brakeman/conductor for Conrail and the former Reading Railroad with 36 years of service. A Marine veteran of WWII, he was a life member of Leroy O. Buck Post 7863 VFW. He was also a member of Garrett Cochran Post 1 American Legion and a lifetime member of the U.T.U. Born August 26, 1924, in this city, he was a son of George and Theresa Duran. Surviving are two sons, Michael C., Mt. Laurel, N.J. & Gary S., city; two daughters, Brenda K. Shaffer, Muncy & Michele R. Esh, Intercourse; two sisters, Mary Ritter, Allentown & Elizabeth Norris, DuBoistown; and two grandchildren, Tamara R. Shaffer & Taylor D. Esh. He was predeceased by three brothers and six sisters. Funeral services will be private. Interment will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park. There will be no visitation. Peggy L. Taylor
Peggy L. Taylor, 74, of 800 Clair Road, Montoursville, died February 12, 2001, at home. Her husband, James W. Taylor, Sr. died May 10, 1975. She was a graduate of Clearfield High School. She retired in 1995 from Eckerd Drug Store where she worked as a clerk. Born February 18, 1926 in Clearfield, she was a daughter of Albert and Glendora Patterson Moore. Surviving are 3 sons, James W. Taylor, Jr. of Hughesville, Donald W. Taylor of Montoursville, Jerry R. Taylor of Montoursville, 1 daughter Betty L. Taylor-Phillips wife of Paul L. Philliips of Hughesville, 6 grandchildren, Brenda Dee Taylor, Sandy Ray Phillips, Adam N. Taylor, Clinton J. Taylor, Alex J. Taylor, Katy Taylor, 1 sister Mary Dangle of Cogan Station, 1 brother William Moore of Pittsburgh. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Fern L. Hipple
Fern Lucille Hipple, 85, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in Winchester Hospital. The daughter of Henry & Lottie Gower, she had lived in Virginia with her daughter, Margie Williamson, son-in-law, Neihl J. Williamson, Jr., and grandson Joey for the past 15 years. Grandchildren Ricky Hipple, Jr., and Jennifer Hipple Byard, both of Florida, also survive. Graveside service will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., Wildwood Cemetery.
Frederick L. Long
Frederick L. “Dutch” Long, 39, of Williamsport, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Williamsport Hospital following an extended illness. Born April 23, 1961, in Williamsport, he was the son and stepson of Alan and Patty Frantz and the son of Frederick Long, Sr. Surviving are his wife, Bertha M. Long of Wmspt.; a daughter, Laura Jean of Wmspt.; his stepfather and mother, Alan and Patty Frantz of Cogan Station; his father, Frederick Long Sr. of Wmspt.; a sister, Deborah Jones of Nesbitt; 2 brothers, Bill Rook of Wmspt. and Paul Long of Hernando, FL. A memorial service will be held Thursday, 7 p.m. at Calvary Church of the Nazarene, 3200 Lycoming Creek Road, Williamsport, with the Rev. Louis Gatti and the Rev. Phyma Day officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
William G. Bowen
William G. Bowen, 78, 934 Arch St., Williamsport, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at home following an extended illness. Born June 28, 1922, in Williamsport, he was a son of Paul & Catherine Wool Bowen. He owned and maintained rental properties. He was an Army veteran of WWII, a member of VFW Post 7863, DuBoistown, and the Young Mens Republican Club. Surviving are a brother, James H. of Telford, and nieces & nephews. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday from Trinity Episcopal Church, 844 W. Fourth St., with the Rev. Dr. Andrew M. France Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. There will be no visitation. The family will provide the flowers. Mary Theresa Cannon, 79, formerly of Hughesville & Piscataway, N.J., died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Muncy Valley Hospital S.N.U. Born July 20, 1921, in Tuscarora, she was a daughter of Hugh F. & Julia C. Bell Cannon. She had been employed by both Markay Handbags and T&S Plastics Manufacturing, Plainfield, N.J. She was a member of Church of the Resurrection. Surviving are 2 brothers, Joseph of Scotch Plains, N.J. and Edward of Muncy; 3 sisters, Helen Berger of Hillsborough, N.J., Anna Miranda of South Plainfield, N.J., and Theresa Fogel of Hughesville. She was predeceased by 2 brothers, Hugh Jr. & Francis, and a sister, Patricia Miranda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, 11 a.m. at Church of the Resurrection, 526 S. Kathryn B. Cron
Kathryn Budenbach Cron, 98, formerly of Scranton, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, in Sycamore Manor Health Center, Montoursville, where she was a resident. Her husband, Edward Leroy Cron, died in 1948. Born April 23, 1902, Scranton, she was the daughter of William F. and Katherine Emig Budenbach. She was a member of Hickory Street Presbyterian Church, Scranton and a graduate of Scranton Central High School. She retired from International Correspondence Schools. Her musical background gave her an opportunity to stage and sing various productions in the Scranton area. Surviving are a son Edward, East Stroudsburg; 2 daughters, Nancy Cipolla, Oreland; Carol Sullivan, Montoursville; 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by 5 sisters, Corrine & Esther Budenbach, Viola Schneider, Selma Thomas & Olive Kelly; a brother, William F. Budenbach. Funeral services will be Thursday, 11 a.m. at Miller Bean’s, 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton, by the Rev. Tom H. Collins. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Shelby K. Derr, 63, of 2266 Royal Ave., Williamsport died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 at her home. She was a graduate of Williamsport High School class of 1955, a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #145 and the Democratic Club. She retired from Textron Lycoming in 1996. Born June 10, 1937 in Montoursville, she was the daughter of Kenneth Bell and Merion Elizabeth Snyder Miller. Surviving is a daughter Gayle Ellis of New Freedom, PA, and two sons Mark of city, and Greg of South Williamsport. Two grandchildren and six step grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Sanders Mortuary 821 Diamond St. with Pastor Ronald D. Savits officiating. Visitation from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday. Frances E. H. L. Fortner
Frances E. Hakes Ludwig Fortner, loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, age 94, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, February 14, 2001. She was born in Montgomery on Saturday, June 9, 1906, the daughter of Alpheaus B. and Chrissie Viola Maley Hakes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harris M. Ludwig, on October 6, 1967, her second husband, Dean H. Fortner on June 9, 1980, her son, Donald E. Ludwig, on February 28, 1943, and her daughter, Jean K. Ludwig Moore, on June 8, 2000. She is survived by her daughters, June M. Ludwig Zimmerman of Cogan Station, Mary Lee F. Ludwig Hafer of Sayre, Dorothy L. Ludwig Kiess of Cogan Station, Carol A. Ludwig Taylor of McKees Rocks, three sisters, Eleanor Hill of Jersey Shore, Viola Younkin of Trout Run, Leona McCormick of Allenwood, 26 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren. Mrs. Ludwig-Fortner was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Williamsport. She was a Gold Star Mother, a former member of the Liberty Bell Council No. 51 of the Daughters of America, and a long-time employee of the former L.L. Stearns & Sons, Williamsport. The funeral will be Friday, 2 p.m. at Spitler’s, 733 Broad St., Montoursville. Burial in Twin Hills Memorial Park, Fairfield Twp. The Rev. M. Joyce Gensib her pastor will be officiating. Sylvia D. Green, 53, of 8321 Williams Ave., Philadelphia, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at the home of her son, Jerome, 505 Park Ave., Williamsport. She was a homemaker. Born Nov. 23, 1947, in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of Leroy and Mary Jane Jefferson Holloway. Memorial services will be held in Philadelphia. Arrangements handled by Maneval’s, 500 W. Fourth St.
Eugene T. Jasper
Eugene T. Jasper, 66, of 1383 Queneshukeny Road, Linden, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at his home. He and his wife, the former Eleanor Kitko, observed their 44th wedding anniversary June 30. He was a member of Church of the Ascension. He was a plumber for the former Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 810 and also worked for R & J Ertel, Williamsport and Silvertip Inc., Lewisburg. Born Dec. 11, 1934 in Madera, PA, he was a son of Wilbur and Merna Richardson Jasper. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Gene of city and Timothy of Cogan Station; four grandchildren, Ryan, Nathan, Nicole and Lyndsay Jasper; three brothers, Edward and William of Coalport and Webb of Altoona; two sisters, Rose Jasper and Shirley Clark, both of Houtzdale. A Memorial mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, 2111 Linn St., with the Rev. Charles J. Cummings officiating. No visitation. Sanders 821 Diamond St. The family will provide the flowers. Pastor Robert A. Kulzer, 76, of Rochester, N.Y., formerly of Williamsport, died suddenly Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001. Pastor Kulzer was founder of the former Faith Tabernacle, Williamsport, where he ministered for 23 years. Surviving are his wife, Geraldine; children Marcia Murawski of Va., Karen Coran of Pa., Robert Kuhia of Pa.; daughter-in-law Bonita Kulzer of N.Y.; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews & cousins.
