Marie M. Tyson
Marie M. Tyson, 81, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at ManorCare Nursing Center North.
Marie was born in the Spring City/Royersford, PA area on November 18, 1919, the sixth of seven children born to Luther Mattis and Mary Zeimer. She excelled as a student, graduating from high school second in her class. Reading and collecting poetry were her passions, and she won an award for writing in a national writing contest.
Marie married her childhood sweetheart, Perry H. Tyson, also of Spring City, and they celebrated forty-three years of marriage before Perry predeceased her in 1984. Together they had five children.
Marie devoted her life to becoming a homemaker extraordinaire. She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed her family above all else. She employed her many skills and talents in and around the home. A whiz with the sewing machine, a pair of knitting needles and a needle and thread, she clothed her children, upholstered the rooms of her home, and later provided beautiful handmade quilts and braided rugs for her children and grandchildren. Her interior decoration talents spilled over into three Williamsport area restaurants owned by her two sons, as she wowed customers with her window, wall and table decorations. Her baked goods could easily have graced the covers of any culinary magazine.
Marie could make a friend out of a stranger in any grocery checkout line. Both friends and strangers were recipients of her generosity as she took meals and hand-made gifts to those in need.
Perhaps Marie will be best remembered for her youthful spirit, which prompted her to say one time recently, "I have the heart of a nineteen-year-old trapped in an eighty-year-old body."
Marie is survived by her four children, Michael Tyson of Williamsport, Toby Hagmaier of Thorofare, NJ, Beth Masters of Essex Junction, VT, and Tim Tyson of Williamsport; eight grandchildren, Peter, Jenny, Janell, Paul, Rebecca, Lynn, Loren and Cody; one great grandchild, Drew; and a sister and brother, Ruth Steeb of Elizabethtown, PA and Robert Mattis of Elkins, WV.
A private memorial service will be held for the immediate family in Williamsport on Easter morning, April 15, 2001.
