Ellen B. (Metje) Cizek, 67, of Mansfield, died Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at home. She was born Feb. 5, 1934 in Jersey City, NJ, a daughter of the late Edward and Ellen Metje. On Feb. 10, 1962, Ellen married Paul H. Cizek, with whom she celebrated over 39 years of marriage. She was employed by the TREHAB office in Wellsboro for over 16 years.
In addition to her husband, Ellen is survived by her son, Randy P. Cizek of Mansfield; daughters, Laura E. Domenech of Duncannon, and Sally A. (Joe) Burget of New Bloomfield; grandson, Zachary Ryan Cizek; and sister, Gladys Jones of Manesquan, NJ.
Friends may call at the Scureman Funeral Home, Inc., 130 S. Main St., Mansfield, on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, from 7-9 p.m. A graveside service will be held at the Lewisburg Cemetery, Lewisburg on Friday Sept. 7, 2001, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John D. Yost, of the Faith Lutheran Church, officiating.

Leigh E. Herman, 89, of 1900A Ravine Road, died Monday, September 3, 2001, in the WIlliamsport Home following a brief illness.
His first wife, the former Ruth V. Waltz, died in 1979, his second wife, the former Linda B. Bair, died in 1990.
He was a civil engineer who was a self-employed surveyor. He had been employed by the Williamsport Area School District and taught school for twenty-four years.
He was a member of the Calvary U.M. Church since 1939 and was a choir member for 50 years and active in other church committees. He was past president of the Professional Engineers Society, a member of the John F. Laedlein Lodge 707 F.&A.M., the Williamsport Consistory and its choir and the Zafar Grotto and its string band. He was a 1937 graduate of Bucknell University.
He was born in Picture Rocks on March 20, 1912, a son of George W. and Nell E. Longbay Herman.
Surviving are two daughters, Nancy L. Nagle of Mechanicsburg and Jean M. Shilo of Sunbury; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol A. Cecco; two brothers, Oliver R. and C. LaRue.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, 2 p.m. at the Knight-Confer Funeral Home, 1914 Memorial Avenue, with Rev. Larry Halverstadt-Cole, his pastor, officiating. A Masonic Service will precede the funeral service. Interment will be in State Road Cemetery. Family will provide the flowers. There will be a visitation from 1-2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Joseph A. Holdren Sr.

Joseph A. Holdren, Sr., 61, of 235 Lycoming Mall Dr., Pennsdale, died Sunday, September 2, 2001, at his home. Born September 13, 1939, in Warrensville, he was the son of Jason and Elsie Mundrick Holdren.
He was a member of the NRA, the AARP and the Teamsters Union local 764. He served in the Army from 1959-1961 and in the reserves until 1971. He loved the outdoors and had worked at the Schnadig Corp. for 23 years and at Strick Corp. for 6 years.
He and his wife, the former Connie M. Dincher, celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary on May 12, 2001.
Surviving in addition to his wife are 2 sons, Joseph A. Jr. and his wife Janita of Dallas, PA, Michael J. Sr. and his wife Candace of Hughesville; a daughter, Brenda L. Holdren of New York City; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer, Michael Jr. and Jessica; 2 step-grandchildren, Charity and Bethany Blaser; 3 brothers, Jerry and Cliff of Trout Run and Lawrence of Williamsport; 4 sisters, Sandy Thompson, Ann Evans and Mary Phillips all of Trout Run and Betty Helm of Kansas; and his best friend, Allen Carr of Pittsburgh.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, Carol Fleming and 2 brothers, LeRoy and Bill Holdren.
The funeral will be Thursday, 10:30 a.m. at Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St., Montoursville with his brother, Cliff Holdren officiating. Burial will be in Twin Hills Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m.

Barry W. Hostrander, 50, of Miami, Fla., went to be with the Lord August 28, 2001. He was born Sept. 11, 1950 the son of LaVern and Mildred J. Hostrander of South Williamsport. He worked in construction in Florida. He was a member of the First Church of Perrine in Miami. He is survived by his wife, Deborah, two sons, one stepdaughter, four grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, one brother Craig of Milton, two sisters, Patricia Bowman of this city and Gayle Ranck of Chesapeake, Va. The service was held Friday Aug. 31 in the church.

Doris J. “Dori” McMahon, 63, of 3505 Southwood Drive, Palmer Twp., died Sunday, September 2, 2001, in Easton Hospital. Born Dec. 10, 1937, in Harrisburg, she was a daughter of Luther & Ida Booker Krebs. She and her husband, Joseph F. McMahon, Jr., M.D., were married 40 years this past June.
She graduated from Williamsport High School, attended Penn State and graduated from the Katherine Gibbs Finishing School, Montclair, NJ. Dori was a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic Church.
She was a member of the Easton Hospital Junior Auxiliary; was the first President of the Apple Corps of the Weller Center for Health Education, Easton and served again as president more recently; was on the Weller Center for Health Education Board of Directors; Past President of the former Northampton County Homemakers Board; and was fundraising chair for capital campaigns for the Easton Children’s Home.
Surviving are 2 sons, Michael of Westfield, NJ & Daniel of Palmer Twp.; a daughter, Lisa Merrigan of Caracas, Venezuela; a sister, Betty Slaugenhoupt of Willow Grove; 4 grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, 1918 Washington Blvd., Easton. Burial will be private. Friends may call from 7-8:30 tonight in the Ashton Funeral Home, 14th & Northampton Sts., Easton. Edgar E. Smith, 74, of 421 N. Montour St., Montoursville, died Saturday, September 1, 2001, at Williamsport Hospital.
Born in Williamsport December 6, 1926, a son of Howard E. and Edith Mae Frymire Smith, he married the former Emma J. Schramm January 8, 1949. She died in March 2001.
He was an employee of the Montoursville Boro for over 25 years, retiring in 1989. He was a WWII Navy veteran and was a member of the Crystal Springs Rod & Gun Club and also Wallis Run Hunting Club. He enjoyed the outdoors.
His survivors include 3 sons, David L. of Cogan Station, Ronald E. of Hillsgrove and Gary W. of Montoursville; 3 sisters, Helen J. Tucker and Shirley J. Hampton, both of Williamsport and Ruth Klattie of N.J.; 12 grandchildren and 8 grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Kathleen Haney.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. from the Maneval Funeral Home, “A Life Celebration Home,” 500 W. 4th St., Williamsport, with the Rev. Dan A. Leet, pastor of East End Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Montoursville Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Mr. George W. Teufel

Mr. George W. Teufel, 73, of 108 Ruth Lane, Jersey Shore, died Saturday morning September 1, 2001, in the Leigh Memorial Hospital in Norfolk, VA. Born March 24, 1928 in Mount Carmel, PA, he was the son of Samuel J. Teufel and Henrietta (Buehler) Teufel. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary E. Edwards; they were united in marriage November 21, 1951, in the former Evangelical United Brethren Church in Jersey Shore by the Reverend B.G. Hoffman.
He was a 1945 graduate of Mount Carmel Senior High School and a 1949 graduate of Lock Haven State Teachers College. He received a Masters Degree in Education Administration in 1954 from the Pennsylvania State University.
An outstanding athlete in high school through the professional ranks, he excelled on the football field and as a member of the track & field squad. A four-year starter at running back in college, and team captain his senior season, he was selected to the 1948 Small College All-America Team and drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 1949. He played professionally for the Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers and Richmond Rebels.
He was a high school district champion in the 100 yard and the 220 yard dashes and was a member of the 1945 Pennsylvania State Championship mile relay team. Captain of his college track squad, he was a record-setting sprinter, capturing the Pennsylvania State Teachers College championships in the 100 and 200 yard dashes and the mile relay. He was enshrined in the West Branch Sports Hall of Fame in 1980 and was a member of the Ed Romance Sports Hall of Fame in Mount Carmel, PA.
An educator for 40 years, Mr. Teufel taught Health and Physical Education at the Jersey Shore Senior High School from 1950 through 1963 and served as Assistant Principal and Principal of that school from 1963-1966. He was the Director of Secondary Education for the Williamsport Area School District from 1966 through 1974, and a Social Studies teacher at the Jersey Shore Junior High School from 1974 until his retirement in 1990.
While teaching in Jersey Shore, he founded the Track & Field program, served as Varsity and Junior High basketball coach, assisted in coaching the Varsity and Junior Varsity football teams, and was a Student Council and Hi-Y advisor. He spent two years as the Jersey Shore Athletic Director, chaired the North Central District of Pennsylvania Health, Physical Education and Recreation, was Vice President and President of the Susquehanna Valley Football Officials Chapter, and served as a member of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness during the Kennedy Administration.
His numerous contributions to the community spanned the past five decades highlighted by his 12 years of service as Mayor of Jersey Shore from 1978-1990. He was a charter member of the Jersey Shore Lions Club where he completed duties as Vice President, President, and Director. He was a member of the La Belle Vallee Lodge, No, 232, F.&A.M., the Williamsport Consistory, a 17-year member of Jersey Shore’s Independent Hose Company No. 1, a 4-year member of Jersey Shore’s Zoning Hearing Board, and a 3-year member of the inactive Marine Corps Reserve.
He was a Life member of the Lock Haven University and Pennsylvania State University Alumni Associations, receiving Lock Haven’s Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1989. He served as General Superintendent of the former Evangelical United Brethren Sunday School, President of the EUB Men’s Organization and Youth Chairman of the Lycoming Sabbath School Association. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife Mary, Mr. Teufel leaves two sons, George R. Teufel and Robert S. Teufel and his wife Lynn, and 5 grandchildren, all of Virginia Beach, VA. He is also survived by a brother, Alfred K. Teufel, of Essington, PA, and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Stokes of Essington, PA, Mrs. Jean Wassmouth of Whitman, MA, and Mrs. Mildred Mulcahy of Mount Carmel, PA.
Calling hours will be from 2-4 p.m., and a viewing will be held from 7-9 p.m., Thursday, September 6, 2001, at the Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 North Main Street, Jersey Shore. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, September 7, 2001, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Allegheny and Glover Streets in Jersey Shore. Rev. John C. Libert, his pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Jersey Shore Cemetery.
Betty Browne

Betty Browne, 89, of 1445 Sycamore Road, died Wednesday, September 5, 2001 at the Williamsport Hospital. Her husband, George Browne, predeceased her.
Born December 3, 1911 in New York City, she was a daughter of Robert and Mildred Rosenquest Spafford.
Betty attended church services at Sycamore Manor and served on its residence council. She was an avid professional wrestling fan.
Surviving are 1 son, Jon M. Downs of Williamsport; 2 daughters, Sharon Colt of Williamsport, Heather Marion of Lexington, VA. There are 7 grandchildren, Lindsey Brooks, Erin Conley, Jeff Downs, Rachelle Sheets, Bethany Colt, John C. Colt, and Todd Colt. There are also 4 great grandchildren. A son, Robert O. Downs, predeceased her.
Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. There will be no visitation.
